the few times i've tried to buy clothes online from an american retailer? i have to buy 2 or even 3XL. and i have never felt worse about my weight than when looking at a 3XL tag that's still a bit uncomfortably small, where my nz M is much easier to wear

i can't imagine how bad i'd feel if that was my experience in every single shop i went to

so i just wanna say, if you're around my size, or even bigger than me, you are a normal weight. you are not inhumanly big. and while it really sucks if you can't find clothes that cater to you in your country, that's a failure of the manufacturers, not a failure of you

Queen Mary's Birthday Weekend

In NZ, the first Monday of June is a public holiday known as the Queen's Birthday. My friend Mary's sorority big sister/rave mom was getting married back in the States during the Queen's Birthday Weekend and the pandemic prevented her from going. To keep the celebration alive, she invited a bunch of her friends to Nelson to co-party. Mary’s birthday was about a week and a half before the trip, so in addition to the Queen, and her friend's wedding, we were celebrating her.

On Friday morning, I arrived in Blenheim to find out that my bag was missing. The Air NZ employee I spoke to had a real "she'll be right" attitude about it. My inner New Yorker was raging but I tried to embrace the Kiwi culture. Mary had arranged for her friends, Morgan and Andrew, to pick me up from the airport and drive me to Nelson.

Morgan and Andrew's kind and supportive nature eased me into a state of relaxation. Not too long into the drive, I got a call from Air NZ saying that they had located my bag and were flying it to Nelson. We decided to make a day of it and headed into the town to explore.

We were welcomed by the beautiful bay view and remaining yellow-leaved autumn trees. There, we ate falafel, rummaged through a vintage store, and did some light shopping. Next thing we knew, my bag was ready. We quickly popped by the Nelson airport and then headed to the Airbnb. Up a steep gravel road we went, passing by curious alpacas and hefty sheep on the way.

People trickled in as we watched the sun set over the bay from our deck. Andrew, Morgan, and I were on dinner duty. Morgan was the head chef in charge of the "Glowing Spiced Lentil Soup". He put me to work on the flatbreads. I should mention that all of the meals for the weekend were vegan and gluten-free to accommodate a variety of dietary restrictions among the group. I made a mess mixing gf flour and coconut yogurt, but to my surprise the flatbreads were a hit! The soup was even better.

The next morning, we awoke to Conagh and Logan making pancakes. After brekkie, about half of us ventured to the Saturday market. It was filled with a variety of arts, crafts, and specialty food stands. I succumbed to the market temptations and bought several rimu wood kitchen utensils in addition to hand-dyed yarn for my new knitting hobby. The dreary drizzly weather eventually drove us to leave.

Back at the house, we played games, had interesting chats, and got comfy in the "snug-pit". Mary, Olive, and Andy put together a lovely spread of roasted veggies for dinner. After dinner, Mary and Reuben introduced me to their favorite house game, affectionately referred to as the train game (otherwise known as Ticket to Ride). I was hesitant at first but ended up getting really into it.

Sunday was wedding day! Reuben made us an array of hearty brunch nachos to start the day off right. Then, we watched the ceremony from the snug-pit. Mary got dressed in her bridesmaid dress and periodically video-chatted with a variety of wedding guests.

Feeling a bit antsy, a few of us left the house to go for a foggy beach stroll. It was nice to stretch our legs, but the less-than-perfect weather stopped us from staying out for long. Back at the house, we played more games and watched a few episodes of Love + Death & Robots. Giulka and Luke made a lentil bolognaise for dinner. We ended the night with a lively game of Telephone Pictionary.

The next morning we packed up, cleaned the house, and played a game of musical food to distribute the trip leftovers. Finding a place that was open in Nelson on the holiday was difficult, but we persevered! We ate brunch at River Kitchen and said our goodbyes. Alex, Luke, Giulka, and I strolled through the botanical gardens before they dropped me at the airport.
