I want a Knives Out/Brick crossover, yes a Rian Johnson crossover.

Benoit Blanc and Brendan Frye run across each other investigating the same crime.  Their personalities don’t exactly mesh, and their styles clash.  Benoit observes and analyzes, catching the intricate details that make up the whole picture.  Brendan leads with his chin, getting his clues by annoying everyone by bleeding on them.  Midway through the film we find out what our leads know.

Benoit knows who arranged the murder, he’s just trying to put together who pulled the trigger.  Brendan, of course, is the exact opposite.  Brendan knows who the trigger person was and trying to find who was behind it.  Everything could have been settled in five minutes if the guys had shared info.  Finally they work together and everything is solved.

Then Benoit takes Brendan home and he and Phillip adopt the disaster child that is Brendan.

So the thing about Brick (a thing about Brick; there are many things about Brick) is that Brendan is kind of a shitty person. He's absolutely a shitty boyfriend.

When he was with Emily he isolated her. He justified it as protecting her, but the effect was to keep her from having a social life outside of him. When she does ask for help, his reaction is to go after her (admittedly shitty to her) friends. And when she calls him on it, Brendan asks, "who fed you that line, Em?" as though he doesn't see her as having any agency.

Even after she's killed (not a spoiler, it's the first scene in the film) Brendan acts like he's hunting her killers for her. As atonement or apology for his failure to save her. But it's vengeance. He's angry at himself for Emily's death and he's going to take it out on everyone he deems responsible.

And watching Brick, I just care so much about that quest. Like, not about Brendan; I don't care about his satisfaction. Which is a good thing, because Brendan is not a character that can be happy with any outcome. Especially the one he gets.

Brick will be released on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray on October 15 via Kino Lorber. The 2005 neo-noir mystery features reversible artwork.

Rian Johnson (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Knives Out) writes and directs. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars with Nora Zehetner, Noah Fleiss, Matt O'Leary, Noah Segan, Meagan Good, Emilie de Ravin, Richard Roundtree, and Lukas Haas.

He is! Isn’t he??!!

umm this won’t be my favourite character of him (Brendan Frye, my love) , but the movie is definitely 500 days of summer.

I’ve seen pics of the movie in the net since forever and whenever a guy friend goes thru a breakup he would post THAT scene screeshots all over his social media, but I never had the interest to watch it, probably cause Ive never been a fan of rom coms. However, once the whole zeroing on jgl started I had to watch it, I sat down to do so a bit reluctantly, hoping only to focus on his pretty face, and got very very pleasantly surprised!

The story was so captivating even if you know the ending, the actors are on point, the writing feels real, the music is awesome and most importantly the age matches. I could see myself in both of their shoes and made me reflect some of my present and past relationships (not necessarily romantic). Even tho he looked charming and cute as hell, I found myself forgetting about jgl and enjoying on the story more. Ive watched it 3 times and can’t stop recommending to my friends. It’s not the best movie jgl has ever been in (coughinceptioncough), but it’s the movie that resonated with me the most.

I know it's a better last name. but I have been calling him fry since the beginning and he was MY friend first (pretending no one else watched this eighteen year old movie before I did this year) and when I say frye that's like. that's a stranger to me. but brendan fry is my close personal friend. so that's his name now peace and love 🫂

While we wait for Rian Johnson's next Knives Out movie to hit our screens next year, take a trip down memory lane with his debut feature Brick. Released in 2005, the mystery thriller stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as teenager Brendan Frye, who's investigating the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend Emily (Lost's Emilie de Ravin) in the California suburbs. His search takes him into the underworld of a high school crime ring, paying homage to hard-boiled detective story tropes and dialogue.
