The most popular lifesaving poems
The most popular lifesaving poems

Earlier this year my Lifesaving Poems blog enjoyed something of a milestone. Not as momentous as Jimmy Anderson taking his 600th Test wicket, perhaps, but important for me in a symbolic way nevertheless. If you want to know what I am talking about, scroll down to the foot of this webpage and look at the number of visitors.
It’s quite something, and I am proud of…

Remembering the Great Hunger
March is Irish-American Heritage month. While we often celebrate our heritage with parades, the wearing o’the green, corned beef and “Slaintes,” we also remember the road to America taken by our ancestors. Many have been here for quite a long time but a huge number of emigrants from Ireland arrived during/immediately after The Great Hunger.
The Great Hunger/Irish Famine/Potato Famine was the reason behind the Irish population, in Ireland, being cut by approximately 20-25%. About one million people died from starvation or disease stemming from starvation during these years.*
I once had someone tell me that an Irish music selection was so depressing but that the next one I played was so fun--that is the complexity of the Irish. The rich history of Ireland’s people is both despondence and despair mixed with joy and cheer. You cannot enjoy a great Irish pub song without also understanding the morose ballads.
This past week I watched the IFC film Black ‘47. It is a historical fiction film set during the times of the famine. Feeney returns to his Irish homeland after serving the English army in foreign wars only to find he now has a personal obligation to avenge his family.
It’s not an easy watch but the actors do a wonderful job of setting the grim scene. You can see the development of tragedies and also the questioning of stances by some characters. This film is not a documentary, so here are some read-alikes if you’d like to learn more about Irish history:
Adult Nonfiction:
Atlas of the Great Irish Famine --This large volume is as beautiful as it is tragic. The information included inside will give a depth of understanding to the history.
The Killing of Major Denis Mahon by Peter Duffy
Famine Diary by Brendan O Cathaoir -- Includes excerpts from The Irish Times and primary resources
The Famine Ships: The Irish Exodus to America by Edward Laxton -- includes words taken directly from passengers and those living through these experiences
DVD Documentary: The Story of Ireland -- an informative overview of the history of Ireland (BBC Video, 2012)
Youth Nonfiction: Feed the Children First by Mary E Lyons -- This provides a brief overview of the famine suitable for older adolescents.
Fiction: Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly The Irishman’s Daughter by V.S. Alexander Only the River Runs Free by Bodie Thoene

Remembering Derek Mahon
by Dr Sorcha Fogarty
Derek Mahon, whose poem “Everything Is Going To Be All Right” brought solace to many during the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, died at his home in Kinsale, Co. Cork, aged 78 on October 01 2020. Regarded by many as “The poet’s poet”, Mahon has written some of the most respected and admired contemporary poetry in the English language, winning numerous awards for his work including the prestigious David Cohen Prize for a lifetime achievement in literature. He has produced in excess of twenty collections of poetry, has adapted literary novels for Film and Television, and has worked as a literary journalist for many Irish and UK newspapers and magazines.
Born in Belfast in 1941, Mahon was the only child of working-class, Church of Ireland parents. His father was a shipping engineer, while his mother, who had worked for a flax spinning company before she married, devoted herself to housework. They were Protestants, as Mahon told the Paris review, but not slavishly so: “They weren’t really serious church people. I mean, they were Protestants! There‘s no such thing as a devout Protestant, is there? Protestants aren’t devout, they’re staunch.” After Skegoneil Primary School, he attended the Royal Belfast Academical Institution, where he started writing and publishing poems, winning the first of many prizes when he was 17, and was involved in amateur dramatics, also participating in debates. Having made the decision to attend Trinity College, Dublin, Mahon stated that he “rumbled Belfast for the bigoted corrupt dump that it was and I was delighted to get out of it”. Turning his back on the North, however, also meant severing links to his ageing parents: he missed the death and funeral of each of them. He matriculated in Trinity College to read English, French and Philosophy, and although he formed many friendships with writers such as Michael Longley, Eavan Boland, and Brendan Kennelly, his Trinity years were difficult. He was a less than diligent student, twice expelled for poor attendance at lectures, and, in his second year, he allegedly attempted suicide by jumping into the Liffey at Butt Bridge following a “personal crisis”. Mahon, however, remembers it differently, and in one of the essays in “Red Sails” (2014), makes the comment, “Jump in the river for fun and someone will say you tried to commit suicide”. As noted by Stephen Enniss I his book on Mahon (2015), the truth of the matter may be contained in Michael Longley’s pithy summing up of the event: “partly theatrical, partly suicidal”. However, it was at Trinity that he decided to devote his life to poetry. Mahon left Trinity in 1965 to take up studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, but his stay in Paris only lasted a year, and he subsequently worked his way through Canada and the United States.
