Woodrow Whyte — May 19, 2021
"I don’t know if I want a lot of musicians I love to know I exist because then the possibility of them thinking I suck comes into play"
To quote a famous drag queen, the cheek, the nerve, the gall, the audacity and the gumption of Waterparks to name their fourth album Greatest Hits. It's a bold statement but if anyone can pull it off, it's the Houston trio and their charismatic frontman Awsten Knight.
Like many releases this year, most of the record was written, recorded and produced during the pandemic, and the enforced downtime leant itself to introspective songwriting sessions.
"When you’re alone for so long, it takes a toll on you and forces you to examine yourself more", Awsten said in promotional materials for the album, before adding “When you hear this album, I hope you walk away feeling like there’s no other band doing anything like it. In my opinion, these are our Greatest Hits. As long as you go into it without expectations of prior things, I think it’s going to be your favourite fucking Waterparks album.”
Fans won't have long to find out if the Greatest Hits lives up to its name, as it drops this Friday. To tide you over until then, we asked Awsten to take a trip down memory lane with our My Life In 20 questions.
20) What did you learn about yourself in 2020?
I learned that I can stop using social media if I want to. I knew we weren’t gonna be doing anything so I took a good 6 months off and when it was time to come back in September, I really didn’t want to. I broke that addiction to checking Twitter all the time. It was cool though because we also grew a lot in that period, so I didn’t have to feel guilty for taking that time.
19) What was your favourite album from 2019?
FANDOM. I make all the songs I wish someone else would because they’d be my favourite band if they did. I’ll also say Igor, Amo, Weezer (Black Album), When We All Fall Asleep..., Anonymous, 7, prob some others but the wiki list is very long and I still have 18 questions to go.
18) What was the most important thing to happen in your life when you were 18?
Graduating high school, I guess? Getting a car was good too! I got my permit late because I was scared to drive and didn’t really care about going places, what a dope guy!
17) Who was your crush at 17?
I’m kinda blanking. Maybe Miley Cyrus?? Do people normally remember this stuff?
16) What can you remember about your 16th birthday?
I truly don’t remember it. I was probably wearing a studded belt if that helps though.
15) What did you hate at 15 which you love now?
I hated the straight edge youth crew dudes that would hang out at local venues and crowd kill when there were only like 40 people, like bitch you’re 28 and I’m 15, stop punching kids you my children my bride looking bitch good lordddd corniest dudes ever, looking like Christian Joe Dirt punching kids for scene clout.
14) What TV show were you obsessed with at 14?
I think 14 I was into Dexter. Amazing show but oh my god that ending. I didn’t have opinions back then about quality, but even at that time I was like
13) 13 is unlucky for some. Do you have anything that you’re superstitious about?
I’m very superstitious. Before shows I need everyone to stay away from me and let me play solitaire. I don’t walk under ladders, you can’t split the pole when you’re walking with people, I sage myself when I come home from anywhere, whole lotta stuff, baby.
12) If you could live the life of any other person for 12 hours, who would you be and why?
Honestly I’m fine being me, but if it was just for like 12 hours uhhhhh Charlie Day so I can do that thing with my voice when he says “OOAH HELLLLAOOOH”
11) Who was your best friend when you were 11?
Everyone I was friends with before music was just a friend via proximity, like we were on the same sports teams or had the same classes. That’s how it is when you’re younger. You don’t choose that shit when you’re younger, you’re just like, 'You’re near me, what’s up do u like Captain Underpants?' That’s kinda the deal until you’re old enough to be picky. I remember being friends with these twin dudes on swim team Benito and Ernesto, shout out those dudes wherever they are!!!
10) Where do you hope you'll be in ten years time?
Somewhere the internet can’t find me. I hope I’m into some stupid shit like boats, no wifi on the water.
9) What was your biggest fear when you were 9?
Ghosts, I think. And yeah, I used to hear voices! Not dope!
8) When you were 8, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I used to want to be an author/illustrator for kids books and an archaeologist! I’ll still do the kids books but, man, archaeologists have to be in the sun so much and I need to keep my skin cute so people buy my album. Greatest Hits May 21.
7) Which of the seven deadly sins are you most guilty of?
I just googled them for a refresher and it’s all anime. I’d either say envy or anger. By the way, who made this? It’s stupid as fuck that “anger” is a sin, like huh??????? Bitch I’ll kill you.
6) You can invite six people to your dream dinner party (dead or alive), who would you invite?
No dead people at my dinner party, gross smell. Here’s the thing, I don’t know if I want a lot of musicians I love to know I exist because then the possibility of them thinking I suck comes into play, and if someone like Donald Glover actively had the thought “god, Awsten sucks”, I’d be devastated. So I don't know if I want anyone in that realm to know who I am, I’m cool with loving them from afar.
