the more I think about it and rewatch his scenes, the more I cannot help but realize that Colin is coded as a neurodivergent character. At least, I can very clearly see how Luke Newton, a neurodivergent actor, is playing Colin as a neurodivergent character
a special interest in Greek mythology? in traveling? neurodivergent
taking people's word at face value without 'reading between the lines'? neurodivergent
not being able to read Penelope's feelings regardless of how 'obvious' they are? neurodivergent
brain constantly bouncing around from one idea to the next (as in the books)? neurodivergent
not saying the 'right thing' and admitting to having to rehearse important conversations? neurodivergent
all that rejection sensitivity and regret he had well over a year after his engagement blew up? neurodivergent
masking in public? the whole 'charming facade'? neurodivergent
the man straight up STIMS, I mean how often do we see him fidgeting or playing with something? he has an oral fixation like no one's business, always eating, rubbing his mouth, licking his lips
I just can't unsee it
and, one day, i hope our fandom is going to be ready to recognize how many of the things we've unjustly called him an 'idiot' or 'stupid' for is actually just him existing with a neurodivergent brain and how hurtful that can come across to us neurodivergent peeps who identify with him

( @quibble-auk just a blurb for the Redemption au, like way way in the future because I'm awful and cannot allow things to just happen organically in a story.)
-
“If you stop breathing Pipsqueak I’m gonna be pissed.”
Sunrazor huffed as she once again tried her best to block the blunt force of the cold wind, her partner didn’t need any more negative factors right now.
Said partner was hardly breathing, his much smaller body in the crook of the guardian’s arm. His face was darkened with bruises, his helm cracked and slowly oozing with his golden blood.
Sunrazor herself knew quite intimately how hard it was to crack that shell of his, she knew because she had tried.
Another growl of frustration slipped from her chest as she stared past the barrier of melted buildings in distaste. This wasn’t the best place to stop for the night, it was too low and anything could be hiding down amongst the ruins. Neutrals and any scavengers wouldn’t usually cause a problem for the titan, but right now she was rather busy trying to keep the rat who watched her back from freezing to death.
She glanced down at him once more, and her frown deepened when the pretender’s breaths remained shallow. He had been unconscious for three hours now, having been flung by one of the foolhardy science experiments the Decepticons loved so much. Its acidic blood made it difficult to kill up close, but  Sunrazor had enjoyed blowing it to bits.
Only after chuckling amongst the carnage for a moment did she realize Cometeater had never stumbled back from his flight across the field.
It wasn’t like him to not come back after being volleyed, he was no coward who hid while she finished things.
It had taken her too long to find him slumped and in an old fox hole, only the soft green of his armor along his side visible.
She had waited for a moment before grinding out they didn’t have time to hang around, only for the quick witted pretender to remain motionless deep in the trench.
Sunrazor would never admit the fear that had struck her, how she had dove into the hole almost destroying it to pull him out.
Nor the relief when his warm breath had fanned her knuckles.
Another gust made her twist her back to the brunt of the wind, cradling the much younger soldier to her chest as he shivered. She bared her fangs and growled again, the frustration gaining footing.
Fine, it would do.
The trek was short and brutal, the wind tugging at her frame and trying its best to shove her to the ground. Sunrazor cursed silently and not so silently as she went, her bright optics snapping up to scan the sky every other moment.
Eventually she found a crumpled curled building, she huffed angrily as the sun set. It would have to work, the small bundle in her arms couldn't take much more of this.
Cometeater could usually hold his own with the arctic nights, sometimes growing a downy coat amongst his cloak to keep the chill away. His own quick movements as they walked kept him warm, but now unable to even move the cold was seeping in past his protections. Sunrazor could feel the shivers wrack him.
The titan had seen Comet cold before, she knew it could kill him if he didn’t work to keep himself out of the chill. Unable to do it himself now, that left Sunrazor to do the work for him.
She tucked him close as she slipped into the shelter the corpse of a building created, snarling as she knocked her head on the roof of the arch.
“Ever loving, you owe me. So fragging big time.” She grumbled rubbing her helm as she clicked her spotlights on the lowest power to survey the cubby. It was barren and dark, but the wind didn’t reach. The air was still, the building so dilapidated that it curved over and bent, blocking them from view if anyone was to fly over or walk past.
She huffed again, tiredness cinching her shoulders. This would work.
Sunrazor settled slowly, being careful not to jostle the limp mech in her left arm as she sat. With a fluid movement she removed her gun with her free hand and set it beside her. The safety off.
Her lights clicked off once more as she watched the entrance, venting deeply.
She turned her sharp optics down on the shivering pretender and frowned. Carefully she inspected the injuries once more, large claws fighting to be delicate.
The irony made her half chuckle, no humor in it. Old memories that had once been fond darkened her mind as she watched the boy breath.
She stopped her inspection as the child shivered again, skin jumping at the cold air. Sunrazor noted that the shiver was less violent than the others, and slowly continued.
She, with the edges of her claws, checked the boy’s hands. The temperature and odd coloring on the tips of his fingers made her pause. While repulsed and curious she knew that wasn't a good sign, he was getting dangerously cold now.
He had once hissed when his finger tips grew too cold that he could lose one if he didn’t watch it, she had sneered and bared her teeth at the time. The stupidity of such a design decision annoying her.
The mech rolled his optics and had explained it meant his body was trying to preserve heat, deciding his fingers were not worth it.
Sunrazor still believed that was stupid, even as she took his small hands into her own large clawed one. Pressing them into her palm and holding him closer to her chest. He was about under her chin now, as she tucked him tightly in the cloak he wore.
Sunrazor could have lost her temper at how finicky the damn thing was, how small he had to be. But she found herself only cloaked in a tired worry, one she wished she didn’t have.
She had watched the boy swaddle himself before, teased him for the awkward position and weakness of his organic biology.
He had responded of course by saying next time one of her lights were blown off he wasn't helping her find it.
Punk.
Sunrazor cradled the boy close, hoping the heat from her engine might keep the limb loss to a minimum.
She did not allow her shoulders to relax for very long, optics firmly on the entrance. She substituted watching the boy’s chest rise and fall by pressing her clasped hand where his soft warm breaths brushed her knuckles.
Slowly the cold hands in her palm lost their chill, and the warm breaths still fluttered.
Sunrazor breathed a deep breath, tense and tired.
If those warm breaths stopped she really would never forgive him.
