Why the “thanks I hate it”? Do you think it’s cringe that someone asked, that her answer was cringe or were you joking?
A combination of the first two. I saw a longer version of that video and first Melissa has to answer a question about something a Batwoman comic writer said or tweeted or whatever, that I guess somehow “proves” something about Supercorp. Then she hems and haws about this date question for even longer, emphasizing that she’s not a writer … clearly this isn’t something she’s spent any time thinking about.
I mean she’s getting paid so it’s no skin off her nose, and I’m sure she can decline these Cameo requests if they’re too out of pocket. I thought it was cringe when people were paying Brenda to talk about SC while the show was on the air too.
#are karamels also going to pay her to talk about their reunion scenario or something#I realize this is a minority opinion if the tags on that post are any indication#asks

I think at the younger end of UK screen drama we do have the problem that you mostly have to be slim and pretty to get in (the only young-young fat actresses I can think of who get mainstream attention are Nicola Coughlan and Sharon Rooney), but this is misguided. It's misguided because what British TV really, really likes – with the substantial exceptions of the extremely beautiful Suranne Jones, Vicki McClure, Keeley Hawes, and Jodie Whittaker, is a middle-aged/older woman who is either not obviously traditionally attractive, or who can be but who also can look absolutely rough as, with a variety of body types (including very skinny -- but not accompanied by a Romola Garai/Keeley Hawes sort of face). See Siobhan Finneran, Anna Maxwell-Martin, Lesley Sharp, Anne Reid, Imelda Staunton, Monica Dolan, Juliet Stevenson, Brenda Blethyn, Jessica Hynes, Sheila Hancock, Lucy Briers, Fay Ripley, Katherine Kelly. Again, a lot of those women aren't fat, though some are/have been, but even when they're skinny, they're not an American casting call line-up in facial appearance. They're not Carey Mulligan or similar! Boff makes the excellent point re: Coronation Street & Doctors, and I've basically excluded soap actresses here, although Sarah Lancashire started on Corrie, as did Katherine Kelly. And even people like Rebecca Front and Gemma Whelan are probably Too Plain For America.
like idk in terms of diverse casting the body diversity on our flag means death is like nothing i've personally seen. they truly have all shapes and sizes. they have fat actors (plural) on there and they literally just get to exist as fat people without it being A Thing. fucking phenomenal

1980s Horror Film Character Names
I totally forgot I’d started making this last year! I think I never posted it because I wanted to find more names, but there’s already a decent amount and I don’t feel like being that tedious about names right now lol.
It’s first & last names (separated for mix & match potential) of characters from iconic late 1970s & 1980s horror movies. I think I started looking for cheesier B-movies to pull from, but yeah it’s been a whole year so I forget.

Mel Tillis, country music legend, has died at 85
Country music legend Mel Tillis has died at 85
Juli Thanki|USA TODAY NETWORK – Tennessee
NASHVILLE — Country Music Hall of Famer and Grand Ole Opry member Mel Tillis died early Sunday morning at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla., according to his publicist Don Murry Grubbs. The suspected cause of death is respiratory failure.
The singer, songwriter, comedian and businessman, whose genuine warmth and down-home humor drew countless fans, was 85. In his six-decade career, he recorded more than 60 albums, notched three dozen top 10 singles and wrote several hit songs that are now regarded as classics.
Lonnie Melvin Tillis was born to Lonnie Lee and Burma Tillis on Aug. 8, 1932, near Tampa. His speech impediment developed after a childhood bout of malaria; Tillis was mocked for his stammer when he was young, but would later use it to comedic effect on stage and screen. "After a lot of years and more hurting than I like to remember, I can talk about it lightly — which eases things a bit," he wrote in Stutterin' Boy, the autobiography he released in 1984. "It's a way of showing people that it hasn't licked me, so it doesn't have to lick others."
A child of the Great Depression, Tillis knew hard work from an early age. By the age of 10 he was shelling peas in a cannery with his mother and siblings, "but there was something more than peas in that warehouse," he wrote in Stutterin' Boy.
"It was music — hillbilly music. ... I'd hardly heard any music like that before ... Bill Monroe, Eddy Arnold, and the Carter Family. What a wonderful discovery!"
In high school, Tillis taught himself to play a guitar his older brother Richard bought, and soon he was getting invited to play at parties and events around his town. After a stint at the University of Florida, Tillis enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Okinawa and served as a baker; he also sang on Armed Forces Radio with a band called The Westerners.
Upon leaving the Air Force in 1955, he returned to Florida and found work as a fireman on the Atlantic Coast Line railroad. When he wasn't working, he used his railroad pass to come to Nashville and visit publishers in town to pitch his songs (they'd tell him to go back home and work on his music).
