We previously had a whole Discourse Session about x reader fic on this blog, but I just saw this in visual form on my dashboard (Blorbo hugging/kissing a greyed-out silhouette instead of the artist's OC), and I am back to thinking how being expected to insert my OC into the author-prepared slot is not my thing (and makes me a bit sad, actually) because... all my OCs fall for their love interest, even if it's the same person, for different reasons.

Isk and Wyll are childhood friends who keep being torn apart by circumstances but inevitably find each other. Mariposa and Wyll are gender-swapped Beauty and the Beast; he is the radiant guiding light that inspires her to rise above her Dark Urge. Wilhelm is a classic sad dad, so his partners Wyll and Karlach help him find joy and whimsy in life again. Or, for example, Alyrr stirs Halsin's heart because she is kind to him, while Cinder falls for Halsin because he is kind to *her*; same goes for Niamh and Zevlor vs Dee and Zevlor.

Likewise, in other fandoms, Azelma Cadash and Blackwall initially despise each other because she thinks he's a boring straight-laced fuddy duddy, and he thinks she's a spoiled princess luxuriating in her father's crime spoils and wearing a Stop Being Poor T-shirt, but as their friendship progresses, each discovers that the other is a more nuanced person than their first impressions might suggest. While Naali Adaar teams up with him as Protector of the Small, and Adiba Adaar turns his head with her incredible Nerd Powers (Nana Lavellan is somewhere at the intersection of that, because she is both a nerd and a professional babysitter in her clan). Thraer Aeducan bonds with Morrigan like a golden retriever excitedly following her around; and Revas Mahariel sits across the room from her like they are a cat and she is also a cat, slowly getting accustomed to each other. Nella Amell gets to Zevran with her sweetness and faith in people, and Zevran gets to Brianna Cousland with his roguish charms, even as she appears to have hidden herself behind a wall of ice and grief.

Alisa Shepard is a neurotic perfectionist, Natalie Shepard is an enthusiastic, confident space adventurer; Garrus loves each of them. And in my newest obsession, Cyberpunk, my current rough and tough but secretly artistic street kid V is going to employ different tactics when convincing Takemura to ditch Arasaka through the power of love (shhh, let me have my headcanon) compared to a hyper-stressed, disillusioned corpo V and a happy-go-lucky nomad V I also have planned. And so on and so on and so on.

Can all these different love stories truly be expressed through x reader fics? Even if x reader is mostly focused on smut, I am not sure how much maneuvering you can do while leaving it generic. Again, going back to my own OCs, Arryn Lavellan, a hot-headed 20-something Dalish First, is a virgin who pretends to be sexually experienced to win Respect Points, and then learns the lesson that he did not have to do that; while Elgara Lavellan, a Circle mage and ex-Tranquil, is also a virgin due to her life circumstances, and her lesson is that there's no shame in having a "first time" after 40. Cinder the Tav is a half-Orc, half-Tiefling, used to being fetishized by intimate partners because of her appearance, so she gets her mind blown when Halsin worships her body as a great gift of nature. Laulu the Tav is a half-Orc, half-Halfling, a humble farm girl with dreams of someone who will love her for her, not her glamorous elf bard persona (courtesy of Disguise Self), so she gets *her* mind blown when Gale takes her, the real her, on a journey through the stars. But Amaya, a full Halfling this time, is a vengeful paladin who used to be married to an evil wizard that entrapped her in illusions of love and bliss in order to manipulate her to do his bidding, so she opts for the humble tryst in the woods, blowing *Gale's* mind this time as he realizes that he can be wanted for more than his magic. So for all of them, even smut will flow differently.

Some anons I got argued that inserting your OC into a love story focused on a canon character is too self-centered; you have to give other people a chance to imagine *their* OCs in this blank spot! And I guess it works for some people (a lot of people, in fact), but I would rather write stories and make art about specific OCs and read stories and admire art with *your* specific OCs and all the endless ways they can kiss that Blorbo.

