Love potions have a long history from the classical world to the modern day, with strong literary associations, such as the Celtic chivalric romance Tristan and Isolde, which was revived in the 12th Century; to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Their associations with witchcraft also appeared as evidence of the practice of black magic in Witch Trials across Europe from the 14th to the 17th Centuries. Historical evidence appears in the Witch Trials of Béatrice de Planissoles in 1320, to the 17th century Parisian Catherine Deshayes, also known in the Parisian underworld as ‘La Voisin’, who was burned at the stake in 1680. The potions varied contents of blood, human and animal remains, alongside herbs that could prove fatal if used in the wrong doses, marked them out throughout history as powerful magic, alerting the inquisition, and witch hunters to eradicate the practice. Like other instances of folk magic, their practice continued in secret outlasting the inquisition. They are still however considered controversial to this day. As shown this original Love potion plague is made using antique salvaged wood, and a bottle cast from an actual antique medicine bottle. A unique historically inspired gift! Part Seven of Eight 7. Worms Our wriggly friends have a long medicinal history, even as late as 1718, worms were called for in Dr. Richard Mead’s Snail water recipe, containing snails, worms, berries and a mixture of herbs. Their association with love potions arrives from their connection to the earth, and its ancient link with fertility. Albertus Magnus’ 16th century work ‘The Book of Secrets of Albertus Magnus: Of the Virtues of Herbs, Stones and Certain Beasts’, calls for mixing crushed earthworms with periwinkle to aid attraction. All art shown is original and inspired by the history above. All bottles are handmade from molds cast from actual antique medicine bottles. Part One of Eight i). Human Remains Beginning our look into love potion history is the first ingredient, and like all self respecting corpse medicine, it’s human remains. To maximize the chance that your love spell would work, there was nothing better than adding some powdered bone, menstrual blood, and hair, ideally from both yourself and the intended recipient of your love. Failing that something stronger and more macabre was noted, in one recipe the author suggests the bone marrow and spleen of a murder victim. An actual historical case is that of the trial of Béatrice de Planissoles, who appeared before the Inquisition on Saturday, 26th July 1320, accused of blasphemy, witchcraft and heresy. Upon searching her they found items ”strongly suggestive of having been used by her to cast evil spells”. These included two umbilical cords of her grandsons, and for use in love potions, cloth soaked with her daughter's first menstrual blood, intended to be placed in potions and drunk by her daughter's husband to ensure his love; and the herb ‘ Eruca sativa’, believed to increase sexual passion. All art shown is original and inspired by the history above. The Dark History of La Voisin Love potions have a long history from the classical world to the modern day. One of the most well documented and legendary crafters of love potions was the 17th century Parisian Catherine Deshayes, also known in the Parisian underworld as ‘La Voisin’. Dressed in flowing robes embroidered with magical symbols, she supplied the court of Louis XIV’s with love potions, palm readings, horoscopes and incantations; as well as more nefarious potions to do away with husbands. La Voisin was also accused of heading a network of practitioners of black magic, and the use of babies' blood to create magic potions. Due to her accused involved in the murder by poion of between 1,000 and 2,500 people, La Voisin was implicated in ‘The Affair of the Poisons (l'affaire des poisons)’, between 1677 and 1682, where prominent members of Louis court at Versailles were charged and executed on the charges of poisoning and witchcraft. Alongside the 36 people who were implicated and executed, was La Voisin herself. On the 22nd February 1680, she was publicly burned at the stake in Paris. Inspired by the history of La Voisin, and love potions, original art as shown are now for a limited time available for sale at: www.ofgraveconcern.com/valentombsday Follow and like for more history and inspired gothic and macabre artwork. @ofgrave.concern #louisxvistyle #valentinesdayhistory #lovepotion #lovepotions #lovepotionsecrets #witchey #witchart #witchartwork #gothicvalentine #macabremarket #potionbottle #potionbottles #potion9 #potionart #bottleartwork #bottleartist #bottleartlovers #bottleartsy #bottleartandcraft #bottleartists #medicinebottle #medicinebottles #folkart #folklore #folkmagic #folkmagick #folkhistory #gothmarket #gothshopping #valentinesdayart https://www.instagram.com/p/CKhFxz5nhKR/?igshid=rvfhbc632ua5