He moved to Nashville in 1957 to pursue a music career full time. That year, I’m Tired, a song he wrote and country star Webb Pierce recorded, went to No. 3 on the charts. Pierce found success with several other Tillis songs, including Holiday for Love, Honky Tonk Song, Tupelo County Jail, I Ain’t Never and No Love Have I.
During the 1960s, Tillis became one of Nashville's go-to writers. Songs like Ruby (Don't Take Your Love to Town), Mental Revenge and Detroit City, among others, became country classics, and have been recorded by dozens of artists in the past half-century. Brenda Lee took Emotions, written by Tillis and Ramsey Kearney, to No. 7 on the pop charts in 1961.
Tillis earned his first charting country single in 1958 when he recorded The Violet and A Rose for Columbia. Fourteen years later, I Ain't Never became his first No. 1. Five more would follow, including Good Woman Blues and Heart Healer (both 1976); I Believe in You (1978); Coca Cola Cowboy (1979) and Southern Rains (1980).
As a recording artist, Tillis was most successful in the 1970s, with two dozen top 10 hits. Five of those were chart-toppers, including Coca-Cola Cowboy, which was featured in the Clint Eastwood film Every Which Way But Loose. The Country Music Association named Tillis entertainer of the year in 1976. That year he also was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.
In addition to his music career, Tillis appeared regularly on TV shows such as Hee Haw and Hollywood Squares, was in multiple films, including Smokey and the Bandit 2 and Cannonball Run, and appeared in commercials for the fast-food chain Whataburger, which further enhanced his visibility.
When Tillis' chart success began to wane, he began focusing more attention on his business ventures. He owned radio stations and acquired several publishing companies with thousands of songs in their catalogs. He also opened his own theater in Branson, Mo., performing several thousand shows there before selling the property.
In 1984, Ricky Skaggs took one of his songs, Honey (Open That Door), to the top of the charts.
In the 1990s, Tillis, Waylon Jennings, Bobby Bare and Jerry Reed formed the supergroup Old Dogs; the band released a self-titled album of songs penned by Shel Silverstein.
It's hard to say who was prouder in 2007 when his daughter, singer Pam Tillis, inducted her father into the Grand Ole Opry. Later that year, Mel Tillis was working in his garden when he got a phone call telling him he was going to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He was so stunned he dropped the eggplant he was holding.
"I'm just so thankful, for everything," he kept repeating the day of the ceremony. Four years later, Tillis was named a National Medal of Arts recipient for his contributions to country music; he received his award in February 2012 during a ceremony at the White House.
If Tillis wasn't onstage (and he often was; during the peak of his career, he played up to 300 dates a year), chances are he could be found fishing, gardening or painting — he'd often donate the proceeds from the sales of his art to charity. He toured with his band The Statesiders (named after his 1966 single Stateside), and regularly appeared on the Opry into his 80s. "It so happened that I found what I was good for," Tillis told The (Nashville) Tennessean of his music career in 1965. "I'm lucky. A lot of people go through life and never find out."

Watching The National Reserve and Sarah Shook & the Disarmers play back-to-back at the Ardmore Music Hall last Saturday night, I realized that I was witnessing two nascent Americana bands literally headed in opposite directions.
Shook & Co. were on their last stop of a four-shows-in-four-nights East coast mini-tour, having been on tour — not only across the U.S., but in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Canada, the Netherlands, the U.K. and Spain to boot — almost non-stop since early March of 2018. The National Reserve, on the other hand, were just about to embark on the European leg of their ongoing tour, with shows starting next week in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany in support of their debut album Hotel La Grange.
Having caught Shook & the Disarmers, along with Zephaniah O’hora and Grady Hoss & The Sidewinders, at the tiny Dawson Street Pub in Philly in April of 2018, I was curious to see how the notoriously hard grind of life on the road might have affected them. The most obvious result was that the band was tight as hell, rolling through the best songs from their two albums (2017’s “Sidelong” and their 2018 follow-up “Years”) with precision, finesse and intensity. Shook’s voice was in fine fiddle and got stronger as the night went on, while guitarist Eric Peterson and pedal steel player Phil Sullivan took turns laying down tasty, Bakersfield-inspired licks. Bassist Aaron Oliva made playing barroom-brawl country on an upright bass look easy, while drummer Kevin McClain held the band’s groove steady throughout, shining particularly (though unobtrusively) on their trainbeat-driven numbers.
