A Labour of Love- or, How to Write a Song That Makes Me Want to Lie Facedown On The Floor
Four decades separates the respective rises of singer-songwriters Hozier and Bruce Springsteen, nearly as large as the gap between the worlds in which their public images reside. According to popular myth, the former is the tall, near-ethereal Bog Man, half in this life and half in the next, who rose from a fae-inhabited woodland after 1000 years of slumber to find he was able only to mourn his lost love through song; the other is the Boss, a hardy yet compassionate working-class hero permanently streaked with the blood and sweat of a marathon shift, toiling endlessly alongside the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, hard-rocking, earth-quaking, booty-shaking, Viagra-taking*, love-making, legendary E Street Band. The domains of fen and factory may appear to be irreconcilable, but in reality the musicians have many things in common:
Broadly speaking, they both create wildly variable mixes of folk and rock, often with particularly strong Irish and African-American influences.
Their lyrics are poetic and commonly reflect on social issues with a progressive voice.
Songs about romantic relationships typically portray them as complex and difficult but remain respectful, sometimes near worshipful, of women.
Their characters yearn, long, pine and crave more often than not.
They both really like to use religious imagery.
They enjoy and return notable amounts of wlw love.
Representative of many of these are Hozier’s “Work Song” and Springsteen’s “Maria’s Bed”, two songs with close thematic parallels. Each is ostensibly told from the perspective of an exhausted labourer who dreams of returning to his lover. In a twist, however, “Work Song” is a melancholic love story, while the upbeat “Maria’s Bed” is a subtle tale of death; the opposing moods are complex reflections of these underlying narratives. These songs have Hozier and Springsteen skilfully intertwine the concepts of love, death, freedom and spirituality, creating two deeply moving portrayals of desire** that never fail to eviscerate the listener after 10pm.
Though the songs differ in overall lyrical structure, the similarities in narrative are evident from the first few lines:
Boys, workin' on empty / Is that the kinda way to face the burning heat? / I just think about my baby / I'm so full of love I could barely eat
Been on a barbed wire highway forty days and nights / I ain’t complaining, it’s my job and it suits me right / I got a sweet soul fever rushing round my head / I’m gonna sleep tonight in Maria’s bed
The audience can gather that each character works in a harsh environment where they are exposed to the elements. Their work is likely in manual labour, but the details are skimmed over because the narrators don’t particularly want to think about the details. Pushed to their limits, each instead copes by preoccupying himself with thoughts of his lover, though it makes him literally lovesick.
I’d never want once from the cherry tree / ‘Cause my baby’s sweet as can be / She gives me toothaches just from kissing me
She gives me candy-stick kisses ‘neath a wolf-dog moon / A sweet breath and she’ll take you, mister, to the upper room
The worker recalls his lover’s kisses as being vibrantly sweet, sweeter than nature. So, too, is her company- in contrast to the grim situation he is currently in, she is something to be savoured. Sugar cravings, an innate biological compulsion, come to mind; his hankering for her is likewise deep-seated and out of his control.
The reason for such devotion, the narrator reveals, is that she saved his life at a time when he had already resigned himself to death. He believes he was undeserving of such a deed; Hozier describes “three days on a drunken sin… she never asked me once about the wrong I did,” while Springsteen’s character recounts being “burned by angels, sold wings of lead / then I fell in the roses and sweet salvation of Maria’s bed”. In other words, his state of ruin was at least partially self-made, and her care seemed completely inexplicable. He eagerly returns her love, perhaps feeling that it’s the least he owes- but he still doesn’t quite understand where it came from.
True to both songwriters’ styles, these lines are direct allusions to the idea of redemption in Christianity: God sheltering a faithful person from the literally hellish consequences of their wrongdoing, through no merit of their own. However, the worker is notably dismissive of traditional doctrine:
My babe would never fret none / About what my hands and my body done / If the Lord don’t forgive me / I’d still have my baby and my babe would have me
I’ve been out in the desert, yeah, doing my time / Searching through the dust for fool’s gold, looking for a sign / Holy man says “hold on, brother, there’s a light up ahead” / Ain’t nothing like the light that shines on me in Maria’s bed
His faith rests not in God but on his lover; she is his religion now. Her act of grace already gave him a new, better life- he doesn’t need biblical promises when her love is tantamount to anything heaven might offer. This implication conveys a staggering depth of feeling, particularly to a religiously raised listener. Spirituality is, at its core, emotional; combined with the values and customs of religion, it is a force that can exert incredible influence over a person. The worker doesn’t reject spirituality itself- it’s an intrinsic part of him- but he has put all that power in the hands of the one he adores. It may make him vulnerable to her (that’s love!), but he is certain that she will give him the strength he needs.
