Knuckles didn’t understand how this happened. How he got here, on this space ship. One minute, he was searching a cave he once saw Shadow go into to give him a gift, the next he accidentally pressed a button disguised as a purple crystal and woke up in a room with plenty of machinery and a big tube. There was a window behind the tube that Knuckles could see through, which was how he could tell he was in outer space above the Earth.

Ignoring the worry he felt earlier about his whereabouts, the red echidna suddenly remembered his original mission and looked around until his eyes landed on the small bundle of purple lavender that had fallen next to him. Knuckles picked it up and checked it for any signs of damage. He couldn’t have not a single leaf out of place!

Once he confirmed the plants were okay, he looked at the single door on the other side of the room and walked over to it, feeling a sudden readiness to explore and search. He put his gloved hand on the handle to open it and hopefully find Shadow on the other side.

Suddenly, an alarm went off and red lights began flashing in warning. Knuckles’ hands shot up to cover his ears and he cried out from the sting in his eardrums caused by the sudden loud noises. He unintentionally dropped the lavender in his hands and it fell next to him. An automated voice spoke over the blaring sounds and Knuckles began to feel like he could barely think as he squeezed his eyes shut, as if it would do something to stop.

The alarm was turned off and stopped almost as quickly as it started, giving Knuckles’ ears some relief, but that wasn’t the end of it. The lights were off completely, leaving him in near-total darkness besides the light outside. However, since the spaceship appeared to be stationed behind the Earth, in its shadow, there was no light shining into the room. Only making silhouettes of the windows and objects in front of them. Knuckles raised his hand up to his face, he couldn’t even see it!

He wasn’t exactly scared of the dark, but he was scared of hurting himself when he couldn’t see his own hand in front of his face. He then remembered something and his face lit up. Not literally, of course.”Oh, right!” He said. Knuckles reached into his quills and pulled out a glow stick, snapped it, then smiled when he could see his own glove again.”Ah, that’s better!” He said proudly.

He soon realized that he had dropped the flowers again and bent down.”Oh no!” He exclaimed as he moved the glow stick left and right. Knuckles’ quest to find the gift was successful once more and he stood back up, ready to continue to the next step. The red echidna wondered if the power was out, and if that was the case, maybe he could try again.

Slowly, he reached out and carefully gelt around until he found the doorknob and grabbed it again. Nothing happened. Knuckles opened the door and saw nothing but more darkness.

He looked into the darkness and held out the glow stick up like a torch in one hand and the gift carefully in the other, and marched confidently into the unknown area.

The glow stick barely lit up anything a few feet in front of him, but K would able to avoid something that came into the light.

So far, nothing. Then again, it’s only been a few seconds.

It felt like it’s been an hour since Knuckles started exploring. It was just door after door, hall after hall. Some of the halls were angled slightly to make turns, while others were straight.

The red echidna was starting to really feel uneasy being in the dark by himself. Knuckles wouldn’t have minded it if he was in a place he was familiar with, but he knew nothing of this place. The glow stick’s light had started fading a while back, and now it barely illuminated the gloved hand holding it.

Finally, he stopped to sit down against the wall. Just as Knuckles got comfortable, his stomach growled loudly. He hadn’t brought a snack. He looked in the direction he was headed.“Hello?” He called out, his voice echoing down the hall. After a few seconds, he sighed. Was he really alone? Man, this trip was turning from sweet to sour real quick.

“Why are you here?!” A familiar voice exclaimed from the darkness. Knuckles quickly recognized it as Shadow and turned to the direction he heard his voice from. He saw red shapes and a pair of red eyes staring at him, with electricity sparking between his wrists and ankles, and the golden rings he always wore.

Finally, something familiar.

“Shadow!!!” Knuckles exclaimed. He jumped to his feet and began speed walking towards Shadow with a smile forming on his face.”Thank goodness you’re here too, I thought I’d be wandering fore--“ He stopped speaking and slowed down to a stop when he noticed the dark hedgehog started backing away from him.”Hey, what are you doing?” Knuckles asked in confusion.