The band had clearly developed a solid sense of showmanship since I last saw them, when they came across as more of a fun-loving bar band that didn’t take itself all that seriously. Last March, Shook’s banter was carefree and edgy in that tough-chick, “I- don’t-give-a-shit” way of hers, the band happily chatted with the audience and the other bands’ personnel both on-stage and on the tiny patio by Dawson Street’s side door, they drank a just a wee bit (a-hem!), and they seemed genuinely to be having one hell of a good time.
This time around they seemed more self-aware, image-wise. Perhaps it was just that they are now playing bigger venues (the Ardmore Music Hall is easily eight times the size of the tiny Dawson St. Pub) as well as to more popular acclaim, with its attendant critical microscopes. Peterson, for example, came dressed up for the occasion, resplendent in a black silk top-hat decorated with a bright red band; with his lean, black-clad frame, dark-framed glasses and distinctly parted fu manchu- like grey beard, he looked the part of a poster-ready rock star.
The other band members were less nattily attired though. Except for Shook, who wore her usual combo of leather jacket (quickly removed), tattoos and fitted tee, they came casually dressed in grey t-shirts and jeans. Still, combined with the stage’s greater remove (compared to the stageless Dawson St. at least), the relative lack of between- song banter, the professional staging and light management, the overall impression I had was of a band that was less casual, but by the same token more professional and intent on taking their craft seriously.
The humorous moments I caught during the band’s time on stage at the AMH came when the singer ceremoniously tipped her plastic cup of whiskey with an over-hearty “Cheers!” to the crowd, and then later when I caught a glimpse of the band’s set list, with its cute, inside-jokey replacement of several abbreviated song names with titles like “Farting” (for “Parting Words”), “Home Fries” (for “Keep the Home Fires Burning”) and “Whut” (for “What It Takes”).
The crowd ate it up, singing along knowingly with several numbers. Those included “Fuck Up,” onto which the audience added an incongruously merry gloss to Shock’s weary, simmering anger, and “New Ways to Fail,” during which the crowd gave special emphasis to the line “I need this shit like I need ANOTHER HOLE IN MY HEAD.” By the time they got to “Damned If I Do, Damned If I Don’t” — during which Sullivan’s pedal steel quickly rose to the feisty occasion — a bunch of white- haired older gentleman in flannel shirts, jeans and trucker caps were crowding the front of the stage and shouting along with every word.
The only rumble of dissatisfaction I sensed from the crowd came when the band limited its encore performance to a single song. (In response to Shook’s ”We’ve got one more for you,” the crowd responded pleadingly: “How about two more?!?”) But what a performance that encore was! — with Shook spitting out the “Nah-AIILL in this here coffin” like an angry Appalachian cast-off, Peterson cueing up yet another habañero-hot Telecaster solo, and Sullivan following that with a series of well-lubricated pedal steel lines that prompted a chorus of “Yee-haw!!!s” from the balcony.
Two earlier moments in the show shared the energy and joy of that encore. The first came when Shook delivered the recently-released ballad “The Way She Looked at You,” digging in passionately on the mournful chorus while Sullivan’s pedal steel wept openly behind her. The other big bump in energy, which sent a perceptible electric zing through the crowd this time, came when Peterson and Sullivan traded fours about 2:30 into “What It Takes,” while drummer Kevin McClain alternated deftly between delicate rim taps and rock-solid pounding. The ensemble playing was as tight as on the recording, but hearing and seeing it performed live was absolutely thrilling. It was clear at these moments that the band was not only clicking on all fours, but actively enjoying itself.
In short, Shook and her Disarmers delivered on all counts and clearly matched or exceeded the audience’s expectations. Still, to my mind at least, they did so in the professional and slightly cool manner of, say, a really good mechanic — rather than, in contrast with last year’s pre-European tour show at Dawson St., a band that was excited to be raisin’ hell out on the road, meeting new folks every night, and basking in the glory of a great new record.
On the other hand, the latter was exactly the vibe The National Reserve gave off during their thrilling 75+ minute, 11-song set. While I’m not sure the Reserve is quite “there yet” (to use a hack-critical phrase) in terms of the level of their songwriting — which is not as memorable and distinctive as Shook’s, for example — and their approach’s originality, they brought an impressive energy and verve, along with a white-hot level of musicianship, to their set at the AMH.
Like Shook and her Disarmers on their last two passes through Philly in 2018 (the second was at Johnny Brenda’s in mid-September), the Reservists seemed intent on kicking butt and taking no prisoners at AMH. Led by songwriter, vocalist and multi- instrumentalist Sean Walsh along with the towering Jon Ladeau on vocals and guitar, The Reserve came out rocking right off the bat with a Ladeau-led power-poppish number that incorporated three-part harmonies and (naturally) a jangly Rickenbacher guitar. Ladeau is a BIG guy and a strong vocalist with a rough-edged, soulful voice, and with his long dark hair and beard, American flag-adorned jeans jacket and hiking boots, he projected a powerful yet laid-back presence.
