Wexford’s 'Moving On': A Poignant Prelude to 'Silent Key' The last single from the Sandusky-based band Wexford is released and it is called “Moving On. ” The band’s full album entitled “Silent Key” will be out by late summer. As one of the most prominent bands of the punk, post-hardcore, and alternative genres, the Wexford captures the message of this track in its deeply emotional style. The meanings of the piece ‘Moving On’ encompass new change, strength and the processes that are involved in transition after overcoming challenges. The introspective topic and tempo of the track lets listeners consider their own processes of overcoming obstacles and obtaining growth from hardships. Being a ballad, “Moving On” brings out the best in lyrics and music so relevant to Wexford’s culture. The band composed of Dave Mueller, the vocalist and guitarist, Andy Kohlmann the vocalist and guitarist, bass guitarist, Shawn Daley and Jeff Vandebussche on drums, gives a great performance. They have energetic rhythmic base, intricate guitar and powerful vocals with strong emotion behind them. The single is by Shawn Patrick Thomas Daley and it is recorded in The Mohawk Studio in Sandusky OH and mastered by Brian Lucey the engineer of Black Keys, Green Day. [caption id="attachment_56141" align="alignnone" width="2000"] Wexford has this vintage appeal, but its sound is new and unique[/caption] The official video for “Moving On” which was recorded and directed by Brad Walton of Cineres Creative Productions supplements the storyline depicted in the song with visual accompaniment. The artwork of the single is emblematic, designed by Sean Carrol of Sandusky Bay Poster Works in an effective manner to support the themes of the song. Some of the rock and punk bands that have inspired Wexford include Hot Water Music, Fugazi, Hum, Rival Schools, Quicksand, and Dinosaur Jr. Consequently, Wexford has this vintage appeal, but its sound is new and unique. Considering that “Moving On” immediately precedes “Silent Key,” it can only foreshadow that the rest of the album will offer meaningful and inspiring compositions. Middle School Monday: SCRAM: Society of Creatures Real and Magical by Rory Lucey
Jenny, Emiko, and Brian are friends, future authors, and members of a group called S.C.R.A.M. (Society of Creatures Real and Magical). We spend most of the book with Jenny, the founder of S.C.R.A.M. and the biggest fan of magical creatures. We see her at the library trying to learn more about magical creatures, and wondering if there’s more information she could find that she could include in her own book. When she joins with Emiko and Brian to try to find a troll, it’s just the beginning of their fun adventure.
This story is silly, cute, and sweet, but it also has a lot of heart. Give this graphic novel to older kids and younger teens who enjoy entertaining stories about magical journeys!

Based in Boston, U.S.A, Munk Duane who is an admired recording artist and film composer, has just dropped his emotionally resonant song “We've Talked About This Before” along with AWAL (Sony Music). Famous for everything he could do, Duane did more than write and perform the song, he was also the producer of it. The mastering was done flawlessly by Brian Lucey at Magic Garden Mastering in Los Angeles who has worked on Grammy® winning releases for The Black Keys and Lizzo, as well as the soundtrack for the best picture "The Greatest Showman". Duane's musical journey has been marked by significant achievements, including the release of three impactful singles: "Just A Word," "My Fellow Americans," and "Myths," these are songs that carry a message, a meaning and are thought-provoking. His own R&B mixed with deep meaningful lyrics and rhythms grooves out this artist's rich, artistic content. His tunes reached a higher mountain after placing three tracks from his music collection in the movie “The Getback” in which Theo Rossi, Kim Coates, Dermot Mulroney, and Anthony "Treach" Criss were the movie’s main actors. One noteworthy moment was his song “Myths” which stood out as an interpretation of Rossi’s main character and raised Duane in the corridors of the music industry. "We've Talked About This Before" is a difficult one that addresses the intricate world of dealing with ageing relatives. The song poetically suggests the theme of empathy and sympathy through the repetitive talks about the same topic. Duane uses this imagery of a "needle skipping on your favourite song" to describe these encounters. Still, it appears more like he is urging everyone to live in the moment, enjoying the present with the awareness that it will all end someday. Issue 1 - Bird and Byron
From their new home in Nashville, Bird and Byron bring along a unique blend of soul and rock music, creating a discography full of undeniably infectious songs. Making their debut as a group in 2020 with their first release, The Boy is a Storm, Bird and Byron tested their chemistry through shared influences of The Black Keys and blues music. With lead singer Blake Bergeres developing a unique vocal style and guitarists Nick Lorenz bringing in new and obscure music to the group, the duo has been able to dig into the stylings of soul, gospel, and emotional folk rock with their sound. In January, Bird and Byron released their first ep, How Love Grows, followed by a six-show tour along the southern U.S. I was able to catch up with them in Austin during their last show of the tour to discuss how the project came together.
