Sting tails are a fascinating and mysterious creature. They are found in all oceans of the world, and their venomous tails can deliver a painful and even deadly sting. The transparent blue of their tails is a mesmerizing sight, and it has inspired many artists and designers.
A sting tails t-shirt print is a unique and eye-catching way to show your love of these creatures. It is also a great way to start a conversation about sting tails and their importance to the marine ecosystem.
Here are a few ideas for sting tails t-shirt prints:
A realistic image of a sting tail, with its transparent blue tail and venomous spines.

hi!! im working on a story that takes place at a 2012 public high school - the issue with that is that i was not in high school in 2012 lmao. do you have any tips on how to keep it feeling realistic?
Well, neither was I!! But here are some tips:
Define Your General Setting
Sure, high school has a different feel compared to an average town/city setting. However, it is still a part of the bigger community, and will be impacted by external factors.
What part of the world are your writing about? What's the general economy like? What's the most common occupation of the kid's parents? What's the prevailing fashion/art/music style?
Your teens will be impacted by the popular culture and trends of the time, so start by outlining the general setting!
Fashion
I think this is where schools have changed the most. There are going to be some overlaps between early 2010s and late 2000s, so if you think in the direction of Y2K fashion, it should fit.
On a general note, I think 2010s fashion was vibrant, with lots of colors and flashy items...
Side fringes and backcombed/straightened hair were still very popular
most girls had huge messy sock buns on top of their heads
boys had the Justin Bieber cut.
Jack Wills and Hollister were pretty popular, and a lot of girls had a Paul's Boutique jacket and a Jane Norman bag for their PE kit (or one of the Hollister bags with a topless guy on).
Converse were universally cool, and there were lots of imitation brands.
Open flannel shirt over a t-shirt was a pretty popular outfit.
Skinny jeans and band t-shirts
bright chunky rubber band bracelets.
Vans were cool among the alternative kids.
Getting different colours on your braces was cool.
Most of the boys had at least one of those t-shirts with the buttons and the mismatched cuffs.
School-uniform-wise, short ties with big fat knots were cool, and hard kids would pluck a stripe or two out of their tie.
Tucking in shirts was initially not cool, then it became cool to tuck at the front but not the back.
Lots of boys wore black trainers, and lots of girls wore those ballet pumps.
Girls doing their lips with their foundation, with a thick ring of black eyeliner and spidery clumpy mascara - and having a visible orange line where your foundation met your neck was common.
Multiple ear piercings were popular with the alternative crowd
Belly button piercings were big for girls
Just search up some pictures on Google, you should get plenty of "Early 2010s teen fashion starter pack"
Social Media
Smartphones were already popular, and with the introduction of Snapchat(2011) and Instagram(2010), the social media hype was just starting to boom
Facebook and Twitter were popular - basically everyone was on it
TikTok(2016) and Discord(2015) didn't exist yet
Pictochat
Phones were allowed in the classroom, but phones/laptops weren't an important part of school work like it is now.
Digital Devices
Phones-wise, most people had pretty basic dumbphones (although they were just called mobiles back then), and not everyone carried them all the time
Blackberry (BBM), Nokia, LG Cholate, iPhone if you're rich enough
Most kids were on PAYG phones, so you'd run out of credit sometimes (i.e. no more calls or texts) and have to go to a physical shop to top up. Nobody really had data, and there was always a moment of panic if you accidentally opened the web browser on your phone because it was so expensive. Wifi became a thing around 2012.
Nintendo DSes: Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs
iPods or another MP3 Player
Slag
Slang-wise, Urban Dictionary is a good resource.
Fleek, peng and YOLO were popular with some crowds. Leetspeak was a thing online, especially in nerdy communities. Emoji were starting to take off
rawr" (or "rawr means I love you in dinosaur") and "xD" as a laughing face
Music
One Direction, Jedward, Katy Perry, Carly Rae Jepson, Justin Bieber, JLS, Little Mix, Beyonce, Paramour, My Chemical Romance, Bring Me The Horizon, Black Veil Brides, Ke$ha, Eminem, The Killers, OMI, Gotye, Bruno Mars, Macklemore, Skrillex, deadmau5, blink-182, Green Day, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Lana Del Rey.
Fandom Stuff
Twilight was huge, then Hunger Games.
Harry Potter was everywhere all the time, people would go to midnight releases for the books and movies.
High School Musical was popular, then that crowd migrated to Glee and Mean Girls.
The Olympics were in London in 2012
Other Stuff
Reese's peanut butter cups, Marshmallow Fluff, Nerds, etc.
Veganism wasn't well-known, but still there were a few
Lots of casual homophbia, kids jsut genuinely not knowing rather than truly hateful towards it
Here are some movie suggestions, that shows school like in early-mid 2010s quite well:
Easy A
The Duff
LOL
For YA Novels - Be Timeless
Before you start doing any of the things above, remember this if you're writing a YA novel: The key of this genre is to feel somewhat timless, taking readers back to their high school years no matter when and where they've gone through it.