Theological redemption also has close ties with death, as its benefits aren’t meant to be reaped on earth. Instead, the love, glory and freedom that are promised are relegated to the afterlife. Historically, the presumed ecstasy of achieving this gave death a sexual connotation; after all, if a lover could take the spiritual place of God, then perhaps sex could take the role of death as a gateway to paradise, far away from a life of pain. Work Song embraces this analogy, explicitly linking spiritual fulfilment to the pleasure of sexual intimacy:
When I was kissing on my baby / And she put her love down, soft and sweet / In the low lamplight, I was free / Heaven and hell were words to me
The equally suggestive Maria’s Bed allows the audience to draw similar conclusions, but it accomplishes this using a far less serious method: regular mentions of the titular bed, wink-wink-nudge-nudge. Yet this light-hearted sauciness is something of a misdirection. It’s easy to gloss over the song’s references to water, but they are strong hints that support an alternative reading: Maria is not a woman, but a river***. The story, from this perspective, then becomes much more sombre- the worker is a dying or suicidal man who wishes to have his body laid at the bottom of a river that provided for him in life, and whose real desire is for the peace he hopes to find there in death.
Got on my dead man’s suit and smiling skull ring / Lucky graveyard boots and a song to sing / I keep my heart in my work, my troubles in my head / And I keep my soul in Maria’s bed
This darker interpretation arguably makes more sense than the face-value love story, as it resolves some figures of speech that otherwise seem out of place. Even so, the more obvious reading is no less meaningful****; in fact, the coexistence of these narratives is what makes Maria’s Bed an almost perfect thematic inverse to Work Song.
When my time comes around / Lay me gently in the cold dark earth / No grave can hold my body down / I’ll crawl home to her
Hozier uses the finality of death to illustrate the strength of a man’s desire for love- his narrator embraces his own passing as he is certain not even the most permanent of barriers can keep him from his lover. Springsteen, through the personification of the river, uses the language of romance to demonstrate how fervently a man might desire death- his narrator embraces his demise because it offers a reprieve from life, just like a lover would.
All that said, no amount of lyrical analysis will reveal the clearest point of contrast the songs have: their music.
Work Song primarily draws from blues and folk music, both of which have roots in historical work songs used to coordinate physical tasks as well as boost morale. Reflecting this musical heritage, instrumentation is fairly simple, with the steady rhythm of claps and piano chords punctuating hard. It is slow and heartfelt, almost mournful; though there’s no mention of time frame, the audience has the sense that the worker still has a long way to go before he can return to his lover.  This notion comes largely from the song’s circular structure. By ending with the same music it opened with, its story is also implied to finish at its beginning: with the men hard at work in the “burning heat”, and no true relief in sight. This is furthered by having little development over the course of the song- though iterations of the chorus are more intense than the verses, the arrangements underlying both sections barely change. The worker, it seems, is never quite far enough from his reality of hard labour, and never close enough to home.
On the other hand, Maria’s Bed is relentlessly optimistic, driven by a strong forward momentum. Where most modern songs have their choruses as their most powerful feature, here the wordless refrain (“hey hey, la la la li li li li”) acts more like a transition between verses, keeping the story moving. The jaunty fiddles that fade out are quite different to the introductory guitar and organ, suggesting the worker’s situation has developed for the better. In addition, the orchestration builds continually, only briefly pulling back before the music culminates in an extended musical outro. Many of the instruments work in counterpoint, each additional layer contributing to an air of an unrestrained joy that is further spurred on by Springsteen’s high hums and whoops. The linear musical direction and overall impression of good cowboy fun results in the feeling that, unlike the singer of Work Song, the narrator is already on his way to his heart’s desire- though, in light of the lyrics, what this actually means is somewhat ambiguous. Are those final echoes him moving out of earshot… or his ghost ascending to the “upper room” of heaven?
We may not know for sure how either of these stories end, but we can feel the aching hope for something better. This longing is an emotional line that runs all the way through both Springsteen and Hozier’s work, though it never seems to get old. Combined with explorations of love, faith, life, death- that’s why we return to their music again and again; they are experts at playing on old motifs and universal themes in new and creative ways, their crafted melodies and narratives touching wild and industrial hearts alike.

* I am legally obligated to include all these adjectives.
** Maria’s Bed seems to be sadly obscure even among fans; the one and only online forum discussion I have seen about the song refers to it as “not that deep”. Having written this whole essay- if Springsteen himself said that to me, I’d laugh in his face.
*** A random internet comment I can’t find anymore backs me up on this. It even specified that it was about the Santa Maria River in California, as quoted “from Bruce”. Obviously an infallible source 😊
**** It’s important that “[drinking] the cool clear waters” can totally be the description of oral sex you thought it was.

Smile Power Day
Smile Power Day is the perfect excuse to shine your pearly whites and show off those dimples. And no, a smiley face or an emoticon won’t do! Not today, at least. The smile is a symbol of happiness and vitality, a beacon of hope and an expression of emotion. So just for today, drop the ‘:)’ texts and flash them a real smile. Go on….
