If you’re looking for a fresh and modern upgrade, a modular kitchen could be the perfect choice. In Mumbai, where space is at a premium and design trends evolve rapidly, choosing the best modular kitchen design is crucial to maximizing both style and utility. However, with so many different styles available, it can be challenging to decide which one will work best for your home. In this blog, we’ll compare some of the most popular styles of the best modular kitchen design in Mumbai to help you make an informed decision.
Tumblr media
1. Contemporary Modular Kitchen Design
A contemporary modular kitchen design is all about sleek lines, minimalist features, and modern functionality. This style embraces clean aesthetics and focuses on creating an uncluttered, efficient workspace. The use of neutral tones such as white, grey, and black, along with a high-gloss or matte finish, makes it perfect for those looking for a sophisticated and polished look. Key Features:
Neutral color palettes
Simple, functional design elements
High-end finishes like glass, stainless steel, or lacquered surfaces
Hidden or integrated appliances for a seamless look
2. Traditional Modular Kitchen Design
For those who prefer a more timeless and classic aesthetic, a traditional modular kitchen design brings warmth and charm to your home. This style typically features rich wood tones, intricate detailing, and a more rustic feel. While the layout is often designed for practicality, traditional kitchens can also include elegant touches such as decorative moldings, ornate cabinet handles, and classic backsplashes. In Mumbai, where many homes incorporate traditional elements, this style blends seamlessly with contemporary architecture to create a kitchen that feels both homey and stylish. The best modular kitchen design in Mumbai with traditional influences often focuses on creating a cozy, inviting environment for family gatherings.
Key Features:
Rich wood tones like mahogany, oak, and walnut
Ornate detailing and decorative touches

3. Industrial Modular Kitchen Design
The industrial style is ideal for those looking for a bold, urban aesthetic. Inspired by warehouses and factory settings, industrial modular kitchen designs feature raw, unfinished materials such as exposed brick, concrete, metal, and wood. In Mumbai, where many urban homes are being designed with an industrial edge, this style complements modern apartments, lofts, and open-plan spaces. The best modular kitchen design in Mumbai with an industrial twist uses stainless steel surfaces, metal shelves, and bold lighting fixtures to create a rugged yet chic atmosphere. It’s a style that makes a statement while still being practical and easy to maintain.

4. Minimalist Modular Kitchen Design
A minimalist modular kitchen design focuses on simplicity, functionality, and clean aesthetics. The minimalist approach is particularly popular in Mumbai’s smaller apartments, where the goal is to optimize space without sacrificing style. The best modular kitchen design in Mumbai for minimalist lovers often features sleek, handleless cabinets, integrated appliances, and hidden storage to create a clutter-free environment. The result is a sophisticated, streamlined kitchen that feels both spacious and inviting.
Key Features:
Neutral color schemes like white, beige, and grey

5. Rustic Modular Kitchen Design
Rustic modular kitchen designs embrace warmth, natural materials, and a cozy, country-inspired vibe. While rustic kitchens often feature wood beams, distressed cabinetry, and stone finishes, the best modular kitchen design in Mumbai with a rustic flair will incorporate these elements into a modern, functional layout. In Mumbai, where apartments often have limited space, a rustic design can incorporate lighter woods and smaller pieces to ensure that the space feels open yet comfortable.
Key Features:
Natural wood finishes with a distressed or aged look

NATURAL QUARTZITE
From many centuries, marble and other types of natural stone have symbolized wealth and power when used for flooring and other surfaces in residential dwellings. In the ancient civilizations of Persia, Greece, and Italy, the hand labor involved in quarrying, cutting, and transporting natural stone meant that it was only the wealthiest citizens or the government itself who could afford to use these materials in their buildings. Although modern equipment and transportation systems now make it more accessible to more people, marble and other natural stone is still a building material that retains a royal Stone.
THICKNESS
Many people ask about the thicknesses of the travertine tiles. It may be because they are trying to minimize the impact the new floor is going to have on doors and counters. Sometimes its because they want to make sure its to use on the walls. Other times it’s just because they want the thinnest possible for handling purposes. Here are some nuggets that might help as far as Stone norms are concerned.
SIZES AVAILABLE WITH US
• 12″x12″ and smaller are usually going to be 3/8″ thick. A tile that is 3/8″ thick is going to weigh about 5.5 lbs per square foot. • 16″x16″ and 18″x18″ are usually going to be 1/2″ thick. A tile that is 1/2″ thick is going to weight about 6 lbs per square foot. • 24″x24″ tiles are usually going to be 5/8″ thick. A tile that is 5/8″ thick is going to weight about 8 lbs per square foot. • Keep in mind that custom thicknesses for each size are possible and slabs can be done in 1.5 cm and 2 cm thicknesses.
CREATING THE PERFECT NURSERY FOR TWINS
Residential trends come and go. It was not that long ago when condominium developers in large metro areas came up with the idea of designing floor plans without functional kitchens. The idea was that the advent of smartphone apps and food delivery services would prompt city dwellers to forgo cooking altogether. However, things turned out differently as homeowners these days are making design statements with gourmet kitchens that boost the overall value of their properties.
When it comes to flooring material for the kitchen, natural-stone tiles are the obvious choice. Cork, wood, and vinyl flooring have certain advantages, but they do not come close to matching the attractive look and sheer durability of natural stone. Here are some of the best options for natural-stone floors in the kitchen.
GRANITE
Granite is the best popular choice of stone in the use of domestic and commercial purposes. Granite is stain resistant and durable stone, it’s wide and colors make the most beautiful stone for a lifetime. Granites are usually found in makrana mountain ranges. Bhandari Marbles is a top leading granite company in India to produce quality and strongest granites. Our best granite is famous for the combination of beauty.
Granite is a great option for homeowners who have previously chosen granite slabs for their kitchen counters. Ideally, the floor tiles should be selected at the same time as the slabs for the counters for matching purposes. The granite looks great, and it also lasts for a very long time as long as it is properly maintained. Luckily for homeowners, cleaning and resealing granite can be accomplished by using a stone-safe granite cleaner and sealer. The granite looks best in gourmet kitchens.
LIMESTONE SLABS & TILES – Black Kota Lime Stone Exporter
Exporter of LIMESTONE SLABS & TILES – Black Kota LimeStone, Machine Cut Black Limestone, Black Kadappa. This material is ideal for kitchens with a rustic or traditional style. Limestone that has been extracted from quarries in the Middle East and Northern Africa tends to have a very attractive and unique look. As limestone is very porous, it is important to choose tiles with higher density, and the protective seal must be reapplied often.
MARBLE
Marble may seem like an unusual choice for the kitchen, but it should be noted that it is the metamorphic result of limestone being exposed to higher igneous temperatures, which causes a process of crystallization. Marble is very durable and will look great in any kitchen. However, it requires a professional finish to make the surface less slippery.
SLATE
Homeowners who favor a rustic or industrial look for their kitchen should consider slate flooring, particularly darker tones that are not prone to staining. The typical finish of slate makes it look natural with only a slight polish that highlights the nonslip texture. Slate tends to look very sharp when paired with kitchen cabinets that feature a light and natural wood finish.
TRAVERTINE
Many regions of India choose travertine for their kitchen and dining room floors for three reasons: it looks great, lasts long, and can be easily maintained as long as it has been adequately honed, filled, and sealed. When chosen for the kitchen floor, travertine should be finished with a natural look instead of a glossy appearance. Travertine is ideal for open floor plans decorated with natural stone. A stone slab is a big stone, flat and of little thickness, that are generally used for paving floors, for covering walls or as headstones.