“It’s called “not letting any threat near me”, you fool.” Shadow snapped back. Knuckles stopped walking and held both hands up in a sort of surrendering gesture.”I promise, I’m not here to--“ The green glow stick slipped through his fingers and he tried to catch it, but it bounced between his hands before falling on the floor. Knuckles picked it up and held his hands up again, and he swore he heard a quiet, stifled laugh.”I’m not here to fight. I was just looking for you because I wanted to give you something.” He finished. Shadow kept glaring at him, obviously not trusting him. That much, Knuckles could tell in the bitch black darkness.

“No. Leave this place.” Shadow ordered. Knuckles rubbed the back of his neck with his free hand to try to calm himself.”I... don’t really know how I got here? Look, I just wanted to bring you these.” He showed Shadow the lavender flowers still in his hand. He couldn’t see it, but Shadow’s ears perked up in surprise and interest.

Just then, the glow stick flickered out and took away Knuckles’ main source of light.”Aw, man!” He pouted. Knuckles heard footsteps and looked back to see the glowing features on Shadow slowly coming closer. He would be lying if he said it wasn’t intimidating to see him walk forward in pitch darkness.

Wait...

“How can you see where you’re going? It’s so dark.” Knuckles asked. The dimly glowing hedgehog stopped right in front of him and glanced up at him.”I can see just fine. And even if I couldn’t, I can hear a lot.” He replied.

Shadow took the small bundle from his hand and looked at it. Knuckles couldn’t help but feel proud, even though the hedgehog hadn’t even thanked him yet, and that pride for bringing him something was evident in his expression for Shadow to see. He studied the flowers for a few more seconds before speaking.“Um... Thank you, but why did you do this? Is something happening? What’s the deal?” Shadow asked suspiciously.

“What? No, there’s no deal. I remembered how you mentioned that you like lavender when I showed you that field I like to stargaze at. I saw these at a flower shop with Amy and it reminded of that moment, so I thought you might like it. It’s called a”gift” for a reason.” He explained. A thought appeared in his mind, and he didn’t like it.”Have you never had a genuine gift before?! Has no one ever given you a gift without trying to get you to do something for them in return?!” He asked worryingly.

“What? No! It’s just... been a while, I guess.” Shadow replied, the last part coming out a bit quieter than he intended.

The hall was silent for a moment, until Knuckles’ stomach decided to interrupt it. K laughed nervously and rubbed the back of his neck.”Uh, you wouldn’t happen to know how to get me back so I can go have lunch, would you?” He asked. He felt something grab his hand and nearly pulled away, but quickly realized it was S hand.”Yes, but I have a faster alternative.” Shadow replied as he started walking. He pulled Knuckles along as he turned. He stumbled at first, but then was able to walk normally, guided by the red and yellow glow of the hedgehog and his rings.

After a few seconds of just the humming and whirring of machinery, Knuckles spoke up.”So, do you like them? The flowers? They’re you’re favorite, right?” He asked to confirm. Shadow didn’t reply right away, waiting a few minutes and occasionally glancing at the flowers in his hand. The echidna started to wonder if this was the wrong idea.

“...Yes... They’re... rather nice.” Shadow said quietly. Not a single hint of negativity was heard in his voice. In fact, he almost sounded a bit shy.

The rest of the walk was quiet, but the same couldn’t be said for Knuckles’ mind. His crush was holding his hand! And accepted his gift!

He wouldn’t admit it out loud (at least not yet), but ever since he first saw Shafow, he had started to develop a crush on him. His voice was so pleasant to listen to. Even if he was insulting him, he somehow sounded so nice! He was the most beautiful thing Knuckles had ever seen, and one of, if not the best fighter he knows. And when he found out about their shared interest in stargazing when he convinced Shadow to let him show him a nice spot to watch the night sky, he could’ve sworn that nothing would beat that feeling of falling in love even more.

Yes, Knuckles acknowledged that he probably shouldn’t feel this way about someone who had tried to destroy him and his friends, but he couldn’t help but wish that they all could be friends, and he and Shadow could be more.

Hopefully this is a good step in that direction.

Here’s my opinion on some of my favorite Sonic ships. I don’t have a controversial ship here, sorry not sorry.

Surgamy: Look, I really like ships about a nice and loving person with a someone who is the opposite. And Surgamy is just that but the goodest. The moment I saw people ship it, I saw the potential immediately, and it just flourish even further. This might be my only Amy ship that I full time ship all times. Sorry Sonamy, Blazamy, Shadamy, Metamy, etc shippers, I like this one more. Sunshine/grumpy Sapphics go hard.

