Who was “Papasan Choi” (Or Sang Ik Choi, or Bong-choon Choi)?
Tumblr media
△ Pictured:  (left to right) Sun Myung Moon, Young Whi Kim, Bong Choon (Sang Ik – Papasan) Choi and Bo Hi Pak Sang Ik Choi, also known as Papasan Choi and Bong-choon Choi, in Japan he was Nishikawa Masaru, was a prominent figure in the Unification Church. Born in South Korea in the 1920s, he was one of the early followers of Sun Myung Moon, the founder of the church. Prior to joining the Unification Church, he was a Holiness minister. It was also revealed during the Koreagate scandal that he was in fact a KCIA agent.
Throughout the early years of the church, Choi played an integral role in its growth and development, and was highly regarded by other members for his deep faith and devotion. He was known for his dynamic teaching and witness activities and was seen as a key figure in spreading the message of the Unification Church in South Korea, Japan, and the United States.
In the early days of the Unification Church, Choi was took part in the pikareum, though he had publicly denied this and even shown disapproval over these acts. His involvement with the church led to his friendship with prominent Japanese businessman Ryoichi Sasakawa, who was a strong supporter of the church in Japan and provided financial support to its growth and development.
Choi was also involved in various business ventures, some of which were associated with the Unification Church, while others were independent. This likely played a role in connecting him to Sasakawa, as they both had business interests in Japan and worked together on various ventures in the country, including real estate development and the import-export of Korean goods. It is likely that they met through these business dealings and formed a professional relationship based on mutual interests and goals.
In the United States, he was involved in the establishment of several Unification Church-related organizations and companies, including the International Cultural Foundation and the Little Angels Performing Arts School. These organizations aimed to promote the teachings of the Unification Church and to better understand Korean culture and values.
Papasan Choi also played a role in the establishment of the Washington Times, a conservative newspaper that was considered to be a voice for the Unification Church and its political views. He was a strong supporter of Ronald Reagan and was involved in various political campaigns, including the 1988 presidential campaign of George H.W. Bush. Despite his achievements and contributions to the Unification Church, Papasan Choi was not without controversy, with some former members accusing him of being involved in financial irregularities and exploiting members. However, these claims are disputed by current members of the church.
Papasan Choi's relationship with Sun Myung Moon was strong and he was at one point considered to be one of the key figures in the Unification Church, joining Moon on his world tour. He had a strong relationship with the Zainichi Yeon-soo Lim (Onni Durst), a key figure in Moon’s honey-pot activities in Japan who later became a missionary in the Bay Area. Choi had been connected to Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi as well, and Yoshio Kodama, who was known for his involvement in organized crime and had a controversial reputation.
In Japan, Papasan Choi was sent as a missionary and faced many challenges in building the church in the early years. Despite the opposition he faced from other religious groups and Japanese society, which was unfamiliar with the teachings of the Unification Church, he persevered with the help of Sasakawa, eventually establishing a strong presence for the church in Japan.
In the Bay Area, Papasan Choi founded Booneville, a community in Northern California that was designed to be a model of the ideal society according to the teachings of the Unification Church. He laid the foundations of Booneville, though he was re-assigned to a different mission as the activities there began to pick up with constant new recruits. During the Koreagate scandal, Sang Ik Choi was accused of being a South Korean intelligence agent who was involved in a lobbying campaign to influence US government policy toward South Korea. It was alleged that he was a close associate of Tongsun Park. He was implicated in the bribery of US government officials and in illegal campaign contributions to a number of US politicians, both Republicans and Democrats. The allegations against him were part of a broader investigation into corruption and influence-peddling in the US government by the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA). His work as a KCIA agent has never publicly disclosed or admitted by the Unification Church.
Papasan Choi's relationship with the church changed and he eventually came to the conclusion that Sun Myung Moon was not the messiah. He left the church and went on to pursue other religious and spiritual pursuits, although he remained highly regarded by some former members of the church for his deep, practical faith and vision.

How Do Authors Start Their Story?
You finally have your outline or plot ready. You want to begin writing your story but you have no idea how you want it to start.
That's my problem right now, so I put down a few examples of the beginning of books as inspiration!
