I had the pleasure of attending the Arthur Ashe Legacy lecture by Patricia Turner, PhD, Senior Dean of the UCLA College (old heads like me know it as the College of Letters and Science) earlier this evening. This event was hosted by the Chancellor’s Society, and I was invited by @johnobruin. I had no idea Mr. Ashe was valedictorian of his high school class, nor did I know he served in the ROTC while on campus (apparently tennis players during this time did not receive full scholarships). I also found out Ralph Bunche (Google him) and Jackie Robinson were highly influential in his decision to attend UCLA. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend a truly inspirational evening with @missvalkondos, the newly retired @uclagymnastics coach with a special guest: Bruin basketball Ann Meyers Drysdale. Coach Val and I have a couple of things in common: we were both History majors (although I doubled with African-American Studies) and we both lost out mothers to cancer. Coach Val also had her own cancer battle, but she is not just surviving but thriving! And after listening to her dreams, hopes, and plans after graduation, I can confirm Coach Val is just getting started. As someone who has played competitive basketball in the past, it was truly a pleasure to meet a pioneer in women’s basketball in Ann Meyers Drysdale. She definitely was, and continues to be, a pioneer. [Long post, tl;dr version: happy 100th birthday to @ucla and happy 20 years of being @uclaalumni to me!) 25 years ago, I had the honor of receiving several "big envelopes" from various colleges and universities, but I was most excited to receive one in particular: @ucla. I did what my AVID teacher, Mrs. Soriano, my counselor Mrs. Behnke, and several other trusted adults/mentors advised me to do, and applied to several other schools. But I knew that if I received that acceptance from UCLA, it would be a wrap! And 20 years ago, next month I made that transition from student to alumni. On Saturday, I attended Alumni Day on campus, which also included the the kickoff to UCLA’s centennial. I also used this occasion as my own 20-year anniversary celebration. Personally and professionally I’m not where I thought I would be 20 years after college. I know this is Instagram, where no one reads long captions, but if you know me, you know I love basketball. And most of my good Facebook memories (and real life memories) from March and early April are centered around March Madness, aka the men’s and women’s NCAA Division I basketball championship. The cancellation of this year’s March Madness, combined with the indefinite suspension of the NBA season due to the COVID-19 pandemic leaves a certain void. (Before anyone @s me, I am aware both decisions were the right thing to do. I am allowed to express my own feelings on my own page.) Being a @ucla alumna, there are two significant anniversaries involving the Bruin men’s team I want to recognize. One, it is the 45th anniversary of the last championship won by a John Wooden-coached team. (Coach Wooden announced that he was retiring after the championship game following the Bruin’s semifinal victory over Kentucky.) Also, this is the 20th anniversary of UCLA’s 11th championship team. This championship may be the most significant to me as it was within my lifetime, and it happened during my freshman year. We had our own “fabolous” freshman class of Toby Bailey, Milton (JR) Henderson, omm’A Givens, and Kris Johnson (whose dad, Marques, was a member of that 1975 championship squad). This of course was balanced by the leadership of upperclassmen like the O’Bannon brothers, Tyus Edney and Cameron Dollar. After the Bruins won the championship game, I moseyed down to Westwood Village with a few friends. It was a random and rapidly assorted group, I vaguely remember a couple of folks who may have joined in. The scene was about as you would expect, although do I remember being more impressed about the presence of lowriders than anything else.
