McDonald's Happy Meal Despicable Me 2
Introduction: A Happy Meal is a kid's meal usually sold at the American fast food restaurant chain McDonald's since June 1979. A small toy or book is included with the food, both of which are usually contained in a red cardboard box with a yellow smiley face and the McDonald's logo. The packaging and toy are frequently part of a marketing tie-in to an existing television series, film or toyline. In this review, it's going to be Despicable Me 2 (DM2). DM2 was the first happy meal ever released regarding the Despicable Me franchise. The whole series includes Dave, Stuart, Jerry, Phil, Tim, Tom, Carl, and 4 Evil Purple Minions. They're released in 2013 the same year as the 2nd movie was released. Each toys got their own unique gimmicks such as grabbers, whistles, wind up and 2 kinds of electronics which you'll have to turn on the on-off switch.
Dave There're 3 versions of Dave the minion released for this series that is: Dave Gadget Grabber; claw gimmick by moving forward-backward on the gadget's pegs, Dave Banana Babbler; a voice gimmick by pulling the banana to make a voice. And Dave 2; a straw topper with voice gimmick. Unfortunately, I don't have Dave 2 along with Evil Minion 4 due to only Latin America release. There're 2 versions of Dave Banana Babbler which has different voice recording. The USA release has Dave laughing followed with speaking "Banana" while the Japanese release, he only babbles a laugh, which is why I got 2 Dave Banana Babbler. Gadget Grabber is seemingly only exclusive to this happy meal since there's no actual appearance of this gadget in the whole movies. But, it could probably appeared in some mini movies.
Stuart There're also 3 versions of Stuart the minion released for this series that is: Stuart Babbler Grabber; arm claw with voice gimmick, Stuart Light Up Grabber; arm claw with light gimmick. And Stuart Blaster (Fart Gun); a giggle squeak sound gimmick. I gotta admit the weapon sculpt is pretty top notch and accurate to the movie. Unlike Dave, all of Stuart toys gimmick has button on their back which you need to press them to do their gimmicks. Babbler grabber's has Stuart's gibberish voice. Unfortunately, I couldn't able to replace the battery of the light up grabber due to the 2 piece plastics was permanently glued.
Jerry There're 2 versions of Jerry the minion released for this series that is: Jerry Breakdancing; a wind up gimmick and Jerry Whizzer Whistle (Shrink Ray); a whistle gimmick by blowing the bottom part of the weapon.
Phil Phil the minion has only 1 variant release that is: Phil Jelly Whistle (Jelly Gun) which only available outside southeast Asia. Unlike Jerry Whizzer, the whistling sound is different and have to be performed by pulling and pushing the jelly part while blowing the whistle. I gotta admit, this is also cool looking since you can extend the jelly part like he's shooting a long range.
Tim There're 2 versions of Tim the minion released for this series that is: Tim Giggle Grabber; a claw arm gimmick with giggle sound that was produced from shaking the minion and Tim Giggling; giggle sound gimmick only. The giggle sound part came from an empty white tube that can only make a giggle sound by shaking them. Perhaps, Tim Giggling was one of the minion that was released in most regions except Japan, though there's still Tim Giggle Grabber in Japan.
Tom There're 2 versions of Tom the minion released for this series that is: Tom Googly Eyes Grabber; another claw thing like for arm feature but, added with moving eyes gimmick and Tom Babbler; a voice gimmick minion by pushing the button.
Carl Carl the minion only has 1 variant release that is: Carl's Rocket Skateboard which only available in Australia and Japan. The Skateboard is an accessory for him which has 4 pegs for Carl's foot attachments. This way, you can make variant kinds of footing position for Carl, and in the center footing position part you can also make the rear deck standing. Pretty interesting I gotta admit, I never expected this kind of gimmick. It's just shame he was only available in Japan and Australia, imo he got the most interesting gimmick compared to other minions.
Evil Purple Minion There're 5 variant of Evil Purple Minion released for this series that is: Evil Purple Minion Chomper; which has polyester hair materials and open mouth feature to chomp on something, Evil Purple Minion Noisemaker; another whistle blowing gimmick with noisemaker sound, Evil Purple Minion Giggling; another shake-shake the minion to produce giggle sound, Evil Purple Minion Babbler; another voice gimmick by pushing the button similar to Tom Babbler which has funny gibberish with crazy like tone and Evil Purple Minion 4; another straw topper with voice gimmick. Like Dave 2, I couldn't manage to get Evil Minion 4 due to Latin America release only. And Evil Purple Minion Babbler is only exclusive to Australia release.
Thoughts: Back in 2013, Happy Meal DM2 was a boom as they're sold real fast due to the big hype of the movie. At first, I have no interest on these yellow capsule thing but, when my brother and his wife introduced me with this, I became interested because of their well made quality for a happy meal toys so, I'm eager to collect them as well with my sister. Back in 2013 we only managed to get 7 of them from the Southeast Asia release (since we lived in Indonesia) but, after this we also collected the one from Minions and DM3 movies. As for Minions 2 and DM4… I'm not happy with how they're made anymore so, I completely lost my interest on collecting the new one. But instead, my intention on continuing hunting the old ones came back and this is it. We finally managed to complete most of them except the Latin America release. Carl's Rocket Skateboard and Jerry Whizzer Whistle are my personal favorite and the least one is 2 Tims since I don't really like how they're both made to be in sitting pose just to fit in the other Minion's height.

This isn’t your typical market report; it’s a lively narrative of tractors turning mundane fields into a lively jamboree.
