I’m reading this book for black girls like me and it is making me feel so much. This little black girl was adopted into a white family, and then her family moves to a different state so she has to leave behind her best friend, another black girl adopted into a white family — the only person who understood her experience. The kids at her new school were shitty and racist. After another girl calls her the n word (hard r), her mom pulls her and her sister out of school and her sister resents her for it. Her mom starts home schooling them and when she finds a home school group for them to join, the girl asks if there are any other black children, the mom says “I don’t see why color has to matter so much.” The mom clearly loves her, she and the father are flawed people but they try hard and they treat their biological (white) daughter and adopted (black daughter) equally. But they are so “color blind” that they struggle to understand that their daughter feels very alone and like she sticks out everywhere she goes. This is a children’s book (like a middle grade novel, but it reads more YA at times) but it’s really hitting me hard as an adult. You can mean well and still fuck up. You can care and still say or do the wrong thing. It’s not wrong to want to spend time around people who understand your experiences.

I’m listening to the audiobook of the third Bridgerton book in light of the announcement that the show is skipping it (at least for now). And I think that’s a good decision. I’m about halfway through this, and I just don’t think i like Benedict very much right now lol. I didn’t like Daphne or Anthony much at times during their books, but I understood why they were doing the stupid shit they were doing. Not really the case with Benedict. He’s just being a fucking bro lol.

This agatha christie book, the Hallowe’en party, is wild. There’s one definite murder and several possible murders. There’s a will and a foreign au pair who has inherited a fortune. The girl was accused of forging the will, and one of the witnesses (who saw the person the will belonged to writing it out) has just suggested that the foreign heir might have hypnotized the old woman #britishlogic (after admitting she doesn’t like foreigners lol). Like I said… wild lol. I have like 100 pages of story left but I feel like there’s enough plot to go to fill 150 pages, so I’m excited to see how it all plays out.
#I haven’t seen the David suchet poirot episode of this one so I’m experiencing this anew 😄#bre reads agatha christie#bre’s bootleg bookblr

I’m listening to this audiobook of a poirot story someone wrote to be in the style of agatha christie… it’s the first in a series. It’s not like… bad lol, but it’s also not great. I think the pacing is weird mostly. If you want it to sound like Agatha Christie you need to pace it similarly to how she would have, and this is just so bloated. The audiobook is due back to the library soon so I’m trying to finish it, and even on 1.75x speed it just feels interminable (and I think this narrator would be hard to understand on 2x speed).

Still reading Henry Huggins. He’s entered his dog Ribsy into a dog show, and he gave him a nice long bath with his mother’s shampoo. When they were standing in the ring waiting for things to start, Ribsy went and started rolling over in the dirt. He really is my Pluto 😭
#this is a super cute book and I’m enjoying it very much#but the fact that Ribsy is reminding me so much of my boy is making this just so dear to me#bre reads beverly cleary#bre’s bootleg bookblr

I normally listen to audiobooks on 1.5x speed but I switched to 2x towards the end of this one and I think I may have become a more powerful person as a result
#i know some people actually understand the book better on 2x than on 1x#it’s not so much an issue of understanding but of paying attention lol#bre’s bootleg bookblr#daily oversharing

I’m listening to the first bridgerton book on audiobook. Idk if I’m going to continue with this series but I really wanted to compare it to the show, so I grabbed it from the library with overdrive. I feel like the show is better in many ways but in some ways the book is. I’m only half-ish through it though.

I’m reading this book called The Mystery of Mrs. Christie, which is a fictionalization of Agatha Christie’s disappearance — kind of 1920s Christie style mystery meets Gone Girl (I’m enjoying it!). We’ve also been watching a lot of Poirot. For those reasons, we’ve been thinking and talking a lot about Agatha Christie. My friend was telling me how after Agatha married the handsome young archaeologist, she would jokingly say that being married to an archaeologist was great because the older she got the more fascinating he found her. And I love that for her, lol.

Books I’m hoping to focus on next: audiobooks of Queen’s Shadow by EK Johnston (a Star Wars book) and Interview with a Vampire (I’ve been on the waitlist for this from the library for moooonths), Pride by Ibi Zoboi, and The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by some Mormon woman. I also have a lesbian Chuck Tingle story and another silly free werewolf gay romance that I could probably zoom through pretty quickly. The audiobooks and the Twilight thing are all from the library so I need to prioritize them but I honestly kinda want to just read a bsc book because it’s been a hot minute since I’ve done that. And because I’ve been lucky about finding books at good prices I have several that I haven’t read yet.
#books#I have several ‘bre reads...’ tags but none for just like random book posts like this#let me see...#how about#bre’s bootleg bookblr#that makes me laugh I’m going with it lol#daily oversharing

I just finished the audiobook of Queen’s Shadow, this Star Wars novel about Padme which takes place between episodes 1 and 2. God fucking bless Star Wars novelists for giving depth to characters (like Padme and her handmaidens) that were done dirty by canon. Novelists, comics writers and artists, and the people who make clone wars and rebels are mvps. Anyways, this was my first Star Wars audiobook, and I love how they had sound effects and the sw score and all that. I really liked the book itself too. Padme at one point is talking to one of the handmaidens about relationships and love and how she’s always kept her heart so guarded... she says “I’m afraid that if someone really tried to break through, I would let them... and it would be catastrophic.” And OOF. I relate to a painful degree. That line took me out. Also Padme’s sister has a newborn baby in this book, and all I can think is that Luke and Leia have at least one cousin. I want them to know their cousin(s)! Plus Padme says that being a single parent is fully normal on Coruscant... and there was also a cool exchange about how it’s seen as important on Coruscant to call people what they want you to call them and if someone ever changes their name, you use their new name. Which I just thought was nice.