─────────────────────
Finvarra's Circus by Monica Sanz
Leanna Weston looked down at the age worn ticket in her hands and abandoned all prior belief that there was nothing worse than a broken heart. Her heart, however, was not one ruined by the unrequited affections of a boy, nor failure to secure a husband. It, in fact, had little to do with love at all. No, Leanna learned long ago that no man would ever want the sister with a damaged heart, not when there were two other healthy, lively ones in the stable.
─────────────────────
Voice of The Blood by Jemiah Jefferson
All the best tales begin with rain. In reality, this is the end of the story I am about to relate to you, but I begin here, because I'm sitting waiting in the pitch-dark parlor of my old house, bare feet with their long nightmare toes peeking out from beneath an appropriately literary white eyelet nightgown. The rain is picking up outside from a sleepy waltz to a tarantella, and often when it rains like this, my lover John returns to me for the night. My lover—the unfortunately feral and tragically beautiful—may join me here, for he hates being out in the rain in the mulchy graveyards and unwholesome underpasses where he ordinarily stays.
─────────────────────
The Yada Yada Prayer Group Gets Real by Neta Jackson
The call of nature—Willie Wonka's, not mine—got me out of bed at the bleary hour of seven thirty, even though the New Year's Eve party upstairs had kept me awake till after three. Three a.m.! But Willie Wonka's bladder was on dog-time—old dog time at that—making sleeping in on holidays a moot point. Stuffing my feet into my scuffs and pulling Denny's big terry robe around me, I stumbled out of our bedroom mumbling thinly disguised threats at our chocolate Lab as he led me out the back door.
─────────────────────
Rosehead by Ksenia Anske
Lilith Bloom had a peculiar feeling that the rose garden wanted to eat her. She surveyed it through the open car window, unable to look away. The garden seemed to survey her back. It was enormous. Its red blanket surrounded a solitary mansion at the end of Rose Street, Rosenstrasse in German. No other houses stood in sight, only a distant forest. Apart from tires grating on the gravel, it was eerily quiet, too quiet for a hot summer afternoon.
─────────────────────
Mongrels by Stephen Graham Jones
My grandfather used to tell me he was a werewolf. He’d rope my aunt Libby and uncle Darren in, try to get them to nod about him twenty years ago, halfway up a windmill, slashing at the rain with his claws. Him dropping down to all fours to race the train on the downhill out of Booneville, and beating it. Him running ahead of a countryside full of Arkansas villagers, a live chicken flapping between his jaws, his eyes wet with the thrill of it all. The moon was always full in his stories, and right behind him like a spotlight.
─────────────────────
Appointment In Jerusalem by Derek Prince
The last glow of the setting sun had faded from the sky behind me, leaving the streets of Jerusalem dark and empty. The silence was broken only by the scuff of my shoes against the stones. The damp, wintry air felt raw against my cheek. Instinctively, I clutched closer to me the bundle that I carried.
─────────────────────
Below by Laurel Hightower
It came out of nowhere.
Addy’s hands shook, the band of her grandmother’s wedding ring tapping an erratic rhythm on the edge of the chipped porcelain mug she held so tight. The coffee within had long gone cold, but she couldn’t make herself let go.
It came out of nowhere.
She clutched the cup harder, knuckles whitening as they had around her steering wheel when the dark blue van appeared in the middle of the road, facing the wrong direction. Her fingers were stiff: she’d had to pry them from the wheel once she’d pulled into the truck stop parking lot. Her heart raced, her breathing erratic, stopping every so often until her burning lungs reminded her that no, she hadn’t died, so she still needed air.

so i just got back from seeing twisters and AAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH
no spoilers first - i really really really enjoyed it! the visuals were incredible, i loved all the characters, [except for scott, but that’s a given] and the science was pretty damn accurate! i think i annoyed my brothers and cousin with how unintentionally chatty i was in the theatre, so oops. that’s just how you know i liked it.