I’m gonna say a group of people who have nothing to do with me. Like, 6 people who are working on the next Conjuring movie and I just wanna listen in on them and be like, “holy shit??????” I love y’all so much. Quick shout out Lin Shaye.
5) Name five things you can't live without.
Besides the obvious ones: dogs, personal space, sunglasses that cover most of my head, coffee, and tennis/biking. I need to tire myself out as much as possible or I get moody.
4) Describe yourself in four words.
Capricorn. Flexible. Weirdly tall.
3) Your top three songs of all time.
The Beach Boys - 'Wouldn’t It Be Nice', Rihanna - 'Bitch Better Have My Money', and Macklemore - 'Thrift Shop'.
2) Name two things on your bucket list.
A platinum Waterparks album, get a horror music video produced by Blum House.
1) What or who is your one true love?
Having one true love would be scary! Too much emphasis on one thing, too much to lose; can’t put that much on one person either! That’s a crazy level of pressure and expectation! Also Gwen Stefani.

An urbanism reading/watching list for your solitude
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d68e0f2960ff91bfea04625be504b380/851abc19d4b23694-a6/s540x810/e8a58d9bb642bb4beca4342a554b0252aebde5f5.jpg)
During these long hours of being at home during the pandemic, let's fight our cabin fever by escaping into articles, films, and books about urbanism! We've got a few suggestions below, but please add your own in the comments.
THE CLASSICS:
"Downtown is for People" -- Jane Jacobs' 1958 essay gave the world a peek at what was to come three years later with the publication of her book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities." The idea that downtowns could be people-centered places was fairly revolutionary in a time when car culture and suburban sprawl were taking a strong hold in the nation. https://fortune.com/…/downtown-is-for-people-fortune-class…/
"City Spaces, Human Places" (video) -- William H. Whyte was a contemporary of Jacobs and a fellow 'urbanologist'. His study of how people respond to the good & bad designs of public spaces has been very influential. His 1981 documentary "The social life of small urban spaces" continues to inspire, and you can watch part of it here: https://archive.org/details/CitySpacesHumanPlaces
HOW ATLANTA GOT TO BE WHAT IT IS:
"Sprawled Out in Atlanta" -- What happens when poverty spreads to a place that wasn’t built for poor people? Rebecca Burns covers the growth of poverty in Atlanta's suburbs, where people who can't afford to buy and maintain cars get trapped in places designed exclusively for driving. https://www.politico.com/…/05/sprawled-out-in-atlanta-106500
"Where It All Went Wrong: If only we could undo the MARTA Compromise of 1971" -- Fascinating and sobering account from Doug Monroe of how MARTA came to be, and why it ended up being a neutered version of its original vision for the region. https://www.atlantamagazine.com/…/marta-tsplost-transporta…/
"Atlanta's War on Density" -- The low-density spread of the Atlanta region, wherein homes are disconnected from destinations (and each other) at a scale navigable only by cars, was intentional and carefully designed by people who were irrationally biased against density. Joe Hurley's post about it is the kind of enlightenment Atlanta needs. https://www.atlantastudies.org/…/03/atlantas-war-on-density/
THE BLIGHT OF PARKING:
"Atlanta’s Parking Problem Revisited -- Another one from Joe Hurley, who explains why we have so many parking facilities blighting the landscape of Downtown Atlanta. It includes quotes from ThreadATL's Matthew Garbett, who's been known to have some thoughts on parking. https://www.atlantastudies.org/…/atlantas-parking-problem-…/
"The high cost of free parking" -- Vox created this short video in 2017 to explore the wisdom of Donald Shoup and his writings about parking's effect on cities. It's an accessible watch that you can share with anyone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Akm7ik-H_7U
MORE READING:
Above we've listed things that are available now online. For recommendations on books about urbanism, check out the ThreadATL Goodreads list. https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/219759-threadatl-books

How do you like proof and facts that divide the White Race? If it’s fuck Native Americans, as I am, then it’s fuck the Tawny Asians except North Korea. Some person would think I can’t make a region by allyance, but I can make a region as forest are forest and incompetence is incompetence. I can make things about TV and phones, just to take a page out of Republican’s Book to talk about the lack of “climate control” in China and Asia (coal) as I would add lead poisoning, “made in China.” You don’t like conspiracy theory that would call for war and manufacturing? Who would denounce, China? How did you like the unemployment check? When I do so, the act, I can make a front of “clean energy” just to let the fact be concealed (thug). Some woman thinks this is unreal. I did the necessary to where she and I can watch TV for some hours, and there are people waiting for my “update”, my “report”, as they have work to do before and after the fact. My work is the amount of my struggles, and giving “foot soldiers” means to be an honorable vet who is able to make sacrifice and worship. Who just wants someone spitting facts at you, things that can be googled? What is a translator and ancient text? I would make my money personified by profession, just to know the “freeze” that makes everyone look stupid. What are you doing? some bastards would not see that a lazy bastard who just “sleeps” and say “facts” can come to get you condemned if you are not doing anything with “the facts”, I am not lazy, so now you understand why someone gives facts.. to condemn, least he himself be condemned. FACTS. I’m on to your game, you negro. Someone would work, and now you are just giving “facts”, not able to make money right now. What is my oppression, and you being nobody? I can make you money right now, and if I told you personally how to do it (as I am in) and you do not listen.. i can call you a bitch. What is your prominence? “They can just find a different job.” YOU AIN’T NOTHING (the joke, I hope you get it). Many can’t understand that Hathor is “house of Horus”, and the Greeks would trust in their land, their government, just to exclude (weird) by their gods. “Bizarre and primitive.” The Greeks were in Egypt, not Egyptians in Greece, and now that “WHYTE family”, is leaving NYC so I’m personifying cleopatra needle. War on all fronts! Hathor is House of Horus, and by this I can personify udjat eye. Wedjat eye is of Horus, and when you can understand the virus that evil eye lets off you can come to get men who hold their loins like a pregnant woman does!