High school is the phase where many people feel awkward, unsure of themselves, feeling special in their own head but knowing that they're not really.
And it's not like the problems just disappear when we hit adult life. A major reason why YA novels are so popular is that they address themes that are repeatedly felt by the general human being, often in a such a direct, straightforward way that provides vicarious satisfaction.

My 2024 Trend Predictions
Disclaimer! Trends are bullshit!!! What’s “in” and “out” is totally subjective and fashion is an art form, public opinion and new crazes have no impact on the real art and following trends is your choice. Trend cycles are sped up so violently by capitalism and fast fashion as a beast, fashion is supposed to be fun.
This list is my opinions as a 19 year old boy who spends too much time online and read too much vogue as a kid. I am not an expert, I just like to talk.
Indie Sleaze
I’m already seeing this one happening, the colored tights under shorts, the fur vests, I think especially with the popularity of saltburn and it’s aesthetics we’ll see a lot more of this in the beginning of this new year. Graphic t-shirts with ironic phrases were already big in 2023, glitter and silver makeup especially is on the rise, this is already happening and I am excited. I fucking love indie sleaze. Nostalgia is a huge impact on trend cycles, I think we’ll see a lot of 2000 and 2010s trends seeing as the generations looking up to teens following those trends in their childhoods and longing to live those lifestyles are now old enough to embrace that dream. I think for people more into alternative fashion this will translate into a emo and scene resurgence that I’ve already been seeing.
Twee
This is based off the nostalgia again, I think a lot of folks who gravitate more towards cottage core-esque fashions and aesthetics are going to start embracing twee. 2024 is going to be a year of embracing cringe and quirky “individualism”, it is the year of the manic pixie dream girl, is is the year of pissing off boring men with “annoying” femininity. I think cutesy patterns, lace, buttons, diy big jewelry and hair accessories are gonna be on the rise. I can see girls making videos about their craft nights on tiktok already. Skater skirts, Peter Pan collars, bangs, Jess from new girl eat your heart out.
“Humble” Classy/reverse flexing
People are getting tired of the insistence on being “classy”, I think in 2024 we’re going to see a lot of celebrities trying to seem humble and average and down to earth. I think we’ll see a lot of brand mixing, super expensive designer paired with cheap every day brands, I think we’ll see this in clothes and especially in food. I think we’ll see a lot of branding for fast food popping up alongside that “classy” aesthetic. I think that this will also show up more with thrifting becoming popular again amongst influencers but specifically thrifting for designer/up cycling designer (badly). They’ll sell it under a veil of sustainability, it’ll be infuriatingly shallow.
Lightning Round
Pom poms
Feathers (especially hair feathers)
Fur in mens fashion
Metallic makeup
Grungy makeup looks
Full coverage foundations/matte foundations
Peplums (somehow)
Skinny jeans
Jewel toned nails
Short nails
Dainty chokers
Statement earrings
Wood/leather jewelry
Flats
Vintage anime merch
2000s/2010s brand mascots
Mod style
70s resurgence moments throughout (this is wistful thinking I just love the fashion of the 70s)
My Trend Timeline
End of winter into spring- indie sleazing our way into the new year, I think it’s a versatile enough fashion that can be easily executed with what people already have from previous trends in 2023. Everything is set up rolling out into the warmer months.
Summer- I think this is going to be prime time “trashy” early 2000s party girl kind of time. We got a little of it last summer but I think it’s going to really hit this year. Whale tails, chunky low lights, messy makeup, bedazzled jeans. I think we’ll also see some keywest kitten esque looks from the preppier side of things, lots of bright colors and fun jewelry. I think we’ll also get a lot of vintage Americana moments, once again we got a bit of it last year and I think it’ll be brought back.
Fall- peak twee season, especially nearing the holidays. I think we’re gonna see a lot of rich color this fall too, jewel tones, beautiful deep greens and reds, not a lot in clothing but I think definitely in makeup and accessories. Around this time I think the preppier leaning folks will get back into skinny jeans. I think vintage graphic Ts will also get popular around this time, something easy but still interesting. Men’s fashion doesn’t cycle through as quickly so I think the kind of 70s aesthetics I’ve seen a lot of dudes into will continue (but I think they’ll also get in on the indie sleaze, I think for mens fashion it will stick around for fall). I think we’ll see more textures, lace, fur, leather, etc.
Winter- this is right around when I think the forced “casually classy” down to earth bs will start. Twee will continue amongst a smaller group and we’ll see a lot of cute diy gifts and stuff for the holidays, this will also impact the up cycling I think we’ll see from influencers and celebrities. I think hyper-feminine aesthetics will really kick back up, Pom poms, whites and pinks, skirts and big sweaters, Ralph Lauren teddy bears everywhere. It’ll be contrasted by a new interest in grungy/intense makeup looks, thin brows and dark lips, messy eyes, glitter.
