Day 35 - at Narváez
I took the van up another 14 kilometres along the forest track to the pass at almost 2000 metres and hiked the circular route that took in the peak of Santa Barbara at 2269 metres and gave a 360 degree view of the surrounds of the Baza massif. To the south east, and clear to see, is the Tabernas desert, which I had not long ago read about. This is an incredibly inhospitable place with practically no rainfall and temperatures this summer reaching 50C.
Tumblr media
Just before returning I met a guy walking the opposite direction, a philosophy teacher in the school in Baza. He was jealous of my early retirement, and has to work until he is 67. He had spent a few months in England, but said he could speak none, languages were a blur to him (I am hardly any better).
We retreated a bit lower to park-up for the night. I had at first thought of driving on, but soon turned the option down. Though a little busier, a handful of people, mainly cyclists and walkers, this is a tremendous place to stop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was a steep uphill on a track to the place I was stopped and mid-afternoon a middle aged local guy came up on his electric bike, duly panting and sweating, shouting encouragement to his partner some distance behind him, and not on electric bike - it was his 8 year old son. I refilled the boy’s water as it had long since been used, hard not to feel sympathy for him as he valiantly pursued his father’s Bosch powered Cube.
As ever on a Saturday, an evening of sport, chiefly on the radio, though for the big affair of the evening, a dodgy video feed from Vina del Mar of the Chile rugby qualifier...and what a game it was.
In the France 2023 World Cup Qualifiers Chile beat Canada to qualify for the Americas2 play-off place against USA next year.
This is the first time Canada have not qualified for a World Cup, and the first time Chile have ever beaten them.
The team had 7 of my old boys in it, and not just old boys, guys I know really well, as I taught and coached them between 11 and 16. They all did several of my bike trips and many rugby tours.
I congratulated the captain late last night and we had a humorous chat, all he wanted to do was remember the Rio Puelo bike trip. That is Martin Sigren, the blind side. Twins, but not identical, were second row and centre, Clemente and Domingo Saavdera. The difficulties I had with their parents when they were 11, as they were a year old in their year group and I had them play a year up. Domingo in particular in those days was small for his age, but very good.
Marcelo Torrealba at scrum half. The only one in the team now that plays his club rugby outside of Chile, for Austin in the America competition. A friend of mine assesses referees in that league, so via him, we have been in quite regular contact. Santiago Videla at 10, and the goal kicker. I remember the age group team he was part of was not so strong at Under 13 level. We played our major rivals twice inside four weeks, and after a 50-0 defeat in the first game it was hard to stop parents deciding to take a weekend holiday when the rematch came around. Videla, small for his age, was one that did play, and despite another defeat, though not so heavy, he stood out as man of the match from both sides. And Inaki Ayarza and Tomas Dusaillant on the bench, Inaki a couple of years younger than the others, and Tomas a couple of years older.
They play USA in the play-off next year. Should they make it through, and qualify for Group D, and walk out against England, it will be the greatest achievement and pride of my career.

Chile rugby… now.. and then.. (Santiago Videla standing furthest right, Marcelo Torrealba on tour in Antofagasta, and the two of them on Saturday)

