not to be true crime posting on main but i think i'm falling down the wm3 rabbit hole again
#xenia.txt#when i tell you this case keeps me up at night to this day#not even the murders themselves as much as the general public's reception to and opinions on the case 3 decades later like#i get why it;s always been so divisive especially after the pl docus came out (lots of opinions on those btw none of them are good#from the bottom of my heart fuck you joe berlinger and bruce sinofsky)#but it's truly baffling how no one is willing to do the research on what is arguably THE most well documented true crime case in recent#history like. everything that's ever been released to the general public is available online and i mean everything#you can find all the court files trial transcripts depositions interogation tapes aerial photos you name it it's out there for anyone with#internet connection to access at any and all hours of the day#and yet people are still foaming at the mouth fighting on reddit abt their innocence based off nothing but a couple of movies like#bffr with me right now!! almost every point the innocenters make can be easily debunked by scrolling through callahan for 15 minutes#'but they've been pushing for dna testing since their release so they can't be guilty' baby the case is closed!#it's been closed the second they took the plea. they can be striking under that courthouse and it still won't change a thing and they knowi#that's why they're pushing for it in the first place but that's just my opinion#^ and i say they but it's really only echols which makes a lot of sense to me personally#and if you want to talk abt dna testing let's talk abt the one that was done in 2011 and how the defense hurried to propose the plea as soo#as they got the results! let's talk abt those cause no one's ever seen them and i would very much like to#braga share the results the people want to know!!#makes me wonder which pieces of evidence they even submitted for that 2011 testing because if i'm remembering correctly#there was one that would've closed this case instantly and maybe that's why the results were never disclosed and the plea was rushed#but that's also just my opinion#and it's also interesting how the majority of people who have in fact deep dived into this case#(and i'm not talking abt big true crime youtubers as i'm very sceptical abt their research abilities)#all collectively lean towards guilty. much to think about#i was hoping someone would make another ~actually~ unbiased documentary for the 30th anniversary and go over all the case files#but i don't think that's even realistic at this point seeing as everyone and their mother has some sort of an opinion on this case#hbo deserves another lawsuit for this. they should've never won the first one in the first place#true crime tw

Filmmaking is also a form of expression, thoughts, ideas, concepts, feelings and moods of a human being visualized in film. The film itself is mostly a fiction, although some are based on fact true stories or based on a true story. There are also documentaries with original and real pictures, or biographical films that tell the story of a character. There are many other popular genre films, ranging from action films, horror films, comedy films, romantic films, fantasy films, thriller films, drama films, science fiction films, crime films, documentaries and others. That’s a little information about the definition of film or movie. The information was quoted from various sources and references. Hope it can be useful. ❍❍❍ TV MOVIE ❍❍❍ The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 1930s. Televised events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 19340 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 1948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “”Mr Television”” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 1951 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 1, 1954. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. ❍❍❍ Formats and Genres ❍❍❍ See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 1980s, many MOVIE feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television MOVIE to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intendevd five-season run.[citvatio””&n needed] In 2007, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2007, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “”I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. ❍❍❍ Thank’s For All And Happy Watching❍❍❍ Find all the movies that you can stream online, including those that were screened this week. Life's still good: Overseas Pinoys share Christmas amid pandemic
#PHnews: Life's still good: Overseas Pinoys share Christmas amid pandemic
MANILA – While the Philippines is still battling with the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-2019) pandemic, Filipinos are slowly but surely bouncing back and showing glimmers of hope to celebrate the Yuletide season. Filipinos working overseas are no exception in spreading the Christmas spirit amid the health crisis and willingly shared to the Philippine News Agency (PNA) how some of life's biggest blessings are borne out of their hardest challenges. Reyven Osorio, 54, works as an engineer for various oil companies for 27 years in different parts of the world.
Due to the pandemic, Osorio is now temporarily out-of-work but the Japanese government is providing for his monthly stipend covering at least 60 percent of his income. He is spending his free time to good use by going around different tourist spots in Japan such as Hokkaido, Harada, Tokyo, and Asakusa, with his daughter Vena Roshiena.
