There was a time when the BMW brand stood for gorgeous, desirable cars that were a delight to drive. These days, BMWs sell because of the name and reputation, but what is on offer is little more than gaudy designs, generic drive experience, and basically a black hole of maintenance expense. Car enthusiasts have noted with concern the alarming downward spiral in BMW’s quality. What on earth happened? Well, it can be summarised in two words: cost cutting. Not only has rear-wheel drive feature been abandoned in several entry level BMW models, the quality of parts has completely been sacrificed. The X1 pictured above came to us with broken engine and transmission mounts and premature suspension wear, despite having been driven only 40k km. And if you think this is a one-off case, think again because we get BMWs with similar issues all the time. Entry level BMWs today probably have the least durable parts in the luxury car segment, especially when it comes to suspension. What a tragic decline in a once resplendent brand.