Biotecture Technologies Careers
If you are looking for Biotii Technologies careers, then it is good to find out some biotii technologies careers analysis. First, it is important for a biotii technologies careers analyst to understand the biotii technologies careers. The biotii technologies careers provide people the opportunity to create and utilize biotii technologies for a variety of different purposes. In addition to that, biotii technologies careers also give individuals a chance to have rewarding jobs that they can use to support their biotii technologies careers. The biotii technologies careers are really good to check out because there are many different types of biotii technologies careers available. However, when biotii technologies careers get analyzed, it is very important for an individual to find out some biotii technologies careers trends.
There are two main biotii technologies careers that people should pay attention to. One biotii technologies careers is biotii technologies careers research in botany research. As is evident in botany research jobs descriptions, botany research is the study of, and the method by which the extraction of medicinal plants or other biotany products from locations where they grow is done. That biotany technologies jobs, as these jobs are called, are one of the most promising biotany technologies careers.
The biotany technology jobs that fall under botany research involve biotourishment. This biotourishment research will deal with the study and development of new medicines or biotourishments that will be able to help people who are in need of medical aid or biotourishment. The biotourishment career is particularly interesting due to the fact that it does not require a great deal of skill, but is instead very skillful. Basically, biotourishment research involves the use of plants to create medicine or biotourishments. A biotourishery biotourishment research job description will essentially describe the way in which this biotourishment research is carried out. It will most often involve using traditional plant biotourishment methods.
Another biotourishment career opportunity is that of biotourishment management. This biotourishment management is more related to art biotourishment management, as it seeks to enhance the aesthetic appeal of a specific location by means of the way that certain plants are grown or cultivated there. In biotourishment management jobs, the biotourishers will seek to enhance the visual appeal of a specific location. For biotourishment research jobs, biotourishers will use a number of different biotourishment technologies. Some biotourishment careers involve the use of biotourishment technology to enhance food production and presentation.
One of the biotourishment careers available today is biotourishment management research. This biotourishment biotechnology career opportunity combines biotourishment and biotechnology research. The biotourishment biotechnology career combines biotourishment and biotechnology research to improve food processing and presentation. Some biotourishment careers combine biotourishment biotechnology with biotourishment management to offer improved food processing and presentation.
There are many biotecture technologies that have been successfully used to enhance the food industry. Biotechnological techniques have been used for over 30 years. In the past biotecture was a separate field. However, biotecture technologies are often used in conjunction with biotourishment biotechnology. This allows biotourishment biotechnology scientists to collaborate with biotecture researchers. This is very important to the biotourishment biotechnology research because the biotourishment biotechnology scientist will be able to understand the needs of biotouragers as well as the biotourisheries that need biotourishment technology.
Biotechnological plants and biotractories can be located anywhere. Places such as the United States, Canada and Great Britain are some of the best locations to find biotecture research and biotractories. These biotecture crops and bioreactors are used to make foods, medicines, cosmetics, detergents, biodegradable wastes and biodegradable materials. Biotechnological plants are constantly evolving and growing to meet the needs of society. It is predicted that there will be over one hundred biotacture plants in the United States by 2021.
There are many other biotecture employment opportunities. Many biotecture positions are being supplied by the biotourishment biotechnology industry itself. These biotecture technicians are used to work in bioreactors and biotoxicology labs. The biotecturers who are providing the biotecture services are gaining high wages and are highly educated. If you are looking for a career that combines your knowledge with biotectures then you might want to check out biotecture careers.

Experiences of a Sales Engineer
On the 14th of July 2020, as a strategic relationship marketing student at George Brown College, I participated in a virtual marketing seminar with the moderation of Michelle Kanfer. Our guest was Brian Walsh. Brian Walsh is not only a part-time marketing and Customer Experience professor at Centennial College but also he worked more than ten years in Oracle. He was the customer experience architect using business to business and business to consumer mapping in Oracle.
Tumblr media
Brian started working with StructuredEmpathy.com in 2018. He provided consulting and training for customer experience for organizations such as Allianz, Capital One, Doctors Without Borders and Save the Children, among others. Learning about customer experience from Brian and listening to his experiences was really valuable for Strategic Relationship Marketing students. Besides, he has international experience which is inspiring for international students who are far away from their home and trying to be international. In the near future, most of us are planning to have a career in customer experience and we saw that the real-world customer experience is almost the same as George Brown College Strategic Relationship Marketing Postgrad Program taught us.
Tumblr media
Brian identified himself as a sales engineer. He had an engineering degree. We see that some of his clients are working in engineering areas. Brian combined his engineering knowledge with customer experience in marketing. Engineering allows Brain to have the technical designing ability. He uses it to designing the customer experience, journey mapping. He worked with clients such as Air Canada, McDonald’s, DuPont, Bosch, Cisco and worked with International Social Impact organizations such as the UN Refugee Agency.
The seminar was interactive thanks to Brian. He showed us a case about the MR machine customer experience case in hospitals. I and my friends had a customer experience lecture in our first term so we had a chance to learn about journey maps and personas. Besides, we found out several pain points after creating personas and journey maps and created solutions and improvements. Brian told us the MR machine case and showed a persona and a journey map. We talked about pain points and had brainstorm for solutions and improvements.  According to the case, the most important pain point was the noise of the MR machine and being alone inside it. Brain asked us for recovering this pain point and as a marketing seminar class, we found several solutions like painting the machine, putting stickers on it, etc. It was a great opportunity to have a real case and talking on it via leading by Brian.
Tumblr media
Learning in an interactive seminar with an experienced instructor in customer experience was amazing. Thank you Brian and Michelle for giving this opportunity to Strategic Relationship Marketing students.

