I've concocted another Rook who may be the first Rook I play for a reason stated below, and this time he's an Antivan Crow. I don't have a name for him yet.

I know for certain that he's Viago's half-brother through King Fulgeno the II and that his mother is a half-elven bard (not the Orlesian kind of bard).

He was raised with his half-brother Viago by House De Riva. He's supposed to have a Spanish/Italian blended accent, but sounds British for some reason, and he's going to romance Lucanis.

I must admit, I never thought that I'd choose to play as a human Rook, albeit 3/4 human with the slightest ear points.

Furthermore, his rivalry with Lucanis is going to lead to an inevitable romance. This Rook doesn't even know that he's 1/4 elven, let alone that his father is a King.

I may need to wait to play Aloisius until there is a mod released to let elves be taller than the purported 5' 8" (?) limit.

I'm going to want to play the game right away, and if I can't make my canon Rook a 6' 3" elf without mods, then I will wait to play him until a height slider mod exists.

Not only that, but I refuse to change my headcanon on his height due to a limitation on how tall elves are "supposed to" be.

having seen at least the rough outlines of all the romances now I have to say that I think emmrich's is probably objectively the best in terms of coherence and completeness of story arc (with the understanding that ultimately the 'best' romance is whichever one makes YOUR heart sing anyway so objectivity is a silly thing to claim that way, it just felt like it's the arc with the most well-paced focused content and the least dangling threads)... but lucanis' is my favourite haha. just. the whole kneeling before your beloved full of reverence but without any of the distance that usually implies??? his complete undramatic certainty and calm in every scene with rook after this, having spent the whole game caught between fear and longing???? mr. lives in a pantry but it says nothing about my psyche don't worry about it it's purely for tactical reasons that I keep myself contained in a small dark room not entirely unlike a cell, love among the parsnips -- finally coming to rook in their room and it's so comfortable and comforting???? after all the times rook supports and comforts him through the game he's finally able to return the same to them when they need it while being so calm and steady and it's so fucking sweet and feels so effortless and with no price attached?????? he basically assigns himself the role of your bodyguard and he WILL stab a god over it??????????????? the turn to protector (which was in his heart all along longing to get out and find a place) of it all????? he sounds like he's found himself unexpectedly stumbling into such a soul-lightening state of revelatory existential relief, full on 'you only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves' mary oliver style, and he goes and he shares that with rook and protectively envelops them in it when they're hurting??????????????????????????? hello for the maker's sake hello can anyone hear me?????

Side eyeing the people trying to invalidate Neve and Lucanis romance if you don't get with either of them. "Spite isn't involved so it proves he loves rook" He's the one to tell spite to stay out of his romance with Neve. He tells spite to "go play with beasts when Neve's hat comes off". Lucanis loves Neve and no amount of stomping your feet will change that outcome.

If you enjoy his romance fine. I'm not saying his romance with rook is any less valid. I'm not saying in every universe he romantically adores Neve. But it's incredibly annoying and misogynistic to try and insult/bring down Neve because she POSSIBLY can kiss Lucanis. You don't have to enjoy their relationship but that doesn't change it existing or being one with depth.

speaking of veilguard kind of going nowhere. i am so mad over there being no in depth epilogue. at least tell me what happens to the factions that are being led/guided by people rook influenced !!!!!! all these companions have obvious obligations outside of the veilguard, and they're all dedicated to the lives they lived before they joined this team, so of course they would go back. what effect did bellara deciding to keep the archive have on the elves? neve decides to protect dock town by any means necessary, so what does that mean for a blighted minrathous? everything to do with harding and the titans ????!!!! and solas just accepts being trapped because he's been 'outplayed' DO NOT MAKE ME LAUGH!!!! somebody has got to tell me what happens after the world gets 'saved' because the south in chaos, minrathous almost destroyed and the last of the elven gods being dead is like. crazy. and the companions just commenting things i already know is really not cutting it for me

i really like a lot of the banter in veilguard, it's one of the few times the companions can actually exchange some verbal jabs especially at the start of the game. i've said repeatedly that this game is lacking friction and i stand by that ☝️ i think the problem isn't that they all automatically get along, some of them don't at all in the beginning-- Davrin and Lucanis i think are the most obvious, and Taash and Emmrich as well-- but the thing is. Rook just speaks their therapy-speak to them and suddenly it's all fine. we don't see a lot of the friction in cutscenes or significant questlines, only in banter.

again there is Davrin and Lucanis of course who i do think are the most successful and organic relationship in the game. and that's because we actually get to see them go from being hostile to supporting and ultimately liking each other, and it feels born out of mutual respect rather than Rook forcing them to hold hands.

i like a lot of Bellara and Neve's banter as well, and they seem to spend a lot of time together at the start of the game when there's not that many people at the Lighthouse yet, and Neve consistently shows up for Bellara during her story. i also like Neve and Lucanis together, they're very cute. there are definitely friendly relationships that feel natural, but then there are moments like where Taash bulldozes over Bellara when discussing Mythal's and Solas's relationship, and Bellara isn't allowed to snap back at Taash for being disrespectful. she (+ elven Rook) are also never allowed to call out Harding for her racism, we either have to agree or just not acknowledge it and always be really really nice to Harding specifically.... and i think little moments of friction within actual main plot beats and significant cutscenes (like is done with Davrin and Lucanis) would have made a lot of the dynamics more interesting rather than just dancing around it and relegating it to banter or limited interactions you could ultimately miss if you don't have them constantly in your party/aren't constantly checking in at the Lighthouse. also companion approval should actually matter and they should be allowed to vocally disapprove of Rook's choices.

I was thinking...Lucanis is aware of the fact of how Grey Wardens die and I wonder if that adds to his emotional turmoil if Rook is a Grey Warden.

Because he already has to deal with his trauma and all that stuff we see in game, but I wonder if like, falling in love with someone who's a Grey Warden also adds to the angsts of it all.

He's already struggling with allowing himself to be open to these feelings and be open about his affections. But then that someone is a person who is destined to die probably before he does and in the Deep Roads, where he can't protect them. He can't cure the taint inside of them so he's somewhat destined to lose them. And also, considering how important of a duty being a Warden is, something he is seeing first hand, that would probably mess stuff too like, how would it even work with his responsabilities as a crow.

I just feel like there's some angst material there

I've been picking mostly only the essential flirt options with lucanis in the romance so far (I've personally found the dynamic much more natural and mutual when you do that, more like forming a solid friendship slowly and inevitably becoming something else and less like you keep pushing on him and getting little back b/c he seemingly just gets overwhelmed and goes into freeze instead), and I think rye is a pretty hard person to read at the best of times even though he's been Down Real Bad from pretty early on and their chemistry as people is naturally really good. so the way the almost-kiss plays out in this playthrough feels a lot like it has the added layer of lucanis realizing that no but for sure rook is flirting and not just being kind or a good friend* it IS actually happening it's not just wishful/fearful thinking!!! and then uh. maybe going a bit too hard a bit too fast in all the excitement at that revelation haha

*in lucanis' defense he has seemingly literally never had a friend who wasn't his cousin-brother before, under those circumstances I suppose some confusion is extremely natural if not outright expected lmao