“A lot of good times have been created during this pandemic, there are ups and downs but the blessings that came along with it are definitely bigger. I am able to spend a lot of my time with my daughter. We would go to places and she would keep records of it through her vlog which our family in the Philippines can see. It’s a way to ease their worries by letting them know we are doing alright here,” he said. Osorio has been working abroad as an engineer since he was 26.
He first worked in Saudi Arabia where his journey as an OFW began when his older brother died and he stepped-up to be the kuya for his four other siblings. Soon, he also had a family of his own which prompted him to continue working abroad.
Osorio said there are a lot of happenings in the world that may distract a person and the key to remain grounded is to keep the focus on family.
“It’s difficult in the start but it will grow on you eventually and in a lot of ways the sacrifices of being an overseas worker are worth it. To those who are still in their early years of work and are having a hard time, it will get better. For now, let’s enjoy what we have and do what we have to do, celebrate the little things and the big ones with pure joy like Christmas,” he said.

Jianzel Villacorte, 25, who has been in New Jersey, USA for five years recently got her nursing degree.
Villacorte followed her mother to the United States in 2015. Despite being armed with her AB Mass Communication degree from Ateneo de Davao, she studied and earned her nursing degree from New York University in May this year.
But jobs were hard to come by following the restrictions due to the Covid-19.
“I was in the process of doubting myself during job hunting. Luckily I found one, and it was not easy either. As a pediatric nurse, I had to be there not only for my patients but also for their parents. I had to provide emotional support. The term 'patient care' was given a new meaning at this time. I coped by thinking that it is a big opportunity to be able to give service to these people during this challenging time. It’s very rewarding,” she said.
A simple dinner shared with family after attending the Holy Mass would be a delightful Christmas for Villacorte. There may not be any parties for this year but she shared she is still happy that she is spending the holidays together with loved ones.

Marion Florentino, 27, is a seven-year licensed seafarer.
The life of a seafarer is already filled with uncertainties but much more during the pandemic.
Florentino shared his flight from Davao to Manila had to be re-booked three times by his crewing officer when he was called to receive a new contract in July this year from the company he has been working for since he got his license.
“I had to find a safe place to stay while waiting for the confirmation from the agency and it was a tedious process looking for a unit that is safe and clean, there were many restrictions and protocol. Luckily after I got my swab results which turned out negative, the company has provided us with decent accommodation. Still, anxiety was sky-high then thinking we do not have an income yet and there were bills to pay. I’m just blessed that my company allocated some financial aid for us while we were waiting for dispatch,” he said.
When he was younger, he said, he did not plan on becoming a seafarer but he was offered a scholarship grant by a shipping line based abroad so he took the chance considering how much he can save from the deal.
Florentino likened spending his days at sea to being in quarantine. “It’s hard. It has its ups and downs but seeing my parents happy, that they are proud of what I have achieved takes all the sacrifices away, it’s the best incentive. Really, it is just about looking forward to a better future for them and for the family than I will be building,” he added.
For this year, he will share Christmas with his shipmates as he started his new contract in September.
“We just video call with family. Hopefully, the Internet connection will cooperate,” he added.
When time permits, Marion Florentino and his parents (Ariel and Gina) will catch up with each other via video call. It is a cure to loneliness, he added. (Photo from Marion Florentino)
Rhea Bragas, 31, moved to Australia in 2018 to study culinary.
Relocating to a different country was a decision Bragas pondered on for over a year. After quitting her job as a journalist for almost nine years, she went on to chase another dream in Australia.
“I want to make more so that I can give more. I knew that there is something big for me, supernatural opportunities that are waiting for me in Australia. I won’t settle for a life that is less than the one I am capable of living,” she said.
Everything for her was a learning opportunity when she finally arrived in Sydney.
She shared that she developed a better grip on managing her time and finances because she can only rely on herself.
“When I was still studying Culinary and Hospitality Management, I had two jobs: an apprentice chef and the TFC (The Filipino Channel) News Correspondent for Australia. After two years, I completed my studies and I graduated last July. It was not easy and comfortable, but it was all worth it,” she said.
