Rookie-Critic's Top 25 Films of 2022: #13: The Banshees of Inisherin (dir. Martin McDonagh)
This is an interesting one. Martin McDonagh's most outwardly-facing sad movie to date can be viewed through the lens of pure desperation and hopelessness, and there is an aspect of it that certainly is, as the film is in part a gigantic metaphor for the Irish Civil War of the early 1920s. However, and this is the reason the film truly shines for me, there is a strangeness here that almost feels hopeful. I have yet to give this a rewatch, which I would really like to do, but I remember feeling like not all hope was lost for Colin Farrell's Pádraic by the time the credits started to roll. Sure, there was an innocence that was lost, but by the end of the film there's a difference in the way Pádraic sees the world. It's maybe not the rose-tinted place he thought it was, and maybe that's a good thing. There's not a lot that can be said in talking about how I personally feel about Banshees without spoiling it, but I do encourage people to give this one a watch. It seems that every person I've talked to that's seen it has walked away from it with something different than the others who have watched it, making it the film on this list that might be the hardest to pin down. Currently streaming on HBO Max. You can read my full review of The Banshees of Inisherin here.

VIFF 2024 Review: Frewaka
Clare Monnelly plays a student nurse who senses something troubling and beyond her control in her patient’s house in Frewaka. It’s very rare to see a film in the Gaelic language at the VIFF. Frewaka, from the Altered States series, is that film and a lot more. The film begins in 1973. There’s a wedding in a local village. The wedding is crashed by village locals in traditional fashion wearing…

The Banshees of Inisherin (15): An superlative dark comedy of two men at loggerheads.
#onemannsmovies review of "The Banshees of Inisherin" (2022). #Banshees_Movie. A dark comedy that is utter movie perfection (so). 5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022). Do you have some embarrassing gaps in your film watching history? Movies that you really think you should have watched but never got around to? One of those on my personal list is “In Bruges” (2008) – the directorial feature debut of director Martin McDonagh and starring Colin Farrell and Brendon Gleeson. It’s even sat here in my…
