Sora pasted on his biggest, most reassuring smile as he crouched to his and Riku's weekend guests' eye level. Their parents had just dropped them off and they looked a bit unsure, with bitten lips, wide eyes, and fidgeting. They reached for each other's hands to hold when he got close, so Sora shifted his weight back on his heels and leaned away a bit so they didn't feel crowded. He understood. New places were scary when you were a small person. "Okay, girls, we're going to have a fun three days!"

"I guess," Emerald Dress with Yellow Daisies whined as if physically pained, throwing her head back so her fishtail braid slipped back behind her instead of laying over her shoulder and down the front like her sister. Yellow Top and Emerald Skirt with Kelly Green Tights Underneath. Roxas and Axel had made them easy to tell apart if Sora had been sure who was Dulce and who was Salena in the first place. "I miss Turkey already."

He'd been expecting an "daddy" or "pop," but he supposed he understood. "Well, Aunt Kairi is watching Turkey so he can play with Astrophe. Just like you're here so you can play with Ripan."

The explanation seemed to work for the moment, Emerald Dress mollified a bit, though she sighed, "This weekend is gonna last forever!" and got pinched by her sister, which Sora was going to reprimand but decided to let slide and just keep pressing forward with a happy face to show he was cool when he heard the word "Rude!" whispered.

"Ripan's room is at the end of the hall. You can put your stuff in the guest room across the way and then stop in to say hi. He has a mini pirate ship with a full crew, a whole bunch of stuffies I'm sure he'll want to introduce you to, and Data Sora is always putting new games on the computer.  I'm sure if there's something there you want and Data Sora doesn't have it, he'll get it for you as long as it is for kids to play."

"We can't play until we finish today's homework," Kelly Green Tights informed him primly.

"We have until Monday," her sister argued.

"Pop said to get it done early, and then we have fun!"

Sora's attention ping-ponged between the identical small faces. "I can help you with your homework if you like. I help Ripan with his, so I'm an old pro."

"It's math.  We're learning to add. Can you add?" Tights stared him straight in the eye and roasted him with a casual ferocity Sora wasn't sure he'd ever experienced before despite his long history of being made fun of by his friends.

"I can even do times tables," Sora assured the small girl instead and then stood to his feet.

"You have been doing third grade homework!" she responded in awe befitting of a first grader and the balance was restored.

"I'm going to play with the pirate ship," Emerald Dress announced, unimpressed with times tables, hoisting her glitter flower backpack higher on her back. "Coming, LeeLee?"

"I do like pirates..."

"Go ahead. We'll have homework time after dinner. We're having fish sticks and macaroni."

"Does it have a face?" Dress, Dulce probably if LeeLee the tights was Salena. "Don't like fishes with the face on."

"The fish sticks?" Sora asked, confused. "No, it's...sticks."

"Yeah, everything is mushed into a stick including the eyeballs and the bones," Salena explained with the voice of a sage.

"That's not how it works either," Sora explained, too late as Dulce began to scream as soon as her sister had stopped speaking. "We could have pizza?" He gave up defending the fish sticks as a battle he didn't even want to start. Ripan had been a good teacher for conserving energy for issues that were worth it.

Dulce was instantly pacified. "Pepperonis!" was shouted as a battle cry. Then, manners suddenly popping into their minds, both girls curtseyed in eerie, practiced unison and chorused, "Thank you, Uncle Sora for having us in your home," before running off shrieking, "Pepperonis!" once more.

Sora shook his head and then went to report his own brutal murder and the menu change to his husband. He fooled himself into thinking there would be at least twenty minutes of peace, before he was proven wrong by an indignant shout.

"DAD! WHY ARE THERE BABIES TOUCHING MY PIRATE SHIP? THEY JUST CAME OUT OF MY RUG LIKE SHADOWS!"

I guess I’ve never really thought that much about my opinions on him- never really had the time...

Let's see.

He’s always been there, watching out for everyone and making sure everyone was alright. Even when we were kids, he was always there- We never really had to worry about anything with him around. I mean, it's not like he would do everything for us, he just helped to show us how to do things on our own and if we needed help...well, he would do it without even asking because he isn't the type to give up on people or leave them behind.

Honestly, I don’t know how he does it. He makes it look so...easy...like it doesn’t even phase him. He just shoulders everything and faces things head-on without needing anyone else. He has the strength to protect what matters most to him and he knows that- probably better than anyone.