What is in the power of a smile, one may ask. Well, when we smile we automatically trigger our own autonomic nervous system, which releases endorphins into our blood, to trigger a happy hormone. That being said, smiling at someone else, offers a chance for them too to feel that same happy hormone. It’s a win/win situation isn’t it? Start everyday with a smile and smile at strangers, it’s good for your immune system and it brings a little cheer to an otherwise possibly dismal day (especially Mondays ey?).
The history of Smile Power Day
Nobody knows who came up with the idea of dedicating a whole 24 hours to the involuntary contraction of the zygomatic major muscle, but one thing is certain: we’re the only creatures on the planet that can do it. Whether fate smiled upon you or not, you can always find a good reason to smile. So grin from ear to ear, look on the bright side and smile your troubles away, just like the great Dr. Seuss suggested: “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” You may be wondering just exactly how smiling helps us mentally, but there are many reasons to suggest that it does.
We smile involuntarily, when thinking back on fond events, or of those we love, which is certainly a good reason to celebrate. If you’re needing some more reasons as to what makes smiling such a dandy little tool, you can soak up the following information: it makes you more attractive, so they say, smiling attracts the opposite sex and highlights both your personality and radiates warmth to others. Smiling is also contagious; the only time that something contagious is good for you – it encourages and promotes a happy and healthy atmosphere and brings a sense of community. So when you’re that person who starts a chain of smiles today, be proud knowing you have created a little bit of worldly joy!
Why is smiling so good for us?
Smiling lowers your blood pressure; now this is mostly due to the fact that smiling releases that happy hormone we spoke about before. It temporarily relieves stress, so smiling more frequently will put your body into a state of relaxation. This is the same for your health, yes, smiling can in fact be a pain reliever! Allowing your body to smile and release that tension could in fact help you and if you’re skeptical on this fact, then take a look at nitrous oxide, better known as ‘laughing gas’, which has been around for years, a practical and ingenious idea to help ease your pain, so there’s even more reason to start smiling now isn’t there?
How to celebrate Smile Power Day
If you want a little boost to your self confidence, let’s say you’re waiting on that impending job interview, you might want to smile to yourself beforehand. Smile in the mirror at yourself, a power smile instils a sense of confidence into you. Continue your power smile as you shake hands at the interview and continue with a sense of calmness and contentment. Smiling can and will make you look younger, forget about the laugh lines, the most troubling of all facial wrinkles is of course the frown lines which can make us look tired and withdrawn. Smiling allows you to work those facial muscles to keep them supple, practice it as part of your skincare routine and cut back on the botox bill, it’s not rocket science, it’s smiling! 😉
Smile Power Day will also make you question just how much you smile as well as who around you takes the time to smile too. Now, sitting there all day at your desk with a grin like a cheshire cat is not going to really have much impact, however, it should get a few laughs from your fellow co-workers! You’ll start to notice the effect it has on those around you when you bring a little bit of joy into the room.
Depression itself impacts just how much happiness we feel, and many psychologists and therapists will encourage the practice of mindfulness and smiling more, connecting and feeling a more internal peace with yourself. Smiling forms a bond and connection between two people; whether that’s when they say thank you to you for holding the door open, perhaps it’s a smile you both share at a checkout or in a queue, or from far away, but it’s undoubtedly a very intimate and special bond that should be celebrated more often!
Challenge yourself, not just on Smile Power Day but also on other days of the year, to smile at least once to yourself, to a stranger or to a family member. See the response it has and the connection it forms; especially if you take time to let the smile last a little longer than usual. Remember, we all need a bit of encouragement, sometimes!
Smile Power Day is connected to the act of kindness and giving and being able to appreciate the power, not just of a smile but of a gesture! What would the world be without a few gestures? Smile Power Day is meant to be shared with loved ones and friends alike. You can take them all out to a stand-up show, put together an organised smile-off, eat smiley-glazed cupcakes, drink some Smile Cocktails, and paint smileys everywhere because everyone and his brother loves them. Most importantly, when you crack a smile today, remember that it’s not Smile Power Day unless you can put a smile on someone else’s face, too.

✨Moon 🌙 Signs Psychic Inclination ✨
✨🌙  ✨
Moon in Aries, makes for someone who likes to play with fire, literally or figuratively. Energy work is a possibility, as is being a psychic warrior. This is a placement that tends towards emotions geared more to the self than others. There is a certain naive courage displayed. There is a lot of emotional energy displayed, sometimes more than others can easily handle for long periods. There is a certain pioneering spirit and a wish to be first, foremost or in front of the crowd. There is an abundance of good ideas, but the attention span can be quite short, and projects can be abandoned as soon as something new and interesting comes along.