Individualistic Home Designs With A Sassy Sense Of Style
A sassy sense of style runs through the two individualistic home designs that we tour here. Our first intriguing home tour takes place in a meticulous restoration of a large 5-bedroom townhouse, which features beautifully restored woodwork, custom details and around 8,000 square feet of light-filled interiors. Colourful artwork and an eclectic furniture collection shape living spaces that draw the eye and excite the mind. The second home design we visit is a loft, located in the historic Gilsey House building in the NoMad neighbourhood of Manhattan. Industrial features hark to its history, whilst bold art pieces, colourful accents and a bespoke staircase design make the loft into a marvellously modern and uplifting home.
Source: Compass
Led by award-winning architect, Jeffery Povero of Povero&Company, this 20ft wide single-family townhouse renovation includes five bedrooms, six bathrooms and immaculately rejuvenated living spaces. Colourful wall art brings the light-flooded lounge to life. Bright scatter cushions and throws colour the sofas, whilst a large area rug adds texture to the floor.
The glorious wooden staircase has been restored, bringing rich warmth to each floor of the townhouse. In the dining room, a multicoloured rug adds a bright contemporary touch by the classic woodwork. A modern dining room chandelier fills the fresh white ceiling space.
The townhouse boasts an interior of approximately 8,000 square feet. An enormous kitchen is blessed with an impressive central island that doubles as a casual dining/breakfast spot.
Industrial style kitchen bar stools line up beneath the clean white corian countertop. Five elegant pendant lights meander above the length of the island.
Grey and white framed kitchen cabinets build a custom look. Two side-by-side 6-burner Wolf ranges and a farmhouse sink place focal points in the arrangement. One small doorway leads into an oversized pantry, whilst French doors lead onto an intimate balcony with a grill and outdoor dining bar that overlooks 5th Avenue.
The entryway features more exquisite woodworking and original dark-wood wainscoting, beneath impressive 12ft high ceilings.
An eclectic furniture collection builds a sophisticated look.
A chestnut brown tufted leather sofa complements a rich wood coffered ceiling in the cosy library/den.
In the corner, a librarian ladder climbs the book stacks. An elegant chair and side table fashion a cosy reading nook.
In the back parlour lounge, wise monkey figurines top a vintage bar that was sourced from an old hotel.
The bar was restored and fitted with new appliances, electrics and plumbing.
The top floor of the five story townhouse contains three of the bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room and a “hidden” office.
A production office is located on the garden level of the home. Streamlined desks, exposed brickwork and industrial style lighting gives this space its own distinctive character from the house.
The property also boasts its own ten seat home theatre.
String lights add a magical twinkle up on the fully furnished roof deck.
A dining area is partially shaded under a wood pergola, whilst the outdoor sofa and chairs bask in the sun.
A Jacuzzi bubbles in a rooftop hideaway.
The master bedroom suite is on the third floor. A small sofa aesthetically matches the upholstered bed. A large bedroom rug holds the arrangement together.
A second bedroom harbours a quirky zoo of ceramic animal heads across the TV wall.
The master bathroom features a double sink bathroom vanity with a luxe Nero Marquina marble countertop.
A custom walk-in closet offers a plethora of clothing and accessory storage options.
2036 Fifth Avenue is located just one block from 125th Street, a vibrant boulevard lined with restaurants and shops.
Architect: Worrell Yeung
We travel next to an apartment located in the historic Gilsey House building, in the NoMad neighbourhood of Manhattan.
During this remodel, all existing walls were removed to highlight the historic windows, original moulding, and steel structure. Now natural sunlight hits clean white walls and vibrant artwork at every turn.
A light grey kitchen provides gentle contrast against the white backdrop.
Henry Le Monnier’s Source Verdier, 1931, makes an eye-catching addition above the stove and a stunning marble backsplash.
A small shelf is integrated into the dramatic marble slab.
The exposed steel structure of the building creates a cool industrial vibe.
A built-in bookcase rises in front of the stairs, creating one connected wooden volume within the open layout.
Sections of the bookcase remain backless to let light and visuals flow through.
The custom staircase design melds smoothly with the bookshelves.
Decorative items break up the book collection.
Bright wall art fashions areas of interest as we move through the loft.
Reclaimed wood doors were salvaged and refurbished to create historical interludes within the minimalistic decor scheme.
Exposed pipes continue the industrial thread throughout the loft, sometimes colourfully highlighted in a playful pink finish.
A home workspace has been created with a bespoke black marble desktop and a lively gallery wall.
Another custom-built bookcase and staircase combo build a cool kid’s space.
This time, cheerful turquoise paintwork colours the shelves and treads. Ash wood floors brighten the space.
A wild black and white decor scheme brings the family bathroom to life. Bold yellow bathroom fixtures further accentuate the fabulous concept.
The floor plan demonstrates how the master bathroom runs off the long dressing area of the master suite. The child’s room has access to the family bathroom just opposite, by the stairs.