South Korea retained the global crown in the 2019 Bloomberg Innovation Index, though improvements by Germany in research and education brought Europe’s largest economy to near-parity in the annual ranking.
World’s Most Innovative Economies
South Korea, Germany lead the index in 2019
In the Bloomberg Index, Germany almost caught six-time champion South Korea on the strength of added-value from manufacturing and research intensity, much of it built around industrial giants such as Volkswagen AG, Robert Bosch GmbH and Daimler AG. Although South Korea extended its winning streak, its lead narrowed in part because of lower scores in patent activity.

The awards are a result of a partnership between the French cosmetics company L'Oréal and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and carry a grant of $100,000 USD for each laureate.[1][2][3]
Each year an international jury alternates between life and material sciencesand selects a winner from each of the following regions:
Africa and the Middle East.
Asia-Pacific
Europe
Latin America and the Caribbean
North America (since 2000)
The same partnership awards the UNESCO-L'Oréal International Fellowships, providing up to $40,000 USD in funding over two years to fifteen young women scientists engaged in exemplary and promising research projects.[4]The Fellowship awards began in 2000[5] with a one-year award of $20,000 USD and offered ten awards until 2003. In 2003, the number of awards increased to 15 and then in 2006, the grant period extended to two years and the amount of the award increased to $40,000 USD.[6] In 2015, the name Rising Talent Grants was implemented
2017 International Rising Talents
In 2014, the L’Oréal-UNESCO programme has established the International Rising Talent Grants, awarded annually to 15 PhD students and post-doctoral Fellows. These young researchers are chosen among the former winners of the 250 fellowships awarded locally by L’Oréal subsidiaries and UNESCO Field Offices around the world. By recognizing their achievements at a key moment in their careers, the For Women in Science programme aims to help them pursue their research.[48][49]

Display technology has been completely revolutionized in the last half century. It has advanced from a black and white display the size of a wardrobe to a flat panel display with vivid and all natural colors, and has now evolved into a lighter and more flexible display. Dr. Jin Jang is a global leader in the development of these display technologies. Dr. Jang has made major contributions toward high performance flat panel and flexible displays, including the development of thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane technologies for active-matrix liquid-crystal display (AMLCD) and active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) displays. Especially Dr. Jang developed a low temperature poly-Si (LTPS) TFT technology by using a metal catalyst. The result was published in Nature in 1998, which introduced Dr. Jang as a leading scientist in the world of displays. He also developed a flexible oxide TFT and TFT gate drivers on a plastic substrate and received a George Smith Award in 2012 from IEEE. In addition, he commercialized the first four fingerprint TFT sensor.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media