In 1965, he won an Eric Gregory Award, and three years later published his first full collection, “Night-Crossing”. During these years, he travelled a great deal: England, France, Belgium, Germany, Canada, and the USA. He worked at a great many disparate jobs, and even managed to finish his degree at Trinity but did not attend the graduation ceremony. In 1967, Mahon began seeing Doreen Douglas, a Trinity classmate, whom he married five years later. Not an easy marriage, it involved numerous, and increasingly lengthy and acrimonious, separations. Mahon would appear to have been a reluctant husband and father - they had two children - and things were greatly worsened by his problem drinking and, in 1986, adultery. Mahon continued to write, publishing six books of poems between 1972 and 1985, as well as various pamphlets. He worked for Vogue, the New Statesman, and the BBC, but could never really hold down a regular job, which exacerbated matters further with his wife. He then entered a prolonged period of writer's block, during which he turned to the translation of French poetry, especially that of Philippe Jaccottet. In 1975, he wrote what was to become his most celebrated poem, “A Disused Shed in Co Wexford”, described by John Banville as “the best single poem written in Ireland since the death of Yeats”.
A Disused Shed in Co. Wexford
Let them not forget us, the weak souls among the asphodels. —Seferis, Mythistorema (for J. G. Farrell) Even now there are places where a thought might grow — Peruvian mines, worked out and abandoned To a slow clock of condensation, An echo trapped for ever, and a flutter Of wildflowers in the lift-shaft, Indian compounds where the wind dances And a door bangs with diminished confidence, Lime crevices behind rippling rain barrels, Dog corners for bone burials; And in a disused shed in Co. Wexford, Deep in the grounds of a burnt-out hotel, Among the bathtubs and the washbasins A thousand mushrooms crowd to a keyhole. This is the one star in their firmament Or frames a star within a star. What should they do there but desire? So many days beyond the rhododendrons With the world waltzing in its bowl of cloud, They have learnt patience and silence Listening to the rooks querulous in the high wood. They have been waiting for us in a foetor Of vegetable sweat since civil war days, Since the gravel-crunching, interminable departure Of the expropriated mycologist. He never came back, and light since then Is a keyhole rusting gently after rain. Spiders have spun, flies dusted to mildew And once a day, perhaps, they have heard something — A trickle of masonry, a shout from the blue Or a lorry changing gear at the end of the lane. There have been deaths, the pale flesh flaking Into the earth that nourished it; And nightmares, born of these and the grim Dominion of stale air and rank moisture. Those nearest the door grow strong — ‘Elbow room! Elbow room!’ The rest, dim in a twilight of crumbling Utensils and broken pitchers, groaning For their deliverance, have been so long Expectant that there is left only the posture. A half century, without visitors, in the dark — Poor preparation for the cracking lock And creak of hinges; magi, moonmen, Powdery prisoners of the old regime, Web-throated, stalked like triffids, racked by drought And insomnia, only the ghost of a scream At the flash-bulb firing-squad we wake them with Shows there is life yet in their feverish forms. Grown beyond nature now, soft food for worms, They lift frail heads in gravity and good faith. They are begging us, you see, in their wordless way, To do something, to speak on their behalf Or at least not to close the door again. Lost people of Treblinka and Pompeii! ‘Save us, save us,’ they seem to say, ‘Let the god not abandon us Who have come so far in darkness and in pain. We too had our lives to live. You with your light meter and relaxed itinerary, Let not our naive labours have been in vain!’