I’m very excited for these all to turn out totally wrong and for me to make a fool of myself! But who gives a shit, I’m just saying this all for fun. Happy new year everyone!

PJO MUSIC AU PART TWO;
I’ve decided to just use this part to explain the band “Ride Or Die” lol
“Ride or Die” is a punk-rock band consisting of Clarisse, Beckendorf, Silena, Connor, and Travis. They started playing during highschool, but didn’t get famous until their sophomore year at college. A year later, they got a record deal at Lyre Records.
CLARISSE;
-The lead singer.
-Like, she might not be the nicest person ever, but her vocals are FIRE
-Was actually taught to sing to classical music, but when she was 13, she discovered Punk-Rock, and she’s never looked back.
-The red bandana is her brand. Even in fancy parties she’ll somehow have it incorporated into her outfit.
- Has several thirst-traps of her and beckendorf circling around social media.
- Her voice is so growly and shouty, but her vibrato makes it to where-UGH she’s so good.
- Shes currently dating a cameraman named Chris.
- Shes known Silena ever since 4th grade, so they’re really tight knit.
-To the point where all their fans think they’re dating lmao.
BECKENDORF;
- He’s basically the main vocalist too?
-Clarisse and him sing background for each other, and they switch who sings songs all the time.
-Basically the Dóberman of the band
-in the way that he looks super intimidating, but he’s actually so sweet and polite.
-Is dating Silena
-Never had voice lessons until he joined the band.
-It was great before but now it’s BETTER.
- He used to post covers on YouTube that are still floating around. He cringes when it comes on his page lmao.
- His Mom actually helped get them out there, since she owns a relatively popular radio station.
- The only person who’s allowed to pick on his band mates are him.
SILENA;
-Shes the lyricist, but she also serves as the guitarist.
-Shes always written songs-ever since 2nd grade.
-Gets most of the flack online out of all the band members, because she’s very feminine so people are always arguing she seems out of place with the rock regime the band have going on.
-She pays no attention.
-Just to spite them she’ll wear the most girly outfit ever with punk accessories.
-Petty is her middle name btw.
-Learned acoustic guitar from her Uncle, then when she got into rock, switched to electric guitar.
-Nicest, sweetest person you’ll ever meet.
-Every fan who visits her loves her immediately.
-Wears lots of different vintage hairstyles(victory rolls, an updo, fluffy starlet hair etc)
CONNOR;
-Everyone is constantly getting him and his brother mixed up all the time.
-Anyways, he’s the drummer.
-He was the most hyperactive kid ever, so to stop him from going to Paris and back every time he turned around, his Dad gave him a junior drum set when he was eight.
-He’s never looked back since.
- Is the comedian of the group.
- Pulls random people from the crowd to do stupid shit during their concerts.
-LIVES for crowd participation.
-Has a weenie dog named Frank and he always jokes that he’s their unofficial mascot.
- Certified t-shirt cannon dealer. Every show.
- Lightens the mood whenever things get depressing.
-Says the most random, out of pocket shit that has nothing to do with anything in the conversation.
-“What if humans had blinkers?”
TRAVIS;
-the keytarist
-He makes all the special effects for their shows.
-He also deals with the merch because he likes making shit.
-Plays all sorts of practical pranks on his band mates, and the audience.
-The fuck boy of the band sort of? He’s known for getting with lots of people because he’s hot with commitment issues.
-Wears the most explicitly dumb shirts ever.
- Can be sweet at times though.
-For example, he’s the one who suggested the band name, because Clarisse, Silena, Connor, and Beckendorf were his “ride or die” people.
-Has a bird named Mr.Parrot
-Even though it’s not a parrot.
-He’s at home though, because Travis would never DARE to make him go on tour with him. Poor baby would be so crowded.
- Animal enthusiast. He loves any and all critters.
-Before he was in a band, wanted to make an animal shelter chain

TRANS MALE PASSING PROTIPS
Targeted specifically at trans men who have not begun medical transition, but for anyone. Of course, this is just what works for me and everyone is different.
Shorts that fall mid thigh and are baggy can work really well to make a more masculine figure. This is a trendy style with cis men, and if they are looser on your thighs you can look more rectangular. Basketball shorts are always fine, but for bigger people can end up sticking to your thighs and making you look like a masc lesbian. Looking like a masc lesbian is so so common guys this is what we are trying to avoid. See here for reference
2. WALK WITH YOUR SHOULDERS. Walk like your shoulders are the widest part of your body. Move them kinda forward and backward. Watch a video of a man walking next to a woman for context on what I mean. Women walk with their hips, and it makes all the difference for you in someone's head. Practice in the mirror before doing it so you don't look like a fool.