NOW TIME FOR THE SPOILERY REVIEW! IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET, DON’T LOOK BENEATH THE CUT!
first things first, THE TORNADO WRANGLERS ARE FROM ARKANSAS!! as an arkansan born and raised, i was over the moon when javi said they were from arkansas! i guess i should’ve connected the dots with boone- since there’s literally a booneville arkansas which is probably where he got the nickname [at least in my headcanon]. this also implies that tyler doesn’t like the longhorns given he went to the university of arkansas which is funny since glen powell is a massive texas fan.
the whole beginning scene was very much like the beginning of the original twister, establishing that kate has the Trauma™ like jo does. i’m still very confused as to how the hell her and her team got their hands on the original Dorothy, but i’ll chalk that up to typical movie logic.
i absolutely adored all of the tornado wranglers and i can confidently say that NONE of them are straight. i mean- have you seen them?? they are a chaotic found family and they care so much for each other and i love it. and i also love how instantly they accepted javi and kate into the Wranglers since it’s implied they start working with them at the end of the movie.
i was lowkey a little worried they were going to make javi turn his back on kate for the money hungry crew he accidentally created - which i think he genuinely didn’t fully know what he was getting himself into with the realtor dude that was funding the whole thing - but GOD was it satisfying seeing javi go ‘FUCK YOU’ to scott and ditch him. [scott simps i am NOT sorry about what happened to him, he was a total asshole and deserved what he got]
tyler!! oh my god tyler, i loved him so much. he completely subverted my initial expectations of him being more of a jonas miller type of character, but he turned out being more like a mix of jo and dusty, funnily enough. he genuinely cares about his team and helping people in need, putting them before the storms.
i know a lot of people are disappointed that they took out the kiss between tyler and kate, but i actually loved the fact they chose to keep it ambiguous and open for the audience to interpret themselves. obviously it’s implied that they will end up together, but it’s also clear that kate’s still dealing with the trauma of her past boyfriend’s death, like anyone undoubtedly would after losing people you love in such a traumatic way. it also implies that tyler, kate and javi might end up poly - since there were MULTIPLE instances of kate sharing not-so-platonic interactions with both tyler and javi - which is always fun to have an excuse to ship a new ot3, tehe. [hell, i was shipping them BEFORE the movie even came out, lmao.]
all in all i really enjoyed it, and now it WILL be in the head for a while and i WILL be seeing it again. i give it a solid 8.5/10.

2 & 3. Variant covers for variant editions.
4 & 5. Symbols of the "Single Tax" proponents.
6 thru 9. Easy explanations about the "Single Tax" movement.
1906: The Earth (is) Not Hollow.
Solon B. Welcome's 1894 novel "From Earth's Center" presents an urban yet, pastoral setting for another Hollow Earth 'adventure.'
Plot: A wealthy Californian discovers a steel passage at the North Pole! One that leads him to a country under the Earth's crust...
Strangely enough, this Centralia is an English speaking nation! One that is a sociopolitical utopia organized under a reformist agenda.
Centralia is a synthesis of urban & rural spaces that function like one harmonious unit.
'Dense' city living are sited in pleasant sites - there's no slums! Non-central locations are all connected via electric cars, boats & monorails.
Homes have electric wiring & every 1 gets their energy 'straight' from coal!!
Poverty's wiped out here, rents are strictly controlled & variant land use led to incredibly healthy conditions.
Politically, Centralia is a laissez fair capitalism controlled thru socialistic jointly owned land & the electrical high tech used by all.
This is a Single Tax nation where all industry & institutions are guided by competition. For example, teachers compete to get students!
All of these ideas actually came from the theories of 1 Henry George, who was the main proponent for a Single Tax in America.
Author: Solon Byron Welcome is a total mystery man. I've not been able to find any photos of the man nor any 'real' bio.
All we have are some basics: Solon was born in Booneville, Missouri on February 24, 1861 & died in Los Angeles, California.
Solon was a U.S. engineer, inventor & author. Though I've yet to find any other material written by him...
It seems that Solon was a promoter of the Single Tax movement popular from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
The Single Tax movement was an economic ideology where a citizen owns the value of whatever they produce.
But, the value of rent on any land (urban, commons & resources) belongs to all of society!
This includes land ownership, natural monopolies, pollution rights, control of common resources & privileges - even intellectual property!!
Or, as Henry George put it, "Taxing economic rent is fair, efficient & equitable. A land value tax will get rid of all other taxes."
Any return surplus would become public revenue! And would pay out a basic income or citizen's dividend.
Georgism is the modern general term for this ideology.