As well as problems in his own private life, Mahon was beset by problems in the public sphere. The Northern Ireland Troubles started just after “Night-Crossing” was published, and left him deeply disturbed and perplexed. In 1977, he was appointed Writer-in-Residence at the New University of Ulster. When that position terminated in 1979, he left Northern Ireland for good. Though he found it difficult to deal head on with the Troubles, it was a recurring theme in his work. In “A Postcard from Berlin”, for example, he tells Paul Durcan, the poem’s dedicatee:
“I can imagine your dismay/As, cornered in some zinc café,/You read of another hunger-strike,/A postman blasted off his bike…” Essentially, Mahon was a poet of dislocation. His work revealed a fervent desire to resolve the ambiguities in life: between the secular and the sacred; past and future; natural and unnatural. The theme of loss, exile, and isolation is a repeating preoccupation in Mahon's work, as he holds a deep interest for figures that live on the fringes of contemporary society, “the unreconciled, in their metaphysical pain/dangle from lampposts in the dawn rain” (“Glengormley”, 1979)
Indeed, it seems that Mahon himself was one of those “unreconciled” characters which feature so largely in his work. As his relentless travels show, he was a wanderer at heart. However, Mahon was constantly plagued by poor finances and frequently hospitalised for alcoholism. He was one of a great number of exorbitantly talented writers who battled alcohol addiction. Widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of all time, Brendan Behan described himself as a “drinker with a writing problem”, and the prolific Flann O’Brien died from alcoholic complications at 54. A comprehensive list of creative geniuses who dealt with addiction in many forms would be too great a digression here, but it is difficult not to acknowledge the connection between addiction, other mental health disorders, and genius. In his article discussing the association between major mental disorders and geniuses, Psychiatrist Nicholas Pediaditakis reminds us that, “There exists an association between creativity and major mental disorders knows since antiquity. Aristotle, in his perspicactity, stated, ‘There is no genius without having a touch of madness’” (Pediaditakis, 2014). Mahon has been described as a “truculent character”, more comfortable being in the position of an outsider. Mahon himself states, “it is important for me to be on the outside looking in”. He wove together history, personal demons and quiet contemplation in works that could be dark but also spoke of renewal. His sympathy was often with “waste” – an example of which is the famous “A Disused Shed in Co. Wexford” – and critics such as Hugh Haughton have noted that there is an indisputable connection between order and detritus in Mahon’s work (Haughton, 2002), exemplifying the poet’s paradoxical fascination with trash as, to paraphrase “A Disused Shed”, “a place where thought might grow”.
Essentially, Mahon produced poems that combined classical allusion with vivid everyday detail, and explored history, conflict and personal demons with great wit, elegance, and skepticism. In his work, states John Byrne, Mahon completely eschews complacency, showing a readiness to confront in himself the “metaphysical unease” with which modern man and his literature are afflicted. Following Mahon’s death, President Michael D. Higgins said “The loss of Derek Mahon […] is like the falling of oak trees. We are left with hope from the fruit of the acorns in which the writing and its encouragement represents as legacy”. No doubt, now that Mahon himself has gone, his work will be studied assiduously with a renewed interest and vigour. Mahon’s work is a testament to the fact that it is possible to create something beautiful out of darkness and despair, a fact which could serve us well during this difficult year. In “Antarctica”, Mahon says, “‘I am just going outside and may be some time.’/The others nod, pretending not to know./At the heart of the ridiculous, the sublime./He leaves them reading and begins to climb…”. With his incredible body of work, Mahon has indeed left us with plenty to read. And it is, all of it, sublime.

Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski out against Bears
Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski out against Bears Patriots’ Rob Gronkowski out against Bears https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
The New England Patriots have ruled out tight end Rob Gronkowski for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears because of ankle and back injuries.
The five-time Pro Bowler had been on the injury report the past few weeks because of an ankle issue. The Patriots said Friday he also has a back problem.
Gronkowski had not missed a game this season. He leads the Patriots with 405 yards receiving and is second with 26 receptions.
New England is also missing right tackle Marcus Cannon (concussion) and third-string tight end Jacob Hollister (hamstring).
Beware of betting the Bears
Hair tackles could be banned next year
Kryk’s picks for NFL Week 7
Two-time All-Pro pass rusher Khalil Mack is active for Chicago after being listed as questionable because of a right ankle injury. He was hurt early in last week’s loss at Miami.
Los Angeles Chargers running back Melvin Gordon did not play against the Tennessee Titans after aggravating a hamstring injury during the trip to London.
Gordon, who has rushed for 466 yards and scored a total of nine touchdowns this season, did not practice on Friday, when coach Anthony Lynn said he was “being extra cautious with him” after the flight.
Still, the Chargers added Gordon to the injury report on Saturday, listing him as questionable, and decided to put him through a pregame workout to determine his availability.
The Chargers were also without K Caleb Sturgis, handing kicking duties to Michael Badgley for the second consecutive week.
Tennessee welcomed back ILB Wesley Woodyard, who missed the past two games with a shoulder injury, but were without SS Kenny Vaccaro (elbow), who is out for the third consecutive week.
Houston safety Andre Hal, in remission after being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in May, is active for the first time this season as the Texans face Jacksonville.
New Jaguars running back Carlos Hyde is inactive two days after being acquired in a trade with Cleveland. Jacksonville gave up a fifth-round pick in 2019 for Hyde, the Browns’ leading rusher this season. Hyde has 382 yards and five touchdowns.
Jacksonville plans to make Hyde the backup beginning next week against Philadelphia in London. Duke Johnson will be the starting running back for Hyde’s former team as Cleveland travels to Tampa Bay.
Houston also will be without right guard Zach Fulton, who missed practice all week with an ankle injury. Greg Mancz starts in his place.
Running back Dalvin Cook is missing his third straight game for the Vikings with a hamstring injury, leaving Latavius Murray as the starter.
The Jets are short-handed in their secondary against Minnesota’s receiving duo of Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs. Buster Skrine is out for the second consecutive game with a concussion. Marcus Maye broke his right thumb last Sunday against Indianapolis.
Derek Anderson replaces Josh Allen at quarterback for Buffalo after the 35-year old veteran signed with the Bills last week. Anderson has previously started games for Cleveland, Arizona and Carolina.
Wide receiver Ray Ray McCloud did not make the trip for what the Bills described as a “non-injury reason,” leaving Buffalo with only four active receivers. Pro Bowl WR T.Y. Hilton returns for the Colts after missing the past two games with an injured hamstring.
Miami wide receiver DeVante Parker is a healthy scratch against Detroit amid trade rumours. He has played in only two games because of injuries but practiced this week.
With defensive tackle Gerald McCoy (calf) and defensive end Vinny Curry (ankle) inactive for Tampa Bay, Defensive end Carl Nassib, who was with the Browns for three seasons, and rookie defensive tackle Vita Vea get the start for the Buccaneers.

The Fiesta Bowl live blog: Penn State beats Washington in thriller
Trace McSorley led a huge win for the Nittany Lions.
Postgame
Some stats:
The most important stats:
Hard to beat a team when they’re going 13-for-17 on third downs. Barkley’s 92-yard score was the attention getter, but McSorley (32-for-41, 342 yards, 12-for-12 on third downs) was by far the most valuable player in this game. He’ll enter 2018 as a preseason Heisman favorite.