3. Hair!!!! I know you guys don't want to let go of the 2020 fluffy boi haircut and that is ok. If you don't want a skin fade short haircut, there are other options. Also, if you belong to a subculture, like punk/emo/whatever else there is, look at male styles as it can be very different than what is normally accepted ( for example, men have long hair in metal subculture, you can style it like them). In general, hair is very meticulous, as for some people too short is masc lesbian and too long is woman.
This kind of hair can do wonders. For men of color/curly hair people, if you are not out locs are a very good option as they are typically read as masculine but are gender neutral. Afros, braids, even skin fades with a lot of hair at the top can read feminine. Another style option could be short cornrows that end at the neck, twists, or a fade with less hair at the top like this.
I am not black, so I cannot speak for how this would be read in a black community, but this is how, from my experience, I would view the hairstyles. Sorry if this is not appropriate. Also, I am not here to tell you not to dye your hair. It can work if you style it with masculine clothes and are dressed in a specific style like emo or scene or something. Do what you will with that.
4. If there is ANY peach fuzz on your face, make the most of it. I know I have high testosterone levels naturally, so I grow facial hair a little, but if there is enough to dye it, dye it. If there is like barely any, if its not visible in the mirror if you're really looking (not INSPECTING), it's probably not worth it, and that is fine. use your judgement, and if it is not enough, just shave it. It's better to look clean shaven than desperate for face hair. Eyebrows, mustache hair, sideburns can all be darkened with eyeshadow, brow brushes, and just for men beard dye.
5. LAYERS. I know you guys have seen this one before. Flannels, button ups over black t-shirts, zip up hoodies. It might get a little hot, but it covers your sweat stains anyways. I promise guys it helps so much with shoulders, hips, boobs, it makes you look more masculine. Don't get that ugly ass red and black checkered one though. Think if you would see a masc lesbian wearing it and use your best judgement. I heart layers.
6. Pants. Woah. Pants. I HATE pants I know you fat trans men get me. Old navy women's jeans...and you guys won't like this one...are actually pretty good. SPECIFICALLY the sky high wide leg ones. Get those a size up and cuff them, wear them low on your waist, perfect. Other than that, jeans are shit. I don't really waste my time with men's pants anymore because of my hips but cargos are great, baggy sweats with the band at the bottom are great, PJ pants good, dress pants are a struggle but I've heard dickies work well for people with a smaller body. Not sure though. My tactic is I go to a thrift store for hours and try on all their pants, then find similar ones online or take pictures of the brand for the ones I like and find more.
7. Accessories and jewelry. Iffy. Anything you could describe as dainty, if it's not a family thing or important to you, probably not. Friendship bracelets are good, pendants are good, earrings depends on where you are and what you are wearing. Studs in men are common where I am, so I wear them. Observe the cis men at your disposal. Accessories, bags don't really matter unless they're like the strawberry hot topic mini bags. Don't get those at all those are fugly. Mini bags are not great in general, just better to get something else. Watches are heavily loved here they look very male and also you have the time always even a cheap watch is fine just not a woman's watch. It has to be a men's watch. You can tell when it is a woman's watch don't get those. Nail polish is fine no one cares, it's more popular now with boys. Especially if you're a little girly pop already. Of course that also depends on your environment.
8. Stance. Sitting with your ankle on your knee is comfortable and way more masculine than crossing your legs. Confidence. Fake it until you make it because cis men are so arrogant guys. This is what I mean btw
9. Don't be afraid of being feminine. Don't give up being yourself in order to be masculine. Your happiness matters the most. Love you bye, I'll update this if I think of anything else.

Mavericks: Chapter 1
[Visual: The screen of the infomercial was playing on zooms out to reveal the dark room. Only this time the lights turn on suddenly to reveal a high-school classroom.
It’s a fairly well-decorated, sleek, and colorful space, with other touches, like a digital holographic screen displaying the title MAVERICKS. Students look mildly disinterested as a young boy, about 5’5 feet tall and 16 years old, with a light skin tone and brown eye color and a black hairstyle (think like Hotaro Oreki) and wearing a white t-shirt with gray jeans, is barely keeping himself awake when his teacher, a fairly lanky and skinny man, addresses the class and turns off the screen the infomercial was playing on.
Teacher:
“So everyone, what were your opinions on the ‘Welcome to Aurora’ video?”
[Visual: The students respond randomly and uncommitted, their answers drowned out by the overall feeling of extreme boredom]
Teacher (annoyed):
“Maybe I forgot to say you all have an assignment due on this.”
[Visual: The class suddenly panics and scrambles to get out pens and notepads as the teacher sends the classwork notification to their devices. The boy, now aware of his surroundings, looks at the assignment on his pad in confusion.]
Boy:
“Uhh, Mr. Tompson?”
Tompson:
“Yes, Conner?”
David Conner:
“Why is there a question asking what brand of clothing the Guide wore?”