We Predict These Kitchen Trends Will Be Everywhere in 2021@|what is new in kitchen design@|https://ift.tt/3h75BTp
Tumblr media
DANA GALLAGHER
While the all-white kitchen will probably never go out of style, there are lots of new design trends for 2021 that will make you equally happy. Think: natural elements with some pops of color as well as a visit to the dark side with colors you might never expect. We know, we know. You’ve already carefully chosen every appliance, picked out each piece of hardware, and planned your kitchen design to a T, but there are ways to dip your toes into the world of color without messing up your rustic farmhouse kitchen aesthetic. On the color front, why not try painting your ceiling a fun color, like Haint Blue? How about hauling in some colorful appliances?

Tumblr media
Join the Country Club today and enjoy exclusive access to home tours, seasonal craft projects, recipes and, more!
If you’ve been wanting to layer in more natural elements, try “sustainable” and “eco-friendly” items. These are words that are popping up more and more, with many companies offering green solutions for cabinets and shelving. You can also think about bringing in handmade tiles in materials like terra-cotta and cement—a great solution for adding a little more soul to your space, regardless of whether or not you opt to completely switch over to a farmhouse style vibe.
When it comes to countertops, quartz is quickly becoming an affordable and low maintenance alternative to our beloved marble. There are even new trends for accessorizing your countertops, like vintage plate racks made to display your grandmother’s china. Hardware and metal finishes continue to push the envelope—think brass, nickel, and matte black. Removable wallpaper companies are making it even easier to experiment with pattern on walls and backsplashes. Consider 2021 as the year of the kitchen!

Kitchens with Curves
You’ve probably seen it trending in furniture design and we love how it is translated into this beautiful designed by Tiffany Leigh Design. Head over to her blog to read more about this space. It is packed with fun ideas!
2 of 39
Integrated Range Hood
Designer Stefani Stein created a seamless look in this kitchen where the range blends right in to the subway tile walls.
3 of 39
Colorful Kitchen Islands
Try painting your kitchen island a striking color like Alison Giese Interiors did on this project. We love how it stands out and contrasts the other white cabinets.
4 of 39
Bright Colored Cabinets
Because we all need a little more sunshine in our lives after 2020, am I right?! Pair them with a fun backsplash, and you will smile every time you walk into your happy kitchen!
5 of 39
Modern Black
As suggested by Semihandmade, “If you’re going for a trendy look, start with black cabinets and really commit to the modern approach by nixing those upper cabinets in favor of sleek natural wood open shelving.” Just like Yellow Brick Home did with this space, using cabinet doors by Semihandmade.
6 of 39
New Rustic
We know the rustic look has been around for a long time now, but if you pair it with a pop of fresh paint like Designer Hadley Wiggins-Marin did here, you can really and modernize redefine that rustic look.
7 of 39
Terra Cotta Tiles
When you think of terra cotta you probably have warm and earthy thoughts of potted plants and garden shops. Pair that material with soapstone countertops and classic brass hardware, and you have a unique yet traditional and beautiful kitchen. We love everything happening in this space, especially those terra cotta floors!

Marble Kitchen Countertops
Carrara marble like that shown here will always be in style, but if you’re a red wine drinker, quartz could be a much better fit for you and your kitchen. While it looks like a natural stone, engineered quartz is more affordable and less prone to stains.
SHOP WHITE SHELVES

Kitchen Larders
Originally a room in the home used for storing and preserving foods (think: the refrigerator before the refrigerator was invented), the kitchen larder has transformed into a stand-alone cupboard or pantry. They can be large enough to house the majority of your dry goods but small enough to keep things organized while taking up a minimal amount of valuable space. Forget a walk-in and sub in counter-top cabinet or add doors to enclose pre-existing shelving.
SHOP PANTRY STORAGE
10 of 39
Handmade Kitchen Tiles
Bring texture and nuance to your kitchen walls with handmade tiles. The possibilities are vast—try terra-cotta or cement in colors that range the rainbow—although we lean toward more neutral hues.
SHOP LIGHTING FIXTURES

The 5th Wall (The Kitchen Ceiling)
Don’t forget about your kitchen ceiling! Add a fun hit of color, wallpaper, or wood paneling to add dramatic flair to your space.
SHOP BLACK WALL PAINT
12 of 39
Reclaimed Wood Kitchen Cabinetry
If you’re installing custom cabinets, opt for a rough-hewn, reclaimed wood. And good news if you’re going pre-fab, companies such as IKEA are moving to more natural, eco-friendly materials for their kitchen cabinets. From bamboo to even recycled plastic bottles, cabinet companies are taking this revival of reduce and reuse very seriously.
SHOP KITCHEN STOOLS

