Stem Cell Therapy: Recent Advancement For Spinal Cord Injuries
A spinal cord injury (SCI) is damage caused to the nerves in the spinal cords that are responsible for sending and receiving signals from the brain. The traumatic lesion in the spinal cord can cause permanent or irreversible sensory and motor deficits. Stem cell therapy has shown massive potential in repairing damaged tissues and promoting recovery of neurological function. Medical research shows the effectiveness of stem cell therapy in treating various neurodegenerative disorders like ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, and spinal cord injury.
Causes Of Spinal Cord Injury
The increasing number of cases of spinal cord injuries worldwide has made SCI a global health priority. Sports injuries and road accidents have been recognized as the two common causes of SCI. Although traumatic conditions comprise major triggering factors to induce spinal cord damage, non-traumatic events such as inflammation, spinal disc degeneration, cancer, substantial tissue loss, and infections can also be the reason for injury to the spinal cord and peripheral nervous system,
Symptoms of Spinal Cord Injury
The emergency symptoms of SCI may include loss of control in body movements due to partial or complete loss of sensory function. It is characterized by loss of motor control of the back, arms, legs, and other body parts, leading to weakness and incoordination. Patients experience extreme pain and pressure in the back, neck, and head.
Other prominent symptoms that doctors have identified as effects of spinal cord damage are -
Difficulty in walking and sitting
Difficulty in breathing
Sudden reflexes or spasms
Loss of control over bladder and bowel movements
Lowered sexual sensitivity and infertility
Trouble in balancing
Numbness or tingling sensation in the hands, fingers, and feet
The Science of Stem Cell Therapy For Spinal Cord Injury Treatment
Spinal cord injury is a severe condition that damages the nerve cells and tissues in the spinal cord, resulting in paralysis or nervous function impairment. Current treatment approaches include medication, rehabilitation therapy, physical therapy, or surgery. However, most of them provide temporary relief and poor outcomes in the long run. Stem cell interventions have emerged as a promising treatment for SCI with its exemplary potential to repair and regenerate injured neurons and tissues.
The distinct ability of stem cells to proliferate and form any functional cell type makes them ideal for treating SCI. The cells self-renew into nerve cells to replace and repair the diseased cells. After they are introduced into a patient’s body, they reach the injured site and interact with the surrounding cells to produce neurotrophic growth factors and alter the microenvironment of the affected region in the spinal cord.
A preclinical study has shown that mesenchymal stem cells release growth-promoting factors that accelerate the growth of axons at the injured area and improve myelination (formation of specialized membranes around axons). Most importantly, the therapeutic potential of stem cells prevents further neuronal degeneration in the spinal cord, lowering inflammation and improving motor and sensory function.

This article delves into what exosome stem cell therapy is, how it works, its benefits, and its implications for patients in Edinburgh seeking cutting-edge medical solutions.
Tumblr media
Understanding Exosomes and Stem Cells
Before exploring the therapy itself, it is essential to understand the components involved: exosomes and stem cells.
What Are Exosomes?
Exosomes are tiny extracellular vesicles released by cells into the bloodstream. They serve as communication vehicles that carry proteins, lipids, and genetic information between cells. This communication plays a crucial role in various physiological and pathological processes, including immune responses, inflammation, and tissue repair.
What Are Stem Cells?
Stem cells are unique cells capable of developing into different cell types. They have the ability to self-renew and differentiate into various specialized cells, making them invaluable in regenerative medicine. There are two primary types of stem cells:
Embryonic Stem Cells: Derived from embryos, these cells can develop into any cell type in the body.
Adult Stem Cells: Found in various tissues, these cells are more specialized and can differentiate into a limited range of cell types.
What Is Exosome Stem Cell Therapy?
Exosome stem cell therapy combines the regenerative properties of stem cells with the communicative power of exosomes. This therapy involves isolating exosomes from stem cells and administering them to patients. The exosomes facilitate cellular communication, promoting healing and regeneration in damaged tissues.
How It Works
Isolation of Exosomes: Exosomes are extracted from stem cells, which can be derived from various sources, including umbilical cord tissue and adipose tissue.
Administration: The isolated exosomes are then delivered to the patient, either via injection or intravenously, depending on the condition being treated.
Mechanism of Action: Once in the body, exosomes interact with target cells, providing essential signals that enhance repair processes, reduce inflammation, and promote cell regeneration. They can also influence the behavior of surrounding cells, encouraging tissue healing and regeneration.
Benefits of Exosome Stem Cell Therapy
Exosome stem cell therapy offers numerous advantages for patients, particularly those with chronic conditions or injuries. Some of the most notable benefits include:
1. Enhanced Healing
The regenerative properties of exosomes can significantly accelerate the healing process in various tissues. By promoting cell growth and repair, patients may experience faster recovery from injuries or surgeries.