Korea Ranks 5th in Terms of R&D Investment Size
S. Korea's R&D Spending to GDP Ratio Highest in the World
By Yoon Young-sil
November 28, 2018, 10:21
South Korea has reclaimed the number one spot in terms of the ratio of research and development (R&D) spending to gross domestic product (GDP). South Korea’s ratio was 4.55 percent last year, higher than Israel’s 4.25 percent.
The total amount of Korea’s R&D investment reached 78.8 trillion won (US$69.73 billion) last year, up more than 13.5 percent from a year earlier and the fifth largest in the world.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media

Why South Korea is the world’s biggest investor in research
The Asian nation is spending big in the hope of winning a Nobel prize, but it will need more than cash to realize its ambitions.
Mark Zastrow
01 June 2016 Corrected: 03 June 2016
It's a prototype of a device that might one day answer a major mystery about the Universe by detecting a particle called the axion — a possible component of dark matter. If it succeeds, this apparatus has the potential to rewrite physics and win its designers a Nobel prize. “It will transform Korea, there's no question about it,” says physicist Yannis Semertzidis, who leads the US$7.6-million-per-year centre at South Korea's premier technical university, KAIST.
Tumblr media
A prototype axion detector in Daejeon, South Korea.
South Korea is spending heavily to achieve its goal. In 1999, the country's investment in research and development (R&D) totalled 2.07% of its gross domestic product (GDP), just below the average for nations in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). In the latest figures, the country has stretched out a clear lead at the top. The 4.29% (63.7 trillion won, or US$60.5 billion) that South Korea invested in R&D in 2014 outstrips runner-up Israel (at 4.11%), as well as regional competitor Japan and the United States. The biggest chunk of the money goes towards applied research and development in industry, but the government has made major investments in basic science, too.

COMMENT  27 JUNE 2018
South Korean science needs restructuring
In 2017, just 6% of the national research budget went to projects led by small research groups. The rest went to big, government-directed ‘top-down’ projects in strategic areas such as information technology, robotics, materials and biotechnology.
Three problems
Bottom-up basic research is underfunded.  In 2017, only US$1.2 billion of South Korea’s $18 billion of government research funding went to bottom-up (independent) basic research projects by individual investigators and small groups (see ‘Budget breakdown’).
Tumblr media
R&D is inefficient. South Korea produces many patents, but few innovations. For example, in 2016, South Korea ranked third in the world for the number of patents it filed, after the United States and Japan2. Yet the Netherlands, which ranked sixth and has one-quarter of South Korea’s R&D budget, earned five times more in technology payments.
Public concerns are not being met. South Korea’s citizens feel that they are paying for science that is not addressing their problems. Severe air pollution is the main example. South Korea’s air has the highest concentration of fine particulates (PM10 and PM2.5) out of the 34 countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development: triple that of the United States and twice that of Japan. Neither the government nor the scientific community collects proper data on air quality or health impacts.