“Those blue eyes weirded him out, Ivan’s we’re even more creepy.” Weird is weird, and weird is induce a sense of disbelief or alienation in someone. I have seen people become a sex object, and the objection wasn’t them but their father. The father just exposed a weird person as he had shades. Now, you can come to see hate, “you aren’t having sex on my watch, for then I may have to take care of another baby - perhaps a daughter.” Hey, are you a mongoloid? When you see the fact, you can come to see that weird is unearthly. Unearthly is unreasonably early, inconvenient. So, is being “out of this world” a compliment? You hit it out of the park, is not you are out of this world. You would rather “you rock my world..?”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/20907cb7cb422aa7d7b85f1475f675fd/b9117a3ee0031b9d-8c/s540x810/f33249db125a3e6dec4850d435999b08348f539e.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/5d30e313fb92c1f6cad862ff1fe6db9c/b9117a3ee0031b9d-1b/s500x750/7d7f29f9d7a3ef429ad354b8f4b3886bf1eea899.jpg)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/ce22ac8999f10706d1981ccd39ce49e9/b9117a3ee0031b9d-62/s540x810/5b36099d5070671addba46ef5311d0b267bd8cb3.jpg)
How do you like knowing that you are weird if you are weird? There is a difference between being weird, and doing something weird, as something that is weird (that you do) is your destiny. People would put on Melpomene Mask, Thalia Mask, and I would say, “when you were in elementary school, did your teacher play classical during assignments?” And, that’s the talk or lack thereof.. How does someone get to talking? Do you just want to hear about my earlier youth? Well, I know you are a racialist with the foot of pride, because I know the word pickaninny.. and I’m not fond of it. Who wants to see if I would put my parents on the guillotine on the day of judgement? You could be Donald Trump not able to ever be local, a local somebody, or you could be fair-skinned in NEW YORK CITY wanting to live In suburbs as there is really nothing to do in New York City - as there is a big number of they with skin that looks as if it was put to the flame. There is an open door and from that door you see a room that amounts to personality. I don’t want to just be a “room”, but a great house that blesses the LORD, God.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3770e92900f1e5bc590a22547961fd0b/b9117a3ee0031b9d-d3/s540x810/d588f037e0a417c5987fd78c7bda418171478b3a.jpg)
The Thalia Mask, Melpomene Mask, would open doors and now you see personalities that amount to the voice and Adam’s Apple. In the fact, you can fathom the singing girl as soldiers are soldiers. How weak? Ragtime was an attack, as it was nothing but ole slave music that left plantations just to be put on sheet music (the genre), the attack brought another attack that opened doors of interracial and lust. The lust is not according to the law of Moses, as one of the needs of life are just that (wine), but rather the lust is means to engage sin and have it rule over victims. There are people out there that engage sin, and because they spark the flame that makes a fire they feel they will be “last to stand.” You see a mongoloid who doesn’t have what it takes, and in her lack of action she became a sex object - only for a dad to then want to be “dad.” It isn’t going to take my daughter becoming a “sex object” to make me a father. You would see a boom from muse and fire, and now the muzzle is the middle as work is work. Everyone can’t just talk at you, many men are as beast, and if a man has a position of honor and he has no understanding he is as a beast of a field. “I don’t want people to know this information”, and the information is of wisdom as you are rival to a bitch that winks the eye - showing she hates an individual for no reason.