2. Reduced Inflammation
Exosomes have anti-inflammatory properties that can help alleviate chronic inflammation, a common underlying factor in various diseases. This can lead to improved symptoms for conditions such as arthritis or autoimmune disorders.
3. Non-Invasive Approach
Exosome stem cell therapy is typically less invasive than traditional surgical procedures. The administration of exosomes can often be done through simple injections, minimizing recovery time and associated risks.
4. Versatility
This therapy has a wide range of potential applications, including:
Orthopedic Conditions: Helping to heal joint injuries, cartilage damage, and fractures.
Neurological Disorders: Potentially aiding in recovery from conditions like stroke or traumatic brain injury.
Cosmetic Applications: Used in anti-aging treatments to rejuvenate skin and promote hair growth.
5. Safety Profile
Since exosomes are derived from the body’s own cells, the risk of adverse reactions or complications is generally low. This makes exosome therapy a more appealing option for many patients compared to other treatments.

she's her daddy's girl, her momma's world - chapter 21
Tumblr media
sleep in peace tonight
recovery isn't linear, the Severides know that firsthand
Read on AO3 or below!
It was well after midnight when Kelly climbed back into bed. As he settled under the sheets, a drowsy Stella snuggled into his side. "Another nightmare?"
"Yeah," Kelly breathed, wrapping his arms around his wife. "I got her back to sleep but I wish there was more we could do for her."
"Hey, you heard Dr. Pickler. She said we're doing everything right; it’s just going to take some time.”
It had been six months since that fateful day when Kelly had been shot and Maya had been kidnapped. A day that had started as the perfect day with Kelly and Maya spending some daddy/daughter time together had turned into a nightmare in just a few seconds.
Everything ended as well as they could’ve hoped for; Maya was found less than two hours after she was taken, Kelly made it through surgery and their little family was reunited.
Kelly recovered physically and returned to work after a few months of physical therapy but mentally, he was struggling. He blamed himself for Maya being taken and had a lot of guilt over not being able to protect her.
Stella, while physically fine, was mentally and emotionally spent for a while. That day was the worst day of her life, and it was going to take a while to process everything.
Maya was fairing much better than both of her parents. The first few days following the shooting and her kidnapping she struggled with severe separation anxiety, understandably not wanting to be away from either of her parents.  After a week or two, however, she was back to her normal, happy self. During the day, that is. Nighttime brought frequent nightmares, especially on the nights when her parents were on shift.
The entire Kidd-Severide family, at the urging of Dr. Charles, had been attending regular therapy sessions since Kelly had been released from the hospital. It was helping tremendously, but they all still struggled from time to time. Kelly and Stella’s focus though was Maya.
After four sessions, Maya’s therapist Dr. Pickler sat them down and shared that Maya’s nightmares focused on Kelly being shot, and different outcomes her mind conjured up.
Desperate to help her, they begged for advice on what they could do, and Dr. Pickler told them to continue doing what they were doing—calming her fears, showing her that they were OK, letting her know everyone is safe, etc. Dr. Pickler confirmed Maya would most likely outgrow the nightmares as she got older, and their schedules and daily lives returned to normal. Everything was just going to take time.
"I know, that doesn't make it any easier though." Kelly sighed. “Especially when it’s my fault.”
“Hey,” Stella scolded, propping herself up on one of her arms. She glared at her husband in the lowlight of their bedroom. “It is NOT your fault, OK? You didn’t choose to get shot while trying to keep our daughter from being kidnapped. That’s not on you, none of this is.”
Kelly looked at her, staring into her eyes for a few moments before nodding.
Stella sighed and moved a hand to his cheek. She knew there was a deep, rational part of Kelly’s brain that believed what she was saying, but it was being overpowered by his sense of guilt. He’d gotten better over the past months, his guilt about Maya had lessened along with his fear of something else happening to her, but every time Maya had a nightmare his guilt was back and worse than ever.
“She doesn’t blame you, ya know,” Stella stated, very matter of fact. “That little girl loves you SO much! Her nightmares aren’t centered around her being kidnapped—they stem from fear of losing you. She just wants to know you’re safe. That’s why you’re the one that can always calm her down.”
Stella smiled softly. “She’s a bigger daddy’s girl than she was before. I didn’t even think that was possible.”
Kelly laughed quietly before sobering up. “I just want her to be OK.”
“I know,” Stella acknowledged, stroking his cheek. “I do too, and she’s going to be OK. We all will be.”
Kelly nodded again and this time, Stella could see he believed her words. She leaned forward and kissed him before settling back in his arms.
They were starting to drift off, almost back asleep, when the door to their bedroom opened. They opened their eyes to see Maya standing in the doorway, clutching her beloved firefighter teddy bear under one arm. (The bear had been a present from Squad for her second birthday and she’d slept with it for every nap and night since).