Walsh, who grew up about a half-hour from Ardmore, took over the lead vocals on the second number, and the two continued to toss the lead vocal baton back and forth for the duration of the set, with bassist Scott Povrick and drummer Brian Geltner intermittently contributing tasty harmonies. Walsh adorned this bouncy, melodic number with a scorching Les Paul solo featuring a nifty descending slide lick, which was followed by a second solo by Ladeau that actually drew screams from the crowd.
This back-and-forth dynamic, with their talents intertwining at times, continued throughout, much to the crowd’s delight. The Reservists followed those first two numbers with a wide variety of tunes, including a swampy blues rocker highlighted by a Freddie King-like solo by Ladeau; a folksy-twangy Americana singalong number called “Abe Lincoln”; a southern rocker featuring “Sweet Home, Alabama”-ish chord changes, a dual guitar attack AND dueling vocals; and a cover of Derroll Adams’ “Roll On, Babe” that incorporated a vaguely Caribbean shuffle beat, a glissando solo over chimey rhythm guitar effects, and a superb Les Paul slide solo by Walsh.
The second half of their set included the title song from their album Hotel La Grange, a slow ballad about meeting the “queen of Bowling Green” at that hotel; a mid-tempo country rocker with Allman Brothers overtones; a slide-centered blues rocker that evolved into an extended jam that showed off all of the band’s skills, drawing wild applause from the crowd and the exclamation “MAN, this is fun!” from Ladeau; and a tasty roots-gospel-country rock singalong with the refrain “Let me ride in your big Cadillac, Lord Jesus / Let me ride in your big Cadillac.” The audience happily crooned along on the latter.
They closed with a jammy southern rocker that featured more tasty harmonies and snazzy tempo changes. Watson and Ladeau cut loose on the breakdowns and solos during this one, without the song’s ever getting raggedy or wooly. Tight in concept and delivery, it was a fitting finale to the band’s impressive set.
I would be remiss if I failed to mention local duo Hannah Taylor and Rekardo Lee (aka, Jesse Lundy), who opened the evening with a fun eight-song set of blues-based numbers. With her big up-draft of bright red hair and blonde cowboy boots, Taylor belted out these tunes — which encompassed everything from mellow mid-tempo numbers, to a rockin’ Ricky’ Nelson number (“I Believe”), to some obscure, low-down 1920s blues ditties and even a slow, sweet version of “Blue Bayou” — with a twangy yet robust voice reminiscent of early Bonnie Raitt. Alternating between a metal resonator guitar that was “double-signed” (the first signature had rubbed off) by Edgar Winter and a jumbo acoustic, Lee complemented Taylor’s voice perfectly with his good-’n’-growly slide accompaniment and Chuck Berry-inflected blues licks. Their good-natured, diverse set proved the perfect aperitif for the night’s main courses.

Post #BIT18
It’s always a thrill for me to sit back after a conference and reflect on my learning. This year was no different with the Bring IT, Together 18 conference. Sadly, I came to the game with a cold that’s been hanging around for a week and a half now. It resulted in not being able to stay for the entire conference as I was afraid of falling asleep on the drive home. The fact that I’m typing this should be an indication that I was successful.
So, here are my reflections…
It was a challenge to attend the conference from Tuesday to Thursday rather than the Wednesday to Friday that I’ve done for years. I always seemed to be off track thinking it was one day and not another.
Monday
It’s a long drive made even longer by the construction on the 401. I had to stop and get the door prize for the Annual General Meeting. Now, I’m sure my friends in Hamilton know the town like the back of their hands. But, getting off The Linc and then back on by going around the block didn’t work out for me. I did manage to stay on “Upper” roads and finally got back on.
I’d had enough freeway driving by the time I got to St. Catharines so exited at the 406 to get down to Thorold Stone Road. It’s always a hoot to go through the tunnel and go under the Welland Canal. It’s a nice drive and gets you where you want to go easily.
Upon checking in, I headed over to the convention centre where the committee was hard at it. I helped out a bit but then met Vice-President Peter McAsh and we were off to do some work for the board. A break for a quick supper and we seemed to be ready to go.
Tuesday
The Workshop Day of the three day conference is always special. It’s just nice to roll up your sleeves and get to the learning. That, of course for me, means Minds on Media. It’s always a treat to see what Brenda Sherry and Peter Skillen have on the go. There was a great deal of coding this year and it was interesting to tour the circuit and see the different approaches to things. I was so pleased to see former colleagues at a MoM station. I spent waaaay too much time catching up!