The Tractor Square Dance:
Picture this: the Global Tractor Market, adorned in its market trends cowboy hat, is kicking up dust with a lively 5.52% CAGR. From a modest USD 69.68 billion in 2021, it’s strutting its stuff towards a whopping USD 115.74 billion by 2030. Talk about a line dance with numbers!
Spotlight on the Line Dancers:
In the crowded market barn, utility tractors take the lead, showing off their versatility like seasoned line dancers. They’re the two-stepping darlings of the agricultural world. Meanwhile, electric tractors sneak in with a rebel yell, proving that tractors can be green and cutting-edge.
The Tractor Rodeo —
Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Europe, and Beyond: As our tractors kick up their heels, Asia-Pacific grabs the lasso, showcasing its agricultural rodeo skills. Latin America, with its sizzling flair, emerges as the fastest-growing bull rider, shaking the market like a seasoned cowboy.

A lot of people are debating whether or not kpop idols should be speaking out about BLM and if black fans have a right to be angry if idols stay silent — which they do. As a white woman, I have no right or place to decide how these fans should feel or respond, but for those saying it doesn’t matter because kpop has nothing to do with BLM, let me give you a little history lesson on kpop and the genres of music it is heavily influenced by!
Korean pop music, gayo, or kpop, however you choose to refer to it as, can be traced back to 1885 when an American missionary began teaching American and British songs at schools. More western culture was introduced after the Korean War, when U.S. troops remained in South Korea. Modern kpop began to evolved in the 1990s when Korean pop musicals began to incorporate Europop and popular American music styles. It does have roots in traditional Korean music, however it is actually heavily influenced by western music and culture! Some of the biggest genres influences on kpop include rock, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, experimental, folk, country and classical music.
For the sake of this, I’m going to predominantly be focusing on jazz, R&B, rock, and hop hip.
Jazz originated in black communities in New Orleans in the late 19th century and has origins in blues, ragtime, spirituals, classical, and West African music. The 1920s was known as the Jazz Age, and jazz is considered by many to be America’s classical music and one of America’s original art forms. It has many derivative forms, including free jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, smooth jazz, Latin and Afro-Cuban Jazz. New Orleans jazz specifically blends sounds from brass-band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime, and blues. Swing was also a very popular derivative of jazz in the 1930s with musicians like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Jimmie Lunceford, and Count Basie.

In A Sentimental Mood by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane
Weather Bird by Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines
Tain’t What You Do (It’s The Way That You Do It) by Jimmie Lunceford
Splanky by Count Basie
Rhythm and blues (R&B) developed in urban Black communities in the United States during the 1940s. Some of its stylistic origins are jazz, blues, spirituals, gospel, and boogie-woogie. Since the 1980s it shifted into a new style younger generations are currently most familiar with, referred to as contemporary R&B, which blends rhythm and blues with pop, soul, funk, disco, hip hop, and electronic music. Some of the most influential R&B artists are older artists like Prince, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Beyoncé, and Mariah Carey to newer artists like Rihanna, Ne-Yo, and The Weeknd.
When Doves Cry by Prince
Superstition by Stevie Wonder
Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson
Respect by Aretha Franklin
I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) by Whitney Houston
I’m Every Woman by Chaka Khan
Partition by Beyoncé
Hero by Mariah Carey
Needed Me by Rhianna
So Sick by Ne-Yo
Blinding Lights by The Weeknd
Rock music originated in the United States in the late 1940s, and began as “rock and roll.” Rock and roll’s biggest influences are black musical genres, two of the biggest being blues and R&B. Blues originated in the Deep South in the 1870s from African musical traditions, spirituals, and African-American work songs (this is the white guilt way of saying what they actually are Slave Songs). Blues is arguably the most influential genre in modern western music as some of its derivative forms include rock, ragtime, R&B, jazz, and country. Some of the biggest rock and roll artists include Chuck Berry, Nat King Cole, the Crows, the Penguins, and the Turbans. Even Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock and Roll” would say some of his biggest influences were B. B. King, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, Ivory Joe Hunter, and Fats Domino, all Black musicians.
Johnny B. Good by Chuck Berry
L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole
Gee by The Crows
Earth Angel (You Will Be Mine) by The Penguins
I’ll Always Watch Over You by The Turbans
The Thrill is Gone by B.B. King and Tracy Chapman
That’s All Right by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup
Since I Met You Baby by Ivory Joe Hunter
Ain’t That a Shame by Fats Domino
Finally, hip hop and rap music which developed by inner-city Black communities living in the Bronx, NYC, in the 1970s. Its origins are styles of funk, disco, electronic music, dub, R&B, reggae, dancehall, jazz, spoken and performance poetry, scat singing, and talking blues. Hip hop has four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching turntables (records), breakdancing, and graffiti writing. Due to poverty and lack of acceptance outside of ghetto neighborhoods, however, hip hop did not officially get recorded for radio or television until 1979. Hip hop has derived and has many subgenres since the 70s and now includes freestyle rap, gangsta rap, hardcore hip hop, mumble rap, trap, experimental hip hop, and more. Some major influential artists include Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, LL Cool J, Ice-T, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G., Lil Jon, Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, B.o.B., Drake, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper and so so so many more.

So Good by B.o.B.
Started From the Bottom by Drake
Feeling Myself by Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé
HUMBLE. by Kendrick Lamar
This Is America by Childish Gambino
No Problem by Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne, and 2 Chainz
There is nothing you can say to tell me there isn’t Black influence on kpop. BTS had a whole multi-episode show where they travel to LA to train under “hip-hop tutors” Coolio, the artist behind Gangsta’s Paradise, and Warren G, a g-funk producer. Haechan calls Michael Jackson his favorite artist and inspiration. Almost all kpop groups have a rap line who “shockingly” LIKE BLACK RAPPERS AND ARTISTS. And it isn’t unheard of for kpop idols / groups to support and promote fundraising and campaigns. I’m not here to attack kpop, I’m here to explain why people can be upset by their silence.
Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio and L.V.
Regulate by Warren G and Nate Dogg
While I am aware many of idols’ / groups’ accounts are not run personally or by their management, the silence and lack of support can hurt. I can understand why black fans want to see their idols they have been supporting support them too, especially when those idols have been, in a sense, profiting off of their culture. I can understand why black fans want their idols to support them not getting murdered in the street by police who are supposed to protect them.
For anyone saying that “this is America’s problem” and “leave it to America to figure out,” World War II happened because Hitler was committing genocide on Jewish people and it took ALL of the Allies, not just anti-nazi Germans, to take down Hitler and the Axis powers. The police and the government are committing genocide on black people. Systematic racism is a disease that the world, not just America, needs to fight.
Silence doesn’t make you an ally, silence makes you an accomplice.

The Birth of Hip Hop
The hip hop culture has its roots in the Bronx, borough of New York, in the early 70s. At that time, no movement really existed. Many scattered performances were developing in the streets of the Bronx with no global leader.
DJ Kool Herc, Jamaican–American disk jockey, started organizing dance parties at his home. His parties soon spread throughout the Bronx. Quickly attracting a lot of young people, Kool Kerc made a name in the district, organizing more and more parties, indoor and outdoor, always in the Bronx. DJ Disco Wiz and Casanova Fly, Herc’s henchmen, were hacking the electric power of the street lights in order to party in the basket fields of the Bronx.
This is the flyer of the Back to School Jam that took place August 11, 1973 at Kool Herc’s place. 1520 Sedgwick Avenue is an apartment building that was recognized on July 2007 as the birthplace of Hip-Hop. This is where the first parties organized by Kool Herc took place. It has been honored in June 2017 with an award. The moderate rent building is now standing on the newly inaugurated Hip Hop Boulevard, marking where it all began.
youtube
1- The Deejaying
Kool Herc created a new music with 2 turntables playing Disco music, hard Funk and other James Brown records combined together. By playing the drum beats of the songs alternately, he enhanced “the break”. This is the birth of Hip Hop Music. Without delay, a lot of young artists started Deejaying and creating new techniques around this new culture.
In these new artists, Theodore Livingston. In 1975, he is only twelve, practicing turntabling in his bedroom when his mother yells at him from another room. The young artist, now known as Grand Wizzard Theodore, puts his hand on the spinning record to stop the music and causes the “shigi” sound. So the invention of the scratching technique was an accident !
If the origin of the name Hip Hop is often disputed, some say that Keef Cowboy, member of the groupe Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, teased a military-friend by faux-marching to the sound hip-hop-hip-hop. Or the name might come from Afrika Bambaataa, African-American DJ who largely influenced the creation of the Hip Hop movement. At that time, the gangs made the law in the Bronx. Violence and brutality were at every corner. Lance Taylor (Afrika Bambaataa), who used to be a member of the gang P.O.W.E.R and the leader of the Black Spades, started an Anti-Violence Movement (now known as the Zulu Nation). He soon understood that using the new performances of the youth would help canalize their energy. So, inspired by DJ Kool Herc, he started hosting parties in the city. Turntabling, organizing dance contests, inviting MCs to animate the show, welcoming graffiti writers…
The four main pillars of hip hop appeared.
2- The Breakdancing
While DJs like Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa began building music on Kool Kerc’s innovations, the breakdown inspires bboys and bgirls. Breakdance is a street dance largely based on drums and funk music. This dance holds a major part in the urban culture and is full of athletic moves. This discipline also thrived in the 70s with bboys like Trixie or Dancing Doug. If he was already dancing before DJ parties were organized in the Bronx, Lauree Myers, better known as Trixie affirms :
“When we did go to Herc's parties that's when I took it to another level.”
youtube
3- The Spraywriting
Third element composing Hip Hop, the Graffiti, or Spraywriting. It is a form of artistic expression that primarily involves illegally painting walls in the streets and trains in the city. There are many different types and styles of Graffitis, ranging from words to drawings. This activity is the most controversial of Hip Hop elements. Widely considered as vandalists, the graffiti artists need to draw fast and run fast. Generally ran in public places, this business often involves running from the police, especially when a huge part of the graffitis were spelling “A.C.A.B” (All Cops Are Bastards).
Graffiti already exists for a long time, the first “graffitos” dating from the ancient Egypt or Roman Empire. But the Graffiti we are talking about here doesn’t originate from New York but from Philadelphia. In the 1960s, the first known graffiti writers Cornbread and Cool Earl used black markers to tag their nicknames on all public property throughout the city. In 1968, the rail transport between Philadelphia and New York intensifies. The wagons are moving frames, exposing the paintings from one city to the other. A train to success. In 1970, Topcat 126 copies their practices and brings graffiti tagging into the big apple.
At this time, a bunch of buildings are popping up every week in the city. The youth wants to take over on these new walls and spaces. In the 70s, many issues of racial and social inequality were already taking place. The non white youth adopts this art as an expressive form of rebellion. One of the street art pioneers, Quik, explains to Widewalls :
“Graffiti was intended as a “voice” to be heard; as we sought a broader audience than our immediate community.”