Kitchen Wallpaper
While wallpaper has become less scary to the general population over the last five years or so, folks are still reluctant to hang it in the kitchen. If you’re scared about the permanency of wallpaper, try something less, well, permanent. There are plenty of peel-and-stick papers in trendy designs that are incredibly easy to install and remove. Hot tip: Opt for a graphic design that mimics the look of tile.
SHOP PEEL AND STICK WALLPAPER
14 of 39
Kitchen Plate Racks
Vintage plate racks are coming back in a big way in 2021. Whether displayed on countertops or mounted on walls, they add a ton of soul to a space and give you an actual place to store and display your dishware instead of hiding it away in a hutch or cupboard.
SHOP BLUE GINGHAM NAPKINS
15 of 39
Mix-and-Match Kitchen Metals
The year 2021 is not about being matchy-matchy—and that goes double for your heavy metals. Choose a nice nickel for your knobs and then go with a cool brass or matte white for your faucet. Choose a whole different metal for your lighting fixtures.
SHOP KITCHEN RUGS
16 of 39
Hidden Kitchen Appliances
Not a fan of stainless steel facades? Try adding fronts to your appliances that mimic your cabinetry. Refrigerators and dishwashers disappear when clad to match their cabinet cohorts. Even your massive oven hood can get in on the action.
SHOP KITCHEN STOOLS
17 of 39
Open Shelving
Open shelves allow you to showcase your beautiful kitchenwares among other heirlooms and antiques. The ability to see through your storage also means everything is easy to find. Just don’t forget to clean your items often since they will be open to the elements that might be floating through your kitchen. It’s also helpful to keep every day items on the lowest, most accessible shelf.
SHOP SHELVING
18 of 39
Standout Sinks
You don’t have to go nuts to achieve an on-trend kitchen. While an apron-front sink in a farmhouse kitchen isn’t exactly unexpected, a farmhouse sink in soapstone with brass hardware is a showstopper—especially when it’s set against white walls, wood cabinets, and stainless steel countertops.
[external_link offset=2]
SHOP BRASS HARDWARE
19 of 39
Natural Wood Tones in the Kitchen
While we’re still seeing stained and painted woods, we’re also seeing it in its natural state. Try adding a kitchen island—or just the topper—in a pretty, grainy wood. Brown wooden shelves that feel original to the house are another way to test the waters with wood. It will bring a warmth to any kitchen space, especially those trending bright white ones!
SHOP SWIVEL STOOLS
20 of 39
Tons of Texture
For those who fear color, focus on mixing up the finishes. Designer Cathy Chapman chose white beadboard on the ceiling and shiplap for the walls. She used unlacquered brass strap hinges and latches on the cabinets, black marble on the island countertop, and tons of warm woods on the floors, backsplash, and remaining countertops.
SHOP SHIPLAP
21 of 39
Swoon-Worthy Ceilings
When you want to maintain neutrality but still have some fun in the kitchen, shoot for the stars—or in this case, the ceiling. Here, the Madcap Cottage team chose to paint the ceiling a Southern porch-inspired blue (Blue Ground by Farrow & Ball) and added an elaborate antique lantern.
SHOP BLUE PAINT
22 of 39
Hints of Color
You don’t have to scrap an all-white kitchen to stay on trend. Dip your toe in the color pool instead, whether you store colorful pottery in glass-front cabinets, bring in colorful furniture, or paint a large piece like this kitchen island in Tropical Moss by Dunn-Edwards Paints.
SHOP YELLOW PAINT

Open Kitchen and Living Areas
Maximize living space by making the family room and kitchen one large room. A mix of lighting helps differentiate the areas, while a uniform wall color keeps everything cohesive.

Pretty Pantries
Gone are the days of having a dark little pantry to house dry goods hidden away from prying eyes. Today’s kitchens boast roomy pantries with shelving aplenty for your cereals and collectibles. Proud of your organizational skills and want to show off? Finish the pantry space with a screened porch door painted in an eye-catching color, like this bright green hue.
SHOP GREEN PAINT

Appliance makers like Lacanche, Big Chill, and Smeg offer up a host of practical pieces in a number of colors and finishes, which will definitely liven up your range.

Butcher Block Countertops
In this Massachusetts beach house, a savvy couple replaced linoleum with warm wood for a durable upgrade. Butcher block is virtually maintenance-free—it just needs an occasional coating of mineral oil—and the natural material is the perfect neutral to break up the sterility of an all-white palette.

SANDSTONE-THE ESSENCE OF TRADITIONAL AND MODERN INTERIOR DESIGNS BY BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP
Tumblr media
Sandstone - The Essence of traditional and Modern Interior Designs
home is not just a concrete structure made of bricks and mortar. It is more than a set of rooms, bathroom, kitchen, patio, entryways, and garden. The presence of family members makes a particular space ideal for living in. From walls to floors and from roof to outdoor space, everything matters the most. Your home is the symbol of your status. Hence, making an eye-catching and durable living room is more worthy than an expensive concrete structure. It is possible with natural stones that add sophistication and durability to homes.
“The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live. It is about the realities of what makes for an attractive, civilized, meaningful environment, not about fashion or what’s in or what’s out. This is not an easy job.” – Albert Hadley, one of most influential interior decorators and designers
In contemporary and traditional-styled living rooms, natural stones, like marble, granite, slate, limestone, quartzite, and sandstone, are widely used. Every natural stone product has a specific utility to render a new meaning to the architectural excellence. Here, putting natural stones in the right places (walls, floors, countertops, and backsplashes) matters the most. It guides in upgrading a living room with the help of a certified and professional natural stone company.
A beautiful living room that lasts for many years A lively living room is always accompanied by furniture that includes a sofa, chairs, tables, bookshelves, electric lamps, rugs, etc. Additionally, walls, floors, and countertops also induce a vital difference. Making a living space more functional and comfortable is essential to bring the most out of a colorful home. You spend maximum time with your family and friends in a living room. Here, natural stone can transform your living room into a comfy and warm place. Suiting your lifestyle granite floor can do wonders. A granite floor and wall made of tiles or slabs is vital for setting the tone of your living room. For combing simplicity and durability innately, emphasize the following ideas:
• Prefer marble for a touch of sophistication in a dynamic living room. • Granite is a superb stone for creating contemporary places. • Do interior wall decorations with limestone, sandstone, slate or natural stone panels. • Decorate only half of the wall with natural stone and paint the other part. • Limestone simply defines a natural atmosphere with its multiple earthy hues.
Marble flooring for living room – One-of-a-kind luxury and elegance When we talk about luxury and elegance in a living room, the very first word strikes our mind is marble flooring. With the presence of natural waves, hues, line, and tone, a marble product promises visual appeal, eternal looks, and long-lasting sturdiness. Marble tiles in a rectangle, triangle, and mosaic cuts deliver unparalleled natural beauty. If you are interested in boosting the resale value of homes, try high-quality, polished marble tiles and slabs for stone flooring from certified Indian marble stone suppliers. Opt for standard sizes:
• Gangsaw slab: 240 x 120 cm up in 2 & 3 cm • Cutter slab: 120 x 60 cm up in 2 & 3 cm • Tiles: 30 x 30; 60 x 30; 60 x 60 with 1 cm thickness

