Film Review - Earth to Echo

Been a while since I’ve posted on this blog! Took a stab at writing my first film review today. 

Released - July 2014

Director - Dave Green

Producers - Ryan Kavanaugh / Andrew Panay

Genre - Sci-Fi

Dave Green’s found footage filled directorial debut draws influence from the great 1980s blockbusters and maintains a similarity to Spielberg’s 2011 sci-fi-horror flick, Super 8. Set in Nevada the story revolves around three friends who, in the midst of trying to save their neighbourhood from being demolished due to highway construction, discover an alien in the desert.

The found footage perspective used for the majority of the film creates an engaging atmosphere that, for the most part, makes up for a storyline that could easily been looked at as a rehashed ET. Teo Halm, Reese Hartwig and Brian ‘Astro’ Bradley all deliver strong performances as Alex, Munch and Tucker respectively. While, Ella Wahlestedt introduces a new dynamic to the group as the seemingly fearless Emma.

The films truly enticing factor comes in the kids journey and determined enthusiasm to reach their goals, however, the eventual climax lacks in impact. Echo’s ship coming together and driving the alien home just doesn’t quite match up to ET and Elliot’s famous goodbye or The Goonies’ first discovering One-Eyed Willys ship.

Overall, the story does have a tendency to feel drawn out in places and ultimately the ending, while satisfying, is nothing too memorable. Despite it’s pitfalls, Earth to Echo still has enough charm to keep viewers interested and will undoubtedly be a very enjoyable watch for it’s young target audience.

Algee Smith (The New Edition Story) and Austin Abrams (The Walking Dead) have joined the cast of Euphoria, HBO’s teen drama starring Zendaya and written by The Wizard of Lies scribe Sam Levinson, with Drake and Future the Prince executive producing.

In a recasting, Smith will play McKay, believed to be a series regular role. He replaces Brian “Astro” Bradley, who played the part in the pilot. Abrams will portray Ethan.

Euphoria, based on the Israeli series from HOT, follows a group of high school students as they navigate drugs, sex, identity, trauma, social media, love and friendship. Zendaya leads the cast that also includes Storm Reid, Maude Apatow, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Jacob Elordi, Barbie Ferreira, Nika King, Hunter Schafer and Sydney Sweeney.

Divulgada a lista de indicados ao Globo de Ouro 2019

A 76ª edição do Annual Golden Globe Awards divulgou sua lista de indicados da premiação deste ano. Cada uma das 25 categorias conta com 5 indicados e os anunciantes dos títulos que concorrerão foram anunciados por quatro celebridades nesta quinta-feira (6): Terry Crews, Danai Gurira, Leslie Mann e Christian Slater.

Vice, filme de Adam McKay, liderou as indicações, abocanhando seis, enquanto que A favorita, Green Book: O Guia e Nasce uma Estrela empataram com cinco nomeações cada um. Muitos astros, alguns que já inclusive levaram estatuetas para casa, competem este ano pelos prêmios de melhor atriz ou ator em diferentes categorias, dentre eles: Emma Stona, Lady Gaga, Rachel Weisz, Mahershala Ali, Viggo Mortensen e Bradley Cooper.

Um dos destaques é para o primeiro filme de super-herói da Marvel Studios que foi indicado a melhor filme dramático, sendo este Pantera Negra. O longa também concorre na categoria de melhor música para filme. E na disputa pela melhor animação, Homem-Aranha no Aranhaverso também está concorrendo.

This is each club's biggest offseason need

Now that the World Series has concluded, the Hot Stove will be ignited when more than 100 players hit the free-agent market. The biggest headlines will center around Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, but only two teams (or maybe one if all this "The Phillies can actually get both of them!" talk is for real) will be fitting those superstars for uniforms.

But the coming weeks and months will be an opportunity for all 30 teams to make themselves better for the 2019 season, whether they're swimming in the deep end of the free-agent pool or wading in the shallow end. The beauty of free agency is that there are all types of players available depending on what a team's needs are.

With that in mind, here's a look at each team's biggest need as they embark on another interesting offseason.

