look... i'm not a youtuber. i had a very brief tiktok phase where i was mainly lip-synching to things in my backyard. so i'm aware this is an experience i don't have, etc... but i really think that if you're going to make a speech, a video, or anything even similar, you need to make sure you're pronouncing names correctly. especially if you're a white guy (like me) talking about people of color! is this really so hard? it happens so often that i'll see a youtuber add a little "i realized later that i was pronouncing this person's name incorrectly." then why didn't you fucking check first??
i just... think we should know better than this. i’ve seen people edit in a robot voice saying the word over every time they said it wrong, and i much prefer hearing that to this little "oh sorry i said this wrong :(" that's a person's actual name! do a fucking google search!!
#it's just so frustrating because i can admit i don't have much knowledge about the rest of the world#i would probably pronounce these things wrong on the first try too!#but i try to make sure that i do my best to learn how to say proper names if i know im going to need to say them#and when a video is my first real introduction to a subject and they didn't fucking google their pronunciation i can learn the wrong one#brought to you by me watching a video about magellan and lapu-lapu#my education was lacking and also over 12 years ago now#so i'm not really embarrassed to say i'm uneducated on a lot of foreign history but it does suck#i don't know if i’ve ever heard a story like that where the natives weren't slaughtered#which makes me thing there had to be victories in the us that i’ve never heard about#or maybe i’ve just heard of them only from the other side#maybe i should take a history class
