Like any good OC gremlin, I have playlists for all my favs. The one I’ll put before the cut, though, is Kinesis’ theme song, written by Andrew Huang. He legit wrote it for Evil Plan. It’s both about my OC and it has a slick guitar theme that is just….EVERYTHING. It is the best character theme I have and I adore it.

my wee love letter to toronto. i wasn't particularly fond of it when i lived there but absence makes the heart grow fungus. as they say.

specifically an ode to the house where i got married <3 tho i feel kinda bad for using my old landlord's name for cae's shitty landlord. boris was a decent guy

single mom is a term that has such a presence in sam’s vocabulary that she has come to think of it as a synonym for self.  even with a ring’s weight on her left hand come comfortable  &  a second last name appended to her own with a a dash  &  to ruby’s with a simple scrawl at the bottom of a stack of papers, it lingers like an old scar she can touch her fingers to.  

still … 

living it again is a shock she isn’t prepared to face.  the slow integration of alex into her life was never quite so obvious when it came in steps  (  a drawer here, a section of a closet there, a third place setting at the table  ) as it is now in her absence.  single parent means reaching her arm to a cold slab of sheets that hasn’t ever been turned down in the night.  it means a ducati covered up  &  gathering dust in the garage.  it means muscle memory plucking up a trio of forks when she only needs two.  

it means thinking of alex during die hard marathons during the holiday season  &  mcclane whining at the front door for days on end.  

she hasn’t had the heart to take the ring off yet, not while tipping her nose to alex’s favorite jacket still smells like her body wash  &  shampoo, while there’s still a second toothbrush tucked into the holder in the bathroom.  

ruby’s trying to make it seem like things are okay, fitting herself into the spot where the couch cushion is weathered  &  worn from alex’s frame tucked up next to sam during movie night.  she’s talking about college, the future, has scaled back the wild driving lessons on the road to take to it with a calm discipline bearing no shades of the bright spark of a girl souped up on the excitement of learning to throw a punch without breaking her thumb.  

it’s not any easier going to game night, where no one can manufacture the perfect counterbalance of sternness  &  humor to fill the void.   everything feels empty.  the house is too big.  al’s dive bar is too quiet.  national city is suffocating once more.  

&  so, when lena gently offers out the opportunity to go back to metropolis with a CEO stamped next to her name plate  …  sam considers it.  whereas national city in the wake of reign’s destruction had been a stifling, crushing reminder of everything she’d done, it’s now host to a home of memories, of laughter, of love that’s just … gone.  ruby gets it, sad-eyed, taking a picture of their bucket list wall with alex’s additions scribbled at the bottom.  but they pack everything up  ;  they leave the bike behind. mcclane keeps his head out the window the whole way across the country.  

they unpack their belongings to a new brownstone bigger than the last.  &  even though it’s a new place, a new start, sam leaves a corner of the closet for a BNL t-shirt, for alex’s leather jacket. every christmas eve, she, ruby,  &  mcclane huddle up on the couch to watch die hard.    she keeps the ring on.

Something To It - Great Big Sea I grew up with the album this off of and I know this song by heart. Good for a melancholy mood and definitely softer than the songs GBS is known for.

Ornamented Melancholy - City Girl I think I've bought every album City Girl has put out. I almost exclusively listen to them when writing (unless it's an action scene). Just very chill lofi stuff that doesn't really break up my flow.

My Boy Builds Coffins (Acoustic) - Florence + The Machine A fairly rare version of the song. I think I have copies of all three versions 😅 (I really love Florence + The Machine)

Congratulations to the Barenaked Ladies!

Everybody has that one band that gets them through some tough times. The band you listen to on a loop. The band that you know every word to every song. The band that you will love forever no matter what. 

That band for me is Canada’s Barenaked Ladies. They helped me get through a terrible depression many years ago. Their music and their personalities were infectious. They are known for up beat songs like “One Week”, “If I Had a $1,000,000”, and the theme song to TV’s “The Big Bang Theory.” But they had also have songs like “Break Your Heart”, “War on Drugs”, and “What A Good Boy”. Songs that make you think and touch you. 

The band went through a change when lead singer Steven Page left the band about 9 years ago.  And as sad I was to see him go, I was happy that the rest of the guys, Ed Robertson, Tyler Stewart, Jim Creeggan, and Kevin Hearn, continued on. They’ve continued on to make great music and continue to put on amazing live shows.

Tonight Barenaked Ladies, and a returning Steven Page, were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during tonight’s Juno awards in Canada. 

Seeing them give their speeches and then seeing them close the show is something I will never forget. It got me choked up. And yes a few tears were shed. I was so proud of them. It reminded me how much their music changed me. How it took me out of a very negative frame of mind and made me happier. 

Sorry to have rambled. I’m a bit emotional. But I just wanted to try and put into words how much they mean to me. 

Congratulations BNL on your much deserved honor!

David had always heard this song; his mom loved BNL and always had it playing, ever since he was a little kid. He sort of let the words wash over him, the way anything that’s so familiar it becomes background music will. But when he was 16, 3 years after he’d slept through Jasper’s death and 2 weeks after his father had left home for the last time, he was cooking dinner and this song came on, and for the first he really, actually listened to it.His mom came home an hour and a half later to find dinner hopelessly burnt and her son curled up on the kitchen floor, sobbing. She booked a therapist appointment shortly after, convinced it was about his father’s leaving.It wasn’t.

On the sudden topic of character playlists,,, Do you have any certain songs that you really find match up with any of your characters that you'd like to share? O3O (I'm super curious!)

Like any good OC gremlin, I have playlists for all my favs. The one I’ll put before the cut, though, is Kinesis’ theme song, written by Andrew Huang. He legit wrote it for Evil Plan. It’s both about my OC and it has a slick guitar theme that is just….EVERYTHING. It is the best character theme I have and I adore it.Some of these are for my friends’ OCs too. “Phoenix” by Slaughter Beach, Dog - this song is so special to me, and no sentence i could write can do the justice listening does.

“Call and Answer” by Barenaked Ladies - it’s been! what’s a playlist without some BNL? Call And Answer is a deep cut off their 1998 album Stunt and explains the inner machinations of the most complex of relationships. This one doesn’t sound like One Week.

"Big Trucks” by Pedro the Lion - i chose the acoustic version of this song off their 1999 album The Only Reason I Feel Secure because of the intimacy of the guitars and vocals. 

“Weathered” by The Hotelier - one of my favorites from the Hotelier comes off their 2011 album It Never Goes Out. any emo song that opens up with harmonica is a-ok in my book.

“Motion Picture Soundtrack” by Radiohead - sue me, Radiohead is one of my favorite bands. i’ve always liked soft endings to albums, and this one has always struck me as one of the best, leaving you with the haunting line “i will see you in the next life...”