Tompson:
“To make sure you all were paying attention to the video. After all, I need to make sure all of you are listening. This is a test, by the way, so your overall score in this class will be affected. Good luck”
[Visual: As Mr Tompson walks off, David stares blanky at his paper for a good few seconds, before trying to get the attention of his classmate and friend Dan West, an African-American 5’7 tall and 16 years old, with thin glasses, military cut hair, a turtleneck sweater, and black shorts, who turns to him looking slightly annoyed.]
Dan:
“(sighs) Yeah?”
David:
“Look, Dan, I’m sorry. I know you’re bus-”
Dan:
“Not really. I already finished this up yesterday.”
David:
“...We had this since yesterday?”
Dan:
“Yep. Tompson just didn’t tell us.”
David (annoyed):
“Of course he didn’t. How did you even do it without the video?”
Dan:
“Searched it up online. I can show you the video, but we have to be sneaky about it”
David:
“Forget it, you know he’s gonna catch us. Just help me find the answers. Please.”
Dan:
“(stares at David for a minute, looking slightly conflicted, before sighing) “Move a bit closer.”
[Visual: David hands his pad to Dan, who begins selecting the correct answers]
Dan:
“Dave, I’ve known you since we were little kids, right?”
David:
“Uhh, yeah. You help me with that math test back in second grade.
Dan:
“That’s what I wanted to speak to you about. Your dad is a scientist, right?”
David:
“He’s officially known as the Chief Mechanical Manager of I.E.E, but yeah, why?”
Dan:
“Why the hell do you want me to help you in every test or surprise quiz we get? Your dad is a genius, and he’s rich. He probably hires the top tutors for you, so why do you need my help with all the work we get? I’m not saying you’re dumb or something, but you should know this.”
David (sighing and slightly embarrassed):
“I know. He does hire some instructors for me, the only issue is that most of the time anyway, I don’t really pay attention that much.”
Dan:
“Come on, it can’t be that hard.”
David:
“I wish. It’s been an issue as far back as I can think of. But it’s honestly getting better lately.”
Dan:
“If that was true, I wouldn’t be doing this for you. (realizes something and looks at the pad) Speaking of which, you owe me one.”
[Visual: The pad pings with the result: a perfect 100 with fanfare music along with it. David smiles at Dan]
David:
“Thanks.”
[Visual: Tompson looks at the time on a wall screen and pulls up all the tests on his computer. He seems to take special interest in David and Dan’s]
Tompson:
“Mr. Conner. Mr. West.”
David (worried):
“Great. He caught us.”
Tompson:
“You both did outstanding work today. Great job gentlemen! And in record time too.”
David (relieved):
“Oh thank god, I thought you just wrote my answers word for word.”
Dan:
“And why exactly would I do something so stupid? He’ll probably think I copied you and THEN what would happen?”
David:
“Good point.”
Tompson:
“I am proud of you two. As a reward, you can both start early on the next assignment.”
[Visual: Tompson takes out a remote and presses a button, which replaces both of the boys’ desks with a table littered with science equipment, lab materials, and a book manual. David looks disappointed]
David:
“Goddamnit”.
[Visual: Dan and David begin putting on some protective gear and look at the manual]
David:
“I thought we would actually get to relax, not do more work.
Dan:
“Relax. Looking at the whole thing right now, It’s really just a simple goal of getting a chemical reaction out of this. If we’re lucky, this whole thing should take about…3 hours.”
David:
“What?!”
Dan:
“Give or take, honestly. Now, stop complaining and hurry up, the sooner we finish, the better.”
[Visual: David looks extremely bored as Dan begins to read the manual. As he is doing so, David notices some nearby chemicals: One light blue liquid in an orb-like glass and several bright yellow cubes]
David:
“Dan, I need the manual for a minute.
Dan:
“Be my guest.”
[Visual: David grabs the manual from Dan and looks over a page about the two chemicals. It says they are both individually harmless and little more than multicolored liquid]
David:
“Dan, you see those two vials over there?”
Dan:
“Yeah?”
[Visual: David smiles at Dan]
David: I’m gonna mix them.
[Visual: David reaches for the vials when Dan’s hand stops him]
Dan:
“A-Are you stupid?! Do you want to get expel-”
David:
“It’s fine. The manual says they’re both safe to work with. At worst, you’ll probably get a chemical burn or something. Besides, we’re not gonna do anything interesting in this class, so this might be fun. Trust me.”
Dan:
“Okay…”
[Visual: David throws the manual to the side, where the book lands on a page that says that the two materials should not be combined, lest the risk of triggering an explosive chemical reaction. David is about to drop a cube in the blue liquid]
Dan:
“Wait.”
David (confused):
“Hmm?”
Dan:
“Shouldn’t you drop two cubes for a better reaction?”
David:
“Huh. Good point.”