_____________________________________________________________
“It’s not me writing all the vocal parts, we’re building these tracks together.”
In the back of a dimly lit Empire Garage & Control Room venue, Nick and Blake introduced us to the band members supporting them on stage as we make our way to a standing table. Blake, wearing a tucked-in RHCP shirt, explains to us the process behind making their EP.
Blake: How Love Grows is entirely written, produced, mixed, and mastered ourselves, except for the song Lessons Of Love, which was mastered by Brian Lucey from Magic Garden Master. In terms of differences between what we’ve done before was that it was a labor of love, because we had every connection to the creative process in each of these songs. We wanted to keep control of it because that’s where the fun is.
_____________________________________________________________
In anticipation of the debut of How Love Grows, Bird and Byron released five singles in what they called their "45" series, which was "an initial documentation of our first releases in our new home of Nashville.” Accompanied by a different colored sleeve of a 45’ record, each single contained a new stamp alongside the ones found on the previous covers. When asked if there was any significance behind the stamps on the singles, the eyes of both Blake and Nick lit up with surprise as they explained to us how the stamps came to be.
Blake: Nicks girlfriend does the art work, she’s incredible. We’d have these songs written and we’d go to her and she’d devise something that would embody the song and it’d be a stamp on the vinyl.
_____________________________________________________________
With the Pandemic in place during the start of the band's career, dreams of touring were put on hold for Bird and Byron as they turned their attention toward their music. Now, In support of The Criticals, Bird and Byron were able to go on their first-ever tour, playing shows in Mississippi, The Carolinas, and Texas. From videos shown in their stories, the reaction from the crowds was found to be exhilarating. The energy at the shows seemed to be in a continuous exchange between the band and the crowd.
_____________________________________________________________
In asking how the band felt about the audience reception so far, I was surprised to hear that a majority of the concert goers didn’t know who Bird and Byron were.
Nick: We knows that there’s been a good amount of people that haven’t heard us that come to these shows, and I feel like we’ve been doing a good job showing them who we are and the music that we really want to inspire people with.
Blake: You’ll see tonight, we’ll get the crowd going and a lot of these people really won’t know who we are. I bet you like 80% of this crowd won’t know who we are, so when they get moving, you’ll see.
And that they did. With Nick wearing his pair of black sunglasses, and Blake wearing a white, Elvis inspired, t-shirt with the word “BIRD” sewn to the back (as seen on the back cover,) Bird and Byron got the crowd into a dancing frenzy.
_____________________________________________________________
“We’re just happy the music’s connecting. This is kinda like the reward for it”
As the tour comes to a close with their last show in Austin, Bird and Byron are hopeful for the future as they begin a new chapter in their careers. In discussing any plans for a future project, the group lets us know that an album may just be around the corner.
Nick: We both have day jobs, but every minute of every hour outside of it we dedicate to the music.
Bird: We’re in album mode right now, its been like 4-5 hours a day. Most of the songs are already written, and now it’s just like finishing them. They all feel really cool and they all feel like us. We’ll play one of the songs tonight, Its looking like it might be around summertime.
_____________________________________________________________
With anticipation for a future release growing as Bird and Byron hint at the possibility through their Instagram, this band is one to keep your ears out for. With a discography of infectious songs, a commanding presence on stage, and artistry that is both refined as it is their own, we’re both excited to hear more of what Bird and Byron have to offer.