Shadamy: Alright admittedly this isn’t my FAVORITE Shadow and Amy ship, I don’t even fully ship it. But I get it now. I used to think people who shipped this was the cringiest part of the fandom. BUT I SAW THE LIGHT AND THE POTENTIAL AND I AM ON BORED. I mean, kinda… I still see them more as friends. But yo, anytime I see y’all make ship art or something, i’mma be like “Yo dog I get it. Sunshine and grump, that shit go hard!”

Metamy: METAMY SHIPPERS PLEASE CALM DOWN! I haven’t stopped shipping them, it’s just the fire has died down. I just, started to see them less as a couple potential and just more as friend potential. Like, I just think the idea of Amy, being the ultimate friend maker she is being besties with a clone of her crush that has to kill her like 20 times while he’s going through a existential crisis is cute, funny, and full of potential that doesn’t have to be romantic. And I’ve just started to see them in more of that light.

Knuxrouge: According to the shipping wiki this is one of the more popular ones, and this is one of the only BIG ones I actually ship fully. IDK dog, I just think it’s cute and funny when a character’s reaction to be flirted with is “W…W…Women pretty.” They be cute.

Bigfinite: BLAME THIS ON @bbgatile 1000%. For those who don’t know, they made a bunch of crackship art a few years ago, which they now since deleted, which please don’t hate them for its their art, they can do what they want with it, if you want to find it, just google the ship name on google you’ll find some reblogs. But I saw that shit and I’ve loved this pairing to death since. I love dog/cat pairings! I love calm/extreame pairings! I love villains/that one side character pairings! It’s just a good ship and it’s BULLSHIT that there is only like 4 works of it on AO3. Best believe my next STH fic is gonna be about them.

Whispangle: Do I even need to say anything? Pretty sure this shit practically IS canon! Whatever! Lemur and Wolf sapphics goes hard AF.

Shadknux: This like my only Shadow ship. I think this is real good soup. Although, if I had a preference, I prefer the Boom! Iteration of this ship more. IDK Dumb himbo with enough Twink is extremely cute. I really like these two. I admittedly don’t read a lot of Sonic fics, but I wanna know if there’s some good ones with this pairing.

Jetilver: I understand why one wouldn’t ship them together, but I think the idea of Silver learning how to ride extreme gear, even though he can fucking fly, cute. And listen, these two is just a gay middle school couple to me. Jet is a closeted gay teen who is CONVINCED they are straight, and they just wanna be seen as cool but they come off as cringe. And there’s Silver who is just openly himself and can probably blow you up with his mind yet he finds Jet riding on extreme gear and finds it rad as shit. They cool and cute, and they deserve more attention.

Now that Shadow and Knuckles are dating, it's kind of imperative that the hedgehog learns to get along better with his boyfriend's friends. Here's how I think he could do it:

Tails is easy. He's extremely smart and they both have an appreciation for automechanics - Shadow with his bike and Tails with his plane. They can also trade information; if Shadow doesn't understand something about technology, Tails will help him in exchange for knowledge about medicine or his chaos powers. Brain Buddies!

Contrary to popular belief, I think he and Sonic are friends, to the extent that sworn rivals can be, at least. There's clearly a respect of skill present, and Sonic is no pushover. He's saved the world so many times by being a surprisingly brilliant strategist and fighter. Shadow knows that he can't come out on top in a race, but it doesn't matter. They challenge each other, push each other to raise the bar, to be better. They're friendly in such a way that they inspire one another to surpass their perceived limitations.

Amy would be easy to bond with, too, I think. Shadow could have a great respect for her strength, being able to wield that giant hammer like it's nothing. I don't know that Amy could necessarily like or admire any part of Shadow besides the fact that he looks a little like Sonic, but she's friendly and adaptive, so it's a bond of mutual respect above anything else.

The Chaotix are a team of skilled detectives (plus Charmy), so Shadow would appreciate their investigative prowess. He'd most likely be friendliest with Espio because of their similar dispositions, and he would mention what a great recruit he'd make on stealthier GUN missions.