OC Name Meanings

I had a chuckle about this task at first, because so many of my OC's just use the default name assigned to them in game 😅 With a little think about it however, I realised that I have a few original names after all - mostly all the elves.

Sulahnean Lavellan - just a mash of elven, sulahn - song, and ean - bird. Songbird essentially. Inquisition friends have shortened her name to 'Lani', but Dorian's nickname for her is 'Birdie', which is a nod to him understanding some elven.

Brianna Cousland - apparently Brianna means 'strong'. The reason I chose the name however, was to honour her father, Bryce, as she would have been the apple of his eye from the moment she was born.

Eludysia Lavellan - lifted directly from FenxShiral's Book of Names. In elven it means 'she who is lucky with a secret'. Her friends mostly call her Dysi however. When I first developed Dysi, she was the protagonist for a planned Steampunk AU, in which, in her role as the Inquisitor, she was responsible for tracking down illegal magical artefacts for the Chantry. When she receives the Anchor in an accident, she becomes the very thing she has always hunted. At first it seems she's quite unlucky with her secret, but it ultimately leads her to Solas and long-forgotten truths about the elves.

The Champions

My ancient elvhen OC's predominantly possess the names of their original spirit aspect. They belonged to a minor pantheon, known as the Myth’tunamis - The Champion's of Mythal, or more literally, 'Mythal's blades of justice'. They were essentially her muscle during the height of the Elvhen empire. More colloquially they were called the 'Wolf Pack', seeing as Fen'Harel was their undisputed leader, and amongst the nobility they were generally held to be arrogant and wild, heeding only the commands of Mythal. Though they are no longer spirits, they remain very much the personification of the values they once embodied.

Eolas - Knowledge. Eolas was the first to follow Solas from the Fade and is loyal and steadfast. He is the one the others come to if they need to know details about anything, and he generally handles all the logistics.

Sileahilan, 'Lea' - Ingenuity. Solas' right hand and the most feared warrior of the Champion's. She was a darling of Elgar'nan's court, being beautiful, bold and possessing a sharp wit.

Darasil, 'Dara' - Cunning. Lea's soul twin, her dark shadow. Arguably equal to Lea in terms of skill, but he was more dour and private, and had nothing but disdain for his contemporaries. Where she was bright and charming, he was always content to lurk unseen.

Enastarin, 'Rin' - Vanity. Naturally, the most beautiful of the Champion's and an uncannily gifted shapeshifter, being able to perceive and reflect the true nature of any living creature. He is deeply envious of Solas, and has always resented the fact that Mythal favoured Solas over all others.

Avanathe, 'Ava' - Curiosity. The youngest of the Fade-born Champion's, she was often reckless in the pursuit of their goals. She was captured and slain by Anaris toward the end of the war between the Evanuris and the Forgotten Ones. Her spirit returned to the Fade where it eventually reformed as dual spirits - Studious Curiosity and Childlike Curiosity.

Vanarodha, 'Vana' - Audacity. Unlike the other Champion's, Vana was not a spirit that once resided in the Fade. She was born of the people, belonging to a clan pledged in fealty to Falon'Din. When she learned that she had been chosen for the dubious honour of serving Falon'Din directly, the spirits of the forest she had befriended, urged her to seek the aid of Fen'Harel - whom they held in high regard. Impressed by her boldness and her unusual affinity for spirits, Fen'Harel snatched her from Falon'Din's domain and brought her under the protection of Mythal, where she was renamed Vanarodha.

Ok I'll leave here some things about my Wardens because posting them separately makes me forget about them

Brianna Tabris 🗡️

Her favorite food is chocolate, something very hard to find when living in Alienage.

Even though she looks like a serious woman, Brianna and Alistair share the same brain cell.

While in public, Brianna likes to whisper some dirty things to Zevran and just for him to listen, not that he minds doing something there in front of everyone, but playing around a little never killed anyone.

Brianna still has her wedding ring, even after all this time…

Elisa Cousland ⚔️

She named her dog after Knight Aveline (Lady Aveline), who was a person who inspired Elisa a lot in her training and dreams.