Goodnight Sunrise Get Merry with "Single All The Way"
Tumblr media
Toronto rock band, Goodnight Sunrise, was founded by Vanessa Vakharia (keytar, vocals) and David Kochberg (guitar, vocals) through a shared love of pop hooks and the raw power of classic rock. Since 2011, the band have taken their explosive live show to over 300 audiences across Canada, the US, and Europe, opening up for Bon Jovi, Big Wreck, and The Sheepdogs along the way.
“Single All The Way” offers a unique perspective to the holiday season. Their original Christmas song goes full pop-punk, with a hint of holiday in the sleigh bells as percussion and some light festive-sounding samples. Inspired by romcoms, the doorbell at the end of the bridge and the sound of a plane taking off are an ode to Love Actually. Instead of believing that the only way to be happy during the holidays is to be in love, “Single All The Way” celebrates the joys of being single at Christmas. Their dynamic third full-length album, Against All Odds, was released last month with a poignant mantra for the band and listeners – hard times come and go, but persistence and resilience can pay off when you believe in something deeply, including yourself. Produced by Brian Moncarz (Alice Cooper, Circa Survive), mastered by Brian Lucey (Green Day, Arctic Monkeys) and recorded with bassist Duncan Coutts and drummer Jason Pierce of Our Lady Peace.

The future of cryptocurrency: How do environmental consequences compare with the convenience of digital currency?
Tumblr media
Current climate change status and CO2 levels:
In 2022, there was more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than at any other time in the last 800,000 years at 417.2 ppm (parts per million)
The mean global temperature is estimated to be 1.15 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial age average
What is cryptocurrency and what is its allure?
Cryptocurrency is digital currency that gives the user independence from standard financial banking assets like stocks and bonds and allows them to diversify their investment portfolio.  Encryption algorithms are used to create it and allow for it to be used as both a currency and a virtual accounting system. Using a system called blockchain, bitcoins are “mined” using elaborate math problems and huge, costly computers that use massive amounts of computing power.  Bitcoin miners need to solve these complex algorithms to add a block to the blockchain and thus gain bitcoin. This process inevitably leads to an increase in the network and the process is then repeated.
The key factors that make cryptocurrency attractive:
Faster transaction speed - money transfers within minutes as opposed to hours or even days with standard banking
Lower transaction costs than the standard banking system
Better accessibility - all you need is a smart phone or computer and internet connection
Security - cannot access wallet without private key, protected by the blockchain system
Privacy - no registration at a financial institution necessary and the transactions are all pseudonyms which means that every transaction is anonymous
Transparency - all transactions happen on the publicly distributed blockchain ledger which allows for anyone to see how much currency you have in your wallet
Diversification - investors diversify their financial assets
Tumblr media
The Environmental Impact of Cryptocurrency
“Bitcoin alone consumes as much electricity as a medium-sized European country,” says Professor Brian Lucey at Trinity College Dublin. “This is a stunning amount of electricity. It’s a dirty business. It’s a dirty currency.” (Katie Martin in London and Billy Nauman in New York MAY 19th, 2021)
Since 2016, big banks have given $2.7 trillion into fossil fuels, so by no means is the big banking system preferable to cryptocurrency. The argument here is that when we are already in a global environmental crisis, why add another currency that continues to contribute to the problem? Even with all of the alluring factors of digital currency that were previously mentioned, is it truly necessary to use this relatively new form of currency?
Tumblr media
5 Main Points:
1) How does cryptocurrency impact our environment?
Though transactions made through cryptocurrency hold an appeal of convenience and relative security, great environmental ramifications lie in those transactions– namely, through bitcoin “mining,” a vital step in the transaction process. As established earlier, bitcoin mining involves exhaustive use of hardware and energy to compute complicated algorithms to mine. As cryptocurrency booms in popularity, competition heightens, and not only are more miners mining for a smaller likelihood of reward but also, their efforts in mining contribute to cryptocurrency’s environmental ramifications.