Kelly sat up in bed, now wide awake. “Maya, what’s wrong? Did you have another bad dream?”
Maya shook her head, her messy curls cascading around her face, and squeezed her teddy bear.
By now, Stella had sat up and was staring at her daughter. “Come here, baby.”
Maya slowly toddled her way over to her parent’s bed, coming to a stop on Kelly’s side. She raised her arms. “Daddy.”
Kelly immediately leaned over and picked her up, hugging her tightly before sitting her on his lap. He pushed some of her curls out of her face. “You OK?”
“Can I sleep wiff you and mommy?”
Kelly and Stella shared a look. It was rare for Maya to ask to sleep in their bed with them, even in the immediate aftermath of her kidnapping. She’d always been independent—even as a baby she wasn’t big on cuddling—but every once in a while, when she was sick or had had a particularly bad dream, she’d find her way into her parents’ bed.
The fact that she was wanting to sleep with them meant that the nightmare she’d had earlier had shaken her up.
Kelly’s heart broke and he hugged her again, placing a kiss on the top of her head. “Of course, you can.”
Stella reached over and stroked Maya’s cheek. “let’s get you tucked in, OK?”
Maya nodded, her head still resting against Kelly’s chest.
Kelly moved Maya off his lap and laid her down in between him and Stella. Stella situated the toddler and her teddy bear, then pulled the blanket up to cover her.
As Stella and Kelly laid back down themselves, Stella started running her fingers through Maya’s hair. “Close your eyes,” Stella soothed. “Mommy and daddy are right here.”
Maya did as she was told, the soothing motion of Stella’s fingers in her hair and the security of having her parents around her lulling her to sleep. “Love you, mommy. Love you daddy.”
Stella and Kelly each placed a kiss on Maya’s forehead.
“We love you too baby."
“We love you so much.”
Maya was able to give a small smile before she lost her fight against sleep.
Kelly and Stella exchanged one more look before trying to get back to sleep themselves, their hands joined on top of Maya.
Their family was still healing, but they were together, and they could handle anything.

Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH):Understanding Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Introduction: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) represents a critical medical condition characterized by bleeding within the brain tissue. This condition, often stemming from ruptured arteries or veins due to abnormal pressure, trauma, or developmental irregularities, poses a substantial threat to health. The blood itself within the brain tissue can induce primary damage, while the increased pressure (intracranial pressure - ICP) contributes to secondary brain injuries. Causes: Primary bleeds, constituting 85% of cases, typically result from uncontrolled high blood pressure. Secondary causes encompass a broad spectrum, including tumors (both primary and secondary metastatic), vascular anomalies, venous sinus thrombosis, infections, chronic liver or kidney diseases, use of blood thinners, and drug abuse. Additionally, age, gender, race, previous stroke history, long term liver and kidney disease elevate the risk of ICH. Symptoms: Symptoms vary based on the affected brain region and may include sudden onset headaches associated with or without nausea & vomiting, weakness or numbness on one side of the body, altered consciousness levels, seizures, speech and/or visual disturbances. Onset of symptoms can range from sudden to progressively worsening over minutes to hours. When & How to Seek Medical Care: Immediate medical attention is imperative upon noticing neurological symptoms, as hemorrhages can rapidly enlarge within the first three hours in a significant percentage of cases and the volume of hemorrhage substantially correlates with outcomes - larger hemorrhages typically lead to worse outcomes. Testing & Diagnosis: Diagnosis primarily relies on non-contrast computer tomography (CT) scans of the brain. However, in specific cases, contrast-enhanced MRI of the brain and digital subtraction angiography might be necessary, especially in suspected malignancies or vascular malformations respectively. Serial or interval CT scans are recommended for monitoring patients experiencing delayed deterioration due to re-bleeding, brain swelling, hydrocephalus, or seizures. Treatment Approaches: Treatment goals revolve around halting bleeding, removing large blood clots (hematomas), and alleviating pressure on the brain. Strategies encompass both non-surgical and surgical management options, depending on the severity and patient condition. Non-surgical approaches focus on monitoring and controlling brain pressure, blood pressure regulation, clotting factor administration, and specialized care for specific medical conditions. Surgical interventions may involve clot evacuation or other specialized cranial procedures. Prognosis and Complications: The prognosis for ICH can be severe, with mortality rates as high as 50% within 30 days, primarily occurring within 24 hours of the initial insult. Complications include extension of bleeding into ventricles, hydrocephalus, seizures, venous thromboembolism, and transient hyperglycemia, significantly impacting patient outcomes and recovery.
In conclusion, understanding the multifaceted aspects of ICH, including its causes, symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatment strategies, and potential complications, is crucial in delivering effective and timely interventions for better patient outcomes and improved recovery prospects.