Moon in Taurus is the Moon's exaltation sign, and the Moon is extremely strong and beneficial in this sign. It is solid, comfortable and very secure. Sometimes so secure that there can be a reluctance to move or leave the comfortable environment. Psychic abilities are possible, though more in terms of a good intuition or good practical ideas. Music and song may be strong interests. This placement would work well with crystals, rocks or other things of the earth. This might be a natural gardener who makes magick with what they are able to grow, which would be more in the areas of useful or edible things. This can indicate someone who will stick to most anything, and can be excessively stubborn if pushed or rushed. This can also indicate an "Earth Mother" type. There may also be a strong love of cooking. This person can have very good natural shields.
Moon in Gemini can indicate many abilities in many areas, sort of jack-of-all-trades, and master of none. This can also indicate a short attention span, though how interesting the subject is will determine how long the attention is focused upon it. There is a certain amount of verbal ability, and the person may be able to talk their way into or out of most anything. Reading, writing, talking and communicating are strong aptitudes. There might be a good ability to visualize and there may be an ability for telepathy, with or without words. This placement may also confer the ability to know who is on the phone before you pick it up, or to be able to know what someone is going to say before they actually say it. This can also confer a good "people sense" and gives the person the ability to get an accurate first impression of people irrespective of what sort of face they may be showing to the world. Working with poppets might be effective. Reading cards can be effective, but care should be taken to not read into the cards what might be wished for when the psychic abilities aren't working on demand.
Moon in Cancer is the sign it rules and is at its strongest. It can however make for very strong emotions and psychic impressions and the need is to learn to control and shield from unpleasant or unwanted influences. Otherwise this person can pick up on the emotions of others like a sponge. They make a good psychic barometer and natural medium. People with this placement need time for themselves and also a special place away from the world to rest and recharge their batteries. This can be the placement of an excellent cook, or one who really enjoys food. This person can understand the magick in food, and how good food and a congenial eating environment can help restore the soul. This can also be the placement of a natural empath, one who can sense or project emotions. If you can engage this person's sympathy they will do most anything for you. They can let their emotions get the upper hand, and will sometimes overextend or let others take advantage of their good nature.
Moon in Leo is one who can shine if they are secure and happy. Otherwise the emotional need is for adulation and recognition. This person can also be an energy worker, and they can create more permanent energy structures than some of the other signs. This person likes the grand gesture. They also communicate well with children, though they may not have any of their own. Love is a constant interest, and love spells can be a specialty. They may have a certain amount of native luck, which might be honed to getting better odds than may naturally be expected. They do better when the sun is out, they can soak up sunshine and use it as an energy boost. They work well in crowds and places where there are lots of people, especially if they feel in control in some way. Working with cards, dice, and other objects for divination can be effective.
Moon in Virgo can be a craftsperson, one who creates with their hands things which are magickally useful. This can be the placement of the herb worker. Also one who understands the medicinal qualities of plants, foods, stones and other things. This placement can indicate one who is a natural healer, though this will usually manifest through using things, rather than pure laying on of hands. The interest will be in practical uses for psychic abilities. This person needs to understand what or why before their psychic talents may manifest. This sign is the esoteric rulership of the Moon, so the Moon's strong emotional and psychic nature is tempered by the practical and analytical nature of Virgo. This placement also works better at night, for the night is the Moon's natural time and the Moon can shine more brightly without having to compete with the Sun. Card reading is a possible skill.
Moon in Libra can also be a gardener of beautiful and decorative plants. They may also be herbal, helpful, nourishing and beneficial, but they have to be beautiful also. This placement can use their psychic skills to make life beautiful or harmonious or in balance. This can be a placement of a psychic warrior or peacemaker. They will prefer peace, but will resort to war if it is necessary. This placement can use color to psychic advantage. The emotions are preferred to be in balance, and strong emotions either happy or sad can be disconcerting. The use of jewelry, color, feng sui and other aesthetic disciplines in psychic settings are beneficial for this placement of the Moon. This Moon is happiest when things are pleasant, pretty and in order. Care should be taken that the strong emotional desire to please is not sacrificing of telling the whole truth, glossing over things which might be upsetting or unpleasant.
Moon in Scorpio, is in its fall, a placement which can make the emotions strong but not necessarily beneficial. There is great psychic ability but it can also bring upset and discord. This placement tends to make for someone who seeks extremes of emotional experience. It can also lead to paranoia and the need to know everyone else's secrets without divulging any of their own. There can be a talent for communicating with the dead. This placement can have very strong psychic impressions, and needs to learn to be diplomatic in divulging what was discovered. Sometimes the insights can be into the more unpleasant sides of life, and that can be difficult to deal with. There is a great need for solitude in the life, and mistrust can cause this person to shut down faster than anything. There is an ability to be a psychic warrior, but of the type which is an all or nothing type of warrior. The higher nature should be cultivated. Sex is of endless fascination and sexual disciplines can produce psychic results. This is also the Moon of the true occult researcher, delving into "those things which man was not meant to know".