[Visual: Slow-motion close-up on the cubes as David drops them, splashing into the blue liquid as it starts to bubble. Cut to a floating car going down the highway as other similar cars move around it. We see a white 5’10 man with a lanky and slim build, wearing a formal-looking office worker shirt with blue jeans. He has a messy look to his hair like he just got done with a particularly stressful overtime shift. He has slight bags in his eyes and has brown hair with a slight beard growing. This is Nigel Conner, David Conner’s dad]
Nigel (optimistic):
“So was your day at school?”
David:
“Good.”
Nigel:
“Anything you want to discuss?”
[Visual: David pauses for a bit]
David:
“No, not really.”
[Visual: Nigel frowns and adjusts the rear-view mirror which shows David, who is both covered in dust and soot and has mangled-looking hair. David looks off to the side with a shameful look on his face]
Nigel:
“Oh don’t be like that. Everyone makes mistakes. I remember the last time I made a chemical error.”
David:
”Dad, I don’t think you blew up a classroom when you did. I screwed up and now your schedule is messed up because I couldn’t keep my hands off the vials.
Nigel:
“The point is, just because you messed up today, doesn’t mean you will mess up tomorrow. You were curious about the chemical reaction and how it would work. That’s the sign of a true scientist. You just didn’t read the instructions first. But that doesn’t mean you failed.”
David:
“Wish my teacher thought the same thing. You should have seen how angry he was. I wish I could have known not to combine those two materials.”
Nigel:
“Which is why I will make sure Dr. Achmann will teach you all about Glaurine and Portocubes.
David:
“Wha?”
Nigel:
“You heard me.”
David:
“But Dad, I have a plan with my friends later! We’re gonna go to a swimming pool!”
Nigel:
“Friends and swimming can wait. You’re not going anywhere unless you can tell me the definitions of both of those materials with zero trip-ups.”
David (frustrated):
“Dad!”
Nigel:
“No. You’re going to study hard, young man, and by the time this day’s over, you’re gonna like it!”
David:
“Arggh!”
[Visual: As the final parts of the conversation go on (starting from the ‘but dad’ part) We cut to the car speeding down the highway as we see the tall buildings, floating and flying cars, and multiple shining lights of the city.]

Modern style head canons
Xie Lian: Comfy grandpa style. Probably wears like sweater vests and sticks to white and lighter shades like tans and grays. Probably mostly wears sweatpants but then doesn't get why people keep on hitting on him. (He has dick I just know it.)
Feng Xin: Probably forever stanning his favorite sports teams, always wearing a sports jacket and/or sports jersey. One of those guys with a cool shoe obsession. Always wears oversized shirts so he doesn't get women thirsting over him (it only helps somewhat). He could just stop exercising so he isn't so buff but it's his passion.
Mu Qing: Dark academia. He kind of wants to be goth or grunge but he doesn't have the confidence to go all out with that so he settled with dark academia as his style. The only hint to him wanting a slightly different style is him refusing to give up his eye liner.
Hua Cheng: Goth boy. Sometimes even slutty goth boy because Xie Lian can fight (he can protect himself but he loves seeing protective Xie Lian). Sometimes he steals Xie Lian's clothes and does an even worse comfy grandpa look because Xie Lian's clothes are a bit too small for him.
Pei Ming: Read online how much women love forearms so he's always wearing a dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to be a walking thirst trap. Sometimes will dress like he belongs in some 80s porno.
Ling Wen: Always wears business attire, even when she isn't at work. Is the type of person to go on a hike wearing dress shoes. She just thinks they are more comfortable.
Qi Rong: Dresses like a child. No sense of fashion. He claims that it is artistic expression but really no one gets it.
Quan Yizhan: He probably just wears whatever is "acceptably" clean. Probably mostly has plain t-shirts and anime t-shirts. Only wears jeans.
Yin Yu: Also only wears business attire when out in public, but will make the effort to dress appropriately for whatever activity he is doing. He won't show up to a hike in dress shoes like Ling Wen, he'll switch to sneakers or boots.
Jun Wu: Always wearing the fancy rich people brands like Gucci. He's gifted numerous matching outfits to Xie Lian but Xie Lian always sells them on them eBay because he can't mentally pass up the opportunity to make the money. Also he just doesn't want to wear matching outfits with Jun Wu.
He Xuan: Big titty goth girlfriend. Dresses kind of slutty but it's ok because she can and will fight. Likes to flirt with people so they will buy her food but then she drops them.
Shi Qingxuan: Super girly, almost fairy style. She just wants to look as feminine as possible. Always has killer eyeliner, Hua Cheng and Mu Qing are kind of jealous.
Shi Wudu: Pretty similar to Jun Wu. Always wears rich people brands and gifts only men's clothing to Shi Qingxuan, which she always gives to Xie Lian to promptly sell them on eBay.

A Day in the Life of a Goth in the 80's
Saturday, December 30th, 1989. Richmond, Virginia.