Choosing The Best Natural Stone For Your New Home This week, we are going to rewind back to our blog posts about choosing the best natural stone for different aspects of your home. This week, we are talking about choosing the best natural stone for your new home. Natural stone can offer beauty and uniqueness to your new home.
Here is a list of the best natural stones for your new home:
Factors in choosing the right stone for your new home:
Color
Natural stone comes in a beautiful array of colors. Granite and marble can range from soft beiges and pinks, to classic blacks and whites, to rich reds, greens, and multi-colors. The varied appearance of natural stone gives it wonderful character and creates a one-of-a-kind effect anywhere it is used.
Finish
There is a wide variety of finishes for natural stone and there are constantly new finished appearing in the market. Examples of finishes include: polished, honed, leathered, brushed, and antiqued. Ask your designer about the pros and cons of the different finishes for your project.
Usage
The harder the natural stone is, the more it resists abrasion. Granite is typically the hardest of all the stone types. If you decide to use a softer stone, you, as the homeowner, will have to use gentler cleansers and dust more frequently to prevent scratches.
Natural stone options for your new home:
Marble
This natural stone adds a sophisticated addition to your home. Its appearance and ease of maintenance make it a popular choice for countertops, floors, foyers, fireplaces, and showers. Another option for homeowners that love marble is using serpentine for kitchen counters. It is often called the “green” marble. It’s not a true marble, but does offer a marble-like look.
Granite
Granite is available in a striking array of colors and its durability makes it ideal for kitchen countertops and heavily-used surfaces including tables and floors. Granite offers an impenetrable surface and it is typically not affected by citric acid, coffee, tea, alcohol, or wine. It is nearly impossible to scratch and with proper cleaning will not stain under normal use.
Travertine
Travertine is a type of limestone and one of the most popular natural stones for interior and exterior use. This natural stone is durable, low-maintenance, inexpensive, environmentally-friendly and has a near endless supply of colors and tones to choose from.
Limestone
This stone is widely used as a building stone. Popular uses include countertops, flooring, interior and exterior wall cladding, and exterior paving. Limestone is an extremely versatile material. It can be shaped to make decorative elements to be placed within in your home. Since it is a plentiful material, limestone is a relatively inexpensive material.
Soapstone
Soapstone is growing in popularity and its popular uses include kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, fireplace, and stair treads. Its heat resistance and ability to stay clean make it widely popular in the kitchen. The stone itself can cost you a pretty penny, but it is so easy to install that you can do it yourself.
Sandstone
This natural stone is frequently used for fireplace facings, chimneys, patio benches and poolside. Sandstone is a porous material so if you are going to use it in your kitchen you must properly seal it.
Slate
Slate is a popular flooring material as well as kitchen countertops, fireplace facings, and tabletops. It has care-free maintenance since it is a non-porous material that absorbs little to no contaminants or moisture and requires little to no cleaning. It is a more expensive material upfront, but can add value to your home in the long run. ‘Home Town’ Shocker! Ben and Erin Napier Mix Midcentury Modern With Southern Charm
HGTV; realtor.com
“Home Town” stars Ben and Erin Napier have a very specific home design style that they use to make over houses in Laurel, MI: classic Southern charm. But what happens when these two stray from their usual look in favor of something more modern?
In this week’s episode, this HGTV husband-and-wife design team help their clients Giorgio and Josh create the vacation house of their dreams. Giorgio grew up in Laurel and had moved away, but now he and Josh return to visit a few times a year. They’ve selected a very old-fashioned-looking home, but they want it made over in a midcentury modern style.
Can Erin and Ben pull off this massive makeover, which seems so far out of their comfort zone? Find out how it goes, and pick up a few pearls of wisdom from the choices they make.
New windows make all the difference
These old windows needed an upgrade.
HGTV
Erin and Ben have a quirky name for the windows on Giorgio and Josh’s new house: Florida windows. The reason? Erin explains that she’s seen these long, rectangular shutter panes, which are officially called “louver windows,” on old 1960s houses in Florida.
These new windows give the exterior a much cleaner feel.
HGTV
But the odd name is neither here nor there, once Erin and Ben decide to remove these old windows and replace them with simpler ones that give the home a modern Mississippi style.
In the end, the windows look amazing. As Erin explains, “Windows change everything on an exterior.”
A dark-blue fireplace can brighten a living room
This room needed a strong pop of color.
HGTV
When they first show Josh and Giorgio the living room, they know the space will need some work. It has good bones, but the whole room is stark white and has no personality. Luckily, Erin knows just how to inject some life into it.
After choosing a dark blue for the front door, Erin decides to paint the fireplace to match. It’s a beautiful, masculine color that gives the room some depth. Plus, it provides a perfect mantel for the custom painting Erin has done of Giorgio and Josh’s beloved dogs.
How to remove a bad paint color from brick
Painted brick has come into style in the past decade, but, like everything else in life, there’s a time and a place for it.
A dark-blue fireplace? Great use of color. Green porch brick steps? Maybe not.
Erin and Ben don’t love the green paint on the few steps leading up to the house, so they decide to clean up the look and expose the natural color of the brick. To do this, they cover the steps in solvent, scrub it, and power-wash the paint away.
The exposed brick looks perfect on this house, giving the exterior a more rustic and refined look.
Paint your kitchen cabinets for a more modern look
These brown cabinets made the kitchen feel too dark and dingy.
HGTV
Erin and Ben want to give the kitchen a design that is classic, like the home’s exterior, but they also want to give it a fun, edgy vibe. To do this, they paint the cabinets mossy green and add a backsplash that sparkles with midcentury charm.
These green cabinets give the kitchen a ton of personality.
HGTV
To tie it all together, they offset the dark cabinets and backsplash with a pure white countertop, because, as Erin says, “We need something to keep it light in here.”
Of course, Giorgio and Josh love their new kitchen. It’s a perfect blend of Southern charm and midcentury fun.
Build a ‘his and his’ bathroom
This bathroom feels comfortable but glamorous.
HGTV
When Josh and Giorgio first see this house, they can’t help but notice that the bathroom is a little small … and a little underwhelming. Erin and Ben know they have to make a lot of changes to this bathroom to get it up to snuff. They push out the wall to create more space, upgrade with a gorgeous new shower (with a beautiful glass door), and they install barn doors to create a separate room for the toilet.
But it seems Erin’s favorite upgrade is the “his and his” vanities. The vanities have glamorous white counters, but the black pipe legs give it a rustic feel.
“I was insistent that I wanted something that felt like a really bougie hotel in New York,” says Erin.
Is this house a ‘Home Town’ hit?
Josh and Giorgio had wanted to stay under $150,000 buying and renovating this home—and luckily, Ben and Erin have no problem with that. The house itself costs only $53,000, then, combined with an $80,000 renovation budget, the final all-in price comes out at only $133,000.
And as for the style? While Erin and Ben are used to designing houses with lots of old-fashioned flair, they do an amazing job adding some midcentury modern vibes—proving that modern taste and Southern charm can indeed coexist.

