WIP Wednesday - Aristeia

I've been tagged a bunch in past weeks, but had nothing to share, but now I do! So it is me who will be tagging this WIP (nearly) Wednesday! @throughtrialbyfire @saltymaplesyrup @dirty-bosmer @tallmatcha @gilgamish

Fandom: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Rating: T (blood and violence) Category: gen Genre(s): Adventure, Homer retelling Main characters: Borgakh the Steel Heart, the Orcs of Mor Khazgur

Summary: Borgakh is a dutiful daughter of Mor Khazgur, an orc stronghold in a remote corner of the Reach that has existed since the Merethic era. Expected to someday become the shield-wife of a distant chieftain, Borgakh tries to uphold the Code of Malacath as best she can. But when her father, the chief of their stronghold, goes missing while on a quest for vengeance, the suitors that show up to vie for his place cause no end of trouble and threaten the strength of Mor Khazgur. Borgakh soon finds herself traveling far from home across the Druadach Mountains to find her father.

Sharamph stood, head thrown back, face to the sky, as if she was going to try to embrace the very stars that were now twinkling overhead. The wind was still, there were none of the usual sounds of the Reach: a distant sabre-cat scream, or call of an owl. The world was holding its breath.

“Great Malacath, hear your children!” Sharamph’s voice boomed out through the small valley, echoing off the rock walls that flanked Mor Khazgur.

She turned to face the altar, and reached into the satchel she carried at her waist.

“Great Malacath, we beseech you!”

Borgakh’s flesh prickled and a cold finger of dread traced down her spine as Sharamph lifted the object she had withdrawn: the briarheart.

“Great Malacath, God of Curses, our blood boils in rage!”

Sharamph placed the briarheart in the bowl of troll fat.

“Great Malacath, we call for relief, for counsel!”

She touched the torch to the bowl of troll fat. It spat and spluttered for a few seconds, then caught. When the flames licked above the rim of the bowl, Sharamph tossed in the lavender. The sweet perfume of the flowers was overwhelmed by the bitter, acrid smell of the burning troll fat and briarheart, and the smell made Borgakh’s eyes water; she blinked furiously, and tried not to sneeze.

The silence stretched longer, the only sounds the hissing of the flames on the altar. A few of the assembled men shifted nervously. Olur’s grip on her hand was crushing, but Borgakh matched it, pressing into his side.

She saw Ansug start to open his mouth, a mocking sneer twisting his features.

Every torch, every campfire, and even the flame on the altar snuffed out at once, plunging the valley into darkness.

I'm just going to go on and on about

if you'll let me.

He's not really -obscure- per se but he is relatively ignored so let me just give him some love!

So I appear to be writing the majority of Athis things at the moment. Obviously my main fic features him as a POV character. I also have a couple that I'm quite proud of actually AH.

First is Sea of Storms from a duel. A Pirate AU.

Next is Little Dragon which part of the polycule AU with Tel/Nyenna/Athis actually being happy.

Love and its Decisive Pain is an extra chapter more or less for World, featuring Athis musing and worrying over Nyenna.

Next isn't one of mine but is by @archangelsunited! Originally a tumblr post but is now on AO3. Reader/Athis!

Next one is more pirates! by @paraparadigm. Athis is a Navigator <3 So smart, so handsome, so brave. Ah.

More from @archangelsunited -- this one is a bit on the tragic side but the voicing is phenomenal.

3. One of the best takes you’ve ever seen

The-Dragonborn-Is-Dead trope but done in the phenomenal way that BetterBeMeta wrote in Foe-Tongue: A Historical Fiction.

Here's a piece of the writing that I love. It doesn't mean anything out of context but OH MY GOD DOES IT ACTUALLY MEAN EVERYING.

“Valamand,” [Wyrenna] whispered, “do you have a comb?” He said, “Yes, of course,” and gave it to her. She used it to tidy up where she still was bed-frazzled, tied her hair neatly as she walked up the stairs.

I fucking love this fic. It's my favorite in any fandom, ever in existence. @paraparadigm rec'd it to me earlier on. (: I wanna write like them when I grow up.

13. Recommend a fic (can be your own!) that features something you wish was written about more.

Okay so in this case I am just over the moon about all of the overarching pulling of lore into a fanfic that KB has achieved in such a phenomenal way. I'm talking about @kookaburra1701's fic Aristeia and ALL THE ORC CULTURE. ALL OF IT. I'm HERE FOR IT. More Orcs please, OCs, NPCs, NPCs-Become-OCs. HELL. Yes.

Here's a quote I love particularly from chapter 1 regarding some cultural things that I've been -really fast eyes- over:

“Olur tells me you bloodied your sword today.” Bagrak’s voice was even, as if she was remarking on the weather. Borgakh paused in spooning stew into the bowl before straightening up and presenting it to her mother. Bagrak did not take it. “I bloodied it for Mor Khazgur, mother,” Borgakh said, throwing her shoulders back and looking Bagrak in the eyes. “One of the Reachwomen and a briarheart tried to steal the deer I shot. Olur and I extracted our Blood Price.” “I am not sure one deer is important enough to be covered by the Code,” said Bagrak. “When their clan discovers them killed with orc weapons it will cause more trouble than one deer is worth. Now you will have another enemy to watch for when you are outside the walls.” Borgakh clenched her jaw in frustration, but kept her tone respectful. “They would have never been happy with one deer, and then they would have known Mor Khazgur was weak. What if they had wanted Kharag too? Is a good horse not covered by the Code?”

Oh Skyrim...

I booted up my old three year old save to see what my character looked like. I went into breezehome to visit my wife Borgakh. She isn't there, but Aela is. Aela is calling me darling and such. Aela is a lovely woman, but is not my wife, what are you doing in my house? I don't know what on earth happened but I had to download a divorce mod to get rid of the false wife. Then I had to reload cause my real wife ran off and disappeared from the game right after the wedding. Oh Skyrim...

From the strongholds, I mean. And they don’t normally come to the cities, they just take care of their own business. I could give him one of the chits but it wouldn’t be worth anything to them.” “You’re telling me the ki— jarls of Skyrim do not collect the Emperor’s taxes?” “Not on strongholds, Captain.” “Wish I could run out to the mountains and live like a wild beast with a score of wives and not have the taxman come calling,” murmured one of the soldiers behind Borgakh. Olur’s hand tightened again, pinching her under her cowl where her neck met her shoulder.

what (or who) convinced y'all to get into tes?

i think when I was about 15 a family friend showed me skyrim since i was already into fallout, and she was showing me her dunmer assassin with her little house and her wife and I was like 'yea that looks pretty cool, i might try it out sometime'

however as soon as she mentioned there were cat people I immediately went 'OH FUCK I need this game RIGHT NOW' lmao I don't even remember if I knew anything else about the game! the existence of the khajiit was all I needed to know (and that you could be gay)

how many videogames have pretty orc girls?

Not enough! In terms of mainstream games I can only think of Gobbet from Shadowrun HK and Borgakh the Steel Heart from Skyrim. Indie games probably represent better - Battle Chef Brigade has some good orcs and Salting the Earth is a game specifically about romancing orc ladies. Other than that, hm...