Fourth Quarter
0:00. Victory formation. Penn State is your Fiesta Bowl champ. Wild finish.
0:05. TRICKERATION. Hook-and-ladder from Fuller to Pettis. It works, and Pettis gets to the PSU 30, but he’s by the sideline and has to blindly throw the ball backwards. It’s picked off by Brandon Smith.
Pettis could have simply run out of bounds, but there wasn’t really any way for him to know there were still a few seconds on the clock.
0:15. Browning overshoots Dissly. Fourth down. Watch the trickeration.
0:20. Browning escapes pressure but can’t quite connect with Fuller. Third down.
0:26. McElroy brings up what was just crossing my mind: this is Boise State hook-and-ladder territory. Browning throws the ball away on first down.
0:34. MISSED FIELD GOAL. The most important drive of the game for Penn State:
First-and-10 from the 25: McSorley two-yard keeper.
Second-and-8 from the 27: Shovel pass to Gesicki for one yard.
Third-and-7 from the 28: Rollout pass to Johnson for 12 yards and a first down. Clock moves under five minutes.
First-and-10 from the 40: McSorley dumps to Barkley on the left sideline for five yards.
Second-and-5 from the 45: Barkley bounces to the left for four yards.
Third-and-1 from the 49: Barkley powers ahead for three yards with minimal blocking.
First-and-10 from the UW 48: Sanders up the middle for one yard. Washington calls its first timeout with 3:02 left.
Second-and-9 from the 47: Barkley bounces to the right but gains only one yard.
Third-and-8 from the 46: With color commentator Greg McElroy saying “I’d run it,” McSorley moves to 12-for-12 passing on third downs, finding Hamilton for 14 yards and yet another first down.
First-and-10 from the 32: Sanders up the middle for three yards. Washington calls its second timeout with 1:39 left. Last set of downs for the Huskies.
Second-and-7 from the 29: Sanders up the middle for five yards. Washington calls its final timeout with 1:34 left.
Third-and-2 from the 24: Barkley bounces off left tackle but comes up about a half-yard short. PSU runs the clock down to 38 seconds left and calls timeout. The Nittany Lions will go for it.
Fourth-and-1 from the 23: FALSE START by Brendan Mahon. Ouch.
Fourth-and-6 from the 28: Tyler Davis’ 45-yard attempt is wide right.
6:52. PENN STATE 35, WASHINGTON 28. The most important drive of the game for Washington:
First-and-10 from the 22: Yetur Gross-Matos sacks Browning for a loss of two.
Second-and-12 from the 20: Browning to Ty Jones for 11 yards.
Third-and-1 from the 31: Hello, Myles Gaskin. Sixty-nine yards straight up the middle for a touchdown.
Nice.
Gaskin had 13 carries for 29 yards. Now he’s got 14 for 98. Seven-point game.

8:06. Nice stand by the UW defense. Two Barkley carries gain zero yards (in Barkley fashion, he gains three, then loses three), and the Huskies finally stop McSorley on a third-and-long. He has to dump the ball to Barkley, who comes up well short of the sticks. UW is running out of time but has escaped the dagger once more. The Huskies will start from their 22.
10:11. Six-and-out for Washington. A Browning-to-Ahmed sidearmer moves the chains once, but Browning can’t find anyone open on the following third-and-9. Whitford outkicks his coverage a bit on a 54-yarder, and Thompkins returns it 20 yards. PSU will start at its 34. Once again, PSU will attempt to apply the dagger. The Lions haven’t been able to yet.
13:05. INTERCEPTION. Pretty crafty by Washington: To cut down on McSorley’s third-down success, Washington set up a third-and-short. Barkley is stuffed for a big loss to set up fourth-and-6 from the 30 ... which PSU converts when McSorley throws to Barkley on the sideline and he hurdles a defender to the 23.
