Lay All Your Blood On Me

The choir’s angelic madrigals floated above them, lifting to the heavens as Brin kneeled before the prior. For his part, Prior Maxence had the grace to look uncomfortable about the proceedings. His face was contorted with the swallowed emotions of one failing to reconcile his beliefs with the orders of his goddess. If there was one thought that Brin hoped afflicted the prior, it was: What if my daughter were the one before me? 

Brin knew the prior’s daughter; she had grown up with Aeliane. They hadn't been close, but it was hard to negate a tie to someone you had been neighbours with your entire life. They had been playmates for as long as Brin could remember. Being so much more outgoing than Aeliane, it would've been hard for Brin not to adopt her into her circle of friends. Aeliane might not have been the friend type, but Brin had known her at least as well as she knew her cousins. Now that Aeliane was in boarding school… Well. 

As she looked up at the tall stained-glass windows above the altar, the red light of the setting sun streaming through them and painting the cathedral like blood, Brin supposed that death wouldn’t be so useless if it forced Prior Maxence to question the faith which he held onto so dearly. 

And what a morose thought that was, to consider bowing her head to the necessitated evil of her own death. If the death was the price for something which had not been her fault, Brin thought that perhaps the creature that had marred her humanity had been justified in its bottomless rage and hunger. Her tongue passed over the unfamiliar points of her new fangs, the hungry, inhuman part of her nagging her mind with a baser instinct which coiled like a half-starved snake beneath her ribs, waiting to strike. She wondered how freeing it would be to get a taste of their blood before she was forced into the next world. (If there was an afterlife for the likes of her. If her Awakening hadn’t robbed her of that, too.) 

Would her violent hunger vindicate their goddess’s orders? To rip them from this world rather than leave them to kiss the feet of a cruel deity would be an act of kindness. Though Brin supposed feeding on the clergy would only cement her inhumanity in their eyes with a vehemence. Perhaps killing them all would be too generous. 

Maxence would live, Brin decided. It was unnegotiable. The skies above and the ground below knew his children needed all the support they could get after the bloody tragedy four summers before. It would be fitting that blood followed this family. Besides, Brin couldn’t do that to Aeliane, even if they had never really been good friends.

Brin was running and trying not to look back, but she did and begged the question: Does it make you a bad person to bad things to bad people to save yourself from being hurt? That new, inhuman hunger whispered, yes, with an intensity that frightened Brin. 

Before she knew it, she was in someone's backyard, tripping into a patch of cabbage. She cursed and hissed as she struggled to get up, her dress entangled in the chickenwire fence around the garden. 

Light flooded the yard from the house behind her, silhouetting her against the dark garden. Brin felt a heart squeeze with fear, and she was almost giddy with it until she turned and saw that it was Aeliane in the bright doorway. If she could, she would've gone pale to see her there. 

"Brin? What the fuck?" Brin didn't think the accusatory tone she heard was imagined. 

Shit. 

Brin could feel Aeliane's heart squeeze again as she scrutinized Brin from the doorway. "Is that— a sacrïé-chaussette?" The small fear in Aeliane's voice betrayed her angry front.

Johan August Brinell (10 October 1849 – 17 November 1925)

A Swedish metallurgical engineer, Johan August Brinell is most well known for the hardness testing method that bears his name. He first proposed the test in 1900 and it became the first standardized method for testing materials hardness. Brinell hardness testing uses a round ball with a set load to make indents, with hardness calculated based on the size of the indent made. Given that this method uses are larger ball than many hardness testing methods that follow, it is still used today for macro-scale hardness measurements and for measurements on rougher surfaces.

Unlike most carapaceons, it carries no makeshift shell on its abdomen, instead distinguishing itself with a more streamlined form. Brinataur has highly specialised limbs; one chela is slender and sharp for cutting, whilst the other is enormous and used for launching an explosive residue. The tiny second limbs are used for handling, whilst the third and fourth limbs are for walking. Its fifth limbs are used as paddles when Brinataur takes to water, working alongside the flexible abdomen's uropods for efficient swimming. Juvenile Brinataur are called Brinelings, whose sandy colours contrasts the adult's blue and red hues. These began life as tiny swimming forms in shallow waters, feeding on phytoplankton and detritus. On reaching their juvenile stage, they take to land, forming small creches in a Brinataur's territory; their chela are not fully developed until adulthood, so they rely on camouflage for defence. Altruistically, the Brinataur protects any Brinelings in its turf, regardless of whether they are its biological offspring or not. When the Brinelings are one moulting period away from adulthood, they will disperse and find turf of their own. Brinataur is herbivorous, grazing on seaweed and occasionally straying inland to sample fruits and flora. They stake out territory along the shores, marking their turf via dislodging tiny spines from their rostrum. Territorial disputes are settled by comparing their enlarged pincers; individuals with smaller chela retreat, while evenly matched individuals 'arm-wrestle' until one concedes. Between their acute senses and potent defences, Brinataur fear little. They are not known for aggression towards humans, though field workers must keep their distance in case the carapaceon is aggravated by close proximity. Brinelings are wary of humans, and approaching them is not advised lest they panic and provoke the Brinataur to attack. Against other monsters, Brinataur uses defensive tactics, preferring to goad the enemy into attacks then countering. The true key to its success is the enlarged chela. Internal cavities store combustible residues that are discharged and activated by snaps of the pincer. This creates an explosive blast with impressive distance, blowing away most rivals. It takes Brinataur time to replenish its residue supply, however, so it prefers to use this explosive snap as a last resort. Brinataur is a competent opponent for experienced hunters (Low Rank - 4, High/Master Rank - 3). Fighting the carapaceon is an exercise in caution, learning to outmanoevure its defensive tactics and be wary of the explosive blasts. Brinataurs are effective at combat both in land and underwater. While they cannot use their blasts underwater, due to the residue diluting before it can ignite, they are more mobile and adopt a faster attack pattern. While Brinataur fears little, it must be wary of apex predators like Lagiacrus, though those monsters tend not to bother when there are easier targets to consider, as Brinataur can put up a respectable fight. It is the Brinelings who are more cautious, as they are easy prey for the likes of Hyborlex. One notable enemy is the bird wyvern Petra Fowl, which gladly picks off Brinelings. So often do they prey on the juveniles that adult Brinataur will attack Petra Fowl on sight, even willing to use their explosive blasts at the first opportunity. - Thank you for reading and take care.