Every year at Columbus College of Art & Design, faculty members from each major select an Outstanding Senior based on their academic and artistic accomplishments. The Class of 2017 will graduate on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Mershon Auditorium. Read more about commencement here.
2017 OUTSTANDING SENIORS
ADVERTISING & GRAPHIC DESIGN
Sierra Clark
Since starting at CCAD, Sierra Clark has taken advantage of all of the opportunities that the school has to offer, working with Airstream and General Motors on collaborative projects, going to Germany while working on a project with Interbrand, and winning the best design award and best use of Intel technology award at a Hackathon event. The Newark, Ohio, native has taken home four ADDY awards and was featured as one of Graphic Design’s Students to Watch 2016. After graduation, Sierra wants to move to New York and pursue a career in advertising.
ANIMATION
Tyler Newby
Originally from Solon, Ohio, at CCAD, Tyler found a place where artists are encouraged to find their voice and master the tools necessary to tell their stories to the world. He has participated in orientation for three years and has served as a Resident Advisor for two years. Currently, Tyler is working as an animation intern at Freestyle Komics, animating characters and assets for social media campaigns. After graduation, Tyler plans to immerse himself into Columbus’ opportunities for ambitious, team-oriented artists.
CINEMATIC ARTS
Kelly Insinga
Kelly Insinga discovered her passion and a talent for making videos in a class at Dublin Coffman High School, and was excited to discover she could study Cinematic Arts and stay in central Ohio. Kelly’s natural abilities as a producer were apparent early in her studies. By her junior year, she had produced five senior video projects, as well as directed her own work. Kelly is a tireless advocate for Cinematic Arts, is a member of the Cinematic Collective, and has been on the President’s List six times. After graduation, Kelly plans to stay in central Ohio and seek a career in the Cinematic Arts.
FASHION DESIGN
Jenny Moon
Born in Florida, Jenny Moon’s childhood in Korea and Canada gave her a firsthand view and understanding of a variety of cultures. Jenny’s creativity and love of fashion led her to CCAD. In addition to her classroom studies, Jenny has participated in events such as the Condom Couture Fashion Show, where she won first-place recognition in 2016. Jenny works at David’s Bridal as an alterations specialist and is excited to begin her journey as a fashion designer upon graduation.
FINE ARTS
Jake Mason-Macklin
Jake Mason-Macklin, a Columbus native, creates work that addresses the politics of displacement through personal narrative, and intersperses painted marks, personal symbolism, and mediated images. An active and engaged artist, Jake has already built an impressive exhibition resume, with his work featured at MINT, Skylab, 129 Studios, and ROY G BIV in Columbus, as well as Pear Conarri Gallery in Mansfield and Rutgers University in New Jersey. Jake’s professional experience includes work at the Columbus Museum of Art, CCAD’s Beeler Gallery, and in commercial painting. Jake, who minored in both Philosophy and Art History, was also a student at the prestigious Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art in 2016.
HISTORY OF ART & VISUAL CULTURE
Veronica Spencer
Veronica Spencer was born and raised in Columbus, and it’s hard to say which came first: her passion for art or her passion for history. When she found that she could combine both at CCAD, she switched to the new History of Art & Visual Culture major her junior year. Her art historical thesis research investigates the portrayal of women in 19th-century art, and her artwork explores the contemporary treatment of women in society. Veronica works at Argo & Lehne Jewelers, where she practices skills she has developed at CCAD, including custom jewelry design, marketing, photography, and art curation. She plans to attend grad school, but first wants to take a trip to Europe to see the art she studied in college.
ILLUSTRATION
Jared Sanford
Since starting at CCAD, Jared Sanford, an Honors Program student, has racked up an impressive list of contributions and achievements, including seven appearances on the President’s List, and is graduating with minors in Creative Writing, Fine Arts, and Business. A Student Orientation leader, Jared was a Resident Advisor for three years and received the Director’s Distinguished Service Award in 2016 — when he was also named a CCAD Emerging Leader. Jared, lead organizer for the past two Art of Illustration shows, had work that was accepted in the National Society of Illustrators Student Art Competition, as well as in the Immigrant Narratives in Contemporary Student Art exhibition in New Jersey and Dresden, Germany. Jared will be an Assistant Graphic Designer at Abercrombie & Fitch after graduation.
INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Aura Escobar
Venezuela native Aura Escobar hopes to eventually return to her home country to help grow the design community there. Aura decided to pursue a major in Industrial Design because of its user-centered approach, as well as the broad career path it offers. In her three years at CCAD, Aura has been engaged with the college community, serving as an Academic Life representative in Student Government, as a leader of the Industrial Design Student Collective, as a Resident Advisor, and as a member of the Women’s Leadership Institute. Aura also took home first-place wins in a faucet design challenge by Pfister and in the FirstBuild Future of Cooking Hackathon, has been on the President’s List during her entire tenure at the college, and last year was named recipient of the Outstanding Student of the Latino Community Award. Aura would like to someday use industrial design’s approach to processes to improve businesses, services, and, ideally, government.
INTERIOR DESIGN
Shelby Maier
Shelby Maier sees design as the place where she can help others, create spaces where people feel like they belong, and construct environments that make others happy. Shelby was the recipient of several awards at CCAD, including the Design Group Scholarship and the Dean’s Scholarship. She is always happy to volunteer, give a tour to a prospective student, or take pictures of events and projects around the Interior Design department. Shelby has held visual merchandising and residential design internships while in school and plans to continue her current job at Angela Bonfonte Designs after graduation. Shelby hopes to someday own her own social enterprise, and she is already planning to collaborate with another CCAD alum to educate people on sustainable design techniques.
PHOTOGRAPHY
Kasey Vanden Bosch
Kasey Vanden Bosch grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, and spent much of her time exploring the landscape of nearby Hubbard. Her love of the outdoors and cameras lead her to pursue art at an early age. At CCAD, Kasey, an Honors Program student, has been a committed member of the CCAD family, serving as an Orientation Leader and Director of the Photo Collective. Kasey has been on the President’s List for five semesters and is a tireless advocate for her fellow students. She plans to stay in Columbus to pursue professional photographic work.