After another short pass to Barkley, however, McSorley is picked off again. Ben Burr-Kirven bats an over-the-middle pass at the line, and it’s picked off by Austin Joyner. Washington is still somehow within two possessions and will start at its 19.
Third Quarter
0:00. With passes to Gesicki and Hamilton, McSorley’s able to work the Nittany Lions past midfield, and he once again throws a perfect ball on third down, this time on third-and-8 to Johnson.
It’ll be third-and-2 from the Washington 26 when the fourth quarter begins. PSU has the dagger in hand.
4:00. Huge three-and-out. Browning finds Drew Sample for six yards, but he can’t find anyone open on third-and-4, and Shareef Miller trips him up as he’s trying to leave the pocket. PSU has a chance to go back up three scores as we reach the back end of the third quarter.
5:59. PENN STATE 35, WASHINGTON 21. Goodness, PSU’s been good on third downs. McSorley finds an opening and sprints for 24 yards to get the Nittany Lions near midfield, then continues his third-down clinic: he finds Johnson for 11 yards on third-and-7, then lobs to Hamilton for a 24-yard score on third-and-4.
McSorley on third downs: 8-for-8 for 152 yards and two touchdowns.
9:57. PENN STATE 28, WASHINGTON 21. Washington comes out with a different plan of attack. Browning throws short repeatedly, and the Huskies attempt to employ a little tempo. He completes passes to Ty Jones and Fuller for first downs, and Gaskin runs for two more, and UW is to the Penn State 31.
On third-and-7 from the 28, Browning finds no pressure in the pocket and is able to wait for Fuller to come open in the end zone. Thirteen plays, 80 yards, five minutes, touchdown. Absolutely perfect drive from UW, and it’s a one-score game.
Halftime
Some stats:
When you’ve nearly tripled your opponent’s yardage, you expect to be winning by more than 14 points, but Washington bought itself some margin for error with those two turnovers. One prevented a PSU score, and the other created one for the Huskies.
Despite pretty equal to-go yardage, PSU is 6-for-7 on third downs, and UW is 3-for-7.

Second Quarter
0:00. Two Gaskin rushes and a Browning scramble run out the clock.
0:55. Sanders nearly makes another huge mistake. He lets the kickoff bounce in front of him, and he’s barely able to fall on it at the PSU 12 before the coverage unit gets there. Three Barkley carries move the chains, then McSorley finds Johnson on a post route for an 18-yard gain.
PSU shows extreme confidence, calling timeout before a third-and-9 with 1:09 left, but McSorley can only find Thompkins for a five-yarder, and PSU punts for the first time of the day. The timeout doesn’t backfire, though: Blake Gillikin’s punt travels 47 yards and is downed at the 6.
4:15. PENN STATE 28, WASHINGTON 14. Finally, Gaskin finds some room. After Browning completes short passes to Fuller, Ahmed, and Baccellia, Gaskin takes a Wildcat snap, waits for his blocks, and scores from 13 yards out. The Huskies took full advantage of the turnover. Needed that desperately.
6:41. FUMBLE. Washington catches a break. McSorley pitches the ball to Sanders on an option, but Sanders isn’t looking for the ball for some reason. Ryan Bowman recovers at the PSU 33. UW has a plus-2 turnover margin, and it’s the only reason the Huskies aren’t down at least 28.
6:47. Massive danger time for UW. Gaskin is stopped for a gain of one, Browning is sacked by about eight different guys at once, and the Huskies go three-and-out. Whitford’s punt is a good one, but PSU will start at its 40 with plenty of time left in the half.
9:01. PENN STATE 28, WASHINGTON 7. College football is going to miss Saquon Barkley. So much. Penn State’s offensive line creates a lovely hole for No. 26, he outraces a safety to the sideline, and he’s gone. Ninety-two yards.
Power to Austin Joyner, No. 4, for busting his tail trying to catch him.