In the first generation of graffiti artists, we can also cite Futura 2000 or Phase 2 who also largely influenced the discipline for decades. Everyone invents new styles, trying to make their tags more unique and noticeable. LEE 163 joins his letters together. Later comes the Stencil Graffiti with Blek le Rat in Paris. Groups such as United Graffiti Artists and the Fabulous Five start working together to make more elaborated canvas and to escape the scenes more discreetly.
This was all before graffiti became fashionable. At that time, graffiti artists were chased by the authorities. Only ten years later, a painting of Jean-Michel Basquiat, who started as a graffiti artist, was sold for over $110 Million.
4- The MCing
Last but not least, the rapping. If MCs (Masters of Ceremony) were originally at parties to animate the show and cheer the dancers, they were also here to communicate. To talk about the problems faced by the african-american community. Dancing and spraywriting were a great way to express the feelings, but rapping had no equal. Rap has its name from the slang word meaning “conversation”. Or maybe it stands for Rhythm And Poetry. Certainly both.
The 3 major components of MCing are the content, the flow and the cadence. The three are essential to deliver a message and get the listener to feel your melody and bounce their head. Rapping is the rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes and wordplay usually over a beat. Rapping has its roots in Africa. Centuries before Hip Hop music existed, the griots (traditional communicator) of West Africa were delivering stories rhythmically, over drums.
At his beginnings, Grandmaster Flash was so focussed on his mix, breaks and scratching skills that he forgot one of the essentials. The mic. The occasion for some to propose their services. One day, Flash met Cowboy, an MC as charismatic as his word.
His entry on Flash’s scene inspired two brothers : Melle Mel and Kid Creole. Creole was really good at freestyling, but little was Mel who decided to work his texts before the shows. Quickly, his sharp feather offset his ad lib skills. He becomes the leader of Flash’s new vocal trio and inspires others to work on their texts, ad style figures and play with words.
The Last Poets were the first group to throw an album out in 1970. It coupled spare funk and aggressive delivery, combined with socially-conscious word. This is the basis of MCing. Social and racial awareness are the foundation to the vocal performance in Hip Hop.
It is hard to cover this whole rap period without talking about Kool G Rap, the Godfather of Gangster Rap, the Sugarhill Gang, first group to ever throw a rap album, the Treacherous Three, MC Hammer, the Funky 4+1, the Cold Crush Brothers…
youtube
Widely inspired by jazz, soul, funk and disco, the Hip Hop movement is multicolor. Created and lead by african-americans, it has a root in Africa, one in Latin America, one in Asia, another one in Europa… Hip Hop is a multicolor culture that assembles the people.
According to Kurtis Blow, an MC from the outset who started as a Master of Ceremony for Flash’s parties :
“I'm a firm believer that hip hop and rap is so malleable; you can shape it in any form. We have these fusions like rock n roll rap, reggae rap, country and western rap”
This is how Hip Hop, now a truly international cultural movement, had its start.
PEACE, UNITY, LOVE AND HAVING FUN

From skateboarding to surfing, 6 new Olympics sports will appear at the Tokyo Games
An remarkable 6 brand-new sports will be objected to at the Tokyo Olympics. That’s the most brand-new additions to an Olympics considering that 1920, when 11 sports got in the mix.
The “new” label Is a bit flexible. Two of the sports contributed to the Tokyo Games — the carefully associated baseball and softball — were included at the Olympics as just recently as 2008, prior to being dropped in 2012 and 2016. But the other 4 are total newbies: karate, skateboarding, sport climbing, and browsing. All 6 will sign up with Olympic favorites like track and field, swimming, and gymnastics.
For the inbound sports, addition in the Olympics uses an essential international spotlight — and most importantly, the chance to grow.
“The Olympics are the highest, largest, most visible stage for any sport. Surfing being in the Olympic Games will be great for surfing. We’ll be allowed to communicate our message and our lifestyle to billions of people,” stated Fernando Aguerre, president of the International Surfing Association. “It’s developing surfing, taking it to Africa, to Asia, to Latin America — to areas where there are incredible waves,” however there aren’t as numerous internet users.
There’s simply one catch: These 6 new-for-Tokyo sports won’t all become part of the Paris Summer Games in 2024. Skateboarding, sport climbing, and browsing will be included in 2024, with the browsing competitors situated in Tahiti, almost 10,000 miles far from Paris. The Paris Games will likewise include breakdancing for the very first time ever. But baseball, softball, and karate will be overlooked.
Yet come 2028 in Los Angeles, the Summer Games will likely re-expand to include baseball and softball once again. Whether breakdancing will endure to 2028 is anybody’s guess.
This unlimited shuffling of occasions all comes from an effort developed to upgrade and revamp the Olympics. Called “Agenda 2020,” the program was embraced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2014. It intends to offer specific host cities more control over which occasions are medal sports. The objective, in general, is to make the Olympics less of a leviathan and a financial boondoggle.
Unfortunately, the shuffling likewise results in unpredictability for a variety of sports, which may be consisted of for one Olympics and after that cut from the next. The range of occasions available will maybe supply more daring options for Olympics audiences who like seeing sports they may not have the ability to see quickly. (When was the last time you saw competitive karate broadcast in the United States?) Yet, provided just how much stability and financial flexibility is approved by a sport ending up being an irreversible part of the Olympics, that unpredictability can be ravaging.
The divide in between “core sports” and whatever else at the Olympics

The Summer Games will constantly include a variety of “core sports.” These sports have long histories within the Olympics, and they are so carefully connected with the occasion that the Olympics would feel unusual without, state, gymnastics or track and field or swimming.
An IOC working group recommended that the variety of core sports be set at 25 in 2013, with weight-lifting, fumbling, and modern-day pentathlon completing for slots 24 and 25 because number.