Is Knuckles friends with the Babylon Rogues??? If he isn't, oops. If he is -

Wave kinda acts like Rogue, and Shadow lives with her, so he's got this in the bag. Give her a passing compliment, hand her some jewelery or pretend like he's got something precious to steal that she can make off with, and call it a day.

Storm kinda acts like Knuckles, but...dumber. Compliment his muscles, get in some sort of arm-wrestling match, call it a day.

Jet is fucking Annoying. I have no doubt Shadow would have zero patience for this smarmy bird. At BEST, they could bond over extreme gear (nice board. thanks, nice skates.) but that's it, bro. This blog is part of the Jet Sucks Gang.

That's all I've got thus far. If you'd like to see how Shadow could possibly befriend anybody else lemme know.

I've only seen the first season of Sonic Boom, and Shadow only appeared in the very last episode of that season, with some vague and limited knowledge in between, so if he's ooc I'm sorry!

This is my part of a trade with @louie-loses-it which was super fun!! I hope we can collab again! Please consider visiting his blog and checking out some of their absolutely fantastic art!

Shadow strolled quietly along the beach, ever-present scowl traded in for something softer, for once. He had no plans, no schemes running, and no carefully crafted manipulation fed to him through Eggman to go and carry out at the moment, so his afternoon was free.

His shoes made indentations in the sand as he walked along. He briefly considered taking them off so he could enjoy it barefoot, but dismissed it out of concern that the idiot doctor could come by and annoy him again. He seemed to hatch a new plan against the village once a week. It was nearly episodic at this point, so the hedgehog begrudgingly remained on guard for the sound of machinery on the horizon. For now, he could relax, his ears catching only the sounds of the ocean lapping against the shore and two pairs of footsteps.

Shadow stopped walking. One pair of footsteps.

Fists clenched, the striped hedgehog whirled around and bared his teeth, coming face to chest with a tall, red echidna.

He squinted, then lifted his gaze upward until it landed on a pair of excited, violet eyes.

"Heya, Shadow!" Knuckles beamed. "I'm glad I found you! I -"

"Where are your friends?" Shadow demanded. "Waiting out of sight to ambush me? You all should know by now that I'm much too fast for you to gang up on so easily."

"Huh? No, I'm all alone!" Knuckles replied. "Or - no, I'm not. You're here, so I'm actually not alone!"

"Quit fooling around!"

"How dare you!? I only fool around when I have my jester hat on! And it's in the wash right now!"

Shadow grit his teeth. There was no way he was sent out here to be any sort of distraction, or to do reconnaissance; this buffoon was all muscle and no brain.

"Then tell me," he bit out, rapidly losing patience, "why you're here. Before I beat it out of you."

Although, admittedly, that would be hard to do. He'd seen the kind of force Knuckles put behind a punch, and if he wasn't careful, being on a receiving end of something like that would put him out of commission for a few days. Shadow could not afford to be downed like that. He needed to play it smart if this turned into a fight.

Shadow liked Knuckles' honesty. If he didn't understand something, he was quick to make that known, and the hedgehog was happy to explain it to him. If he wanted or needed something, he vocalized it, and the hybrid would do his best to get it for him.

If he liked something, or someone, well.

Hearing Knuckles confess his romantic interest in the hybrid right after an intense battle with Eggman wasn't something he was expecting, but Shadow was grateful all the same. Since they've been together, he was making an effort to return that same level of honesty the echidna had been giving him.

"I like it when you wear clothes," Knuckles commented one afternoon, gesturing to the bomber jacket his boyfriend had thrown on before coming to visit him. "You have good taste."

The hedgehog thanked him, taking a seat next to Knuckles on the Master Emerald's shrine. Together they watched the slow-approaching sunset, content in each other's company.

"I like when you do that, too," Knuckles muttered some time later. A black ear turned in his direction before red eyes followed, curious.

"Do what?"

"Relax." Violet eyes met his gaze, the sincerity almost too much to bear. "The stiffness leaves your shoulders, and you look happier. I like seeing you calm."

Shadow was glad the low light made it hard to tell if he was blushing, because he could feel the heat in his face.

He cleared his throat. "You...you make me feel calm, so in a way, you're praising yourself."

"Sure, if you wanna see it that way."