Moon in Sagittarius can be fun-loving and active. There is a love of the great outdoors, and of learning and of discourse. This can incline the person to religion and its outward expression. There is a love of other cultures and a possible facility for language. This can also lead to a bit of a know-it-all streak in the personality. Psychic archaeology and dealing with other cultures (especially long-lost ones) can manifest. Also the ability to astral travel. Work with the Akashic records and other planes of higher learning are possible. Ethics are a topic which is of interest. Working with and discovering universal laws is another possible area for study. Esoteric philosophy and the comparison of various disciplines are interests which might be explored. This is also the big ritual Moon placement. The love of pomp, ceremony and pageantry is great.
Moon in Capricorn is in its detriment, which chills and represses the emotions. There may be psychic ability but it usually isn't developed or used as there is little "real world" value in it. Psychometry is a possible talent. Also treasure finding. This is the ruthless Moon, and can cause the person to act in ways which might seem expedient or practical, yet range from possibly insensitive to actively heartless. There is a strong practical and business sense. and if psychic ability can be disguised as a business hunch, then it will be used and developed. There may be an inclination toward ceremonial systems, and the person may collect psychic credentials. There will be an ability to shield naturally which if developed can become formidable. There is a strong need for solitude, and this person may end up as a hermit at some point in their life.
Moon in Aquarius is the least emotional and most detached of all Moons. It is rational and logical, yet also subject to sudden emotional insights and surprises. This Moon loves people, its just the individuals it has trouble coping with. There is a facility for working with groups and organizations. Telepathy can manifest, but it might be dismissed as mere intuition or coincidence. Telekinesis is also possible, but to train the skill takes more time and work than these people are usually willing to devote to it. There is a knack for networking and organizing people into groups, and people with this Moon may end up being the founders of groups dedicated to psychic study. Certainly there is an inclination to working with others rather than solo. This can also be the Moon of the wild eyed eccentric, and the ability to predict the future may be strong, though not always reliably accurate. There is also an ability to tell when another is telling the truth or lying, which can be uncannily accurate.
Moon in Pisces is extremely psychic, sometimes to the point of being unable to turn it off or to operate effectively in the non-psychic world. The need to learn to shield is strong, and if this cannot be learned, then it might be better to turn the psychic faculties off, than to be subjected to constant outside influences. This person is also an excellent psychic barometer and possible empath. There can manifest a natural healing ability, up to and including the laying on of hands. This person is extremely sympathetic and understanding, sometimes being unable to detach themself from the problems and concerns of others. Most any psychic skill is possible for this person, but they need to learn discipline and control or they can become overwhelmed with impressions. This can be good for a trance medium, but care should be taken to avoid possible possession. Art, music and dance are things which are beneficial for these people. Solitude is naturally sought, but care should be taken to not cut oneself off from others totally. Small groups are the best medium for socializing rather than large crowds.

Interview with the Muse
- What is your Full name? Include any maiden names, aliases, or nicknames.
Rostam Morley. The Third. Esquire.
You can shorten it if you really want, but people usually just call me by my full first name. I prefer my full name. Kerry is the only one to call me “Tammy” and she remains the only one because no one else is allowed to. When I was a kid – sometimes even now – my mom called me “Pancake” as a pet name. They said that was the first English word I spoke during breakfast one day. Not even “hello”.
- When is your birthday? Do you know where you were born and at what time?
14th of May (Ordibehesht 24, Persian calendar). Some village outside of Shiraz, Iran. Don’t know what time.
- What is your star sign? Do you know your Chinese Zodiac too?
Taurus. Explains why I’m so good at bullshitting.
- What is your earliest memory that you can remember?
Fuck if I know.
- Where was your childhood home? Was it more urban or rural?
My adoptive parents’ place was a little outside the city. I’d say it was kinda more semi-urban than suburban. No white picket fences or anything like that, just an old type of house that fit the five of us, somehow. I don’t know what type they’re called. Ranch?
Tumblr media
(In other verses his family lived in a semi-detached row home.)
Tumblr media
- How was your childhood in general? Did your parents treat you well? Did you have a lot of friends?
It started off weird as fuck. It wasn’t easy to get me from my country and the details are blurry at best. It might be better if I don’t know the whole story. But after I came here to my family, it got better. My parents worked hard for me and when I started talking freely they couldn’t get me to shut up. So I got a lot of friends soon enough. Between the neighborhood kids and school kids, I had no shortage of people to play with.
- How was/is school? What is your favorite and least favorite subjects? What were your grades on average?