ANVIL release their new single & lyric video for ‘Nabbed In Nebraska‘, taken from their upcoming album ‘Legal At Last‘ which will be released on AFM Records on 14th February
ANVIL got busted, back then when they were touring in Nebraska & this is what their new pounding and powerful single is about. The reason? Find out about it yourself & bang your head!
When it comes to virtues such as endurance, unconditional commitment and a thoroughly down-to-earth attitude, Anvil are the measure of all things. Like few other metal acts, the band surrounding founding members Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow (vocals, guitars) and Robb Reiner (drums), plus bassist Chris Robertson have earned their laurels of blood, sweat and tears.
Since their 2009 documentary film The Story Of Anvil (Watch it online) which revealed the unvarnished truth about the music industry, the world has been aware that the day-to-day life of most musicians doesn’t consist of MTV Awards, Grammy ceremonies, red carpets, champagne and caviar but mainly of energy-sapping tours with little sleep, junk food and meagre earnings. Yet these difficult conditions have made Anvil what they are today: a band that stands rock solid in the turbulent waters of a musical genre that produces music like no other, by fans for fans.
So Robb Reiner refers with a sense of justified pride to Anvil’s latest release Legal At Last simply as “one more Anvil album”. Because quotes such as this show that the band has survived despite all adversities, losing none of its musical style or sense of reality. Kudlow, Reiner or Robertson would never use clichés such as “harder, faster, louder” or attempt to present their own accomplishments as superhuman feats. Robb Reiner is right: Legal At Last is simply an impressive new statement by a band that stands for the same values in 2020 as it did when it was first launched in autumn 1978.
This new album is very special to Anvil: “Legal At Last is mainly about two things,” Reiner explains, pointing to the cover artwork with a grin. “We celebrate the legalisation of the Anvil bong because Canada changed its marijuana laws last year, which means we no longer sail close to the wind all the time. That’s why the album title announces that Anvil are legal at last. Our fans have always known that, but the public at large treated us like criminals for a long time.” Kudlow adds: “Legal At Last is our way of telling the public: ‘It’s okay, Anvil are okay, you’re allowed to like us at last!’”

