my wee love letter to toronto. i wasn't particularly fond of it when i lived there but absence makes the heart grow fungus. as they say.

specifically an ode to the house where i got married <3 tho i feel kinda bad for using my old landlord's name for cae's shitty landlord. boris was a decent guy

loved all the comments on twister fic that were like ‘wow oklahoma, where i live!’ waiting impatiently for anyone familiar w toronto to read and say hey….i know that neighbourhood

cobbled together cae's project by borrowing from a colleague's interests. chose phenomenology bc coms students Hate It which i think is funny

i watched the scott pilgrim anime over the holiday break which did lead to me rereading the comics + consequently stealing a couple jokes

in my mind welt has had a metoidioplasty but it didn’t seem like the kind of thing he’d explain or would be important to include in the a/n. but it is important to meee

anyway this ended up being much more a story about being in your twenties and how stupid and messy that is than a ship fic, so i'm glad some people like it... it feels particularly personal, even though the only things i pulled from my own life were locations. i guess bc i'm looking back fondly on a time that's gone forever...?

always makes me nervous to step outside my niche (10k smut fics w a sprinkling of character study) but this was a fun one to write

single mom is a term that has such a presence in sam’s vocabulary that she has come to think of it as a synonym for self.  even with a ring’s weight on her left hand come comfortable  &  a second last name appended to her own with a a dash  &  to ruby’s with a simple scrawl at the bottom of a stack of papers, it lingers like an old scar she can touch her fingers to.  

still … 

living it again is a shock she isn’t prepared to face.  the slow integration of alex into her life was never quite so obvious when it came in steps  (  a drawer here, a section of a closet there, a third place setting at the table  ) as it is now in her absence.  single parent means reaching her arm to a cold slab of sheets that hasn’t ever been turned down in the night.  it means a ducati covered up  &  gathering dust in the garage.  it means muscle memory plucking up a trio of forks when she only needs two.  

it means thinking of alex during die hard marathons during the holiday season  &  mcclane whining at the front door for days on end.  

she hasn’t had the heart to take the ring off yet, not while tipping her nose to alex’s favorite jacket still smells like her body wash  &  shampoo, while there’s still a second toothbrush tucked into the holder in the bathroom.  

ruby’s trying to make it seem like things are okay, fitting herself into the spot where the couch cushion is weathered  &  worn from alex’s frame tucked up next to sam during movie night.  she’s talking about college, the future, has scaled back the wild driving lessons on the road to take to it with a calm discipline bearing no shades of the bright spark of a girl souped up on the excitement of learning to throw a punch without breaking her thumb.  

it’s not any easier going to game night, where no one can manufacture the perfect counterbalance of sternness  &  humor to fill the void.   everything feels empty.  the house is too big.  al’s dive bar is too quiet.  national city is suffocating once more.  

&  so, when lena gently offers out the opportunity to go back to metropolis with a CEO stamped next to her name plate  …  sam considers it.  whereas national city in the wake of reign’s destruction had been a stifling, crushing reminder of everything she’d done, it’s now host to a home of memories, of laughter, of love that’s just … gone.  ruby gets it, sad-eyed, taking a picture of their bucket list wall with alex’s additions scribbled at the bottom.  but they pack everything up  ;  they leave the bike behind. mcclane keeps his head out the window the whole way across the country.  

they unpack their belongings to a new brownstone bigger than the last.  &  even though it’s a new place, a new start, sam leaves a corner of the closet for a BNL t-shirt, for alex’s leather jacket. every christmas eve, she, ruby,  &  mcclane huddle up on the couch to watch die hard.    she keeps the ring on.

Money - Mystery Skulls I've loved Mystery Skulls for a long-ass time, and this is something I love to blast on the way home from a craptastic day working within capitalism.

Something To It - Great Big Sea I grew up with the album this off of and I know this song by heart. Good for a melancholy mood and definitely softer than the songs GBS is known for.

Ornamented Melancholy - City Girl I think I've bought every album City Girl has put out. I almost exclusively listen to them when writing (unless it's an action scene). Just very chill lofi stuff that doesn't really break up my flow.

My Boy Builds Coffins (Acoustic) - Florence + The Machine A fairly rare version of the song. I think I have copies of all three versions 😅 (I really love Florence + The Machine)

Pavlov's Bell - Aimee Mann Loved this song since Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Black Balloon - Goo Goo Dolls It's a toss up between this and Iris for my favourite Goo Goo Dolls song. That whole album is a work of art tbh.

Gasoline - Jann Arden I. Love. This. Song. It's also on the Anakin playlist.

The Old Apartment - Barenaked Ladies I was worried BNL wasn't going to show up on this list and they came in right at the end. My favourite band of all time. One of my favourite songs of all time. BROKE INTO THE OLD APARTMENT!!!
