The more I think about it the more I get why Shi Qingxuan tries rope all his friends into being femme for a while. Because who in heaven is there to have girl chat with when the gender fluids in that direction? Ling Wen??? The woman whose idea of an exciting night is collapsing onto any nearby cushioned surface and going unconscious for 16 consecutive hours?
Would she answer the question "do these robes make my ass look fat? 🥺" earnestly? Would she pick up her communication array call in the middle of the night just to gossip and discuss what the FUCK Mu Qing puts in his hair that makes it so luscious and silky?? Would Ling Wen take her to a Chappell Roan concert??? Didn't think so.

what infuriates me about a lot of stories, is that if you create fic where, say, the main male character is reimagined as female, so many men’s stories are genderless and therefore interesting and complex and if you put a woman in it the story doesn’t change at all. I mean, Harriet Potter? Basically could be the EXACT SAME STORY only Harriet rooms on the girls side of the dorm and probably befriends Hermione before having to fight a troll (MAYBE. I have shared rooms before, it is entirely possible that they barely spoke a word to each other until The Troll Incident). If Superman was Superwoman, would the story change that much, truly? There are a few that might not work out the same, like Captain America, and would need to be adapted. Final Fantasy VII might need some tweaks, because I have no idea if ShinRa allowed women into their military, and if so, if it was under the same terrible conditions many of the women in the our, real, military face.
would lord of the rings or the hobbit be any different with women? No. Well i mean probably because “i cannot be slain by any man” so like that, and i’m not sure about the aragorn thing cause im like 34% that middle earth humans do not practice equal primogeniture but whatever.
But men??? in a chick flick???? or in a girl’s novel???? no, that wouldn’t be done, it would be considered so weird. or out there!! like, the brotherhood of the traveling pants, where four dudes found a pair of jeans that fits them all perfectly and they all ship the pants around the globe to each other as a good luck charm. It’s ridiculous because men don’t have these issues with jeans and they don’t need to spend nearly the same amount of time as women on physical appearance.
Or a disney movie where the prince is treated badly by his evil stepmother until she wants to cut out his heart because his beauty is too great and he runs off and becomes the housekeeper to seven dwarves until he gets tricked into eating an apple and gets put into a glass casket until his true love appears????? no. because that’s silly. Men Act, Women Are.
or like female batman???? like, bryce wayne watches her parents die and grows up cold and determined to change her city, to use her money and power to be batwoman, the dark knight, adopting her ‘robins’, dick and jaime and timothea and damiane and they could all fucking stay the same with all that complex motivation and characterization and friction and grey morals.
But you know. you fucking know. if someone wrote a revised version of batman like that bryce would be some eternally 20-something socialite who sleeps around (because that’s what empowered women do) and her schtick as batwoman is to wear a skin-tight outfit with a lot of cleavage and she gets information from her male enemies by seducing them and her female enemies are all fighting her over the love of some dude. also she’d probably get raped for the ~drama~ of it, or she would rape someone and the writers would be like ‘oh no, that didn’t happen, he enjoyed it!’ and it would be terrible and probably damiane would be born because Ra’s like, raped her or secretly stole her eggs and fertilized them or something else awful and it would never be discussed ever again.
and bryce would fight with her robins because she is threatened by their budding sexuality and you know for certain that jaime was probably raped or a child sex slave or a child prostitute because god forbid a child have dead parents and be homeless and starving and stealing to survive while being a girl. also timothea would be a quiet little mouse until bryce forces her ot be, i dont know, sexy or something and then she gains confidence but it’s interpreted as her being a ‘bossy little bitch’ and all of her boyfriends would use the ‘kissing you to make you shut up’ technique. damiane would be sexually precocious but no one would find that horrifying, just silly that she’s trying so hard to ‘look like a woman’.
also bryce would be wearing impractical high heels (and so would the robins) and it would be lauded as ‘feminist’ because she’s being hyper-femme while ‘kicking ass’ despite the fact that that’s not how it would work at all in real life and she is being created by people not the void and it’s not feminist to insist that women should be capable of feats of impossible badassery at any moment in deeply impractical outfits.  that women are defined by sex appeal and tits and perfect, flawless, makeup at all times.
ugh i’m so mad. because if you write a story about men and change the pronouns you have interesting and complex characters and if you write a story about women and change the pronouns you have a joke