Before & After Home Renovation with Pictures
Designed by Suzanne Bolling of Restyle Design, LLC, this home was a complete renovation! The interior designer took it down to the studs and redesigned the space for this young family. They opened up the main floor to create a large kitchen with two islands and seating for a crowd and a dining nook that looks out to the beautiful front yard. They also created two seating areas, one for TV viewing and one for relaxing in front of the bar area, and added a new mudroom with lots of closed storage cabinets, a pantry with a sliding barn door and a powder room for guests.
This home went from outdated and dark to funky and young. Although the entire home mostly features a white and grey color scheme, pops of tangerine brings a sense of happiness to this home. By the way, tangerine will be the color of 2019!
Feel free to pin your favorite “Before and After” transformations. I did a few collages so you guys would see how this home used to look before the renovation. These are always fun to look at, right?

Empty Nester Townhouse Design Ideas
Built by Timber Trails Development Company and designed by Julie Howard (previously featured here – a must-see post!, here, here, here & here), this townhouse was designed really for empty-nesters downsizing and wanting to maintain really high-end finishes. Here, the interior designer shares some insights:
“The Oxford at Timber Trails is a large ranch style townhome located in Western Springs, a suburb about 20 miles outside of Chicago. This townhouse was designed for someone who wants the ease of a smaller space without having to compromise on the quality and details of the finishes. The dramatic yet neutral color scheme made the perfect backdrop for multiple photo shoots and even a television commercial. The sophisticated and chic black, gold, and white elevate this dramatic home. We hope you enjoy this tour of the house we built to showcase creative and awe-inspiring design.” – Julie Howard, In-house designer for Timber Trails Development Company.
  Empty Nester Townhouse Design Ideas
The exterior of this beautiful townhouse features a grey brick. Brick is Sioux City Aztec White.
Hardie siding in Cobblestone.
Hardie Trim painted Linen – matched to Mastic aluminum sample #44.
Dimensional shingle asphalt roof with metal roof details in Pewter Gray.
Kitchen
Because this townhouse has another unit attached, the kitchen of this home does not have a window in the prep area. We used floating shelves over the kitchen sink to create an open and airy feeling where one usually has a window. If we would have carried the cabinets all around the boxy shaped room it would have felt very closed up and boring. The shelves add so much interest and depth to the kitchen.

Floating Shelves
“Some people will actually use kitchen floating shelves to hold their utility items and grab at them like a chef at a restaurant. I however, like to save that stuff for closed cabinets and use the floating shelves as an area to style like a bookcase. Using frames leaning and stacked up against each other creates a really nice look along side your more traditional kitchen items”. – Julie Howard.

“I used 1x4s over drywall and then a small cove molding around the edges. The whole wall was then sprayed semi-gloss in black. The project cost is minimal on supplies but the layout took hours so labor cost is high”. – Julie Howard

Master Bathroom
“The master bath was inspired by the black and white marble Greek key design. For years I would look at the 4”x12” decorative accent piece at The Tile Shop and wonder how to incorporate it into a spec house. When designing this townhouse, it started to take on a black, white, and gold color scheme and I thought the Greek key would be perfect. Adding a different mosaic tile to the center of the tile rug was bold, but I think it really brought the whole look together”. – Julie Howard
Wall Paint Color – Classic Gray by Benjamin Moore.
Countertop: Caesarstone Countertops in Statuario Maximus.
Tiling: Floor Tile, Greek Key Tile (also here) & Tile Rug Tile – similar

Tiling
The glass shower features marble subway wall and floor tiles and it’s accented with black greek key border tiles.
Shower Tiling: Hampton Carrara from The Tile Shop – similar Lower Tile & Upper Tile, Shower Pan Tile.
Shower Fixtures: Delta.
Basement
The basement features a Family Room with fireplace and a large bar area.
Fireplace Surround: Caesarstone Rugged Concrete
Bar
We created a focal wall behind the bar area using 1x4s and cove molding. The boxes give the area dimension without closing in the area the way a wall of cabinetry would have.
Bar Countertop with waterfall edge – Caesarstone Rugged Concrete.
Faucet – Kohler Bar Faucet in Polished Nickel.
Counterstools: here.
Mudroom
“The mudroom of this house is actually a hallway that connects the bedrooms, the garage, and the laundry room. There is not a closed off area where mess can accumulate. We needed to make sure the mudroom had more than just hooks and a bench. That would get very messy to walk past every day. We had custom built-ins made that hide all the mess. We painted it black so that it felt like a large piece of furniture in a white hallway. The board and batten on the walls gives an architectural feel but also helps to protect the walls in a high traffic area”. – Julie Howard
Mirror & Lighting
The full length mirror and gold fixtures really make this mudroom area sophisticated and chic.
Oversized black mirror anchors space at 78” tall (Homegoods) – similar here – Others: here, here, here & here.
Pendant: Arteriors.