At the time, the group at first suggested that battling be dropped from the program. It was viewed as a sport vulnerable to doping scandals, with inefficient management stopping working to keep corruption in check. Yet simply a couple of weeks later on, the danger versus battling abated as the IOC’s complete ballot subscription chose to keep the sport in the video games. Wrestling has actually belonged to the lineup at every Olympics considering that and has yet to be dropped from the core sports program. In addition, golf and rugby 7s, initially provided at Rio in 2016, have actually continued to make it for addition at subsequent Olympics. Thus, the Summer Games sure appear like they have 28 core sports, not 25. But the IOC keeps feinting towards bumping that number back to 25, most likely to keep everyone on their finest habits.
The hazards versus battling are a fine example of how that IOC pressure works to externally police the sports federations that it acknowledges.
“When wrestling was potentially going to be dropped from the Olympics, it was a huge shock. The wrestling federation [United World Wrestling, which oversees the sport at the games] got rid of its leadership and got new people in,” stated Sydney Bauer, an independent reporter who has actually covered the Olympics for 9 years. “And the IOC had a vote at its [main] session, and then just put wrestling back in the core sports. So nothing changed. This was an excuse for the IOC to use its political pressure to change the Wrestling Federation.”
At any rate, if you’re a core sport, you’re in theory constantly in the Olympics. (The IOC can alter whatever it desires whenever it desires through a vote, however let’s presume for a 2nd that that isn’t real.) What if you’re not a core sport, though? How do you get onto the program?
Before each Olympics, the arranging committee from each host city limits a list of propositions from IOC-recognized sports (more on this in a 2nd) to a shortlist of occasions it believes it has capability to host. The host city then even more limits that list to a quote that it sends to the IOC for approval. Tokyo at first thought about 9 sports — the 6 currently discussed (baseball, karate, skateboarding, softball, sport climbing, and browsing), plus squash, wushu, and roller sports — prior to narrowing that list to the 6 that will be included in the Tokyo Games.
(Perhaps complicated matters: Baseball and softball have actually combined their arranging bodies into one group considering that the 2008 Olympics, so while the IOC counts baseball-softball as one sport, “the Tokyo Olympics considered eight sports for inclusion, including baseball-softball” doesn’t make a lots of sense, which is why I’m describing the 2 as different sports.)
By the method, put one out for squash, a continuous also-ran at the Olympics in spite of the sport having actually grown over years so that it has a robust worldwide existence. “Squash missed out again, which was a huge shock,” stated Bauer. “They’ve been doing everything right but can’t get on the program.”
The Paris Olympics, on the other hand, chose not to consist of baseball, softball, or karate from their shortlist of 7 sports, winding up with the 4 formerly discussed: breakdancing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and browsing.
There’s likewise a historic precedent of presenting brand-new sports at the Olympics based upon what’s popular in your area. From 1912 to 1992, occasions called “demonstration sports” were consisted of in the Olympics as a chance to enable audiences to take a look at sports popular in the cities hosting the Games. Sometimes, those sports even went on to end up being complete Olympic sports. In 1984, for example, Los Angeles provided presentations of baseball and tennis, both of which were later on included as medal occasions at future Games.
The huge distinction in between the present system and the presentation sports system is that presentation sports weren’t complete medal occasions. Now, every sport that makes it into the video games sends its victors house with glossy brand-new hardware. If you win a baseball gold medal in the 2020 Olympics, you’re a gold medalist, even if baseball is never ever dipped into the Games once again.
Want to be consisted of in the Olympics? Being popular with the kids will sure assist you out.

Becoming an IOC-recognized sport is a long procedure crowded with administration, however in essence, it includes constructing out nationwide, local, and worldwide companies that can then be gathered under the banner of “IOC-recognized sport.”
Essentially, great deals of nations require to enjoy your sport, which will offer you a professional athlete base and an audience to hold local occasions, which will then enable you to broaden to worldwide occasions, which will ideally ultimately land your occasion in the Olympics. The IOC has a list of requirements it marks off for addition, however those requirements are rather ambiguous, as you can see gone over here by the worldwide federation governing the sport of muaythai, which was approved provisionary acknowledgment by the IOC simply this year.
There’s likewise a great deal of glad-handing and politicking associated with this procedure. Building the ideal connections within the IOC is a must, as is browsing numerous other sports federations and competitors.
Yet you likely have an upper hand as soon as you’re an acknowledged sport if you either attract youths or to the people of the nation hosting that present Olympic Games.
In specific, there’s been a noticable focus in cases have actually been included just recently on discovering sports that will attract “the youths.” The IOC has actually progressively utilized the Youth Olympics, a constantly beleaguered occasion for professional athletes in between 14 and 18 years of ages, as a method to try occasions that may warrant Olympic addition. Breakdancing, for example, will make its Olympics launching in 2024 after an effective trial run at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. (The Youth Olympics are held every 4 years however on a rotating schedule, so the Winter Youth Olympics take place in years when there is a Summer Olympics and vice versa.)
The usage of the Youth Olympics to try brand-new sports is a trademark, Bauer stated, of the IOC under present president Thomas Bach, who took workplace in 2013.
“It’s an ethos of, ‘Okay, we need to appeal to young people. We need young millennials and Gen Z to be interested in the Olympics, and they don’t care about wrestling. They don’t care about weightlifting. They don’t care about track and field. So how can we get young people interested, but also not change everything we’ve done with these core sports because they’re very old Federations and make a lot of money?’” she stated.
Bach has actually started various efforts to improve the Games and make them more versatile. Even with 4 sports contributed to the 2024 Games, for example, the total variety of occasions will decrease from 339 to 329, with the majority of the cuts originating from the boxing and weight-lifting programs.
