I hate reading.

Not really.

I love it.

I just hate it that there seems to be nothing quite like it in day to day life for me.

I can’t really listen to shows without subtitles. They are so fast. I can’t listen to podcasts. I get too easily distracted. People are... people. And sometimes that's too much.

Books go at their own pace. At whatever pace you chose. They can stop for years but they will be there when you pick them up again. And even after you finish them, they stay with you.

I vaguely recall books I read when I was a wee child. I think I could name a few that I read as a teen. I know the books that I read when I barely used to read. I still feel the emotions that "Cannery Row" instilled in me when I read it during the summer three years ago. I remember that I got the copy in a second hand bookstore half way across the world. I remember the books where I wrote things in the margins. The books that I started but never finished. The profound feeling of being seen after the book I just finished. The deep cutting feeling of closeness to my dead grandpa. He got me a book just based on the title. My mom gave it to me a few days ago. He died 20 years ago. I haven’t gotten myself to read it yet.

Books make me feel emotions that few other things evoke. Words are beautiful and so are stories.

I hate books for making me feel alive.