In some ways, I’m kinda jealous of the guy. I mean- he knows who he is...who he’s supposed to be. He knows how to get things done and how to solve problems.

You look at a guy like Riku and...it’s kinda hard not to admire him, you know?

I know it must have been hard to even get to where he is now, and despite everything he's been through, seen, and experienced- he still manages to stand so tall.

So I guess if you're looking for my opinion on Riku, well I'll put it this way.

He’s always been my best friend... but somehow...

He’s something more than that.

He pushes me to be better, he challenges me and he knows exactly when and how to bring me back to myself. He encourages me in a way that others don't- he doesn't do it in a way that makes me feel bad about myself or like a lesser version of myself...he acknowledges that I am trying and understands, even accepts me even when I'm not sure how to do that for myself. He's also been a near-constant source of support when I’ve needed it most...

And even when we weren’t together, I always have this feeling in my heart that he is still there with me.

Having him around, I dunno, I just- I feel...lighter...happy to have him by my side. He makes me feel like...like I could do anything.

Riku...he's...

|| I'm sorry for the long wait on these two asks, they were among the first ones I ever got and I was excited to draw out an entire comic in response- everything was planned out down to the letter...but life got in the way and I ended up not having the energy to do those plans. on the fourth day of halloween my true boo gave to me...a kingdom hearts ficlet

(Technically this is a present for @borndeaddd but I was going to write more and then I didn't, but, well, enjoy babe. I don't know what I'm doing, per usual.)

It’s a stupid thing to say. It’s also a lie.

He knows it. Kairi knows it. He thinks even Roxas and Axel might know it.

But he’s said it like it wasn’t a lie — like it wasn’t a stupid thing to say — and now he can’t back down.

He’s staring at Kairi because he can’t look at Riku, which is maybe the first time tonight he hasn’t just been staring at Riku but —

Kairi’s eyes are saying ‘oh honey, no’, and he’s fairly sure she can see the panic in his eyes, but she’s not saying anything or calling her a liar and that’s because she’s the best.

And, to be fair to his stupid, stupid lie, they are going to marry each other if they don’t find anyone else before forty-two. (It had originally been twenty-five because at eleven years of age, twenty-five had seemed like the reaper must’ve been calling, but at fifteen they’d been going through a Douglas Adams phase and also realized just how close twenty-five was.) Though, to be fair with Aqua and their gender studies major and their constant lecturing, Sora isn’t going to be surprised if they end up changing the contract again — still written in crayon, just with increasingly better handwriting and spelling — to require them to live together in platonic life mate harmony, or something.

Unless they need to get married for taxes.

(At eighteen, taxes still terrify Sora — though not as much as admitting his crush to his crush after having played two and a quarter rounds of circle of death, which is really how he got here in the first place.)

And maybe if Riku wasn’t so cool, and older, and cool, and handsome — and wasn’t just himself, then Sora would’ve admitted to his crush when he was asked in the truth round — but he couldn’t and now he hasn’t.

Instead he’s said he has a crush on Kairi, and oh no what if Riku thinks he’s still in the closet?

He’s not, he’s really not, and his friends and his family know but he only went to one of the Spectrum meetings when he’d first got to campus and seen how biphobic they were to know he didn’t want to deal with that. He’d been so hopeful that the queer group had called itself ‘Spectrum’ because yes, it was a whole spectrum, but then he’d heard the president bemoaning all the sorority girls who were just ‘going through stupid bi phases’ and how he hoped they didn’t show up to many meetings and Sora had noped right out of there with Kairi.

Sora knows that Riku goes to the meetings, because the meeting rooms at the student union have glass walls, so he’s still got some hope that Riku might be Sora-sexual.

But what if Riku knows that Sora is lying about his crush on Kairi and assumes it’s because he’s still in the closet? But it’s not like he could’ve said he had a crush on Axel or Roxas — he’s not sure what they are but there is a zero percent chance claiming to have a crush on either of them would end in anything but something awful for him. And obviously the whole lie was to not admit the truth and no one else was playing circle of death with them and —

He’s an idiot. He could’ve named someone not playing circle of death with them!

‘Help me’, he tries to convey with his eyes to Kairi. She studiously avoids meeting his gaze.