Meeting Alistair was almost as if a small light appeared in her life again, he is radiant and content, something she never thought she would find again…

She wants kids with Alistair, but she's afraid to ask, afraid he'll think that's all she's with him for.

A secret skill is that Elisa can draw, she used to paint pictures before the terrible attack on her house.

Vidalenos has an absurd passion for Hallas, he simply loves everything about them and even many times in the woods he did not hesitate to kill humans who tried to hunt Hallas.

Morrigan's personality amuses him, knowing that she doesn't lower her head to anyone, not even people who can clearly hurt her. Vidalenos has great respect and admiration for his beloved

Vidalenos is a reserved man and often a little shy, he has a small gift he made for Morrigan, but never gave it to her because of his own silly pride.

Elaya Mahariel 🏹

She has always worked hard in her clan to show that she deserved to be a Keeper and even if others there don't agree with that, she doesn't care, her mission is to guide the younger ones and help the clan, and not give any kind of satisfaction to those who do not accept her position

What does Elaya think about Sten? Well… He's big, quiet and listens well, a man of few words who still seems to talk too much. They have their own way of relating.

Searching for a bastard named Loghain and being forced to do it with a bunch of teenagers, an old woman, an alcoholic dwarf and a grumpy Qunari was something that really increased her stress level.

Nothing can compare to how proud she was when she found out that her niece simply saved the world, Elaya wanted so badly to be there by her side, but now she has things on her mind that can't be left out…

behold, my newest dragon age oc

Brianna Cousland | grey warden

A bit of a quicker thing, but I wanted to do a side by side of my Warden, Natalie Cousland, Brianna Hawke and Inquisitor Elona Lavellan and their respective outfits.

Natalie just has a play off of warden armour and art floating around of the warden design, with a one shoulder cape. With Brianna I didn’t change anything- I legit love the Champion armour. Though in DA2 she wears her hair short and in DAI its in a side cut where one side is shaved. Natalie is the shortest and Brianna the tallest.

Elona’s outfit I have the most ideas with and thought put into it. Her post Trespasser look takes from Dalish and Ancient Elvhen outfits with the gold chest piece and leaf like designs and wraps. The pelt she wears is Mabari, given they where used to hunt wolves. And of course, no longer wearing the Sylaise vallaslin. She does, still wear the gloves she did as Inquisitor though.

Summary: Nathaniel returns to Vigil's Keep after a week of hunting Darkspawn in the Wending Woods. He longs to have Brianna all to himself, but understands when duty conspires to keep them apart a while longer.

What he will not abide however, is an old friend of Brianna's coming between them. Rating: Explicit Pairing: Nathaniel Howe/Brianna Cousland Word Count: 14150

Preview:

As they break clear of the woods, the spires of Vigil’s Keep come into view, jutting proudly on the horizon. Nathaniel’s horse jigs excitedly beneath him, sensing his eagerness at the sight of home.

“Guess I’m not the only one hungry for a proper meal and warm bed,” Anders grumbles at his side and Nathaniel chuckles. He pats the animal on the neck, soothing it as he tries to rein in his own excitement. A wry smirk curves one side of his mouth when he considers that a decade ago, the sight of those spires would have filled him with a cold, miserable dread.

Now however, his heart is full of warmth - his mind pre-occupied with thoughts of Brianna. Their nights together still brim with passion, but it is the quiet, mundane moments he finds he misses most. The casual, affectionate touches they sneak when quietly at work in her office, or passing each other by in the hallways. Ofttimes, the business of the Arling has her rousing early and he always rolls into her warm, abandoned crease in his bed - inhaling the lingering scent of her on the pillow.

At mealtimes and when amongst company, he thrills at the meaningful glances they silently exchange. His favourite however, is the heated longing in Brianna’s expression, when she happens to catch him shirtless out on the training yard. That, or the murderous glare she fixes on the tittering serving girls that tend to gather whenever he and Anders have a bout.