School was school. I didn’t get perfect marks and I didn’t want to – just to pass. High school I did the worst. They were being unnecessarily hard to “prepare” us for... what exactly? I found university easier than that. That was bullshit. But, like I said, I passed.
- Did you have a best friend growing up? What was their name? Are you still in touch?
I had some best friends. There were a whole bunch in the neighborhood and I had two at school. A few of them moved away or transferred to other schools and the ones that didn’t weren’t my friends anymore as the years passed. Our interests were no longer the same. That’s fine. Shit happens.
- Were you in any cliques?
No. I talked to everybody.
- Best childhood memory you can recall?
Playing outside, throwing rocks and chasing each other with sticks. It’s not really a memory, it’s a feeling.
- Worst childhood memory you can recall?
I got trapped in an elevator once. I decided to go off exploring on a school trip. Something malfunctioned on the way up. It felt like hours I was in there but it was probably only 30 minutes at most. That wasn’t fun.
- Name an event in your childhood that has shaped you into the person you are today
I sound like a broken record and I usually don’t bring it up, but being adopted tops the list. I don’t know what my life would be like if I stayed in Iran. Thank God I wasn’t born a girl.
- What is the dumbest thing you have ever done to impress someone? Were they impressed or was it all for naught?
I’ve done a lot of dumb shit but it’s rarely to impress anyone.
- Did you ever have any sweethearts or lovers? Do you have a boy/girlfriend?
I’ve had many lovers and a handful of exclusive relationships. I’m not spoken for now. ;)
- Are you a virgin?
Ha. Not since I was 14.
- Do you ever plan on getting married in your life? Do you want kids?
I think it’ll be a long time before either of those things happens.
- Would you rather have your own kids or adopt? How many kids would you want?
Ideally both. Being adopted myself, I was very lucky to get a home that treated me well. If I had any kids at all, maybe 4 total – biologically or otherwise.
- Do you think you'd be a protective parent or a relaxed parent?
Probably a mix of them.
- How would you prefer to pass away? Surrounded by loved ones and at peace, or while doing something heroic?
If anything, I wanna die quickly.
- Generally, how healthy are you? Do you get sick or injured easily or are you fit?
I’m healthy. I don’t get sick very often. My serotonin could probably use a boost.
- Have you ever been badly injured before?
A few times. The worst was from a fight in high school. Me and some other guy were arguing over some stupid shit in retrospect. We weren’t the least bit sober and when you’ve got two angry teens rolling, shit hits the fan quick. I’m only glad fists and knives were involved and not guns.
- What is the worst injury you have ever gotten? What was it and how did it happen? Were you ever close to death?
That fight. I still have a scar on my side from it.
I’ve skirted fate once or twice. I might not be so lucky the next time.
- How many times have you been to the hospital/doctor's?
Maybe 3 times? I don’t know, I don’t count them.
- Have you ever had a concussion or brain injury? Have you ever had amnesia?
I got a mild concussion from a fist fight. I’ve also blacked out at parties once or twice. I like staying conscious so I don’t go as hard as I used to.
- What was the worst illness you ever contacted? Do you know what it was? How long were you sick?
The clap. It’s long gone now. Moral of the story: Wrap it before you tap it.
- Ever had any extended hospital stays? What for?
No.
- Have you ever had to give yourself or someone else emergency first aid? What happened?
No.
- Are you employed? Where do you work and who do you work for? What do you do?
Manta Talent Acquisitions. I’m a consultant.
- Are you happy with your current job?
It’s fine. I’ve never done anything like it so it’s been a learning experience. The pay is good and I get flexibility. There’s better jobs out there I know but so far, I’ll stick it out with this one.
- Did you have any previous jobs? What were they and what did you do?
Lots. Did some short summer work through the years. For full time I was a restaurant host, bartender, construction worker, office aide, bookkeeper for a short stint, and now a talent consultant.
- Most dangerous thing you have ever done?
Drug mixing + alcohol = you might die.
Shower sex is a close second.
- Do you consider yourself a more active person or a more relaxed person?
Active.
- What is your dream come true? How about your worst nightmare?
I’m not letting you use that against me.
- What is the biggest and most important goal you have set for yourself?
Be a little less temperamental.
- How persistent would you say you are? How much does it take to get you to give up on a task?
It takes forever for me to give up on anything because I don’t like to give up.
- Would you surrender yourself to your enemies or fight to the very end?
That depends on the circumstances.
- When do you usually do your shopping? What is currently on your shopping list?
Groceries I get after work or later at night when the rush is gone. I get my clothing and home things whenever I need them.
- Top three things on your wishlist?
I’ve got what I want right now.
- Currently, what is something you want but do not need?
See above.
- Do you like shopping? What is your favorite thing to shop for?
I don’t care either way. I get what I need and go.
- What is the most expensive thing you have purchased? Was it worth it?