sydney mae diaz, queer, trans man + he/him ― hey look, it’s marty davies! he’s twenty-one years old, he’s lived in shrike heights for eleven years, and he’s currently working at shrike entertainment superstore in shrike mall, along with davies' furniture in town. i heard he’s pretty clingy, but i think he’s so intelligent at the same time. can he make it out alive?
polaroids / conversations / inspirations / starters / scrapbook
Tumblr media
basic information -
full name: marty edmund davies nicknames: m, mart, preferred name: marty gender: trans man pronouns: he/him sexual orientation: queer, also comfortable with the label bisexual but prefers queer date of birth: october 4th 1968 age: twenty-one zodiac: libra, doesn't know much about zodiacs family: adopted into the davies family. father, edmund davies, siblings, romy, marina, emmy, lucy and aera davies. completely detached from surviving biological family. occupation: working at shrike entertainment superstore in shrike mall, as well as davies' furniture hometown: booneville, ms
Tumblr media
background -
marty was born the youngest of four daughters to a working class family in mississippi.
life was turbulent from the start; his parent's relationship was rocky at best, though they stuck together and were a team against their children who they treated awfully.
marty went from a sick, premature baby to a young child who suffered with extreme separation anxiety from his parents who wanted no involvement with him. not a day went by that marty didn't cry. it surpassed simple anxiety quickly, and his upset grew due to needs being neglected and life growing only more overwhelming in the worst way.
his sisters picked on him for being the runt, for being a baby, for being weak and pathetic. they'd gang up on him rather than help him through his anxiety and upset.
once he began school, his days started to get better. he thrived under the care of the teachers, and began making friends who helped cheer him up and find relief from the painful home life.
life exploded shortly after, however. after getting only half a year of relief, his oldest sister went missing. nobody knew what happened, she simply vanished in the middle of the day, when she was meant to be at school.
rumours quickly spread around their small town that she had run away due to their parents' cruel treatment. most people close to her doubted the possibility, but couldn't rule it out completely.
their parents began to search for her relentlessly, to prove to the community that they were good parents and not the cause of the disappearance. they put on an act that was cruel to their other children.
items of his sister's suggesting foul play were found months into the investigation, but no body was ever recovered. the case went cold. years later, marty still wonders what happened.
due to the extended time his father took off work, he ended up being let go. the family began to struggle financially, before falling into poverty completely. the reputation of the family made it hard for either parent to find work in the small town, particularly when they were going through such distress themselves and couldn't properly seek out help.
his second oldest sister was taken in by her best friend's family, and an aunt volunteered to host the second youngest sister while they tried to get back on their feet. marty was left without anywhere to go, and was eventually surrendered to the state.
he spent five years bouncing around in the system until the prospect of an adoption came to light. he'd met a couple from boulder multiple times over the duration of two years, and on his tenth birthday he was told that they wished to adopt.
it was the best moment of his life, he couldn't pack his bags faster. to be made to believe that somebody actually wanted him felt better than anything, but then the joy didn't last.
he made the move to boulder, stayed with the couple for two weeks, and then was promptly 'given back'. marty still has no idea why things didn't work out, though he tries to not think about it.
after a year of living in care in between boulder and denver, edmund davies came into the picture, and finally, he had a home, and a family who cared deeply for him. it took time to settle in, but deep down marty knew from the first moment they met that this was his real family.
marty's life only got better from there, that was, until the killings began...
Tumblr media
additional information -
marty is trans, something he began to really realize shortly after settling into his home with the davies. finally feeling safe, and having a family who went out of their way to help him and care for him, he began slowly transitioning at twelve years old.
though no explanation of his chosen name is needed, he is very proud to carry his adoptive father's name as a middle name. marty is actually the shortened version of his birth name, and the name his adoptive siblings began calling him immediately upon meeting (he loves that they told him straight away that he was more of a marty than anything else).
looking back, marty sees his biological sisters' taunting as naive, believing they never had horrible intent but were only dumb kids who liked the control after being made to live under their parents strict control. sadly, it still affected the young marty to the same extent real malice would have.
he's extremely geeky and nerdy and every other version of those two words that he was called throughout high school. most of all, he loves computers and gaming, particularly loving to immerse himself in what feels like an alternate reality and another world.
he always stays ahead of the game technologically, and he always has his nose in a magazine about tech or gaming or both. he considered getting a third job at the station just to check out all of the gear properly, and is often lurking around radioshack.
his favorite person is his older sibling romy. he was the first person he really warmed to when adopted, and his entire life since he's desired to follow his foot steps in a lot of ways. they share a lot in common, and marty admires romy more than anyone.
his first job was at the furniture store, and he stays there even after finding more interest in the entertainment superstore because he loves spending time with romy and helping him out.
he typically either comes across as shy and reserved, or talkative and confident. he definitely has adhd (though undiagnosed) and so when someone gets him talking about something he cares for deeply or knows a lot about, he can talk to them nonstop and as if they're the best of friends already.
he's never had many friends, but he's growing more confident with age, and finding himself with more closer connections.