Black Mudroom Cabinet
The black mudroom cabinet is painted in Benjamin Moore Black and it features honed Absolute Granite ledge.

Modern Vietnamese Homes With Green Atriums
Atriums bring in glorious natural light and a feeling of uplifting spaciousness. In the case of these three stunning interior designs, the atrium is also a wonderful opportunity to introduce nature’s green beauty, which instills a sense of peace and rejuvenation into the home. Young trees grow within the walls of these houses, which fashions a unique connection between the ground floor living space and bedrooms upstairs. White, wood, and pale grey decor elements provide gentle companions for the botanical theme. Interior windows and juliette balconies take in the benefits of shared light and fresh cross ventilation–proving the atrium just as relevant now as they were in dwellings of ancient Rome.
Visualizer: Ti Concept   Tree branches tickle the edge of a rising staircase in this 120 square metre home in Vietnam. A bed of shrubs spring around the base of the tree trunk, exploding greenery into the clean white decor scheme.
Natural timber accents warm the ice white room, whilst smoky grey elements add shading and depth.
The staircase is a modern design that combines a crisp white aesthetic with the natural touch of light wood. The base of the staircase fragments into a series of deeper volumes and extended platforms.
Indoor plants are bedded right into the floor between the lounge area and the dining room to grow a live room divider.
In the kitchen, a stylish linear suspension light illuminates a sleek kitchen island design. A chunky white worktop wraps the sides of the wood effect island in an angled cutaway. White and wood kitchen bar stools complement the look.
Glass vases repeat green accents through the home interior, like little echoes of the main event in the atrium.
Cascading greenery tumbles from an internal juliette balcony at the top of the atrium.
A planter on the other side of the void throws out more foliage.
A bridging staircase is painted in an unexpected sunny yellow accent shade.
The warming yellow accent continues to colour block the upper staircase.
Potholes cut into the solid sides of balustrade let in light and aid cross ventilation.
The bedroom is a white and concrete design with stark black bedroom pendant lights. The brown platform bed provides a warming element.
A rounded rectangle window frame is twinned with a vanity mirror of the same shape.
The bathroom’s picture window receives light from the yellow painted stairwell. Inside the bathroom, decor is grey, white, and wood. A black bathroom vanity light complements the black window frame.
The kids’ room comes alive with a mountain mural and a unique peaked headboard design.
Two kid’s chairs pull up at a custom made desk that rises from the bedside cabinet and falls into matching a window seat. The beautiful arched window looks into the green atrium.
An arched doorway complements the window silhouette.
Visualizer: 893 Studio   The living room in our second home is separated from the atrium by modern black frame doors.
The base of the atrium is a pleasant garden area with lawn and outdoor chairs.
With the doors retracted, the atrium becomes part of the open plan layout.
Sunlight beams down onto the modern outdoor chairs and plays over green foliage.
In the kitchen diner there is an apricot colour theme weighted by black accents. A large dining chandelier and a piece of modern art dominate the room.
Up in the master bedroom, modern art makes another splash over a mid century style platform bed. Chevron pattern interrupts the plain white and wood scheme in the form of a monochrome bed throw.
The orange accent introduced by wall art is repeated in the seat pads of wireframe desk chairs.
The next bedroom follows the same white and wood decor scheme and mid century modern furniture style.
Recessed perimeter lights complement the minimalist bedroom aesthetic.
A low bookcase doubles as a media cabinet.
The same floor-hugging bookcase design makes an appearance in a dedicated home workspace, where it merges into a bespoke wooden desk design. A much larger bookcase stacks tall on the opposite side of the work area.
Ground floor plan.
First floor plan.
Visualizer: 893 Studio   Our final home tour showcases an elegant living room design with great stature. A young tree is planted at the foot of a herringbone brick feature wall that climbs high into the second story of the house. Back on the ground floor, the airy grey and white lounge is grounded by an earthy brown area rug.
Brown wooden accents create the base tone throughout the entire ground floor, through a modern media cabinet, coffee table, and cladding at the base of an interesting staircase design.
The herringbone red brick effect also lays a patio area around the base of the atrium’s tree. A couple of small wooden stools sit in quietude at the roots.
The wooden kitchen draws an U-shaped layout just off the side of the dining room. White countertops and matching backsplash keep the area light and bright.
Rattan dining room pendant lights bring in a textured rustic vibe across the wooden dining table and modern dining chairs.
The botanical theme has been extended to the bedrooms with the introduction of leaf art prints and potted plants. A misty grey bed softly disrupts the predominantly white decor, whilst rich wood pieces meld with a coordinating floor.
Sheer drapes pull across balcony windows.
Another botanical print colours a single bedroom layout.
A wood slatted diving wall sections off an additional sleeping area.
The bed on this side of the room has been turned around to view the light filled green atrium.