Washington's defense in regular season: Allowed 92 rushing yards per game, best in FBS Washington's defense vs. Saquon Barkley: Allowed 92 rushing yards on one play
— Matt Hinton (@MattRHinton) December 30, 2017
Penn State has 339 yards 20 minutes into the game. Against an excellent defense.
9:45. Dante Pettis sighting! Browning fakes left and hits Pettis on a screen. He uses his blockers and bursts upfield for 26 yards to the UW 46. But that’s as far as the Huskies get. Gaskin has been completely hemmed in — he gains just two yards on a carry and four yards on a screen — and a Browning pooch kick gets a nice roll inside the PSU 10.
Four Gaskin touches have gained a combined two yards. The Huskies gained 52 yards on the trick play pass, and their other 13 snaps have gained 41. The solution, obviously: more trick plays!
11:59. PENN STATE 21, WASHINGTON 7. PSU continues to try to spread the ball to just about everybody on the depth chart, but short passes to Tommy Stevens and Brandon Polk combine to gain just four yards. No worries — on third-and-6, McSorley fires an outright dart to Gesicki for 26 yards. He finds Johnson for 11 yards to the UW 35, and it’s scoring opportunity No. 4.
PSU dodges a major bullet when McSorley misfires and misses Stevens on a shovel pass. It’s batted around by defenders and just barely hits the ground. Given second life, McSorley lobs to Thompkins for 34 yards down to the 1. Sanders plunges into the end zone, and PSU’s back up 14.
McSorley has played with fire a couple of times, but he’s 16-for-21 for 196 yards and a touchdown, and he’s rushed four times for 26 yards. PSU is 6-for-6 on third downs. Damn.
14:57. PENN STATE 14, WASHINGTON 7. Browning sneaks into the end zone for a touchdown on the quarter’s first play. UW is alive.
First Quarter
0:00. UW’s first first down of the game comes via roughing-the-passer penalty, and then it’s TRICK PLAY TIME. This is Chris Petersen in the Fiesta Bowl, after all. Browning fires a lateral to Andre Baccellia, who finds tight end Will Dissly open deep for a 52-yard gain.
Either Boise State or Washington should play in the Fiesta Bowl every year.
The first quarter ends with Salvon Ahmed catching a short pass and rumbling down to the 1.
1:34. PENN STATE 14, WASHINGTON 0. Washington gets lucky; a McSorley keeper gains 12 yards, but a Washington defender leads with his head and makes contact with McSorley’s helmet as the QB is sliding. Textbook personal foul, but no call. But it just delays an eventual score all the same.
On the ensuing third-and-8, McSorley fires a slant to Hamilton for a first down, then hits Saaed Blacknall for 20 yards to the UW 20. Barkley gets to the left edge and gains eight yards, then Gesicki catches a short pass and gets to the 5. On third-and-goal from the 2, Barkley leaps into the end zone.
Nobody has averaged more than 5.7 yards per play against Washington all year. PSU is currently averaging 7.1. Current total yardage: PSU 171, UW 1.
6:46. Browning is unsettled. He throws a dangerous pass to Drew Sample, and it’s broken up. After Gaskin is stuffed again (this time by Jason Cabinda and Brandon Smith for a loss of one), he can’t escape PSU’s pass rush. He dodges two tacklers but eventually gets wrapped up by Tyrell Chavis. PSU runs into Whitford, but he gets off an unreturnable 53-yarder all the same. Damn.
8:23. INTERCEPTION. PSU opens another drive with a shovel pass, this one to Miles Sanders, and it gains four yards. After an incompletion, McSorley does a lovely job of scrambling from pressure, threatening to run, and finding tight end Mike Gesicki downfield for 17 yards. Washington is called for defensive holding on the next play, and it’s another scoring opportunity for the Nittany Lions.
Apparently that means it’s time to go deep again. But he lobs it too far for Gesicki (hard to do), and Byron Murphy makes an outstanding interception, dragging a toe inbounds on his way out.