They lapsed into silence again, but it wasn't uncomfortable. Rather, it was anticipatory, though the hedgehog couldn't for the life of him figure out what for.

There was also the belated realization that Knuckles hadn't been watching the sunset almost the entire time they sat together. As the last rays started vanishing behind the horizon, the shorter male turned to face his companion again.

"What is it?" Shadow pried, gently. Knuckles didn't shy away, instead giving words to his desires, displaying vulnerability in a way his partner would never fully know.

"I really want to kiss you."

While I continue writing out my hella long angsty fic, have some headcanons!

Knuckles is so so so tactile. Knowing that Shadow is virtually invincible means he doesn't have to be afraid of hurting him, so it's hugs and hand holding and cuddles galore.

Shadow's thoughts run along the same vein. Knuckles is incredibly strong, so the hedgehog can be a little rougher with him when their make-outs get passionate. And if he accidentally pokes his boyfriend with his quills, well...stop trying to hug him from behind. He's not made to be the little spoon.

Knuckles wants Shadow to be little spoon so badly. Getting pricked a hundred times a night while trying to sleep is a pretty big deterrent, though.

They LOVE to play Punch Buggy!!! It's funny and they never keep track of who actually wins, it's just an excuse to work their way up to a friendly spar!

Knuckles has gotten good at translating Shadow's varying "hmms" and grunts, which the rest of the crew finds both cute and weird. One little noise and the echidna knows whether or not he's upset, amused, needs space, or hungry.

Shadow's love language is acts of service. He prefers to show you that he cares rather than simply putting it to words. On the other hand, he loves to receive words of affirmation.

Knuckles' love language is quality time. He lives alone on Angel Island, and while he's not fond of trespassers, it does feel extremely isolating at times. He loves to receive touch.

Knuckles kissed Shadow first. He watched him punch his way through steel in order to take out a giant robot, and made out with him amongst the rubble while they were both high off adrenaline. Shadow considers it one of the most romantic things they've ever done.

Shadow wants kids!!! Let him be a family man!! Knuckles isn't sure he'd be a good dad, but Shadow would assure him he'd be great.

Knuckles has different customs regarding romance compared to the rest of modern Mobius. Sharing his culture with Shadow is considered an extreme act of devotion, and implies intent to stay with him for the rest of their lives.

"Shadow, if you die before I do, would you permit me to bury you on Angel Island, near the shrine?"

Shadow likes matching chest fur with his boyfriend. This one's a little sillier but I like the idea of him showing up with his fluff cut into a little sideways crescent moon like Knuckles'.

Thinking about an Actor au besties!

Team Dark still play government agents, but off-camera they're all kind, light-hearted people and Omega is ridiculously funny. His delivery is very dry and monotone on account of being a robot, but man his timing is impeccable. He will make an off-hand comment that sends half his costars into tears and delay the shoot by half an hour.

Sonic is this confident hero on camera but he's almost painfully shy off-camera unless he's friends with you. This makes fan meet-ups hard, cause he tends to get overwhelmed and run off.

Tails is still his adopted brother on and off screen. He acts like a little shit but in a fun way, not in a "please control your feral kid" way.

EGGMAN. my god. Eggman is an angel when he's not playing a diabolical villain. He's Shadow's uncle and they're very close. Think of Mr. Tinker - that's what he's like when he's not acting. Super kind, gives EXCELLENT hugs, doesn't know what method acting is, he just turns it On and Off. He doesn't have a mean bone in his rotund little body.

Knuckles is a volunteer firefighter when he isn't on camera! He and Shadow met when the studio caught ablaze due to a faulty pyrotechnics stunt and they fell in love when he carried Shadow out of the building. Their chemistry was so strong the studio asked Knuckles to play a background character in a film. He did so well they kept him on and gave him bigger and bigger roles.

The meds are kicking in so I gotta take a break but please ask me for headcanons or whatever if you like the idea

got a weird question for anyone who’s been on the Sonic ao3 for a while: there was a really sweet fic called Water Lily (boom ShadKnux) I read months ago, but the author seems to have deleted their account (they changed names a few times, but the one I knew them by was Fleagrease). I’m mostly just curious if anyone knows the author or if they might have moved the story somewhere else because I’d love the chance to read it again:)
