TDP S7E2 Rewatch (feat. my commentary)
Callum being supportive of both Ezran and Rayla is tough! He loves them all so much
“We’ll get through this too…right?” he phrases it like a question, either because he isn’t sure of himself, or because he is and is just prompting Rayla to agree with the sentiment
I can’t help but notice that while Corvus doesn’t necessarily agree with Soren’s wacky ideas, he doesn’t shoot them down like Viren or Claudia would have
“The prisoner” “the elf” “a ranting madman” “the king” Opeli has a habit of reducing people to their defining role in her eyes
God Ezran, Rayla and Callum are so messy in this season I love and hate it at the same time
I could SEE Aaravos thinking “ohhh Viren totally murdered Kpp’Ar didn’t he”
Terry laying it on thick with the flirting, I see you buddy
Soren looked so disturbed by the hard-as-rock bread
Ezran looked to Callum to validate his anger, and I think it’s because in their last council meeting Callum was very “chop chop kill destroy” – if anyone could understand wanting to tackle a problem with force/violence, it’s Callum!
“Before THEY think about attacking us” again with the depersonalisation
Wild that our villains get the funhouse plot
The character acting between Rayla and Callum is great this scene! Little hand movements, expression changes, and strong VO work really elevate moments like these
“Jerk face” mention but not one jerk face dance this entire season. Lowkey disappointed
Runaan guard #1 was definitely Jack, right? Right??
Loved the consistency with Runaan being weak from the resurrection across these episodes
“I’m sworn to King Ezran” rewatching this exchange reminded me of Strangers and how vital Ezran is to Soren’s sense of self
I genuinely think that if Rayla had not freed Runaan, Ezran would’ve let him go this episode. Callum’s words looked like they reached Ezran, but when he realised that he’d been betrayed all the anger came rushing back
Runaan instructing Rayla mid-battle was great
Aaravos being confused about Kpp’Ar and his puzzles when he’s been playing 4D chess with every other character will never not be funny. You’re a million times more dramatic and indirect what do you mean “but why”????
Corvus coming to Soren’s rescue <3
Ezran’s genuine horror at his brother using magic against him ughh
Crazy that a kids show casually introduced magical cannibalism. Also, rewatching this, the diagram looks like there’s different effects depending on what parts are consumed? I wonder what the forearm does (since that’s what Kpp’Ar had bandaged up)
Terry subtly trying to push Claudia away from dark magic again
The scene outside the Banther Lodge makes me feel like I just watched a really messy family divorce in the worst way possible
Minor weird note, but I wonder if you can telepathically sigh? Like, can you exhale in your thoughts?
Overall thoughts:
It’s a good episode in theory and in practice! The animation was consistent and all the characters behaved exactly as I expected them to. Even the most out-of-character moments were still in-character (idk if I’m wording that well). The only reason I didn’t like rewatching this episode was the broyals angst. Look, I am a messy bitch and I love angst and conflict, but Callum and Ezran’s relationship always felt sacred to me. I hate seeing them fight like this, even if it’s necessary and makes the end of S7 more impactful.
