Reposted from @stompboxbook Vintage & Rarities Preview - Week 21 Vince Pupillo Sr. - Harleysville, PA Vox Wah-Wah This silver Vox Wah-Wah dates from late 1966, and represents the earliest production version of the pedal built in the United States, predating the Clyde McCoy version. While an identical-looking (and -sounding) version of the pedal was built in England by Jennings Musical Industries from early 1967 to early 1968—and employed by the likes of Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page—only about 100 of these were actually built Stateside by the Thomas Organ Company. The hammered silver-colored metal of the enclosure would be replaced on the Clyde McCoy and V846 versions with black hammered bases, and a chromed treadle with the Vox name cut out of the rubber foot pad. The 9v battery-powered stompbox produces a heavily saturated fuzz, which can be modified using the Attack and Fuzz knobs. According to Provoost, two versions of this pedal were made—this one, the first, is distinguished by its aluminum diecast housing, while the second one is enclosed in a folded steel wedge. As the founder and driving force behind Disco Freq’s Guitar Effects Database— the ever-expanding online pedal site known to most pedal aficionados as simply Effects Database—Provoost has often spent untold hours trying to dig up the origin story of an unusual pedal that he’s found (or that someone has submitted to his website), only to hit a complete brick wall. Still, Provoost doggedly presses on with his pedal detective work—and with his own pedal collecting, as well. Now numbering over a thousand pedals, Provoost’s massive collection got its start on a fateful day back in 1996, when he purchased an Ibanez AF201 Auto Filter and an Ibanez OD-855 Overdrive II from a Belgian guitar store for roughly the equivalent of twenty-five dollars for the pair. Fascinated by the myriad of ways that the AF201 sculpted and modified the sounds of his analog synthesizers and drum machines, Provoost began looking for other vintage envelope filters, eventually amassing about fifty of them. In 2003, frustrated by the lack of available online information about envelope filters, he launched Disco Freq’s Envelope Filter Site—which soon expanded to include modulators, octave pedals, flangers, phasers and other devices. “After a while I started adding other types of pedals to the site, and also bought them to try them,” he says.