In the afternoon, Stephen Hurley and I teamed up for the voicEd Radio session. Stephen led with his inclusive philosophy and had the group engaged in discussion. He was expecting a small number but there was a nice group about three times the expected size. We did our radio show live in front of the group and with the group. Normally, I’d be running around the room with the mobile microphone but that wouldn’t be wise with my cold so Stephen did the job. He got some great interaction from those in the audience.
For supper, Peter McAsh had connected with a former student who brought his boss to the conference. It was a wonderfully geeky conversation.
Wednesday
The main conference kicked off with a keynote presentation. Lots of energy, thoughts, and Dave Cormier had us thinking, particularly where Coding is concerned. My biggest takeaway was to investigate the word “prosocial”.
My Session! I took some time to put together a presentation with my thoughts about Hyperdocs. The big message that I wanted to deliver was that there was a whole world beyond doing a simple Google Doc with links in it. I had a great discussion at the end with a teacher whose board doesn’t allow access to Google Docs and so she appreciated how I showed how it could be done in Office 365 and highlighted Cal Armstrong’s post about using OneNote. It was a real treat to have a former student in the session too!
I thought I might sneak down to the Exhibit Hall and boy, was that a mistake! I ended up completely engaged in conversations there. There were actually people working for different companies so I had to catch up with that.
For lunch, it was time for the Annual General Meeting. It’s the best secret of the conference. Rather than brave the long food lines, we had our own station. I gave a quick overview of the 2017/2018 Board of Directors accomplishments. (It will be posted to the website at some point.) But, it was a real pleasure to hand out Life Membership to Presidents and Conference Chairs from the past. These people are real builders and we’re only able to do what we can do today thanks to their efforts.
Presidents
Chris Stephenson
Greg Weiler
Tim Hawes
Bill Mackenzie
Mark W. Carbone
Doug Peterson
Conference Chairs
Geoff Day
Brenda Sherry
Doug Peterson
Cyndie Jacobs
Harry Niezen
Jaclyn Calder
Harry Niezen gave us his final financial report and he’s leaving with the organization in great shape. Harry has been the rock of ECOO for so long for me. He will be missed and he contributed so much in his work for the organization.
The new Board of Directors, or at least those who had their names submitted on time was introduced.
It was time for another quick walk about the Exhibit Hall before a meeting of the new Board of Directors.
Peter McAsh, President
Andy Forgrave, Vice-President
Treasurer, unfilled
Secretary, current two candidates
Adele Stanfield, Director at Large
Jen Apgar, Director at Large
Ramona Meharg, Director at Large
Doug Peterson, Past President
The reception! A real highlight was ECOO giving out two Making IT Happen awards.
Aviva Dunsiger
Kim Gill
Then the reception and door prizes. I was informed by the new President that I wasn’t eligible. That was too bad. I could jump up and down as well as anyone if I won some of those terrific prizes.
Waterloo Region District School Board is implementing the Google CS First program and were fortunate to have Chris Stephenson there for a catch up meeting. I got invited to attend as an observer by Becky Rouse. It was a great discussion. The leaders are going deep with this with great questions and observations.
A quick burger for supper and then it was back to the Convention Centre for the showing of “To The Orcas, With Love”. I’ve blogged about that previously.
Thursday
I don’t know why I’m not kicking this cold. I’m not getting pretty good at the elbow bump rather than the handshake.
I had breakfast with the Kings – Max, Alana, and Tim. Tim gave me a preview of his presentation so I just had to attend.
“The 21st Century is 3d ready, are you?” – With all the discussion of high level processing with CGI, I was taking notes on my Chromebook. I could have asked Tim if there was something that would run on it but I would have been laughed out of the room. It was really interesting and Tim shared with us how he stays on top of things.
I had to sneak in to Emily Fitzpatrick’s session about Google Stuff. Just when I found a seat in the very packed ballroom, I got taken aside for a conversation. Grrrr.
Then, it was up to see Alana King’s session “Process and Portfolio: Digital sanity savers for tired teachers”. It was one of those presentations that never finish. She had way more information to share than time allotted. I’m looking forward to digging through her presentation. I thought she did an exemplary job of using Kahoot! for professional development.
At this point, I was starting to fade quickly so I figured I’d better hit the road in order to make it home. Needless to say, I was disappointed to do so; it’s the first time I’ve ever ducked out early but safety first.
And, like most conferences – great connections and way too many good sessions and too little time.
