Navagrahas: the planets of Vedic astrology
Navagrahas fall under the the Hindu Astronomy and play a major part in the Hindu astronomical sphere. The Hindu astronomy whose origin dates back to the time of Vedas is concerned with the placement of nine planets and their influence on the world and on an individual. According to the Hindu astrology, the position of the planets when a person is born determines his potential in life.
The nine planets collectively are called Navagrahas. These 9 planets are worshipped by Hindus to overcome any hindrance, obstacle or bad luck. They are found mostly in all the temples and faithful believers pray to the Navagrahas before they pray to any other deity.
Out of those nine planets, seven are named after the planets in the Solar System and the other two are actually demons who managed their way into this group by trickery – Rahu and Ketu. Depending upon their location in the planetary system, they are deemed either auspicious or inauspicious. While Navagrahas are found in every temple, there are some temples that are solely dedicated to them. One such temple is the Navagraha temple located in the outskirts of Ujjain.
Effects of Navagrahas – Vedic Astrology
In Hindu Astrology, Navagrahas affects a person’s happiness, success and all-round prosperity. The good and bad, positive and negative influences of each of these nine planets are results of factors like the specific location of the planets on the birth chart, etc. Planets possessing Sattva nature are Jupiter, Sun and Moon. Planets bearing rajas are Venus and Mercury while planets with Tamas nature are Mars, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu.
These nine planets in vedic astrology are treated as deities with specific powers, nature and characteristic qualities depending on what each of these offers – positive or negative to people.
1.Sun (Surya): In the group of other planets, he is normally shown facing towards east, standing in the center. Around him are the rest of the planets facing in all different direction but not towards each other. He rides are chariot with one wheel which is pulled by seven horses symbolizing the seven colors of white light and seven days of the week. He is also known as Ravi.
2.Moon (Chandra): In the images, he is never portrayed as a complete person. Only his upper body with two hands holding a lotus each, riding a chariot pulled by 10 horses is shown. He is also known as Soma.
3.Mars (Mangala): Mangala is a Ferocious God holding with two holding weapons and 2 in mudras. His transport is a ram.
4.Mercury (Budha): Budha has four hands and rides on a chariot or Lion. Out of which, three of his hands holds a sword, a shield and a mace and the fourth hand is in a mudra.
5.Jupiter (Brihaspathi): He is the teacher of Gods and is praised in Rig Veda. He is shown sitting on a chariot pulled by 8 horses each showing one branch of knowledge.
6.Venus (Sukra): Sukra is the teacher of the Demons. He has four hands and rides on a chariot pulled by 8 horses. Three of his hands hold a staff, a rosary, a vessel of gold while the fourth hand is held in a mudra.
7.Sani (Saturn): Sani is a god who makes or breaks fortunes by his planetary position for which individuals fear him. He is shown with four hands riding on a chariot or a buffalo or even a vulture. He has three hands in which he holds an arrow, a bow and a javelin while his other hand is held in a mudra.
8.Rahu: He somewhat looks like Budha (Mercury) but both Gods differ in fundamental nature. Just like how Budha rides a white lion, he is shown riding a black lion. But just like Budha, he carries all the same weapons.
9.Ketu: In Sanskrit, Ketu means comet. It is said that he has a tail of a serpent in his body and his nature very much matched to that of a comet. In pictures, he shown riding a vulture and holding a mace.

JUPITER AND RAHU CONJUNCTION ALSO KNOWN AS GURUCHANDAL YOG
Jupiter and Rahu conjunction also known as Guru Chandal yoga or dosha is another popular dosha seen in many of the charts. It is a very simple dosha and need to be understood. Guru means Jupiter and Chandal means an outcast person, who is seen mainly in the graveyards. In astrology, the chandal status is given to Rahu, the demon of the zodiac. So when Jupiter is in conjunction with Rahu, then Guru Chandal dosha is formed.
Jupiter being teacher of the Devas is Guru Brihaspathi. Jupiter is considered as the most beneficial planet among the 9 planets and is known as the ultimate form of spirituality and Godliness. Since it means purity, it doesn’t like to get associated with Rahu, who is a demon. Rahu is called as a Chandal here, chandal resides among corpses. So these are two opposite forces.
Jupiter is the lord of Pisces and Sagittarius. In the natural zodiac wheel, it owns the 9th house and the 12th house. Both the houses are dealing with spirituality, moksha, and relationship with God.
When Jupiter and Rahu are together, then the person may find it difficult to abide by the divine laws of obedience, reverence, and submission. He will naturally be a rebel and his rebellious nature will make him get setbacks.