American League East

Blue Jays: Starting pitching Toronto starters ranked 28th in the Majors with a 5.14 ERA, and although prospects Thomas Pannone and Sean Reid-Foley could get a look in the No. 5 spot, the Blue Jays figure to add at least one starter from outside the organization this offseason. Potential FA targets: Wade Miley, Derek Holland, Jeremy Hellickson

Orioles: Starting pitching Orioles starters posted a 5.48 ERA last season, the worst in MLB. Although Baltimore figures to be in the beginning stages of a rebuilding process, the Orioles will still need to send a starter to the mound every five days. Dylan Bundy, Alex Cobb and Andrew Cashner will occupy the first three spots, leaving two holes in the rotation. And that's assuming none of them are traded, which is a bold assumption. Potential FA targets: Hellickson, Holland, Jaime Garcia

Rays: Versatile arms Given Tampa Bay's frequent use of an "opener" rather than a traditional starter, what would be surprising this offseason would be for the Rays to go out and spend money on traditional starters, especially with prospects Brent Honeywell, Jose De Leon and Anthony Banda all slated to return from elbow surgery by the second half of the 2019 season. Potential FA targets: Bud Norris, David Phelps, Adam Warren

Red Sox: Closer Craig Kimbrel is a free agent, though his asking price might be higher than president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is willing to pay given the arbitration raises due to Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr., among others. Potential FA targets: Kimbrel, Zach Britton, David Robertson

Yankees: Starting pitching The Yankees are believed to be enamored with Patrick Corbin, who ranks as the No. 1 free-agent starter on the market (unless Clayton Kershaw opts out, of course). The Yankees could bring back free agents J.A. Happ and/or CC Sabathia. A trade for a controllable starter also remains in play. Potential FA targets: Corbin, Happ, Dallas Keuchel

AL Central

Indians: Outfield The bullpen could be a priority given the free-agent status of both Andrew Miller and Cody Allen, but with Michael Brantley also headed for the open market, the Indians will be on the lookout for his potential replacement. Potential FA targets: Andrew McCutchen, Adam Jones, Brett Gardner

Royals: Relief pitching The Royals' 5.04 bullpen ERA ranked 29th in MLB, ahead of only the Marlins. Considering that Kansas City's 2014-15 World Series teams were built largely on the strength of strong bullpens, it would make sense for general manager Dayton Moore to bolster his relief corps, rather than spending on starters. Potential FA targets: Cody Allen, Joe Kelly, Justin Wilson

Tigers: Starting pitching Detroit needs a new shortstop and possibly another outfielder, but adding a starting pitcher or two would appear to be the Tigers' most glaring need. Just as they did last offseason with Mike Fiers and Francisco Liriano, the Tigers could target rebound candidates. Potential FA targets: Clay Buchholz, Lance Lynn, Marco Estrada

Twins: Relief pitching Say this much for the Twins: Their pitching staff was consistent in 2018. Minnesota's rotation ranked 22nd in the Majors with a 4.54 ERA, while its bullpen ranked 22nd with a 4.45 ERA. After trading Ryan Pressly and Fernando Rodney, the bullpen needs a makeover, so expect the Twins to be active on that front. Potential FA targets: Allen, Jeurys Familia, Kelvin Herrera

White Sox: Pitching Chicago could be a year away from really making a splash on the free-agent market, though it's possible GM Rick Hahn takes a run at a big-ticket item such as Machado. Série Euphoria choca com cenas fortes e drogas envolvendo adolescentes e conselho de pais pede cancelamento

Estreou no último domingo (16) uma das produções mais aguardadas pelo público norte-americano: Euphoria. E a nova série da HBO já chegou causando enorme polêmica no país.

Seguindo o padrão de ousadia e realismo do canal, Euphoria “pesou a mão” nas cenas de sexo, nudez e consumo de drogas, e tudo isso envolvendo personagens adolescentes, que são o foco da produção. A descrição da série conta que a trama acompanha “um grupo de estudantes do ensino médio enquanto eles navegam em amor e amizades em um mundo de drogas, sexo, trauma e mídias sociais”.

E é justamente isso que vem dando o que falar nos Estados Unidos. Antes mesmo da estreia da série, o Conselho Parental de Televisão dos Estados Unidos, grupo de vigilância da mídia, solicitou que a produção sequer fosse ao ar, e agora pede o seu cancelamento.

