Smok Wawelski (The Wawel Dragon) by Bronisław Chromy, 1969:
propaganda: This is a famous and beloved statue outside of Wawel Castle (pronounced Vavel) in Kraków. The story of Smok Wawelski goes that he'd been eating all the animals (and people?) in Kraków so the king ordered his sons to kill him, but obviously the dragon is very dangerous. The princes tricked him by filling animals with tar and leaving them out. He ate them and when he tried to breathe fire, his insides burned up. There is a second version that says a cobbler tricked him into eating a tar-filled sheep and the tar made him so thirsty he drank the Wisła (the Vistula, the river that runs through Kraków) until he burst.
Fun fact, those are not extra arms but rather extra heads. Also, you can text the dragon to ask him to breathe fire, and then he does. He gets thousands of texts a day.
about the artist: When I was a kid, I was sure this statue was the actual Smok Wawelski that had somehow carbonized over a thousand years, but alas no, a guy made it in 1969 out of bronze. Bronisław Chromy was an artist, a professor, and Dragon Mother. He passed away in 2017.

sculptures round 3 poll 6
Is a woman a human being? by Maria Pinińska-Bereś, 1972:
propaganda: zbliżasz się do pracy i czytasz tabliczkę “data produkcji … data ważności ..?” i myślisz oo kurde, a potem czytasz tytuł i myślisz oo jeszcze większe kurde, a potem patrzysz że dzieło jest z 1972 roku i zaczynasz krzyczeć [you approach the work and you read the plaque “date of production … best by ..?” and you think oh damn, and then you see the title and you think oh DAMN damn, and then you see that this was made in 1972 and you start to scream]
Embroidered ordinaries by Alicja Kozłowska, 2023 (?):
propaganda: I love it when artist decide to put the spot light on something ordinary and transforms it - this art remainds me to value the little things, and in that not to fall prey to the hyper consumist culture we live in.

sculptures round 3 poll 4
Space of unknown growth by Magdalena Abakanowicz, 1998:
propaganda: At least people I've talked to seem to be more familar with Magdalena Abakanowiczs "Agora" but I wanted to high light this work in contrast. Agora with the headless humanoid figures has something creepy, the artist spoke about crowds tendency to blindly follow even into horrible violence, but it also for me has the depersonalisation/objectification of the figures which is its own form of violence - in contrast these large rocks are softer in a way, more approchable, a nicer story, the title of the work with the shape of the rocks and the surrounding forest makes me thing of seeds, hope - of course just because something is a nicer story to hear doesn't make it a better story to hear, I am glad that hard to shallow work like Agora exist, we need to think and talk about stuff that is hard, but I also like that work like "Space of Unknown Growth" exists.
The legality of space by Ewa Partum, 1971:
propaganda: this installation at freedom square in łódź was showing the absurdity of socio-political existence in the 1970s poland. the signs read, for example: "it's forbidden to forbide things", "everything is illegal", "it is prohibited to cultivate anything", "consumption not allowed"
propaganda: A thing that for me comes up again and again with performance art is the idea of taking up space as a comment of power - the many signs here are clear representations of power. The pairing with the name of the setting (freedom square) bring a dark humor to it.
about the artist: Ewa is seen as one of the first generation of polish conceptual artists.

Red giants by Zuza Golińska, 2020:
propaganda: czerwomy olbrzym to często ostatnie stadium życia gwiazd, także naszego słońca. imo wspaniałe użycie formy i koloru, a inspiracja astronomią też zawsze bardzo mile widziana [red giant is the last stage of a star's life, including our sun. imo it's an excellent use of form and colour, and the astronomical inspiration is also always welcome]
Zachęta National Gallery of Art Great Hall Staircase by Leon Tarasewicz, 2006:
propaganda: I just love how it takes over the space, the modern abstract colorful art in the white classical marble stairway. How it mix the colors where the stairways meet. The way the splots make me think of Jackson Pollocks Drip paintings and the modern idea of putting the process of creating art not the polished finished product more into focus, how this kind of art installation makes me as the visitor feel like part of the art, how it makes me want to create art.