What’s more, the IOC’s efforts to consist of occasions that will enable complete parity in between males’s and females’s occasions have actually enhanced substantially under Bach. The variety of females completing in Tokyo need to be 48.8 percent of the overall variety of completing professional athletes, and the 2024 Games intend to strike half on the dot. That’s well up from 38.2 percent at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
The versatility established under Bach likewise permits specific sports to be experimented with one Olympics at a time. If they show extremely popular, they may be included future Games — specifically if they’re sports that don’t need structure pricey centers. (Surfing, for instance, primarily simply needs having an ocean.)
This method likewise permits acknowledged sports a chance to contend to be consisted of in Games hosted by nations where they are popular. Baseball, softball, browsing, and skateboarding appear like cinches to be contributed to the Los Angeles Games in 2028 due to the fact that all 4 sports are extremely popular in the United States and in California more particularly. (Aguerre explains that California is the house of browsing and skateboarding culture worldwide.)
Any sport that is popular in America (and some sports that are not however that are growing more popular all over the world) may bid too. Already, cricket (which is not extremely popular in the United States however is growing in stature, specifically in locations with big South Asian immigrant populations) and flag football(!!) are competing to be contributed to the 2028 Games. Other sports with a footprint in the United States, such as supreme Frisbee (referred to as “world flying disc” globally) may take a crack at too, need to they contend for addition.
Finally, these more current reforms enable shifts in the long time stranglehold that occasions popular in Europe have actually had on the Olympics. Baseball defended years and years to be consisted of, and its battles have actually been extensively credited to the truth that while the sport is exceptionally popular in East Asia and the Americas, it’s not popular at all in Western Europe.
The case versus baseball in the Olympics is somewhat more nuanced than “people in Europe don’t like it.” Baseball is a sport played just by males, and its previous Olympics additions were not commercially effective. The combination of baseball and softball into one federation looked after the very first issue; an effective occasion in Tokyo might look after the 2nd. Baseball is likewise making excellent strides globally, with federations spinning up all over the world in locations like South Africa, Israel, and Brazil.
Still, the pro-Europe predisposition at the Olympics was genuine — and the IOC is taking actions to fight that issue too.
“The IOC has been on a big blitz to make its membership not just be Western European,” Bauer stated. “The IOC is huge now. It’s up to around 105 members. There’s an IOC member now from Afghanistan. There’s one from Bhutan. There’s one from Palau. These are countries that are represented now because they’re trying to create geographic diversity, where in the past, if you weren’t from Western Europe, you were being held back because [the IOC is] based in Switzerland.”
In completion, even if your sport is picked for the Olympics, there’s no warranty your occasion will be a success. That lies with forces beyond anybody’s control. But Aguerre, the ISA president, has high wish for browsing in Tokyo.
“The biggest thing that made me so happy was realizing that there are going to be waves [in Tokyo], plenty of waves,” he stated, pointing out regional projections. “The only uncertainty is: Are there going to be waves? And we’re gonna have a week of waves. It’s nice.”

2020
Week 50: December 7-December 13
7: The International Olympic Committee announces that they will be adding competitive breakdancing to the 2024 Paris games. Georgia, having completed their third recount, again re-certifies their election results. Joe Biden is still the winner. Again. And Florida police raid the home of Rebekah Jones, a data scientist who alleges she was fired from the Department of Health after refusing to manipulate COVID-19 information.
Fun fact - the second person to receive the vaccine was an 81-year-old man named William Shakespeare - Jacob King/Pool
8: The United Kingdom begins rolling out the Pfizer vaccine. 90-year-old Margaret Keenan received the first dose - “I feel so privileged”, she said. May Parsons, the nurse who administered her shot, is a Filipino-British nurse. The first person to receive the vaccination in the United States will be an immigrant nurse from Jamaica. The first person to be vaccinated in Canada is a Filipino-Canadian homecare worker named Anita Quidangen. One of the things that feels very ‘lost’ in our conversations about COVID is, like, just an acknowledgement that our western medical services wouldn’t function without immigrants. For a long time the Canadian healthcare system has relied on these women’s labour - while often making it difficult to gain citizenship or help their families emigrate. In the United States, one third of nurses ~245 who have died of the virus were Filipino-America.
9: More people die of COVID, today, than died during the attacks of 9/11. And people refuse to stop going on cruises, apparently, because the Royal Caribbean vessel The Quantum of the Seas, carrying 1680 guests and nearly the same number of crew, is forced to sail back to Singapore after a passenger tests positive for the coronavirus. New outbreaks of the H5N8 avian flu are detected at two chicken farms in Japan - as well as a duck farm in France.
10: Bhutan overwhelmingly passes a parliamentary bill decriminalizing homosexuality. 63 lawmakers voted for the bill and six abstained - there were no ‘nay’ votes. The law requires consent from the king before it becomes law. Tashi Tsheten, director of the LGBTQ+ group Rainbow Bhutan calls it a victory of the country’s queer community. As he points out to journalists, there is something especially momentous - and just plain special - about the bill being passed on Human Rights Day.
11: Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies passes a bill that will legalize abortion in the country. The bill will be approved by the country’s senate later this month, making it the third country in Latin America to legalize the medical procedure. Women take to the street to celebrate. In Nigeria, at least 300 boys were abducted at gunpoint from a boarding school in Kankara. They will be rescued one week later, following successful negotiations with their kidnappers, and will be reunited with their overjoyed parents on December 18.