When the pandemic hit, the tourism industry halted its operations leaving her jobless.
However, she was hired for temporary work in Sydney Transport until things get back to normal again.
“We are so blessed to have a job during the pandemic. Giving up and going home was never an option. Everything is still working out for us. Now, I ended up having three jobs and I am so grateful for it,” she said.
For Christmas however, “work is life” is her mantra.
“If you are working in the hospitality industry, it is expected that you always spend your Christmas and New Year working, giving the customers the best dining experience. But I won’t mind at all because I can still enjoy watching the fireworks in the most beautiful harbor in the world. It’s just a matter of perspective. We just need to carry on with life,” she added. Film is a work of art in the form of a series of live images that are rotated to produce an illusion of moving images that are presented as a form of entertainment. The illusion of a series of images produces continuous motion in the form of video. The film is often referred to as a movie or moving picture. Film is a modern and popular art form created for business and entertainment purposes. Film making has now become a popular industry throughout the world, where feature films are always awaited by cinemas.
Films are made in two main ways. The first is through shooting and recording techniques through film cameras. This method is done by photographing images or objects. The second uses traditional animation techniques. This method is done through computer graphic animation or CGI techniques. Both can also be combined with other techniques and visual effects. Filming usually takes a relatively long time. It also requires a job desk each, starting from the director, producer, editor, wardrobe, visual effects and others.

❍❍❍ Formats and Genres ❍❍❍
See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres
Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed]
A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television MOVIE to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intendevd five-season run.[citvatio””&n needed]
In 2012, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2012, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “”I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television.

Congratulations, T! You have been accepted for the role of Lisa Ramirez (FC: Alice Braga). Where can we even start?! This application, from the get go, was just a marvelous experience. You’ve written Lisa so tenderly and articulated that she is, at her core, a good person. We especially loved the inclusion of her war past and how that has stayed with her. That attention to detail stands out and I was touched you reached out to discuss it further. Moreover, your acknowledgement of the current state of affairs and how Lisa fits into them just shows that you’re ready to throw her into the deep end. She has a central role to play in Devil’s Knot, and we know you’re going to bring the best out in her. Thank you for a mature and thoughtful application. Please have a look at this page prior to sending in your account.
OUT OF CHARACTER
Name: T. Age: 23. Pronouns: She/Her. Timezone: CST. Activity estimation: 7/10. I work a full-time job and sometimes I’m on call, but I’m always on for a few hours a day and sometimes I can even have my laptop at work. Triggers: [Redacted]
IN CHARACTER: BASICS
Full name: Lisa Marie Ramirez. Age (DD/MM/YYY): 43 (21/02/1953). Gender: Female. Pronouns: She/Her. Sexuality: Bisexual. Occupation: Community Engagement and Liaison Officer. Connection to Victim: Before Brian went missing, there wasn’t really a connection there. Of course, any time someone new moves into Devil’s Knot, word goes ‘round. With Brian’s disappearance, her role as liaison officer has became something a bit overwhelming and quite frankly, a major shock factor. She’s responsible for ensuring that every resource and service is utilized in the greatest manner, and to keep the press under control. If anything, she’s a lifeline for Brian, which puts a lot of unwanted weight on her. As for Linda, Lisa has met her a few times to help with the organization of searches and because of her friendship with Vernon. Alibi: Lisa was at the community centre setting up for an AA sobriety meeting with a few members of the group. Of course, she was there late considering she’s responsible for hosting the meeting and cleaning up afterwards. Expansion in writing sample and in the headcanon section. Faceclaim: Alice Braga.
WRITING SAMPLE
No meeting was ever the same, no addict ever fully recovered from the sickness that haunted them. Except, those who didn’t understand the disease failed to label it as such, but who was she to make such a powerful statement? She believed fully in the program’s goal and believed that if every member supported the other, that any addiction could be slain. Her hope was enough to keep her going, no matter how many times an individual fell off the wagon or damn near dared to. Someone had to believe in them outside of their sponsors and if the community couldn’t find the empathy to do that, then she most certainly could.