Tumblr media
wanted connections -
possible connections are not limited to what is listed below. my discord dms are always open to those who wish to plot, you do not need permission from plot calls etc. to message me. responses may be slow sometimes, but i will always get back to you. i don’t like talking in tumblr ims, and may miss those.
gamers - marty is great at playing video games, but he isn't a snob about it and can be a fun person to play with or talk to.
friends of his siblings - being the youngest of the davies, he's always looked up to his siblings and their friends, so i'm sure there's been a few he's tried to follow around like a puppy.
ex roommate - they decided to move out seemingly suddenly, leaving marty to scramble for a new place. they used to be friends but now marty feels betrayed by them.
friends from high school - the few people he's been super close with for years.
newer friends.
crushes - requited or not, from either side. marty will likely never do anything about it.
first kiss - it hasn't happened for him yet, and he's waiting for it to be special.
people who frequent high scores with him.
people who take him under their wing and help guide him along in life - maybe they have something new to teach him.

MISSISSIPPI
2024 Oct 5 (Sat) – We packed up and left Anniston, AL, at 9:15 AM.  I-22 had to be one of the nicest highways we have ever driven on.  The road as smooth without potholes and the scenery was mostly forest.  The grass was neatly cut on the side as well as center median.
We stopped for lunch along the way.  There was a Huddle House (we haven’t seen one of those in a long time).  We had a good lunch and was back on our way in half an hour.  We arrived at the Whitten State Park Campground in Fulton at 2 PM.  We have a great site in the trees overlooking the lake.  We were here back in 2021.  Back then, there were warnings of tornadoes and we had gone to a nearby college to hunker down from the storm.  Thank goodness there is none of that now!
Once set up, we drove to Booneville.  We stopped at Walden’s Supermarket to buy flowers but they only had potted plants.  Then we drove to WalMart where we got some cut flowers.  We took them to the cemetery and put the flowers on Frank’s and Sam David’s graves (Paul’s father and brother).  Afterward, we stopped at a post office to mail off some birthday and anniversary cards to fellow SMART members.  While we were in Walden’s, we picked up some potato soup and chili for dinner.  That was delicious!

I went to the POOREST place in America (Owsley County, Kentucky - Booneville) In light of JD Vance being chosen for Donald Trump's running mate in the 2024 election, I thought that this was the perfect time to release this video. Vance grew up in the heart of Appalachia in southeastern Kentucky, in a little hollow called Jackson. In this video I don't go to Jackson, but I do travel to Appalachia and in fact travel to what appears to be the poorest county in the United States - a place called Owsley County, Kentucky. Booneville (named after Daniel Boone) is the seat of Owsley County. JD Vance will soon be a household name and he may even end up being the Vice President of the United States. Vance started out with extremely humble and impoverished beginnings. In his book 'Hillbilly Elegy', he wrote about his upbringing and described in great detail life in a poor Appalachian 'holler' as well as the plight of many of the poor and forgotten people that live therewithin. Booneville isn't a hollow, but it is a poor little Appalachian town and will naturally share many of the characteristics that Vance wrote about in his book. I wanted to give you all an inside look into the region share my experience with you. Drugs, poverty, hardship exist in this region - in ever-increasing amounts, but so too do strong family values, love of country, natural beauty, a unique and fascinating culture, the roots of bluegrass music, etc. It's a place that very few ever get to, not for lack of opportunity, but it doesn't exactly rank very highly on most folks' travel bucket list. But I was extremely interested in the area so I took a road trip and went to see it for myself. I'm glad I did. I hope you all enjoy the video! #kentucky #jdvance #appalachia #poverty If you enjoyed this video please don't forget to LIKE, COMMENT and SUBSCRIBE!