12: It’s another blow for the Trump legal team - the Supreme Court tosses a Texas lawsuit that would have nullified election results in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan and Wisconsin - in clear defiance of the voters who delivered those results. 126 Republican lawmakers had signed a letter of support for the case. A disappointed Trump tweets that the Supreme Court “really let us down” and failed to display any wisdom or courage. The New York Times calls the Court’s decision a “ blunt rebuke to Republican leaders in Congress and the states who were willing to damage American democracy by embracing a partisan power grab over a free and fair election.” Pro-Trump supporters, again, clamber to the streets in Washington to demonstrate their fealty, clashing with police and counter protesters. Four are stabbed in the chaotic violence.
13: The Cleveland Indians announce they will be changing their name after the 2021 season. Good.

Irene Cara
Irene Cara (born Irene Cara Escalera; March 18, 1959) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She is best known for her roles as title character Sparkle Williams in the 1976 film Sparkle and Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame, earning her a Golden Globe nomination, and her recording of the song "Fame" became an international hit. Cara won an Academy Award in 1984 in the category of Best Original Song for co-writing "Flashdance... What a Feeling", which also became an international hit.
Early life
Cara was born in The Bronx, New York City, the youngest of five children. Her father, Gaspar Escalera, a factory worker and retired saxophonist, was Afro-Puerto Rican, and her mother, Louise, a cinema usher, was an American of Cuban descent. Cara has two sisters and two brothers.
At the age of three, Irene Cara was one of five finalists for the "Little Miss America" pageant. She began to play the piano by ear, then studied music, acting, and dance seriously, first having dance lessons, aged five. Her performing career started on Spanish-language television, professionally singing and dancing. She made early TV appearances on the Original Amateur Hour (singing in Spanish) and Johnny Carson's The Tonight Show. In 1971–72, aged 13, she was a regular on PBS's educational program The Electric Company. As a child, Cara recorded a Latin-market Spanish-language record and an English Christmas album. She also appeared in a major concert tribute to Duke Ellington that also featured Stevie Wonder, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Roberta Flack.
Career
Cara appeared in on-and off-Broadway theatrical shows including the musicals Ain't Misbehavin', The Me Nobody Knows (which won an Obie Award), Maggie Flynn opposite Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy, and Via Galactica with Raúl Juliá.
Cara was the original Daisy Allen on the 1970s daytime serial Love of Life. Next came her role as Angela in romance/thriller Aaron Loves Angela, followed by her portrayal of the title character in Sparkle. Television brought Cara international acclaim for serious dramatic roles in two outstanding mini-series, Roots: The Next Generations and Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones.
John Willis' Screen World, Vol. 28, named her one of twelve "Promising New Actors of 1976"; that same year, a readers' poll in Right On! magazine named her Top Actress.
Cara graduated from the Professional Children's School in Manhattan.
Fame and international acclaim
The 1980 hit movie Fame, directed by Alan Parker, catapulted Irene Cara to stardom. Cara was originally cast as a dancer, but when producers David Da Silva and Alan Marshall and screenwriter Christopher Gore heard her voice, they re-wrote the role of Coco Hernandez. As Coco Hernandez, she sang both the title song "Fame" and the film's other single, "Out Here on My Own." These songs helped make the film's soundtrack a chart-topping, multi-platinum album. Further history was made at the Academy Awards that year: it was the first time two songs from the same film were nominated in the same category and both sung by the same artist. Thus, Cara had the opportunity to be one of the few singers to perform more than one song at the Oscar ceremony; "Fame," written by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford, won the award that year.
Cara earned Grammy nominations in 1980 for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, as well as a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Musical. Billboard named her Top New Single Artist, while Cashbox Magazine awarded her both Most Promising Female Vocalist and Top Female Vocalist.
Asked by Fame TV series' producers to reprise her role as Coco Hernandez, she declined so as to focus her attention on her recording career. As a result, Erica Gimpel assumed the role.
Post-Fame career
Cara was slated to star in her own sitcom, Irene, on NBC in 1981. Even though the pilot aired and received favorable reviews, the network did not pick it up for its fall season. It also starred veteran performers Kaye Ballard and Teddy Wilson, as well as newcomers Julia Duffy and Keenen Ivory Wayans.
In 1983, Cara appeared as herself in the film D.C. Cab, which is a film about a group of cabbies. The movie stars Mr. T. One of the characters, Tyrone played by Charlie Barnett, is an obsessed Cara fan who decorated his Checker Cab as a shrine to her. Her contribution to the film's soundtrack, "The Dream (Hold on To Your Dream)" played over the closing credits of the film, and proved to be a minor hit, peaking at No. 37 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1984.
In 1982, Cara earned the Image Award for Best Actress when she co-starred with Diahann Carroll and Rosalind Cash in the NBC Movie of the Week, Maya Angelou's Sister, Sister. Cara portrayed Myrlie Evers-Williams in the PBS TV movie about civil rights leader Medgar Evers, For Us the Living: The Medgar Evers Story; and earned an NAACP Image Award Best Actress nomination. She also appeared in 1982's Killing 'em Softly.
In addition to her music and film work, Cara also continued to perform in live theatre during this period. In the summer of 1980, she briefly played the role of Dorothy in The Wiz on tour, in a role that Stephanie Mills had first portrayed in the original Broadway production. Coincidentally, Cara and Mills had shared the stage together as children in the original 1968 Broadway musical Maggie Flynn, starring Shirley Jones and Jack Cassidy, in which both young girls played Civil War orphans.
In 1983, Cara reached the peak of her music career with the title song for the movie Flashdance: "Flashdance... What A Feeling", which she co-wrote with Giorgio Moroder and Keith Forsey. Cara penned the lyrics to the song with Keith Forsey while riding in a car in New York heading to the studio to record it; Moroder composed the music.