Nathaniel bites his lip to tame his broad grin, mindful of the presence of his squad. He and Brianna were still attempting to maintain the pretence that their relationship was purely professional; at least until the rumours about their behaviour at the Landsmeet hit Amaranthine. Nathaniel does not expect anyone at Vigil’s Keep to be particularly scandalised by the revelation. Either they were thoroughly dense individuals, or they were politely pretending they had failed to noticed the change in Nathaniel and Brianna’s manners toward one another. Nathaniel suspects the latter, although perhaps in Oghren’s case, the dwarf really is that obtuse.

As they trot up the cobblestone road leading to the main gates, a small party emerges from the Keep; Brianna’s burnished, bronze locks gleaming like a beacon amongst the troupe. He suspects it is just ridiculous sentimentality - but after five days apart, he feels she has never looked more beautiful to him than in this moment. Standing proudly in command; her easy smile flashing in the sunlight, as she radiates an heroic aura in her Warden armour.

Summary: Brianna Cousland and Nathaniel Howe, once friends, now rivals. Not that Brianna wants it to be so and she tries everything she can think of to win Nathaniel over, to little avail. She has tried so hard to be patient and understanding of the shock that Nathaniel has suffered, but even she has her limits. A gentle rap against her open door signals Nathaniel’s arrival. Brianna looks up from her work, motioning that he should close the office door behind him.

He does so and approaches her desk. “How was your trip to Denerim?” he asks, standing at ease, but not taking a seat unless she offers it.

“Exhausting. I feel like an exotic bird that Anora trots out once in a while, to be gawked at by the masses.” Brianna sighs and pushes out of her chair, turning toward the rectangular crate behind her desk.

“Everyone wants to see the Hero of Ferelden,” Nathaniel returns with a hint of bitterness. Brianna chooses to ignore his scathing tone. Lately they’d managed to achieve a sort of truce. It was not entirely amiable - not as they used to be.

Her memories of a young Nathaniel were full of fondness and affection. Despite her constant flaunting of propriety as a girl - deep down, Brianna had always understood the duties and expectations placed upon her by her birthright. Very early on it occurred to her - barring some lucky turn of romantic fortune - if she had to be married to an Arl one day, she could do worse than Nathaniel Howe. At least they were friends and enjoyed one another’s company.

Or they had been, once upon a time. His bitter rage when they were reunited had shocked her. In all honesty, there would likely be no peace between them, if not for the great efforts she made to be patient and kind, despite Nathaniel’s open hostility.

“I’m not the one that stopped the archdemon,” she readily shifts the heroics onto Alistair.

“I’m sorry. I know you two were close,” Nathaniel mumbles and Brianna blinks in surprise. Perhaps they had made greater progress in mending their friendship than she first thought.

“After a fashion.” A wistful smile softens her face, even though the memories cause a pang of sorrow. “A bond of circumstance really, being the last two Wardens in Ferelden. If you could even call us Wardens - a pair of green recruits.” She scoffs at how ridiculous it all is. The people of Ferelden told stories and sang songs about their legendary adventures, little knowing how out of their depths they had been. “I never suspected the lengths Alistair would go to though, to avoid being crowned King,” she laughs and Nathaniel scowls at her. “What?”

“I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised at how quickly you got over him,” he grinds out with heated contempt.

“Got over him…” Brianna repeats dumbly, too perplexed to be offended. Maker… did he think that she and Alistair? Her palm connects loudly with her forehead. Of course he does. Even she had heard this particularly romantic re-imagining of her own life. The one in which the bastard son of King Maric, sacrifices himself to spare his lady love. Preposterous!

“Mother wrote to me regularly when I was in the Free Marches,” Nathaniel continues, before she can correct his error. “She often expressed her concerns about Thomas wanting to marry you, given the rumours about how quickly you let men in - and sent them out - of your bed.”

Summary: Brianna has cajoled Nathaniel into attending the Landsmeet with her. All part of his new duties as Warden-Constable she insists - though secretly he suspects she simply doesn’t wish to suffer alone. Until they reach the palace and he discovers just how much attention Brianna receives when she is in Denerim. Rating: Explicit Pairing: Nathaniel Howe/Brianna Cousland Word Count: 5600

Nathanial tugs at the sleeves of his doublet. The fit is no more snug than his armour would be, and yet it feels infinitely more restrictive.