Touchback. Bullet dodged.
9:46. After a short return and an illegal block penalty, Washington starts from its own 7 and quickly goes three-and-out. A Jake Browning pass to Aaron Fuller gains eight yards, but Ryan Buchholz stuffs Myles Gaskin on second down, and Browning can’t hit Fuller on a fade route on third.
Deandre Thompkins mishandles a nice Joel Whitford punt and just barely recovers it at his 34. #FumblesLuck
11:10. PENN STATE 7, WASHINGTON 0. Penn State is going to struggle against Washington’s dynamite defensive front, and one of the most interesting things about the early going is going to be how the Nittany Lions choose to attack it.
They start with a shovel pass to Saquon Barkley, but it loses a yard. Juwan Johnson drops a hurried pass by Trace McSorley on second down, but Barkley shakes free on third-and-11, taking a short pass 12 yards to move the chains.
That seems to relax PSU. The Nittany Lions enter UW territory with a nine-yard zone-read keeper by McSorley and a 15-yarder from Barkley, and after a couple of short passes lose yardage, McSorley finds DaeSean Hamilton open deep for a 48-yard score.
Teams don’t break off 48-yarders on Washington — the Huskies had allowed just one pass of 40-plus yards all year. Make it two. Tremendous start for PSU.
Preview by Alexis Chassen
Two high-octane offenses will face off in this year’s Fiesta Bowl, when the Washington Huskies take on the Penn State Nittany Lions, on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN (live stream).
This marks the third time in program history these two teams will meet, with Penn State holding the overall series lead, 2-0. The last meeting was in 1983, in the Aloha Bowl, when the Nittany Lions won 13-10 over the Huskies. Washington vs. Penn State news:
Penn State’s depth chart looks a bit different, with some returning from injuries and others not listed after having announced their intentions to transfer.
While both teams boost similar resumes, Washington could make a run in the second half if Penn State’s defense gets winded.
If UW is close going into the fourth, they will definitely have a depth advantage. This could well translate into anywhere between a 3- and 10-point net scoring advantage, assuming UW makes the requisite investments in the rushing attack early in the game. The key for UW will be to make this a physical game in order to test that Penn State depth.
On paper, the matchup seems pretty even, but with coordinator changes and injuries, the Nittany Lions will need to rely on some of the veteran, established players.
PSU will face the nation’s statistical best run defense - albeit one that faced one of the easiest schedules in FBS for the second year in a row - so this may be another game in which Trace McSorley will have to use the pass game in order to get Saquon Barkley going in likely his last game in the Basic Blues.
Running backs will rule the day
Both the Huskies and the Nittany Lions feature dominant running backs who are among the top of the FBS. Penn State’s Saquon Barkley didn’t quite finish as high as anticipated in the Heisman Trophy voting, but he’s still a dynamic rusher -- and return specialist — and will give the Huskies top-rated rush defense a tough task.
On the other side of the field is Washington running back Myles Gaskin. The Husky might not have the breakout numbers to match that of Barkley, but his consistency has kept him in line with the Big Ten rusher on the stat sheet.
While Barkley gets the check mark over Gaskin on the eye test, he can’t compare as a pure runner. Gaskin’s vision is absolutely phenomenal. You can’t put together a highlight package that is going to truly capture his brilliance. His dominance is in the ability to turn a 2-yard gain into 6 yards rather than a 10-yard gain into 80 yards.
With this being the last collegiate game for both Barkley and Gaskin, it’s fitting that they finally face each other on the gridiron for title supreme.
Washington vs. Penn State prediction:
Having its 2016 season ending in a CFP snub, and a 2017 season that was derailed by a stunning loss to Ohio State, Penn State is out for blood. James Franklin needs a way to keep his team motivated heading into the offseason — especially losing some big-time contributors to the NFL — and he’ll look to make a point against the Huskies.
