mukuro and junko both have antisocial personality disorder.(personally, i feel like “psychopath” may be a better term for junko, though i don’t typically refer to her as that because it’s not recognized in the dsm-5 as an official diagnosis and the concept itself is somewhat controversial in research due to its subjective nature, but… junko canonically displays high levels of narcissistic, borderline, and antisocial personality disorder traits, is extremely charming and charismatic, is skilled at interpersonal manipulation, experiences chronic feelings of emptiness, lacks empathy and authentic remorse, and is extremely sadistic, all of which are indicative of a high level of psychopathy. that being said i’ll be sticking with antisocial personality disorder because it’s significantly more researched and less subjective.)
mukuro is a textbook example of antisocial personality disorder whereas junko ranks off the charts on the psychopathy scale. junko is a vicious sadomasochist who prioritizes her own desire to see and experience despair over anything and anyone else while mukuro is simply amoral, meaning she’s apathetic to the suffering of others but doesn’t mind inflicting it in the slightest. this idea of good vs bad has literally never occurred to her because she simply doesn’t care. in contrast, junko revels in the physical and emotional agony she inflicts onto her victims. she is intentionally and enthusiastically horrible. she’s addicted to atrocity, to torturing others (and herself) which is objectively very horrible lol. none of mukuro’s murders can even hold a candle to the sadistic, excruciating executions junko herself designs and carries out on her classmates. while mukuro’s goal is to simply end someone’s life when she kills, junko’s goal is to prolong her victims’ terror and agony for as long as humanly possible, and to savor every last drop of that sweet, ever sought after suffering. she’s a sadist addicted to torture, and that is evil at its highest order.
there’s also the fact that neither mukuro nor junko experience authentic remorse in the way people without antisocial personality disorder do. to them, everyone (besides each other of course) are objects. both of them canonically have objects that they’re fond of, that they love even, but at the end of the day even their favorite people are objects. take yasuke for example. junko’s grief over murdering him revolves 100% around herself. we never see her grieve for what yasuke himself has lost—his future, his dreams, his life—only what she personally has lost. she stabs him to death so she can experience the despair of living without him as well as the self-loathing of murdering her own boyfriend, and the reason she’s able to do so is because he’s an object to her. he’s an extremely precious object to her but still ultimately an object. she loves him dearly, but she’s incapable of seeing others as equals, as human beings. if she were capable of seeing him as a person, she wouldn’t murder him solely for her own ability to experience despair. the same goes for the mutual killing game. she loves her classmates the same way she loves her teddy bear. this line of thinking is indicative of antisocial personality disorder. if she just had borderline or histrionic personality disorder, she wouldn’t be the ruthless sadomasochistic junko we all know and love. she’d just be some girl.
acting like mukuro is worse than junko is a bit of a mischaracterization of both of them. mukuro isn’t the one who decides to end the world for her own deranged pleasure, who decides to lock her classmates in a school and force them to murder each other, who lives her entire life longing to send others into a spiral of agony and despair, who comes up with this plan to torture humanity just Because. that’s all junko. junko is the one who asks mukuro to commit those senseless atrocities in the name of despair. if junko hadn’t wanted mukuro to commit mass murders, she probably wouldn’t have because she wouldn’t have had a reason to. it wouldn’t have benefited her, and unlike junko, she isn’t a sadist.
it should also be noted that junko emotionally abuses—tortures is a better term—mukuro when all mukuro does is love her unconditionally and completely. obviously that’s an extremely complex subject, but it felt relevant to throw in given that we’re comparing their wickedness in terms of severity. we never see mukuro abuse anyone in canon. is she a cold, calculated, remorseless terrorist? yes. do we see her abuse or manipulate anyone in canon? no. again, that’s junko.
junko and mukuro are canonically the most evil characters in the danganronpa universe for a reason. both of them have antisocial personality disorder, and both of them are devils. what it all boils down to is amorality vs sadomasochism, of which the latter is definitely more nefarious.
Tbh it drives me crazy when people call Junko antisocial (describing antisocial personality disorder) and don't focus on Mukuro who is 100% more antisocial than Junko.
Apart from the fact that Junko doesn't show almost any of ASPD symptomps. Ig chronic boredom and reckless/impulsive behaviours is the only symptomps she showed (but these also can be BPD/HPD symptomps which definetely fit her more)
That's all for first
For second, I hate when people are making Junko a freaking devil (I mean, they're right but it's not about this right now) and show Mukuro as a "little baby girl who didn't do anything wrong, she was so sweet and manipulated🥺" WTF DO YALL EVEN TRY TO WATCH THE SHOW AND THE OTHER DANGANRONPA STUFF.
Don't misunderstood me. I love Mukuro with all my heart but she absolutely wasn't an angel. Of coure, Junko was the mastermind but Mukuro was the same terrorist and helped her with pleasure and any guilt or empathy to others (if we talk about antisocial traits??). She was the same aggressive and verbally/physically abusive as Junko. If she wasn't worse.
No, just because she was dependent on Junko and developed weird Stockholm Syndrome doesn't make her poor and innocent baby, please don't make her this way.
I'm not trying to defend or make one of the sisters more or less bad, but between these two Junko was the one who felt real empathy, guilt and remorse. Mukuro absolutely didn't. So why Junko is the one who was "sociopath"?? No, not everyone who is a murderer has antisocial personality disorder.
#NOT saying people with aspd are devils btw#like at all. a personality disorder doesn’t inherently make anyone a monster#but anyways yeah#both of them 100% meet the criteria for antisocial pd#stripping junko of her emotional complexity because of her sadism and cruelty is absolutely a problem#in the same way that infantalizing mukuro and stripping her of her agency is a problem#they’re both mischaracterizations but the solution isn’t for those inaccurate perceptions to switch characters if that makes sense#but i agree in a general sense that people need to humanize junko more and humanize mukuro less#i will note however that there isn’t any compelling evidence to suggest that mukuro developed stockholm syndrome#she also never abuses anyone in canon#also sorry for the essay lmao#junko enoshima#mukuro ikusaba
