Early-morning hater hours:
MARMALADE (2023): Fizzy Keir O'Donnell crime comedy-drama about a wide-eyed young hick (Joe Keery) telling his new jail cellmate (Aldis Hodge) about how his romance with a pink-haired wild child called Marmalade (Camila Morrone) became a crime spree. Familiar but very charming for its first 70 minutes, with a bright, poppy visual style and a vivid evocation of the feeling of falling for someone who pushes you out of your comfort zone in ways both good and bad, the film then loses the plot with a twist obviously inspired by the 1995 crime drama THE USUAL SUSPECTS, leading to a resolution that isn't nearly clever enough to make up for the loss of the story's original emotional core. A real disappointment after its enjoyable opening.
MONSIEUR SPADE (2024): Peculiar AMC/Canal+ co-production, set in 1963 and starring Clive Owen as Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade, now a retired but still cagey man of leisure living on the country estate of his late French wife (Chiara Mastroianni) in the rural town of Bozouls and acting in loco parentis for Teresa, the now-teenage daughter of Brigid O'Shaughnessey (Cara Bossom). Spade is drawn into a complex web of murder and conspiracy involving a mysterious young Algerian boy many people will kill to find, and who is somehow tied up with Teresa's errant father, Philippe Saint-Andre (Jonathan ZaccaĂŻ). Elliptical and very French, the show's sun-dappled atmosphere is pleasant, but the oblique way the story takes shape demands closer attention than it ever rewards, and the actual plot is both convoluted and unconvincing; at one point Spade aptly calls it "hokum." Furthermore, while the show is most enjoyable where it focuses on the hard-boiled American detective's uneasy integration into drowsy French rural life, it ultimately struggles to justify placing Spade so far outside his original milieu. It seems like creators Scott Frank and Tom Fontana wanted to create something approximating the Conan Doyle stories of a retired Sherlock Holmes keeping bees on the Sussex Downs, but Spade is really too thinly drawn a character for that, although Owen is better than one might expect. I also don't buy that Spade's exploits (at least vis-Ă -vis THE MALTESE FALCON) would make him world-famous like Poirot or Holmes.

Comedian and 'SVU' actor Richard Belzer has died at 78. Actor Henry Winkler is among those paying tribute to actor and comedian Richard Belzer, who has reportedly died at age 78. Former Saturday Night Live star Laraine Newman was the first to break the news of Belzer's death, calling him "one of the funniest people ever." Winkler, who was Belzer's cousin, re-posted Newman's post and added, "Rest in peace Richard." Writer Bill Scheft told The Hollywood Reporter that his longtime friend died early Sunday at his home in Bozouls in southwest France. âHe had lots of health issues, and his last words were, âF*** you, motherf*****,'â Scheft told the outlet. #yallstaysafeoutthere #letsgetintoit #kmp #killermovespodcast #crimecon #truecrime #truecrimecommunity @buzzsprout @applepodcasts @patreon @spotify @googlepodcasts @amazonmusic @iheartradio @podchaser @podcastaddict #richardbelzer #svu (at Johns Creek, Georgia) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co3ZbxMsofq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Richard Belzer dead at 78
Richard Belzer, an original Saturday Night Live cast member who became synonymous for his role as detective John Munch on Homicide: Life on the Street and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, has died at the age of 78.
Beltzer also made cameos as Munch on The X-Files, The Wire, Arrested Development, and 30 Rock, among several other TV series. In fact, Munch is the only character to appear on eleven different television shows played by a single actor...
Much like Beltzer himself, his character was known for his dry sense of humor, cynical outlook on life, and belief in conspiracy theories. (Beltzer himself was a noted JFK conspiracy theorist and wrote several books on the topic.) If there was ever a movie based on Art Bell, Belzer would have been a prime actor to play him. As a matter of fact, Belzer also made appearances on the show Coast to Coast AM..
Laraine Newman, Belzerâs longtime friend and fellow SNL cast member, confirmed his passing on Sunday. Writer Bill Scheft, another longtime friend of the actor, said Belzer died early Sunday at his home in Bozouls in southwest France. âHe had lots of health issues, and his last words were, âFuck you, motherfucker,'â Scheft told The Hollywood Reporter.
Now THAT is a way to leave this planet..

American Actor, Richard Belzer, dies at 78
American actor and comedian Richard Belzer has passed on at the age of 78. His death was confirmed by an associate and friend, Bill Scheft, who disclosed that the comic died on Sunday, surrounded by family in his home at Bozouls, France, PEOPLE reports. Belzer was popular for his role as Detective John Munch in the NBC series, âHomicide: Life on the Streetâ from 1993 to 1999. He afterwards reprised the character in âLaw & Order: Special Victim Unitâ from 1999 to 2013. Belzer was also a warm up comedian for the audience in the early seasons of the Saturday Night life show. In a statement by Dick Wolf, the creator and Executive Producer of âLaw & Order: SVUâ, Belzer is described as the âconsummate professionalâ who âbrought humour and joyâ into the lives of his audience. Wolfâs release read in part, âRichard Belzerâs detective John Munch is one of televisionâs iconic characters. I first worked with Richard on the Law & Order/Homicide crossover and loved the character so much, I told Tom (Fontana) that I wanted to make him one of the original characters on SVU. The rest is history âRichard brought humor and joy into all our lives, was the consummate professional, and we will all miss him very much.â Read the full article