Apesar da HBO alertar que Euphoria é voltada para adultos, os pais se preocupam com o fato de que grande parte do público da série é adolescente. “HBO, com seu novo programa centrado no ensino médio Euphoria, parece estar publicamente, intencionalmente comercializando conteúdo adulto extremamente gráfico — sexo, violência, profanação e uso de drogas — aos adolescentes e pré-adolescentes”, declarou o presidente do conselho, Tim Winter, em entrevista à Fox News.

O líder do grupo ainda conta que, apesar do canal informar que a série é para o público adulto, esse conceito “foi totalmente refutado porque [Sam Levinson, criador de Euphoria] disse que ‘os pais vão pirar com esse programa’. Essa é uma demonstração de quem ele está mirando com essa série. A HBO agora está comercializando internacionalmente esse conteúdo para crianças”.

O conteúdo pesado da produção chegou a preocupar a própria protagonista da série, a famosa atriz e cantora Zendaya, que nas redes sociais, onde conta com mais de 56 milhões de seguidores, fez uma publicação em que alerta que Euphoria não é voltado para todos os públicos, e que os que decidirem acompanhar a produção, devem fazer isso com cautela.

No início deste mês, o site The Hollywood Reporter informou que o rapper e ator Brian ‘Astro’ Bradley chegou a abandonar a série após a gravação do piloto (primeiro episódio) de Euphoria por não concordar em participar de cenas mais pesadas da série, que promete exibir sequências com overdoses, estupro de um adolescente trans de 17 anos e até uma orgia explícita.

A produção de séries adolescentes que visam um maior realismo ao abordar determinados temas desse universo vêm se tornando, de fato, um dilema nos últimos anos. Um caso recente envolve a série 13 Reasons Why, da Netflix, que apesar de ser uma série voltada para adultos, é acompanhada, em sua maioria, por adolescentes e pré-adolescentes. A produção apresenta cenas de violência gráfica, incluindo um suicídio, algo que foi alvo de bastante críticas, e que chegou a gerar protestos de alguns grupos que alegavam que a trama, além de chocar com cenas desse gênero, poderia incentivar jovens ao suicídio.

As críticas fizeram a Netflix exibir um comunicado na abertura e encerramento dos episódios de 13 Reasons Why, alertando para as cenas mais violentas e com informativos sobre suicídio.

Now that the World Series has concluded, the Hot Stove will be ignited when more than 100 players hit the free-agent market. The biggest headlines will center around Manny Machado and Bryce Harper, but only two teams (or maybe one if all this "The Phillies can actually get both of them!" talk is for real) will be fitting those superstars for uniforms.

But the coming weeks and months will be an opportunity for all 30 teams to make themselves better for the 2019 season, whether they're swimming in the deep end of the free-agent pool or wading in the shallow end. The beauty of free agency is that there are all types of players available depending on what a team's needs are.

With that in mind, here's a look at each team's biggest need as they embark on another interesting offseason.

American League East

Blue Jays: Starting pitching Toronto starters ranked 28th in the Majors with a 5.14 ERA, and although prospects Thomas Pannone and Sean Reid-Foley could get a look in the No. 5 spot, the Blue Jays figure to add at least one starter from outside the organization this offseason. Potential FA targets: Wade Miley, Derek Holland, Jeremy Hellickson

Orioles: Starting pitching Orioles starters posted a 5.48 ERA last season, the worst in MLB. Although Baltimore figures to be in the beginning stages of a rebuilding process, the Orioles will still need to send a starter to the mound every five days. Dylan Bundy, Alex Cobb and Andrew Cashner will occupy the first three spots, leaving two holes in the rotation. And that's assuming none of them are traded, which is a bold assumption. Rays: Versatile arms Given Tampa Bay's frequent use of an "opener" rather than a traditional starter, what would be surprising this offseason would be for the Rays to go out and spend money on traditional starters, especially with prospects Brent Honeywell, Jose De Leon and Anthony Banda all slated to return from elbow surgery by the second half of the 2019 season. Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for an indie time travel comedy titled See You Yesterday, produced by Spike Lee, and directed by Stefon Bristol making his feature directorial debut.
