Charles Hawtrey was born 105 years ago today (30 Nov 1914). I was in Deal (Kent) recently, where he spent his final years. Best known for the 'Carry On' films he began as a boy soprano, and made several records before moving on to radio, the theatre (as both actor and director), and cinema - regularly supporting Will Hay in the 1930s and 1940s (e.g.The Ghost of St. Michael's), appearing in numerous British classics (e g. Passport to Pimlico & A Canterbury Tale which I'm holding below the Blue Plaque), and in 23 Carry On films from 1958 to 72. He 'eccentricity' was obvious both on and off screen and he was well known around Deal. He died in 1988 in a nursing home in Walmer, near Deal, and it was claimed that on his deathbed he threw a vase at his nurse who asked for an autograph. . . . . . . #CharlesHawtrey #bornthisday #DealKent #CarryOnfilms #radio, #theatre #actor #director #cinema #WillHay #theGhostofStMichaels #Britishclassicfilms #Passporttopimlico #ACanterburyTale #Walmer #blueplaque #britishcinema #britishfilm #moviebuff #deathbed #kent #carryoncamping (at Deal, Kent) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5fGFIjlJ9K/?igshid=kmj3td99s19a