My car. Hell yeah it was worth it.
Tumblr media
- What would you do if you were suddenly given one billion dollars out of the blue?
What wouldn’t I do? That’s the real question.
- What would you describe your style of clothing as?
Ah... A nicer kind of casual.
- Do you have any hobbies? Name all of them if you can.
My hobbies? Just watching movies or listening to music. Socializing. Running. Whatever I find interesting at the time I guess.
- Do you like and appreciate art? What is your favorite piece of artwork?
I’ve never been a big art fan. Leonid Afremov has great stuff, though.
- Do you like music? What is your favorite style of music?
I like rock music, but I’m also a basic bitch and listen to top 40.
- Have you ever seen any musicals? What is your favorite?
No. I don’t like singing in shows. People get really angry when I say I don’t like different animated movies.
- What are your top three favorite animals? What would you say your "Patronus" or "Spirit Animal" is?
Elephants. That’s really it.
Look. How could you not like them?
Tumblr media
- What are your top three favorite colors?
Burgundy/maroon, grey, and... I don’t know. White? Black? Yellow? As long as I look good in it.
- What is your favorite season? Do you prefer hotter or colder weather? Do you like snow at all?
Summer. I’ll take hot weather over cold. Cold’s got its benefits, though. As for snow, it’s great to look at and play in, but I’m paying someone else to clean that up.
- What kind of flavors do you prefer: Sweet, Sour, Bitter, Spicy, Dry, or Umami (savory meat taste)?
Every taste has its place in my heart and stomach.
- Can you cook at all?
Yeah I can cook. But for you? For a price.
- What is your favorite dish? Can you prepare it? Do you have the recipe handy?
Breaded chicken served with oven-roasted allumette-cut potatoes paired with a spiced tomato reduction sauce. I can make it, but I don’t use a recipe so it tastes a little different each time.
- What is your favorite fruit and vegetable?
I love nectarines.
- What is your favorite dessert? What is your favorite type of candy/treat?
Favorite dessert is cookie dough ice cream.
- What is the best thing you have ever had the opportunity to eat? What is the worst?
Pus-- I really love nectarines. The worst was liver.
- Do you like to drink tea or coffee? Any favorite flavors?
I hate coffee, so I’ll always go for tea. I really like hibiscus tea but I’ll go for any kind of tea.
- Describe your sense of humor.
Situational. Bawdy. Dry.
- What is one thing you are justly proud of?
Where I am now financially. My job, where I live, the things I have. It took a long time to get here. Everything else in life is a work in progress.
- Do you have any religious beliefs? If not, have you ever been to a church service?
I don’t care what you do in your free time. I’ve only been to churches for weddings or funerals.
- What would you say is the worst thing someone has done to you? What is the meanest thing someone has ever said to you?
I had an ex-friend who almost blackmailed me into some serious crime. I’m not talking little drug runs, I mean stuff that’ll get you locked up for the rest of your life and then some. I had to get out of that before things got bad. Mean words on the other hand don’t mean anything to me.
As for the absolute worst thing someone’s done to me, I’m not gonna talk about it.
(It’s a very sore subject for him, sorry!)
- What is the worst thing you have done to someone? What is the meanest thing you have said to anyone?
I’d never hurt a fly. Honest.
- Share the latest entry in your diary/journal.
Don’t have one. My old counselor suggested me to have one a long, long time ago but I thought it was stupid. I don’t think that as much now, but I still don’t want one.
- What is the most precious thing you own? Is it valuable at all?
A necklace with a little elephant pendant from my siblings. It has no market value but it’s priceless to me.
- Talk about someone you know. It can be someone you either like or dislike.
[proceeds to talk about himself]

Part 3 Revealed – the One Single Most Important thing You need to start doing right away to achieve success in dating, love and relationship.
What is the one, simple thing you need to start doing right away to boost Your chances in finding a date, love and a lasting relationship?
In this Part 3 in our Blog Series on dating, love and relationships, we're going to reveal to you the one, single most important thing You need to do to achieve success in dating, love and relationships.
In my previous Blog Post, we revealed the biggest obstacle holding us back in dating, love, relationships and finding love match.
Today we are going to look at the one, single most important thing You need to do to achieve success in dating, love and relationships.
This one, free and easy to do thing will not only boost your chances of getting a date but also of finding love and a lasting relationship.
You’ll be amazed at how simple and easy it is to implement this into your daily routine.
So, what is the one simple thing?
What you need to do is, wait for it – simply SMILE!
Yes, simply SMILE, it’s free, ridiculously easy to do and you’ll be amazed at the results.
Quick Note:
You’ll be amazed at how simple and easy it is to implement this into your daily routine.
Let’s take a closer look at 10 reasons smiling is one of the most important tools in your arsenal to attract people towards you.
