We’re now allowed to reveal our full contributions for the @onceuponayoi​ fairy tales charity zine :D! This is the main of my 5 pieces (art + merch) and it’s inspired by The Enchanted Pig fairytale, which blends EotSWotM motifs with a Beauty And The Beast + Eros&Psyche flavour.  For my rendition I decided to play up the identity/shape-shifting/curse angle by picking a Venetian Carnival period setting and its masks - persona - symbolism. How much of Yuuri’s curse and piglet cues are real and how much of that is fueled by his own complexes and anxiety? ;) ---- I’m so glad we contributors could take part to such a lovely themed zine project <3 There is a lot of range in terms of characters and fairy tales in the zine. Check out the zine blog above and the contributors’ work!

If we talk Shoujo manga Ryoko Ikeda had sudden melting skull body horror in her period/historical/romance/queer Rose Of Versailles in the very early chapters ;D and then much later in the bonus stories something more pops up. Among the other manga ladies Chie Shinohara and Rumiko Takahashi deliveted a hefty dose of manga horror. And then of course we have Naoko's hubby. I dare say she influenced his Hisoka's character design in HxH ( he's Fish Eye ' s lost twin)...

and the man has a talent for the grotesque and horrorific. Cross - pollination at the very least

Oooh, thank you for the insight! Those all sound like very likely sources of inspiration. At the very least, we know Naoko was a Rose of Versailles fan. This also makes me curious about how long Naoko and her husband knew each other before they got married, since they obviously influenced each other’s work!

Alternatively: is it possible that some youma were initially humans who existed in the past? HMMMMM.

Somehow, the idea of a human becoming a youma is its own level of horror. But maybe, yeah, some of the youma are like, incomplete reincarnations or something. Maybe they were Beryl’s attempt at resurrecting people from the past, but they’re imperfect because only the ginzuishou can truly bring back the dead.

I can answer this one! It appeared in the August 1992 issue of RunRun. According to Wikipedia, Cutie Honey ran in the 70s and 80s, but a new manga series also started in 1992, so Cutie Honey might have been pretty topical when this came out!

Is 1) one lineart also acceptable for application pieces ( some woodblock printing /carved lynoleum prints and etching prints are 'born this way' so to speak )? 2) a Grayscale or monochrome piece ok?

As long as your pieces feature the requirements (1 piece that incorporates a complete, full background, 1 piece with a person’s entire body, and at least 1 piece featuring characters from YOI - how you combine these is up to you), that’s fine! Just make sure photos of your traditional pieces are high quality.

And remember: try to curate your samples so that they represent what you will deliver to the litmag. If those pieces represent styles you’d like to use for an actual litmag piece should you be accepted, go ahead! ^^