“Alright, the third batch of coffee is almost done and I’ve already got the chairs set up for about the same number of people as we had last meeting. I added a few more in case we had some newcomers.” She was hellbent on gathering as many people as she possibly could, but there were still those who suffered with their sickness in the dark. The overzealous organizer looked around the meeting space where plenty of familiar faces mingled amongst one another. It was a pride-striking moment to see such an amazing group of people, but then again, who was to say they were amazing at all outside of the meeting circle? After all, she’d trusted Max Acosta and he’d been pinned with a violent murder, though parts of her still doubted his guilt.
When the caged clock above the exit struck eight, everyone gathered in the circle, leaving only a few empty seats to Lisa’s minor disappointment. One day they’d fill them all and need a few extra, but today wasn’t that day. She sat up straight as she introduced herself the same as always. First came the Serenity Prayer, then the stories of the various meeting members strong enough to share.
“My name is Lisa and I’m an alcoholic,” she paused, allowing enough time for those in the group to politely greet her as they always did. “I’ve been sober for about sixteen years now. Everyday is still a challenge, but if it were easy, anyone could do it. I used to hate the idea of stopping drinking. It seemed like if I stopped, all of my past pain would come back. Whenever I finally met my year mark, then my second year, I finally felt powerful to be able to function without a bottle. It’s possible to have a good time without drinking. I know that being here isn’t easy for some of us, but nothing comes easy. It doesn’t matter what the people outside of this meeting space think – it only matters what we do with ourselves. Everyone in this room is brave and I commend you all on your shares, and I commend those of you don’t share as well. Thank you.” Everyone needed recognition, even the quiet ones that were too reserved or nervous to speak up.
Interested in the next share, Lisa perked up in her straight-backed metal chair, dark hues scanning her fellow peers for the next brave person to step up. Nervously, a familiar face raised his hand, her attention directed solely toward him. She admired those brave enough to step into the arena known as the recovery process. Round after round could be fought, but the slightest hint of weakness could result in a loss. It was a dangerous game they’d all been thrown into, but day by day, they were desperately trying to win.
After a near hour and a half had passed, Lisa found herself standing with a smile. “That’s all the time we have tonight. Thank you to those who shared. As always, if you want to stay and chat a bit before heading out, go ahead. If anyone wants another cup of coffee, just let me know before I clean up. Have a safe trip home and I look forward to seeing you all next time.”

HEADCANONS: TW ALCOHOLISM, TW DEATH, TW WAR, TW PTSD
Lisa joined the war effort as a combat nurse in 1971 at the age of eighteen. She lied on the application saying she was twenty, but no one dared to question it. After all, it was a desperate time for American troops and all hands on deck were needed. She was thrown into combat with a short amount of training, but the truth of the matter is simple; she’d been sent in for damage control and nothing more. She spent two years in combat before the Paris Peace Accords was signed and by March of 1973, she’d been brought by to the states left to recover with the things she’d taken part in.
She suffered from PTSD, which led to her drowning out her pain in booze. For seven years she tried to get sober, but always fell off the wagon for some reason or another. Quite frankly, she was a functioning alcoholic. By 1980, Lisa needed a change in scenery and programs, which is what brought her to Devil’s Knot. Now, it’s 1996 and she’s been sober for a stretch of sixteen years.
She has her doubts about Max Acosta being capable of such violence. She thinks that the police department should’ve dug deeper, but then again, what does she know?
Since 1984, she’s been building herself up in the community and has tried to keep herself as busy as possible. With twelve years gone, she’s more comfortable in her own skin than she’s been her entire life.
The night of Brian’s disappearance, Lisa was held up at the community centre with an AA sobriety meeting. Her night started off with getting coffee ready for the group. I mean, do you know how important coffee is at meetings? Has to be strong and bottomless. She leads the sobriety meetings, ‘cause who better than someone with sixteen years under their belt? She opened, guided discussions, and shut the group down routinely as she did every other night. Afterwords, she took point in returning the chairs to their orderly form, cleaned up the coffee maker, and made sure to take out the trash like any good guest of a borrowed space would do. If she had to guess what time she finally got home that night, she’d say nearly eleven, perhaps a little later. Besides, it wasn’t like she was watching her every move at the time.