Kudlow is referring to songs which highlight Anvil’s great creative power. Be it the steam hammer flair of the title track, the unmistakably tongue-in-cheek ‘Nabbed In Nebraska’ with its driving mid-tempo groove which brings to mind the Anvil classic ‘Metal On Metal’, the critical undertones of ‘Plastic In Paradise’, the doomy orientation of ‘Said And Done’ and ‘Gasoline’, or fast and hard numbers such as ‘No Time’, ‘Chemtrails’ and ‘Food For The Vulture’: Anvil always get to the core of their characteristic sound. Which also applies to ‘I´m Alive’ and ‘Bottom Line’ – both rock numbers in the best sense of the term – and the comparatively catchy ‘Glass House’.
Talking of sound: For the first time in a career that spans more than forty years, Anvil have worked with the same producer on three consecutive albums. Like its predecessors, Anvil Is Anvil (2016) and Pounding The Pavement (2018), Legal At Last was produced by Martin ‘Mattes’ Pfeiffer (U.D.O., among others). Jörg Uken was in charge of mix and engineering at his Soundlodge studio in Rhauderfehn, Germany, where Pounding The Pavement was also finalised. Says Kudlow: “As a band, you need to surround yourself with people who share the same passion and commitment. Martin and Jörg have both, that’s why we make a perfect team.” And that’s exactly what every single note on Legal At Last oozes!

Hyperallergic: Updating Ukiyo-Prints and Medieval Art with Allusions to Fast Food and US Politics
Masami Teraoka, “Sarah and Octopus/Seventh Heaven” (2001) (all photos by the author for Hyperallergic)
HONOLULU — Masami Teraoka was just seven years old growing up in Japan when he saw a strange sight on the horizon: two suns, one from the east and the other from the west. It was the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II.
Now 81, Teraoka has become a contemporary artist known for creating strange, absurd sights of his own — merging traditional fine art styles and techniques with modern themes. His works can be found in over 50 public collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Modern, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in DC.
Masami Teraoka, “McDonald’s Hamburgers Invading Japan/Chochin-me” (1982)
Teraoka’s first major series after coming to the US from Japan in 1961, McDonald’s Hamburgers Invading Japan and 31 Flavors Invading Japan, examined the expansion of American consumerism culture worldwide with Ukiyo-e woodblock print images of Japanese geisha tripping over hamburgers and devouring ice cream. In the 1980s, he broached the AIDS crisis in a series of paintings featuring frustrated samurai and geisha wrestling with condom wrappers, literally blue in the face. It was Teraoka’s goal to shed light on AIDS at a time when doctors and politicians were covering up or avoiding conversations about the disease in the public.
Recently, Teraoka shifted his art style to create The Cloisters, triptych altarpieces in the style of religious Renaissance and medieval art, confronting topics such as Monica Lewinsky and the Clinton impeachment, clergy sex abuse scandals, artistic freedom in Russia, and the threat of nuclear war. While his past works may have evoked the likes of Utamaro and Hokusai, Teraoka’s new art draws from Brueghel and Bosch: giant, graphic murals featuring contorted figures including Pope Francis, Vladimir Putin, and the geisha Momotaro, in passionate, disturbing scenes.
At times, Teraoka seems like he’s hitting you over the head with the obvious associations in his work. But his subjects are so rampant in the collective public eye —from news headlines sensationalizing political sex scandals to giant billboards advertising fast food — that a loud approach seems fitting.
In March, Teraoka teamed up with Pussy Riot choreographer Viktoria Naraxsa and costume designer Masha Kechaeva for an experimental performance of Shakespeare’s Tempest at the Honolulu Museum of Art School. Currently, Koa Gallery in Honolulu is presenting a retrospective of Teraoka’s career as well as new work by the artist.