Why the penultimate day of the decade? No reason other than I well remember my general daily activities from this time period & most everyone I knew would be home for winter break so I don't have to worry about if I did anything significant with friends that day. Do I really remember everything I did on December 30th, 1989? No. I literally remember nothing from this specific day. But I remember enough of what my days were generally like so that whatever is surmised needn't necessarily be an untruth. But it was with certainty, a rather ordinary & rather dull day. Life was much, much slower paced then than now so someone used to today's world would find 1989 maddeningly plodding.
And I'm constantly asked if I'm nostalgic for those 'good old days.' I miss being young, frequently meeting beautiful goth ladies, & the many great shows I got to go to, but not for life in general as being painfully poor does not make for nostalgia. Anyway...
I would have awoken around noon. I wasn't seeing anyone at that time, so I definitely woke alone & at my dumpy little apartment (long since torn down) near the Virginia Commonwealth University campus. I would have been a bit hung over from a small party the previous night. Most students would be home for the holidays, so the party would have been small; less than 20 people at a nearby house shared by several students (also long since torn down). I was on a kick at that time where I watched Blade Runner all day, every day, so I would have fired that up. Or it could have been Hellraiser, or Aliens, or The Hunger - all equally plausible. I'd seen them all a hundred times by that point, so they were now just pleasant background noise. I didn't have cable at that place, so there wasn't much on regular TV & I probably only had 5 channels via the antenna.
My tiny studio apartment was mostly bare, just a futon, TV stand, bookcase with a few dozen books, desk & chair. I didn't have a computer or a game system at that time, but I did have a Game Boy, which was brand new in 1989. Folks who visited for the first time would inquire if I'd just been robbed, but since I knew I'd have to move every year to avoid rent gouging landlords, I'd gone full minimalist.
VCR tapes lay scattered about the floor. Clothes also lay scattered about the floor. Posters on the walls. A spare black blanket served as the window curtain.
Coffee, aspirin, & oatmeal for breakfast. Brush teeth, shower, & scrounge for reasonably clean clothes - a band t-shirt, long sleeve shirt, jeans, boots, & my well-worn, long coat. I only ever wore black, back then. Listen to the messages on the answering machine. Maybe reply to some.
Although, it was a cold 35 degrees F when I woke, the temperature quickly warmed into the upper 50's, staying there until well past midnight with delightfully overcast skies, all day long. Quite the pleasant day for Richmond in late December. (This part is true - I researched it online.)
With most of the people I knew away for winter break, I'd have to entertain myself for the bulk of the day as I probably didn't have any firm plans until early evening. So off I'd go. Blade Runner would keep playing until the tape ran out, then it would rewind and start again. It would do this until I shut off the VCR & I routinely forgot to shut it off when leaving. My well worn Walkman cassette player in my coat pocket with a few mix tapes in the other pocket (Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Damned, Ministry, NIN, Skinny Puppy, etc.), & I'm out the door.
If you were standing on the street, you'd have seen an average height, thin, pale, 19 year old with long dark hair, dressed in black, walk across the sidewalk to a beat up old car. I routinely forgot to lock it. It was never stolen.
Saturday afternoons were for thrifting, so I'd visit a few, always starting with Fan Tastic Thrift in The Fan, which amazingly, is still there & looks exactly the same as I remember it. It was within walking distance, but since I'd be going to other places afterward, I'd drive the few blocks in my old war-wagon.
Life in general, & college especially, was much less expensive back then, but I was still just barely scraping by. The only shopping I could afford was thrift stores. Everything I owned, with the exception of underwear, socks, toothbrush, & my futon, was second hand. I would have spent at least an hour, perhaps two, in this store alone. I'd usually score some clothes, couple books, & perhaps a VCR tape - all for about $5. Thrift store clothes tended to be rather thread bare, & they didn't last long before becoming tatters, so I was constantly having to buy new old things. I'd usually run into someone I knew at Fan Tastic, but probably not this day.
I'd likely also visit The Book Exchange & Stories Comics over in Forest Hills (Stories has since relocated & The Book Exchange is no more). Stories is where I'd buy graphic novels such as Sandman & The Book Exchange was a book trading place where I could trade the thrift store books for more specialized books, mostly horror, that were readily available there. As reading was cheap entertainment, I read voraciously & it is possible that I may have stayed in & read all afternoon, but since it was a nice day out, I doubt it.
And at some point I'd probably catch a matinee at The Byrd Theater, a restored movie palace from the 20's (which also still looks just as I remember it). Although a palace, the Byrd charged peasant prices - you could watch a second run film for only $1 (it's $9 now). After the film, I'd putter about in some of the artsy shops near The Byrd, but I rarely bought anything from them - too pricey.
By now, the afternoon's gone, so I'd head home for an inexpensive dinner, most likely either spaghetti, some soup that I'd found on sale, baked potato, or some kind of rice dish. Or I might get Taco Bell - usually a couple of bean burritos which cost 60 cents each, back then. However, I once calculated that my average at-home meal only cost 50 cents, so even budget Taco Bell was double what I'd normally spend. Plus, I only ate two meals a day in those days. I was quite thin. Had you told me then the amount of money I spend now for a weeks worth of food, I might have fainted (I was so thin at that time, I did sometimes faint if I stood up too fast).