Meeting runtime: 8:00PM to 9:30PM
With Brian’s disappearance, Lisa’s been working double, even triple time to keep things as calm as possible. Between her late nights at the mayor’s office and her early mornings at the station, Lisa is worn thin at times. The hungry journalists and their thirst for a connection to the tragic incident in 1984 has been somewhat of a trigger for her. She still has a hard time believing Max is the one responsible, but what she thinks doesn’t really matter. So, she spends a lot of time keeping the story straight and dodging as many questions as she can. It’s an elevated role for her, but someone has to do it and she’s always willing to step up when needed.Whenever she and Danielle go out for beers, Lisa always chooses ginger ale as her drink of choice. After all, recovery is a forever long process and she’s not too keen on throwing away sixteen years of sobriety for a good night of fun and lord knows Danielle would never let her do such a thing.Being with someone 14 years younger than her is a total shock factor at times. She often questions when it’s going to end and quite honestly, she has low expectations of it actually lasting longterm, regardless of what she wants. It doesn’t mean she wouldn’t be incredibly happy if it were to workout. She wants to settle down in the safest route possible, even if it means making a few changes.Anyone who knows Lisa knows that Sweet Child O’ Mine is her jam. It’s her all time favorite song and if it plays, you can almost guarantee she’s somewhere mouthing every word and playing the best damn air guitar known to (wo)mankind.

Lawrence English: Five Questions
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Lawrence English’s latest album Cruel Optimism is named after a theory coined by contemporary philosopher Lauren Berlant, wherein “something you desire is actually an obstacle to your flourishing.” What, exactly, is desired, according to Berlant? The impossible American Dream and all of its neoliberal, Western capitalist equivalencies, for one. English’s album was inspired by Trump and Brexit, but also the violence and colonialism that pervades our treatment of brown and black bodies at home and abroad. How English--a sound artist, composer, curator, and writer--interacts with this theory through his music is through twisting it a bit, accepting traditional notions of what we strive for as cruel, reshaping optimism into something more inclusive--equality and peace for all. On the album, the song titles are evocative of their sounds. The effective “Somnambulist” challenges us not to fall asleep to atrocities even when more convenient for us to ignore them, while the church-bell-featuring “Requiem For A Reaper Pillar Of Cloud” is funereal, reminding us of our mortality, ever sped up by this cruel optimism.
Like Berlant’s, English’s work focuses on the aesthetic and the body. Unlike Berlant’s, English literally makes direct change to the body. Specifically, he wants you to physically transform as a result of his transcendent live experience; he often suggests his audience members lie down to feel the vibrations reverberating from the floor from his all-encompassing noise. He’ll be performing Cruel Optimism October 26th at Jazz Cafe in London and both Optimism and his Radical Listener field recording workshop the following days at the Semibreve Festival in Braga, Portugal. I got the opportunity to catch up with English and ask him about his ever-strengthening relationship with Berlant’s theory, performing live, mastering other band’s records, and running a label [English releases his own and others’ music on the Room 40 imprint].
Since I Left You: Cruel Optimism was a response to many of the political movements both noble and terrible of the past few years. A lot has happened in the world since it came out [in February]. How has your relationship with Berlant's "Cruel Optimism" theory changed in the past months?
Lawrence English: I’m not sure it has changed, to be honest. If anything, I still feel that this concept lies at the heart of much of the turmoil, cloaked discomfort, and also the fears and anxieties that occupy the politics of the day. In some parts of the the world, we see people pushing to break the attachments that they perceive as reducing their quality of life. The recent situation in Catalonia is one such example. At the other extreme, you need look no further than the hopeless conversations, or lack thereof, around increased gun control in the United States following that tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas. What a completely and utter nightmare, and to be one of the people living with the loss of a loved one, knowing that the politics around gun control is largely in the hands of lobbyists and corporate interests, is pretty harrowing.
