Rory ​cast a considering look at the hanging menu over the counter. She’d already had three coffees today, but she still felt exhausted, not to mention tense. Filling out the last of her paperwork and nonsense for C.C.U. was driving her straight up the wall, and putting her to sleep. The exhaustion could have something to do with the nightmares that had persisted since her first encounter with the Candy Girl, now with added ✨variety✨after the night of the bonfire. But college admins had little patience for trauma, head wounds, or uncompleted paperwork days before the semester was due to start, so Rory had put a couple butterfly bandaids across the cut on her forehead, marched herself to Cherry Proper, and started downing coffees while she waded through the packets. 

She flipped through the last third of the papers she needed to get through and yup, okay, it was time for a fourth coffee. Her legs protested the sudden movement as she got up and headed to the counter. She was pleasantly surprised to see Alice, though it looked like she was clocking out- jesus, had she really been there long enough to not notice a shift change? “Hey,” Rory smiled at her, leaning against the counter. “You breakin out of here for the day?”