His rebellious nature will be his identity wherever he goes. He may like to question others, and it will be difficult for him to mingle with others easily. He may feel difficulty in respecting others. In simple words, his expression are of different types compared to regular and major expressions of humans.
Rahu is known as the demon in astrology and it means rebellion and aggression. When one see Jupiter and Rahu together in one’s chart, then they need to check the degrees and how much close they are? It’s generally assumed that, more closer, will be more rebellion in nature.
Guru Chandal dosha was considered as very inauspicious in the earlier days, but we should count all doshas in the present day context. This is the time for the rebels. When we look at the world, in general, we can see traditionalists are lagging behind and the world truly belongs to the rebels. Rebels are getting acknowledged. Rebels are noticed for their ideas and findings. The world is asking for change.
This dosha will have a different impact, according to the house which it occurs. You have to check in which house your Guru Chandal Yoga exists. Then you see whether you are challenging the traditional practices regarding that house? For example, the 7th house is the house of marriage.
When Guru Chandal yoga occurs in the 7th house, then the person may like to break the traditional kind of marriage. He may even go for living relationship or marriage against the family traditions. At the same time, the other features of the 7th house like business and professional relationships will not be a heavy task. The 7th house is the house of open enemies, so this person will take a new strange way to conquer his enemies, which will be a heavy blow to them.
So, to conclude Guru Chandal yoga means that you have that natural rebel in you. This rebellious may have the power to cause disruptions in your relationships. Especially with the Guru figures in your life.

The LORD who reveals Himself every 40 years ~ ‘ATHI VARADAR OF KANCHIPURAM ,’ India.
Kanchipuram is one of the Seven Holy Cities in India with Goddess “Kamakshi Amman” Ruling. Kanchi Puram means, Ka - Bramha, Anchi - Worshipped (Lord Vishnu) Puram - City.
~Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple - Kanchipuram , Tamil nadu state, India.
Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple is one of the most famous temples in Kanchipuram that was built by the kings of Vijayanagara Dynasty in the 12th Century. It is one of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu. The main God of this temple is Lord Vishnu and He is known by the name “Athi Varadaraja Perumal”. The main idol of the Lord Athi Varadhar is said to have been installed by Lord Brahmma Himself. Varadha means “Giver of Blessings or Boons”.
There is something really special and remarkable about this Temple. Since 01-July-2019 ,lakhs of hindu devotees are thronging to this temple for a “Rare Darshan”.
On 01-July-2019, the idol called “Athi Varadar” was taken out of the temple Sacred Tank - ‘Ananta Sarovar’ and has been kept for darshan. This is also called “Athi Varadhar Rising” .Lord Athi Varadhar is taken out of the water once in 40 years and worshipped for 48 days. Lord Athi Varadhar will be placed out for 48 days for darshan. The last time when Lord Varadhar gave Darshan was in July -1979 and the next darshan will be in July-2059.
~ Ananta Sarovar - the temple sacred tank , where ‘HE’ resides within worshipped by Aananta Sesha.
WHY THE WORSHIP ONLY ONCE EVERY 40 YEARS?
Athi Varadar was originally worshiped by Lord Brahma in Satya-yuga, by Gajendra in Treta-yuga, by Sage Brihaspathi in Dwapara-yuga and by Ananta Shesha in Kali-yuga.
Once while Lord Brahma was performing a yagna (fire sacrifice), in Kanchipuram, the fire touched the wooden Deity of Sri Athi Varadar. Brahma asked the Lord for a remedial measure to worship the Deity; the Lord instructed him to keep the Deity in the lake surrounded by the replicas of Ananta Shesha. Hence the Deity is till date in the temple pond.
~ The Place within the temple tank where the Lord himself rest’s .
~ The Lord is risen from the temple tank to be worshipped by HIS devotees for a period of 48 days.
While Brahma worshiped the Deity alone, Lord Vishnu tells Brahma,”You are worshiping Me constantly. You should also give an opportunity to others for worship as well”.To this Lord Brahma agreed to allow the Lord’s worship only for a few nano seconds. Similarly, when Gajendra and Brihaspathi were worshiping, they allowed the worship during their period only for a few minutes on Lord Vishnu’s request.
In a similar manner, when Ananta Shesha worships, he allows the worship to be offered by others for 48 days i.e, once in 40 years only. After this period of 1 mandala, the Lord is immersed back in the Ananta Sarovar to be worshiped by Ananta Shesha for next 40 years. Ananta Sarovar is the sannidhanam of Lord Ananta Shesha.