Crypto-Mining’s Effects on the Environment:
Electronic waste (e-waste): E-waste consists of discarded pieces of hardware that can no longer be used as they are–very seldomly being recycled and repurposed. A 2019 UN report details that, “Less than 20% of e-waste is formally recycled, with 80% either ending up in landfill or being informally recycled… exposing workers to hazardous and carcinogenic substances such as mercury, lead and cadmium. E-waste in landfill contaminates soil and groundwater, putting food supply systems and water sources at risk,” (UN 2019). Therefore, we can assume that the effects of e-waste are generally negative, as it contributes to pollution and poses public health threats. Digiconomist, a platform devoted to revealing the economic ramifications of new developments in the growing tech age, conducted a study to track and approximate the kilotons per year of e-waste produced in America. The study predicts that as of December 4th, 2022, America has produced an annual 39.99 kilotons of e-waste per year. Again, let’s recall that only twenty percent of that is being recycled, whereas the rest will find themselves aggravating environmental concerns.
Carbon Emissions: The White House published an article titled “FACT SHEET: Climate and Energy Implications of Crypto-Assets in the United States” on September eighth of this year, emphasizing the role of crypto-assets in impacting the environment: “Global electricity generation for the crypto-assets with the largest market capitalizations resulted in a combined 140 ± 30 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year (Mt CO2/y), or about 0.3% of global annual greenhouse gas emissions,” while “Crypto-asset activity in the United States is estimated to result in approximately 25 to 50 Mt CO2/y, which is 0.4% to 0.8% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. This range of emissions is similar to emissions from diesel fuel used in railroads in the United States” (White House 2022).
Tumblr media
The greenhouse effect of carbon emissions within Earth’s atmosphere has been a hotly debated and increasingly talked about topic as day by day, emissions pose a greater threat to climate change. And crypto, though it may appear as a helpful and harmless way to conduct online trade, contributes greatly to emissions– and by emphasizing the modern size of the impact that cryptocurrency has in concurrence with diesel fuel emissions on American railroads, the White House highlights how cryptocurrency has become the equivalent of an industry running solely on gas fuel, and emitting carbon in the process. If these are facts now, the future, as users fail to acknowledge how powerful even a bitcoin-mining piece of computer hardware can be in furthering the environmental crisis, looks grim.
Local impact: In essence, cryptocurrency poses significant threats to environmental well-being: Besides purchased grid electricity, crypto-asset mining operations can also cause local noise and water impacts, electronic waste, air and other pollution from any direct usage of fossil-fired electricity, and additional air, water, and waste impacts associated with all grid electricity usage. These local impacts can exacerbate environmental justice issues for neighboring communities, which are often already burdened with other pollutants of heat, traffic, or noise. The growth of energy-intensive crypto-asset technologies, when not directly using clean electricity, could hinder the ability of the United States to achieve its National Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement, and to avoid the most severe impacts of climate change. Broader adoption of crypto-assets, and the potential introduction of new types of digital assets require action by the federal government to encourage and ensure responsible development. This includes minimizing negative impacts on local communities, significantly reducing energy intensity, and powering with clean electricity.
Tumblr media
2) Which crypto companies create the most environmental impact and how?
Bitcoin is the most well-known crypto company and for good reason– its name has graced news headlines as the company booms and busts. As explored by CNBC, the company has over quadrupled its stock value in the year 2020 (CNBC 2021) and would continue to nearly double in value by the start of 2022 (TIME 2022). But beyond expanding the company and the industry of cryptocurrency, Bitcoin has also served to broaden its audience of users who contribute to the company’s rising carbon footprint and energy use.
Margaret Obsborne, writing for the Smithsonian Magazine, recorded that “carbon emissions for mining a single bitcoin rose from 0.9 tons in 2016 to 113 tons in 2021—a 126-fold increase. The industry’s annual carbon footprint is comparable to Greece’s, per Digiconomist and in 2020, Bitcoin used 75.4 terawatt hours of electricity—more than Austria (69.9) or Portugal (48.4)” (Osborne 2022). The numbers speak for themselves– Bitcoin’s environmentally harmful effects are on their own equivalent and at times greater than the effects of entire nations.