Oppressive, he muses.

Beside him, Brianna senses his discomfort, “You look fine.” She brushes her hand down his back and across his stomach, scrutinising his clothes. She seems so at ease, touching him with such familiarity in public, but Nathaniel’s heart races at the contact. Satisfied, she pats his chest affectionately, gifting him a pleased smile.

“I never felt comfortable at these sorts of things,” Nathaniel confesses, pulling now at the collar that chokes him.

“You and me both,” Brianna replies, eyes scanning the room. She is searching for her brother, Fergus, amongst the throng of the Landsmeet.

“Tch, I don’t believe that for a minute,” Nathaniel grumbles with great skepticism. He slowly drinks in the Warden Commander - eyes roaming from her perfectly coiffed hair, down the bare curve of her neck and over the soft swell of her bosom - tantalisingly bordered by the sheer lace trim of her bodice.

It is the sole piece of embellishment on the otherwise austere - very Ferelden - gown she wears. Nathaniel suspects it was a political choice. Given that Orlesian’s now make up the majority of the Wardens stationed in Amaranthine, the Bannorn might have been anxious, had Brianna arrived decked in ruffles and frills like an Orlesian lady.

Nathaniel thinks it’s ridiculous, that so much weight is given to one’s garments. With one simple choice however, Brianna has affirmed her steadfast loyalty to Ferelden. He’s not convinced she even needed to bother, the way the Bann’s fall all over themselves, trying to court the Hero of Ferelden.

Some of them recognise him, sniffing at him in disdain. For the most part however, they only have eyes for Brianna. He is merely judged to be - at best, her fortunate lackey - and worst, an upstart interloper, by those with designs on Brianna and the Arling of Amaranthine.

The latter flirt shamelessly with her, and Nathaniel’s resentment grows with each passing moment. Not once does Brianna reject them outright, or bother to inform them that her lover just happens to be standing beside her. She playfully accuses them of being incorrigible flatterers and sends them away with the sincere belief that they have a chance.

It is irrational, he knows. They had both agreed to keep their intimacy under wraps, especially considering she had just granted him a huge promotion.

“For your sake,” Brianna had insisted, “I don’t want anyone questioning the validity of your position.”

Even so, she could have some sensitivity for his feelings. She doesn’t need to announce their relationship to the world, in order to reject the advances of would-be suitors.

Brave Ser Gilmore

“Ugh, giant rats. It’s like the start of every adventure tale my grandfather used to tell,” Rory groans, as he wipes the blood from his sword. Brianna laughs at the look of disgust painted over his handsome features.

“So sorry, I’ll tell Cook to let dragons infest the larder instead.” She slides her own blades back into their scabbards.

“I’d happily take a dragon over rats,” Rory mutters, a shudder running through him. Brianna stills, her eyes flaring wide as she studies him.

“No…” she murmurs in disbelief. “Is the brave Ser Gilmore afraid of rats?” He bristles at her words, drawing himself up to his full height and awkwardly shifting on his feet.

“Not afraid as such,” he protests, face flushing with embarrassment. Brianna doubles over with mirth and he scowls at her. “They’re revolting!” Rory insists and Brianna straightens.

“Sorry… I’m sorry,” she breathlessly stammers. She covers her mouth with her hand, attempting to stifle the laughter that keeps bubbling out of her. Rory turns his face away from her, shoulders slumping. “Awww…” Brianna coos gently, his hang-dog expression sobering her immediately. She strides to his side and taking the cloth rag from his hands, she uses it to clear a fleck of blood from his jaw. Rather petulantly, he refuses to acknowledge her and Brianna brushes her hand over his cheek, turning his face toward her.

“Thank you. For saving me from those filthy beasts,” Brianna remarks and Rory rolls his eyes.

“Please,” he scoffs. “You would have managed quite well without me.”