$1.8 Million Homes in California
Redlands | $1.7995 Million
An 1888 Victorian with eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms in two units; a two-bedroom, two-bathroom carriage house; and a one-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage; on a 0.79-acre corner lot
This house, known as Gray Gables, was built in redwood as a private residence. It was later incorporated into the grounds of the Wissahickon Inn, once a stopping place for notables like Gloria Vanderbilt and Eleanor Roosevelt on their way to Palm Springs, 45 miles southeast. (Los Angeles is 66 miles west.) After falling into disrepair and almost being razed, the property was restored, beginning in 2016, as a family complex, with a rebuilt foundation, new mechanicals and antique and period reproduction details. It is in a historic district two miles south of the city center.
Size: 3,600 square feet (in the main house)
Price per square foot: $499
Indoors: A 2,000-square-foot veranda with intricate woodwork based on the original wraps around three sides of the main house. Inside are engineered hardwood floors (as well as sculpted carpet in the first-floor bedroom) and 10-foot ceilings in most rooms.
The living room has eight-foot-high casement windows with bronze bolts and a Victorian reproduction bronze globe chandelier and wall sconces. Down the hall is a dining room with an arched ceiling, acorn chandelier and Dutch door. It opens to an eat-in kitchen with marble-topped bead-board cabinets, a white subway tile backsplash, a cast-iron sink and cast-iron light fixtures. The six-burner gas cooktop and electric convection oven are set in a reproduction antique stove.
The first-floor bedroom suite includes a Victorian chandelier suspended from an 11-foot ceiling and a large closet with custom shelves. The private bathroom, with its open shower, is ADA-compliant.
The original staircase has been stained to match the flooring. Decorated with globe and acorn finials, it is lit by a vintage pendant lamp.
The three upstairs bedrooms include a master suite with cathedral windows offering mountain views and a bathroom with a penny-round-tiled shower, a toilet closet with a bidet and a reproduction Victorian vanity with a double sink and an antique mirror. There is also a guest suite, a bedroom with a gable window, an office with an industrial pendant light and a hall bathroom with a claw-foot tub and an industrial pipe light fixture with Edison bulbs. The second floor contains a laundry room with a gas-dryer hookup, as well.
A second unit of about 1,700 square feet with a private entrance occupies the basement. It has three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a living room with French doors that open to a front patio and a kitchen with white Shaker cabinets and granite countertops.
Also on the property are a two-bedroom, two-bathroom carriage house that is approximately 1,100 square feet on two floors and an 800-square-foot cottage with one bedroom and one bathroom.
Outdoor space: Wrought-iron fencing encircles the property and incorporates an electric driveway gate. The grounds are planted with roses, bougainvillea, cypress, lavender bushes and orange, apricot and loquat trees. There are three notable mature specimen trees: a live oak, a pine and a palm. The yard includes statuary and a bocce court.
Taxes: $22,494

San Francisco | $1.795 Million
A 1916 clapboard cottage with three bedrooms and one bedroom, on a 0.06-acre lot
From the front porch and upper floor of this house on Portrero Hill, you can see downtown San Francisco and the bay. Across the road is a park with a baseball field, playground and recreation center. Schools, shops, restaurants, breweries and groceries are in the immediate neighborhood, as are train and bus service to downtown. Routes 101 to the west and 280 to the east facilitate commuting to Silicon Valley.
Size: 1,457 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,232
Indoors: The main level has hardwood floors and shiplap-paneled walls and ceiling. On the right side, as you face the back, is a living room with a bay window and built-in bookshelves, followed by an open dining area. Both rooms (and the rest of the home) have been freshly painted and include new lighting.
Immediately to the left is a guest bedroom. Beyond it are a staircase (a walk-in closet built under the stairs serves as a pantry) and a U-shaped kitchen with grooved cabinets and white-tile countertops and backsplashes. Finally, there is a room leading out to the back that could be used as a study, guest quarters or music room.
The two upstairs bedrooms include a guest room facing front and a master with French doors opening to a private balcony overlooking the backyard. The single bathroom is on the main floor and has wood-paneled walls and cabinets, red-tile floors, a pedestal sink and a claw-foot tub with a shower head.
The lower level includes a garage with parking for one large car or two small ones and a bonus room, reached from outside, that could be used as a studio or yoga room.
Outdoor space: The backyard includes a concrete seating area and a garden with mature lemon and lime trees and a large Norfolk pine. The driveway offers parking for two additional cars, side by side.
Taxes: $22,438 (estimated)

Los Angeles | $1.795 Million
A midcentury-modern house built in 1958, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.3-acre lot
This home is in upper Benedict Canyon, in the Beverly Hills Post Office district (with a 90210 ZIP code). The area is a 16-mile drive from downtown Los Angeles and is fringed with nature and its creatures (owls, coyotes and the occasional bobcat). It is two miles below Mulholland Drive and close to a number of hiking trails.
Size: 1,530 square feet
Price per square foot: $1,173
Indoors: Marvin Beck, a local architect, designed the house for himself and his wife. A later owner opened the kitchen to the living room and installed two sets of accordion-fold glass doors in back to dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior. The current owner renovated the master bathroom last year, using slate tile on the walls and a Carrara marble vanity top.
The front door (reached by an exterior flight of stairs) is clad in tongue-and-groove slats that are echoed inside, starting with a floating closet in the foyer that has no visible hardware and opens with a push.
The living room includes a skylight, a wall of built-in drawers and shelves and a fireplace with a combed-basalt surround and hearth. The millwork is echoed in a low partition wall and in the cabinetry in the adjacent kitchen. The golden color is offset by royal blue Viking appliances, patterned glass backsplash tile and honed black granite countertops.
The master is the only room in the house that does not have direct access to the outdoors. It does have book-matched paneled walls and a mirrored closet extending across the entire length.
The guest bedroom has a slatted closet with invisible hardware that runs the length of one wall; it has use of a bathroom with a clerestory window and a walk-in shower faced in the original buttercup-yellow tile. A third bedroom was converted into an open den. Sliding-glass doors in both guest rooms lead to the backyard.
The lower level includes a one-car garage, laundry area and storage.
Outdoor space: The flat, spacious property (unusual in this hilly area) is landscaped with plants that attract hummingbirds and butterflies. A brick patio beyond the folding-glass doors is partially covered by a latticed canopy. Stone-and-gravel paths lead to seating areas in the terraced gardens.
Taxes: $22,438 (estimated)