But beyond Bitcoin, companies such as Ethereum and Cardano have taken steps to improve their environmental impact. Ethereum’s actions are expanded upon in Nathan Reiff’s article titled “What's the Environmental Impact of Cryptocurrency?”: “Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency network, was estimated to use 62.77 Terawatt-hours of electricity per year, based on energy consumption through July 9, 2022. The average Ethereum transaction required 163 kilowatt-hours of electricity. However, since Ethereum rolled out its proof of work upgrade in September 2022, electrical energy requirements have dropped to 0.01 TWh per year, with one transaction using 0.03 kWh.” Given these new improvements in regulating electricity expenditure, there seems to be hope for the future of cryptocurrency– however, Ethereum went bankrupt just last year. Cardano, on the other hand, maintains its place in the world of cryptocurrency. In an article written by Dominic Basulto, Basulto asserts that “In contrast to Bitcoin… Cardano [uses] proof of stake, in which users pledge their coins for the right to validate transactions and earn more coins. And that makes all the difference. Because Cardano does not rely on energy-intensive mining that uses thousands of powerful computers, that immediately reduces its carbon footprint. In fact, some Cardano backers say that it is now 37,500 times more energy efficient than Bitcoin” (Basulto 2022). However, even with companies taking efforts to halt environmental harm, as evidenced by Bitcoin, it’s unlikely that all will take such efforts. But cryptocurrency transactions are not without incentives, and as the industry grows, environmentalists look towards legislators and judges to enact governmental action.
3) How can these top polluting companies be regulated?
Cryptocurrency is not regulated by the government, however, as one author for New York University's Dispatch writes, “The number one way that the government could regulate cryptocurrencies is by taxing any fiat money you use to cash out a virtual token,” and that “cryptocurrencies fall under the jurisdiction of the SEC for investment, the CTFC for any crimes involving interstate commerce, and the IRS, making it subject to either income or a capital gains tax” (NYU Dispatch 2022). However, beyond those expectations, the government doesn't have the authority to regulate cryptocurrencies closely, much less their actions involving the environment. Research has been conducted on whether Congress’ Constitutional power of the Commerce Clause (combined with other legal factors), which allows Congress to regulate all forms of interstate commerce, would pave the path for government regulation on cryptocurrency. However, currently such an issue has yet to take the stage in political debates before reaching the Congress floor.
4) Do the benefits of crypto outweigh the cost it has on the environment?
Though cryptocurrency opens the door to faster, cheaper, and potentially more secure transactions, the long-term effects bitcoin mining has on the environment trump such benefits. Sure, the world is transitioning and becoming ever-reliant on technology, however, the sacrifice of Earth’s environment cannot outweigh a desire to keep up to speed and advance into the tech-filled future. After all– we may be given multiple chances to develop the world of transactions and find innovative solutions to reduce the impact cryptocurrency has on the environment, however, we only get one Earth– an Earth which cryptocurrency works increasingly more actively to destroy.
Tumblr media
5) How can we find a compromise between the two?
Yet despite how high the stakes may seem; compromise is not impossible– we can find a balance between reaping the benefits of cryptocurrency whilst limiting its pitfalls. One can look to environmentally-friendly cryptocurrency companies such as Ethereum and Cardano to set a precedent for how companies ought to regulate energy expenditure within themselves, and furthermore, with the power of the Commerce Clause, voters can look to their representatives to potentially exercise this legislative power to regulate interstate commerce to enforce restrictions on cryptocurrency companies, and mandate that they comply with certain environmental-forward solutions and standards.
Conclusion:
In our current environmental crisis, is it so important for us as humans to create a new currency that is so harmful to the environment? Shouldn’t we be focusing our energy and using our money to build a better world for our future generations and the ones that are alive now? Could there be a less harmful way to be independent of the big banking system? So, if we ask ourselves, how do environmental consequences compare with the convenience of digital currency? We should all take a close look at the data and statistics surrounding the impacts of this digital currency and prioritize our environment over self-interest and greed. Shouldn’t the comfort level of the environment in which we live and life as we know it on this Earth as humans be in our self-interest? We need to start making decisive and well-informed decisions about how to change the trajectory of this self-destructive path we are on as humans. A serious re-evaluation of our priorities is vital for making any positive and effective changes in our current environmental crisis, and even then, it may be too late.