Looking back across the year, I feel more acutely this sense that somehow we are throwing off the corpse of the 20th century. In my country, we’re fighting for same sex marriage equality and it feels as though this move among others is a reminder that the future lies in a progressive sense of equity, and in many instances, equality. I feel strongly that we can now start to re-imagine what we want out of this century. We can recognize the failings of concepts like neo-liberalism and the costs, in terms of mental health, social values, and the environment, too, and begin to really drill into pathways that lead us out of that downward spiral. For talking to people over the year all across the world, I feel there’s a sense that as difficult as the path maybe, people want to try and strive for more progressive, engaged, and fulfilling futures. I share their desire, and it’s the accumulation of these desires that starts the motion towards these shifts.
SILY: How do you adapt Cruel Optimism to a live setting?
LE: The record was very much built out of the experiences I had performing following the release of Wilderness Of Mirrors. What the live environment provides is an opportunity to recognize the capacity of the body and its relation to sound. Specifically that under certain conditions the body is an ear, and it experiences sound with as much potential as the ears attached to the sides of our heads. So in performances, Cruel Optimism is about testing this relation through the use of physical sound. I ask the audience to lie down in many cases. In doing so, their body is in more direct contact with the vibrations as as the music swells it consumes the body in a way which is quite specific. The dynamics of the concert lend an opportunity for those in the audience to recognize themselves in the sound.
The other aspect I want to explore with the concert is the opportunity for solidarity that concerts can provide. I think they are a wonderful metaphor for community. Everyone in the space will experience the concert differently, and they will associate with different aspects of the sound, which reflects their unique history and set of experiences. In the same moment, we are all sharing the same sound in time and place, so for me, this reflects the value of community; the ideas that though each of us has different experiences, wills, and desires, we can share time and place meaningfully, and there’s a distinct value in that sharing of those moments.
SILY: Tell me about your Radical Listener workshop. Do you approach it differently depending on the space it's in?
LE: I do, yes. I think, like the idea of field recording itself, the workshop needs to reflect the space in which it is taking place.
The workshop is very much about offering an opportunity for participants to consider their listening capacities as it pertains to practices like field recording or any kind of creative acoustic endeavor. I use the workshop as a way of exploring some of the theoretical ideas I have developed around listening. I talk about the idea of relational listening as a means of recognizing the challenges in translating our interior listening and sharing it with others through the exterior capacities of the microphone. It’s essentially a way of being critical with our approaches to listening and striving to understand how listening can operate for us more deeply.
SILY: You have a ton of credits, and some of the most surprising ones are your mastering credits on rock albums by bands like Blank Realm. To what extent do you take the same approach between working on records like that and, say, Ben Frost records?
LE: In some respects, sound operates under the same conditions, frequency, amplitude, harmonics, and the like, but the possible interplay of these factors is limitless. Given this, I tend to say that each project might pull on similar raw materials and ideas, but the execution and application of those materials is entirely different project to project. Using the most recent Ben Frost album The Centre Cannot Hold, I worked on two mixes for that record. Steve Albini has done all of the recordings, and they sounded incredible; honestly, that guy pulls a sound from his studio like no one else, and it was a complete pleasure to work on the sounds. For the mixing, what I had to approach was that very particular aesthetic quality that is maintained across Ben’s work. It’s a particular kind of acoustic intensity, let’s say, and finding how I could accentuate that in the materials Steve had recorded. To do that, I employed a range of new mixing techniques that I found opened out the nature of the roominess of the recordings but kept that intensity and fever that’s so critical to what Ben does. It took quite a bit of time to find that point of ignition, but once I did, the mixes happened rather quickly. It’s always a process of restlessness--the hunger of the search and the acceptance of that moment when you know what you’re doing just changes things for the sake of themselves and doesn’t make the overall piece better.
SILY: You've been running the Room 40 imprint for almost two full decades. What would you say to someone who wanted to start an imprint or label in 2017?
LE: Be patient. Only release music you cherish. Work with artists you respect and who respect you. Remember that at the end of most every email is a human being. It’s easy to forget that…it goes for musicians reaching out to labels, too.