1. Smiling makes you appear 100% more approachable.
Since the day of the cavemen the simple act of smiling has been used as a sign that we come in peace.
It showed strangers we approached that we’re not coming to their village to plunder, rape and pillage.
No, when we approached strangers with a smile it showed them we were open to communication, non-threatening and coming in peace.
Fast track to the present day.
Who are you more likely to invite over to your table for a sociable chat?
The grumpy, aggressive axe murder lookalike, or the smiling person exuding self-confidence, friendliness and goodwill?
Smile if you want to attract the opposite sex! It just works.
2. Smiling Helps in Making Us Look More Attractive
It’s a known fact people are naturally drawn to those who smile.
A friendly smile makes us all look 100% more approachable than a frown or scowl.
Smiling makes you appear relaxed, calm and welcoming to those that want to approach you.
It immediately puts them at ease.
A smile draws people in towards you.
Aggressive facial expressions like frowns, scowls and grimaces makes people want to avoid you like some nasty disease.
Simply smile and draw people in towards your inner circle.
3. Smiling is a Great Stress Reliever
Approaching some random person for the first time is stressful to most, add to that if you want to ask them for a date and your stress levels skyrockets!
Without us realizing it, those stressful feelings shows itself through our facial expressions and body language.
To fix this simply smile! Subconsciously you’ll immediately feel more relaxed and confident, not stressed at all.
Not only does a smile transform your face, it also prevents us looking tired, worn down, and overwhelmed.
4. Smiling is a Fantastic Mood Enhancer
The simplest way to change from feeling grumpy and depressed to feeling happy, positive and uplifted is to simply smile!
Smiling activates neural messaging in your brain that tricks the body into elevating your mood.
When you smile your brain releases neuropeptides and mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin.
Smiling is one of the best and free natural anti-depressants you can get.
Imagine whom you’ll say yes to when asked to go on a date, the grumpy depressed person or the happy and positive opposite?
5. Your Smile is Contagious
Do you realize smiling not only uplifts your mood, but it can also change the mood of others and make them happier?
Think of the last time you didn’t smile back at a baby who smiled at you, I mean really, who can resist?
Now go out there and smile at at least 5 people per day for the next 2 weeks and measure the results.
You’ll be amazed how many people can’t resist smiling back at you!
Returning someone’s smile is a completely automatic and subconscious response!
It’s even scientifically proven that smiling is contagious!
What better way to attract someone than to break the ice with an honest, from the heart open smile?
6. Smiling can Lower Your Blood Pressure
You can actually try this experiment at home if you have a blood pressure monitor.
First, take your blood pressure, then smile for one whole minute and take a second reading.
Do you notice the marked difference?
How does this help us in the dating game?
Simple, the more relaxed we feel, the more confident we feel about ourselves.
This self-confidence subconsciously radiates from ourselves, making us so much more attractive to those around us.
7. Smiling makes us Feel Good
When we smile, our bodies release endorphins, natural painkillers, and serotonin.
When you combine these three neurotransmitters you have an all-natural feel good drug.
When you feel good about yourself, you are more relaxed and more confident in your own abilities.
When you radiate a confident and relaxed aura you appear so much more attractive and approachable to complete strangers, what not to say about a potential date!
8. Smiling gives us an instant Face-Lift, making us Look Younger
The muscles we use to smile have the added bonus of giving us an instant face-lift!
Smiling has the added advantage of making you appear instantly younger.
Are you worried what your potential date might thing about your age, simply smile!
You’ll get an instant face-lift and all the positives that go with your smile will divert any reservations someone might have had about your age!
9. Smiling makes you look more successful
Studies have revealed people who smile on a regular basis appear more confident.
People that smile a lot are also more likely to get a promotion.
When you smile you are also more likely to be approached by other people.
With this information at hand doesn’t it make sense to smile whenever possible if you want to attract people?
10. Smiling makes us stay positive
It’s almost impossible to think negative thoughts when we smile.
Even when we force a smile our brain continuously try and override any negative feelings and emotions.
When someone says no to your advances for whatever reason, simply put on a big smile, thank them for their time and walk away still smiling.
The positive vibes you send to yourself will immediately override any negative feelings you might have had for being turned down.
Smiling in the face of rejection will leave you feeling positive and ready for your next move!
Where to from here?
Now we know why smiling is the one simple thing you need to start doing right away!
Smiling not only boosts our self-confidence but also skyrockets our chances of getting a date, finding love and getting involved in a relationship!
It’s time to put this in action!
For the next 5 days simply go out, catch the eye of 5 random people every day and give them an awesome, from the heart smile.
Be it the doorman, taxi driver, co-worker or person you fancy, smile at them with a glint in your eye to boot.
Keep a record of their reaction.
More importantly, keep a record of how you feel about yourself before and after this exercise.
I know you’ll be astounded at the outcome.