Installation view of Masami Teraoka at Koa Gallery, Honolulu
James Charisma: Where were you in Japan when you saw the atomic bombs being dropped?
Masami Teraoka: I grew up in Onomichi City, which is in Hiroshima Prefecture. But my sister and I were evacuated to the next town because Onomichi was a middle-sized city and thought to be targeted by air raids. It wasn’t because I think it was too close to an American POW camp. We would see them while going to school and we would say, these people are so tall! And blue eyes.
All the kids liked the MPs because they were friendly, they gave us chewing gum and chocolate. My dad used to say that we are all humans. Wars are only between governments; we don’t really have to be fighting each other. That was his philosophy, so I think he made it comfortable for the Americans to visit. My mom used to cook potato chips. When she gave some to the Americans and they ate them, we couldn’t believe it. When I came here, I learned everybody eats potato chips.
JC: You seem fascinated by junk food. You have an entire series dedicated to ice cream and cheeseburgers. What inspired that?
Masami Teraoka, “The Two Suns Series/Cherry Blossoms and Koko Head” (2017)
MT: After I came to America in 1961, I met this girl who asked if I heard of hamburgers and I said no, so she cooked some for me. It was delicious. So when everyone was talking about McDonald’s, I tried their burgers but was disappointed because they were tasteless. Later, I had gone to Vancouver and saw so many [Golden] Arches. I thought, oh no, they’re invading Canada too? And Japan. Eventually I knew they were going to invade all over the globe but I didn’t want America to bring such a lousy hamburger worldwide.
This was during the flower child generation where everyone was recognizing their own background. So I thought if I was going to paint, why not paint in the format of my cultural identity? So that’s what I chose: ukiyo-e woodblock print style. My series, McDonald’s Hamburgers Invading Japan and 31 Flavors Invading Japan, was because I knew that American capitalism is so invasive all over the world, I didn’t want hamburgers to wipe out ethnic cuisine or Disneyland to be all different levels of culture. Another series is New Views of Mount Fuji Series/La Brea Tar Pits, which is about what a businessman might bring back from America to sell in Japan: La Brea Tar Pit as Disneyland.

JC: Your work has always tackled issues of the various eras, from AIDS in the 1980s to the sex abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. Is response to your work usually positive or is there ever backlash?
MT: I would say that 95 percent is positive, only a few people have actually complained to me. It’s all based on fact, so not even the Catholic Church can accuse the work of being incorrect. And the attitude I have is that I’m not interested in making something easy just to please my vision. I’m interested in what’s going on regarding individual liberties and freedom of creative expression. I’m trying to express anything related to human rights.
One of my triptychs featured Monica Lewinsky and the Bill Clinton impeachment trial. I depicted one of the lead investigators in the mural — Kenneth Starr — and I actually had a chance to meet him at an ACLU event. I told him I painted him in the piece and he said he was interested in seeing it. So I showed him a folded, four-page brochure of the composition while he was standing there with his wife. He was amused. He used the word “extraordinary” and I had to ask my friends what that meant because my English wasn’t that good. I was so happy to hear that because if he didn’t like my painting, he could’ve told the security guard to arrest me and I could still be in prison.

JC: How did you connect with Pussy Riot?
MT: My primary gallery director in San Francisco, Catherine Clark, gave my Ascending Chaos book to the manager of Pussy Riot at a performance. I was interested in their group and where they were coming from because I think we share thoughts about human rights, gay rights, same sex marriage… I later contacted Viktoria [Naraxsa] and asked if she’d be interested in coming to Hawaii because I was working on a Pussy Riot-themed exhibition. She said yes, when? This was maybe three years ago when that dialogue started. It took a long time to get to the March performance.
JC: Sexuality plays a huge role in your art. How does it influence you?
MT: Human sexuality inspires me. When you start going out with a new partner, you let go of preconceived ideas and attitudes to get to know that person. If you don’t fall in love and get to know someone on a sexual level, you miss this opportunity to open your mind to different individuals and cultures and ethnicities. It’s a window for learning.
JC: What are you learning about and focusing on now, in your latest works?
MT: One is North Korea. The way I see, their leader is a crazy, spoiled boy. But he can still actually wipe out the Earth. And that means all our education about humanity and everything won’t have any relevant meaning. Two suns … it’s nonsense. With an imminent nuclear threat, nothing makes any sense. Everything becomes nonsense.
Masami Teraoka continues at Koa Gallery (4303 Diamond Head Road Honolulu) through November 9.

This is the part of tricky questions, where the officials want to understand whether you are using your studies as a possible immigration route. A high percentage of students leave their studies altogether upon arrival and take up jobs in Germany.

No, I haven’t.
