Photo by @deb.jaffe One of the advantages we, immigrants, have when relocating to another country, at least at the start, is a lack of awareness of codes. By this I mean that we are not conscious of local prejudices and hang-ups. The urban geography we slowly become acquainted with is just that: new territories to discover and new names to learn. That’s how I found out about #Brixton and its (unjustly deserved, in my opinion) bad reputation. In my early days at the travel agency where I worked for more than half a decade, I once mentioned to a colleague where I was planning to go later on that evening. He looked at me as if I’d just sworn at a client on the phone. Brixton? Are you mad? Do you want to get knifed? Of course, I went to Brixton that night. As days turned into years and years turned into a couple of decades, I came to fall in love with #SW9. I may live north of the river and hang out mainly in east London, but there’s something about Brixton that lures me back. It’s the crazy, organic and hard-to-define cultural and intellectual mix the place has to offer. I saw a post-#Baduizm but pre-New Amerykah Part One #ErykahBadu at #BrixtonAcademy (before it became O2 Brixton Academy) in the early noughties. I’ve raved to anyone who will listen about Fish, Wings and Tings, one of the top street food joints, not just in London, but probably in the country (pre-pandemic I’d already been to the place about half a dozen times. I can’t wait to go back). I danced my head off to the beat of master percussionist Kevin Haynes’ batá drums outside Habesha, an Ethiopian restaurant in Brixton Village on a sultry summer evening a few years ago. So, piece of advice for any fellow immigrant newly arrived in London. Go wherever the hell you want to go. Codes are meant to be broken and postcodes to be travelled through. You could even start in SW9. 20 years ago Atari Teenage Riot was crashing like a tank hit by a rocket. Burnt out, sick, tired but furious, the end of the world seemed near: 1999, then switch... 2000 the final show was recorded... When Nic Endo, Alec Empire and Carl Crack took the stage at Brixton Academy in London, UK, they knew that this was the end of the 90s, Digital Hardcore and ATR.... but they decided that the only option they had left was to a t t a c k.... There was no doubt that it was, and still is the loudest noise show ever played to the biggest audience, and the discussion that followed it was more about dB levels. Some argued it was 130dB, others claimed it was more like 120dB. “Definitely louder than Motorhead” “Louder than My Bloody Valentine” We say... who cares? Noise music is about using a very wide frequency range and make that a physical experience for the listener. It is ‘information overload’ to those who can’t take that much energy, but those who look for this intensity? Investigation carried out by the police, has revealed that security guards at Brixton Academy, the south London venue for Asake's concert where two people died in a stampede, allegedly took bribes to let people without tickets into concerts. A security guard who worked on the night of the incident, told the police that the act has been ongoing since 2009 and some of his colleagues made £1,000 cash from bribes they took from people coming for concerts without tickets. He also accused the security firm in charge of the venue of knowing about the illegal deals. "There were people taking money... Some staff made £1,000 cash," a guard, who is employed by AP Security, told the BBC. "Our company knew what was going on and they knew the people who were doing it, and they did nothing about it." The whistleblower guard, using the fake name Rohan, added that there were only 110 security guards on duty on the night of the fatal crush, when there should have been 190. He described the crush which took place at Asake's concert "like being in a car crash that's been really awful - being crashed on and stamped on". Rohan said that things get "out of hand" when a few people bribe their way in, because word of the breach spreads and other people try their luck. The whistleblower added; "When you let a few people in, they would text their friends, and they'll text their friends. "And the bouncers started being greedy, and it got out of hand. And people wanted to come in anyway, without a ticket. "You can train someone to the max, but when that happens in front of you, you actually stop… you freeze." Rohan claimed that the subject of bribes had been brought up in staff meetings, but AP Security managers had not reprimanded guards accused of letting ticketless people in. He also disclosed that bribing guards for tickets was not limited to Brixton Academy, but also happened at several other venues. Atari Teenage Riot polaroid 1999 We boarded our flight to Ireland to start our European tour - everything felt okay, even optimistic. Y2k was ca. 2 months away, and everybody believed civilization was about to end because the computer virusses would crash everything... (If you believe American socialists now, that the world will end in 12 years due to climate change, imagine how we felt in 1999 lol) Seat belt fastened, I closed my eyes... suddenly there was screaming and stewardesses were trying to fixate Carl Crack... he was standing near the emergency exit door, pushing down the doorhandle, while at the same time defending himself with Karate like moves... The plane was already rolling... and the pilot had to abort the take off... the co-pilot stormed out to help his colleagues ... A few minutes later the police entered the plane and escorted Carl out in hand cuffs... the passengers were all shocked, their mouths wide open, I made eye contact with Nic Endo and Hanin Elias... we all knew... we would have to play the first shows without him... I asked the stewardess if I could get a coffee and tried to work out in my head how we would change the set, the songs... and mostly...how to figure out help for Carl from Dublin, who I might call and so on... During these coming weeks the three of us were a strong unit, on stage and off stage... the chaos, the stress, the pressure, we felt almost invincible... Our record was doing well, NIN had just asked us to support them on their upcoming American tour... But in reality we were heading for ‘Brixton Academy 1999’ - we would crash and burn so hard, I still can feel the pain... When I look at the snapshot, I always remember that for a short moment we were ok and that it was good...
