A Genocide by Stealth

The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide is a 1948 convention designed to help define genocide so it can be identified and prosecuted.

It defines genocide in the following way:

Any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such: killing members of the group; causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; [and] forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

I bring this  up because the UK response to the coronavirus has been a little odd and the stats are very strange.

Roughly 35% of those seriously affected (the ones needing medical intervention) belong to ethnic minorities. The incumbent government is rather good at vilifying and discriminating against ethnic minorities, as we have seen with the Windrush scandal and the so-called ‘hostile environment’ policies of the past decade, but policies which indirectly target minorities?

How else do you expect 13% of the population to make up 35% of those admitted to intensive care? The first 10 UK doctors to die of the virus were all of black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds; it’s probably not poverty. The odds of this happening by random chance, by the way, are 0.027 -> roughly 1 in 3700.

There has been no evidence to suggest that this discrepancy is related to the virus affecting non-Caucasian patients worse than Caucasians - it’s not some strange sci-fi targeted virus - so what strange quirk of the British response is causing this? 

Why are the deliberate actions of the Conservative Party causing massive harm and death to non-Caucasians?

Ho fatto almeno 3 spensierati boomer tornare a ragionare. Sto diffondendo questo articolo. Sto amplificando la furia contro i "piani" del governo su Twitter per quanto possibile. (è orribile ma penso davvero che sia solo per causa di hashtag come #BorisTheButcher e #ToryGenocide che ci sia una speranza di almeno arginare il danno.)  E sto a casa. Per fortuna è piuttosto facile per me. Molti di miei amici stanno facendo lo stesso, almeno per quanto possono.  Non c'è molto altro che posso fare.

Vorrei poter fare di più. Ma a parte stare a casa, non dovrei dovere farlo.

Vorrei -  vorrei, vorrei, vorrei, così tanto, che il governo chiuda tutto. Ovvio, il motivo minore è l'effetto psicologico penso avrebbe per me e i miei amici.

Ma anche solo sul livello personale, onestamente penso sarebbe molto più facile sopportare la solitudine e concentrarsi su tenere alto il morale se tutti lo facessero, senza questa senso di imminente catostrofe là fuori.

Non sono troppo spaventata di ammalarmi. Se non fossi troppo sfortunata, probabilmente sopravviverei. (Detto ciò, non posso che ricordare quella volta che ho avuto una veramente brutta influenza, abbastanza grave da dover essere reidratato con una flebo, e poi  ci sono voluti mesi per riprendermi completamente, avevo sintomi come M.E ... ma, almeno ora so come prendermi cura di me stessa meglio. ) Ma sono molto spavenata di assistere a un massacro. Forse quasi un genocidio.

Spero che forse il virus avesse inizio prima di quanto si creda, e allora  siamo - tutti -  più vicini al picco di quanto sembri. In caso contrario è molto difficile non aspettarmi il peggio.