Cara admitted later that she was initially reluctant to work with Giorgio Moroder because she had no wish to invite further comparisons with another artist who worked with Moroder, Donna Summer. But the collaboration paid off and became a hit in several countries, garnering numerous accolades for Cara. She won the 1983 Academy Award for Best Song (Oscar), 1984 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, 1984 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, and American Music Awards for Best R&B Female Artist and Best Pop Single of the Year.
"Flashdance..." was re-recorded by Cara twice. The first time was in 1995 as a track in the original soundtrack for the movie "The Full Monty"; the second time was in 2002, as a duet she recorded with Swiss artist DJ BoBo.
In 1984, she was in the comedic thriller City Heat, in which she co-starred opposite Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds and sang the standards "Embraceable You" and "Get Happy." She also co-wrote the theme song "City Heat", which was sung by the jazz vocalist Joe Williams. In May of that year she scored her final Top 40 hit with "Breakdance" going to #8. The follow up, "You Were Made for Me" reached #78 that summer but then she never charted on the Hot 100 again. In 1985, Cara co-starred with Tatum O'Neal in Certain Fury, an exploitation underachiever about two troubled young women who flee a court hearing and are mistaken for killers. In 1986, Cara appeared in the film Busted Up. She also provided the voice of Snow White in the unofficial sequel to Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Filmation's Happily Ever After, in 1993. That same year, she appeared as Mary Magdalene in the record-breaking anniversary tour of Jesus Christ Superstar opposite Ted Neeley, Carl Anderson, and Dennis DeYoung.
Along with her career in acting and hit singles, Cara released several albums: Anyone Can See in 1982, What A Feelin' in 1983, and Carasmatic in 1987, the most successful of these being What A Feelin. In 1985 she collaborated with the Hispanic group Hermanos in the song "Cantaré, cantarás," in which she sings a solo segment with the Spanish opera singer Plácido Domingo. She also released a compilation of Eurodance singles in the mid to late 1990s entitled Precarious 90's. Cara recently contributed a dance single, titled "Forever My Love", to the compilation album titled Gay Happening Vol. 12, in 2006.
Cara has also worked as a backup vocalist for Vicki Sue Robinson, Lou Reed, George Duke, Oleta Adams, and Evelyn "Champagne" King. Cara toured Europe and Asia throughout the 1990s, scoring several modest dance hits on European charts, but no US chart hits. Cara received two prestigious honors for her career in March 2004, with her induction into the Ciboney Cafe's Hall of Fame and a Lifetime Achievement Award presented at the sixth annual Prestige Awards.
In June 2005, Cara won the third round of the NBC television series Hit Me, Baby, One More Time, performing "Flashdance (What a Feeling)" and covered Anastacia's song "I'm Outta Love" with her current all-female band, Hot Caramel. At the 2006 AFL Grand Final in Melbourne, Cara performed "Flashdance (What a Feeling)" as an opener to the pre-match entertainment.
As of 2016, Cara divides her residence between New Port Richey, Florida and Santa Fe, New Mexico. She works with her band Hot Caramel, which she formed in 1999. Their album called Irene Cara Presents Hot Caramel was released on April 4, 2011. Cara appeared in season 2 of CMT's reality show Gone Country,.
Personal life
Cara married stuntman Conrad Palmisano in Los Angeles in April 1986 and they divorced in 1991.

Introduction
Since its inception in the 1970’s Hip Hop has had many influences. Due to the worldwide phenomenon it has become, overtime Hip Hop has been able to take many forms, and be influenced by many different factions and cultures. In my thought papers I specifically chose four aspects of the art that contributed in their own ways. My first thought paper focused particularly on the more forgotten aspects of the original Hip Hop which were Breakdancing and Graffiti. Although Mc’s and Dj’s went on to encompass what we today tend to associate with Hop Hop and rap music, Breakdancing and Graffiti played hugely significant roles at the time. With Breakdancing we say a large contribution from the latin community with Puerto Ricans providing a big influence as well. Breakdancing was the movement and dance associated with the Hip Hop, it was the visualization of the music through dance. Graffiti although arguably Hip Hop played a huge role for the culture at the time. Although graffiti is illegal, with rising violence and crime running rampant through inner city black communities, it was at least better than selling drugs or shooting people. Overall this represent how even the less remembered aspects of Hip Hop played such a huge role in communities.
My second thought paper focused on gangsta rap and the crack era. the 80’s roles around and along with it came crack and gangsta rap combining for a boom in the rap industry and the destruction of many in the black community. Gangsta Rap was the raw and over exaggerated commentary on life in the hood that originated on the west coast. And due to the epidemic of crack which was taking place in these communities rappers were now rapping about it. Overall although gangsta rap was hugely successful, the crack epidemic was truly one of the worst in modern African American History.
However when I really examined the the dynamic of Hip Hop in these two eras, with graffiti and breakdancing in the 70’s and gangsta rap and crack in the 80’s I saw a very intriguing pattern. The response of white America. They literally picked and chose the aspects of Black and Hip Hop culture they liked and simply hated and demonized the rest. In the 70’s the larger white community jumped on the breakdancing bandwagon and completely commercialized it till its ultimate demise, then with graffiti the demonized and even mad campaigns to destroy it. And of course it was no different in the 80’s. White American’s loved gangsta rap even though they had no experience in the places it was coming from, yet they responded to the crack epidemic seeking to destroy the lives of anyone involved. Overall it was the single most interesting conclusions I came to from both of my papers.