As per the shastras, the time varies from the upper planetary systems to the lower planetary systems. A moment of Brahma residing in the Satyaloka which is the top-most planetary system in this material realm, is considered as a year on this Bhooloka (planet earth) and so on.This year the auspicious period for the Lord’s worship by the devotees is from 01 July 2019 to 18 Aug 2019. The next darshan would be in 2059.
THE HISTORY OF ATHI VARADAR DEITY
The Deity of Athi Varadar is one among the four Deities of Lord Varadaraja worshiped by Brahma. In the Satya-yuga this Deity was carved out of Fig tree wood by ‘Vishwakarma - the divine architect’. This was the mula-vigraha worshiped in the sanctum of the Kanchi Varadaraja Perumal Temple until the early 16th century. Due to the Muslim invasion, the Athi Varadar vigraha was immersed inside the sacred pushkarani of the temple secretively and the truth was known only to one family.
~Athi Varadar being carried by HIS devotees in to the temple from the temple tank with great pomp .
For forty long years, the temple had no Deity for worship thus no puja happening in the temple. The two brothers in the Dhatacharya lineage under whose authority the Deity was hidden, passed away thus taking away the secret forever. Their two sons tried their best to bring back the Deities to Kanchipuram. One Madhwa devotee brought the utsavar back from the Udayar Palayam forest and utsavar puja began.
Unable to locate the original Deity of Athi Varadar, the authorities of the temple decided to install the Deity made out of stone and thus the Deity was brought from the Padma Giri in Pazayaseevaram located approximately 30 kms from Kanchipuram. This Deity was known as Devaraja Perumal and was worshiped by Athri Rishi. He very much resembled Athi Varadaraja. Pazayaseevaram is located on the confluence of Payasvini, Vegavathi and Bahunadhi rivers.
~devotees throng in huge numbers to worship the lord .
Around 1709 the pushkarani (temple sacred tank) of the temple was emptied and Lord Athi Varadar was seen at the base of the sacred tank. The authorities then decided to take the vigraha out only once in forty years for 48 days and keep Him back. This Deity is kept safely inside the Ananta Sarovar – the temple pushkarani of Varadaraja Temple in Kanchipuram for forty years. Only once in forty years, the Deity is brought out for the darshan for 48 days. This decision was taken based on the above mentioned spiritual reason.
Darshan details for those interested:
July 1- August 15, 2019 : Daily 5 a.m.-5 p.m. Up to 8 p.m. on special days. Free entry and ₹50 entry through East Rajagopuram. Online booking of ₹500 for special darshan and Sahasranama archana, from July 4 through website: www.tnhrce.org. Entry through West Gopuram.

The Story of Pandava Nirjala Ekadashi: Once Bhimasena, the younger brother of Maharaja Yudhishthira, asked the great sage Shrila Vyasadeva, the grandfather of the Pandavas, if it is possible to return to the spiritual world without having observed all the rules and regulations of the Ekadashi fasts. Bhimasena then spoke as follows, "Oh greatly intelligent and learned grandfather, my brother Yudhishthira, my dear mother Kunti, and my beloved wife Draupadi, as well as Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, fast completely on each Ekadashi and strictly follow all the rules, guidelines and regulative injunctions of that sacred day. Being very religious, they always tell me that I should also fast on that day too. But, Oh learned grandfather, I tell them that I cannot live without eating, because as the son of Vayudeva - Samanaprana, (the digestive air) hunger is unbearable to me. I can give widely in charity and worship Lord Keshava properly with all manner of wonderful upacharas (items), but I cannot be asked to fast on Ekadashi. Please tell me how I can obtain the same merits result without fasting." Hearing these words, the grandsire of Bhima, Shrila Vyasadeva said, "If you want to go to the heavenly planets and avoid the hellish planets, you should indeed observe a fast on both the light and dark Ekadashis." Bhima replied, "Oh great saintly intelligent grandfather, please listen to my plea. Oh greatest of munis, since I cannot live if I eat only once in a day, how can I possibly live if I fast completely? Within my stomach burns a special fire named Vrika, the fire of digestion. Agni the fire-god, descends from Lord Vishnu through Brahma, from Brahma to Angirasa, from Angirasa to Brihaspathi, and from Brihaspathi to Samyu, who was Agni's father. He is the gatekeeper in charge of Nairritti, the south-eastern direction. He is one of the eight material elements, and Parikshit Maharaja, he is very expert at examining things. He examined Maharaja Shibi once by turning into a dove. (for further information on this incident see Shrila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada's Shrimad Bhagavatam commentary to 1:12:20. Purport.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CeqXeYsrMXX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