And finally, it was time for the day's main event: some band might be playing live music at a local club. Perhaps it was at The Metro on Laurel Street, or Twisters or Newgate Prison - both located on Grace Street.
I would usually learn of these shows via a poster on a telephone pole, found somewhere around my neighborhood. I usually tore down the poster to keep as a reminder (there would always be several more of the same poster underneath - they knew us well). These posters would go on my fridge at home so I wouldn't forget. I preferred The Metro as they were more likely to host bands I'd like. Over the years I saw bands such as Gwar, Corrosion of Conformity, The Smashing Pumpkins (back when they were just starting out), & Strange Boutique play there, as well as countless other bands lost to the mists of time. The Metro was located at 311 N. Laurel Street, but it closed down so long ago it's not even on the oldest Google street view image from 2007.
(The above pic is representative & not anyone I know although I would have been flirting big time with the gal on the right, for sure.)
I'd always walk to the clubs as parking was dicey & it wasn't very far. Plus if I managed to score some booze, I wouldn't have to worry about driving. Would usually arrive before the doors opened & wait in line, chatting it up with friends & acquaintances - probably flirting with any single ladies I'd just met who were friends of friends. I was always on the lookout for my next ex. I knew a ton of people then, & it was always interesting to hear about everyone's adventures since you'd seen them last. It was strange that I'd only ever see some people at a certain club & never anywhere else, while other folks I'd see everywhere.
(And if you're doing the math, yes, I knew Randy Blythe, the future lead singer of Lamb of God, who also went to VCU. I don't believe I'd met him yet in 1989 but for sure I did by late 1990. His nick-name at the time was 'Shark.' He was literally at every party & was hilarious. Shark was quite the social butterfly, so lots of folks knew him - it is not unusual for someone who went to VCU then to have known him, so I'm nothing special in that regard. I moved away before Lamb of God started & I was never a fan, so I didn't even learn he was a big deal until many years later.)
But it's entirely possible that no bands were playing at any of the nearby clubs. I wouldn't have gone to The Metro if they just had a DJ or were playing house music as goth night was on Thursdays at at that time & I didn't like the random music the DJ played on Saturday. But Thursday goth nights were always fun. Never a huge crowd, but a respectable number would put in an appearance.
There might have been another small party that night just as there had been the previous. A smaller gathering of just a few folks was also possible & someone might call (caller ID wasn't a thing yet, so I let my answering machine screen calls) & invite me over to hang out, or play Sega Genesis (Altered Beast & Ghouls 'n Ghosts slayed), or just play cards or chess.
Or I might spend the evening at home playing Tetris into the wee hours of the morning. Or read a book. Or read a local 'Zine, which were quite popular around that time. Or rent a movie from the budget video store near campus that had a decent horror selection. Or re-watch one of the scores of movies I owned. These mundane possibilities aren't very likely for a Saturday, but who's to say with so many people away for winter break?
Regardless of which of those things happened that day, I eventually went to sleep that night - December 30th, 1989 - alone in my own bed, sometime between midnight and 2 am.
And that is a very average day in the life of a goth in the 80's.
Individual results may vary.

I do not understand how to dress myself. It’s so frustrating, I feel like everyone else knows how to put anything together and make it so cute but I look absolutely ridiculous in anything but a hoodie and jeans. I try to look at outfit inspiration online but all it is is thinspo, it’s super skinny girls wearing crop tops and expensive brands. Outfits that look good until you wonder if it’s actually cute or just looks good cause the model is thin.
I just want to dress cute. My whole life I’ve always just gone with jeans/t-shirt/hoodie because I cannot fathom how to dress any other way without looking like a kid who’s mom shouldn’t let them pick their own outfits.
And now all of my clothes are too big anyway, which does not help at all. I have such a hard time shopping because I have no idea what to get. And repeatedly taking clothes on/off is a very high stress activity for me so I can’t try anything on unless I really think I might like it. But I don’t find anything that I think I’ll like because I don’t know what I like.
I know that I’m just autistic, and the jeans/t-shirt/hoodie thing is safe and comfortable for me. I want to improve my style but I just get so overwhelmed at anything different.
Even on the rare occasion that I do find an article of clothing I think looks nice, I inevitably buy the wrong size. I look at a small and think “there’s no way that will fit me” and then get a large instead. And it’s always too big, and I live an hour away from any decent clothing stores so it’s such a hassle to bring things back.
My mission here is to be pretty. Obviously. I’m aware that I’m a conventionally attractive person when I put the effort in. And I have, I have nice hair, clear skin, decent facial structure and almost a good body. I just hide it all under the fashion sense of a 15 year old boy. Overwhelmed and frustrated.