Don Lemon? You can’t be better than him? What about that Negro on with the Blonde at 2:00 on CNN? Where is the prime time Negro other than Don Lemon? Did you know he is a homosexual? So now, you can see Anderson Cooper and the Kike Race. What’s going on? Oh, LORD, do I not hate they who hate you, with a passionate hate? They despise your law, they consider wisdom as folly as they praise/bless themselves. Lead them into disarray, O God, let them see a slippery slope as my nature personifies a culture approved by you. O, lo, do people realize before I started talking and writing I studied? This is not me watching news and preparing for a one hour podcast once a week…………………….. do you know cable news is mostly 24 hours and it’s the same thing with different people giving facts and opinions according to it? All these Negro’s and their rivals with their fact, acting like God wrote the constitution as you can’t upkeep the document in full, why don’t you get in news? That’s a thought. “YouTube.” What?

Is it time to rethink democracy? | Head to Head by Al Jazeera English In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges the renowned economist and thinker Dambisa Moyo on why she believes liberal democracy is under siege and requires a radical overhaul. The best-selling author first made waves with her book Dead Aid where she argued that foreign aid was preserving poverty in Africa instead of relieving it. Now, the former Goldman Sachs banker and World Bank consultant is taking on an even bigger target: liberal democracy. In recent years, the West has been said to be in crisis. The election of Donald Trump in the United States, the UK's Brexit vote and the rise of far-right parties across Europe have all been cited as evidence of the failures of the current political system. In her new book, Edge of Chaos, Moyo provides her own diagnosis for the recent rise in populism and provides a radical blueprint for change. "The notion that democracy is not a problem is mad. It's crazy". Dambisa Moyo, We challenge her on whether her plans to save it - by giving some voters more power than others - will end up killing democracy instead. We also ask if economic growth is more important than political freedom. Speaking about China and its economic model, Moyo commented how "over 300 million people have been moved out of poverty in 30 years" and suggested that the West should be careful not to "point fingers" when commenting on the country's democratic record, which was on its own particular "path". We are joined by a panel of three experts: Jason Hickel, anthropologist at University of London and author of The Divide: A Brief Guide to Global Inequality and its Solutions. Ann Pettifor, author of The Production of Money and one of only a handful of economists who correctly predicted the financial crisis. Jamie Whyte, director of research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) and a former New Zealand politician and philosophy lecturer. Is it time to rethink democracy? with Dambisa Moyo will be broadcast on August 3 at 20:00 GMT and will be repeated on August 4 at 12:00 GMT, August 5 at 01:00 GMT and August 6 at 06:00 GMT. Head to Head is Al Jazeera's forum for ideas, a gladiatorial contest tackling the big issues such as faith, nationalism, democracy and foreign intervention in front of an opinionated audience at the Oxford Union. Terence Corcoran: Forget firing the CBC’s far-left ideologues. Just unfund it
In a series of tweets Sunday, Maxime Bernier, leader of the newly launched People’s Party, said he had been a victim of an “astonishing lack of professionalism.” It occurred at the hands of two stars of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s celestial team of personalities: Rosemary Barton and Wendy Mesley. Their performances were so abominable, said Bernier, that they should be “fired or sanctioned.”
They should not. Bernier’s aggravation is understandable given the attack he endured Sunday on the season premier of the CBC’s The Weekly with Wendy Mesley. During the episode, Mesley smiled as she lobbed ideologically-loaded grenades at the libertarian/conservative Bernier, the main gist of which could be condensed to: “Are you or are you not a member of the vast right-wing international Ezra Levant-Koch Brothers-Atlas Foundation billionaire conspiracy to impose libertarian-racist-Tea Party values on Canada? Come on, Mad Max. Admit it!”
The whole thing can be viewed on the website for Mesley’s new show. It was also nicely condensed by former National Post editor Ken Whyte, who tweeted out a blow-by-blow summary. The National Post’s Stuart Thomson also offered a terrific analysis of it. In style, Mesley comes across as a blend of Fox News’s Sean Hannity and CNN’s Don Lemon — two masters of rabidly partisan broadcasting. But that’s no reason to fire or sanction her.
Nor is there reason fire or sanction Barton, one of the four hosts of CBC’s The National. A few weeks ago, Barton suggested that Bernier had timed his criticisms of Canadian multiculturalism to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the race riots in Charlottesville, Va. Barton defended her implication by arguing Bernier was not available for an interview to confirm or deny whether her deliberate-timing theory was correct.
As intellectually warped as the Mesley/Barton smears on Bernier were — and warped is the right word — talk of firing and sanctions is misplaced. The problem certainly demands radical reform, but you can’t fire journalists for doing the very job the CBC hired them to do: to front for a state-funded corporate news organization that has become, by design, a purveyor of leftism and social activism.
Reform must come at the top, and the only way that happens is by stopping the flow of government money that provides CBC executives with the power to shape the corporation’s ideological agenda. There is just one solution: Unfund the CBC.
It doesn’t stop at Mesley and Barton after all. On public radio, it’s Carol Off, Michael Enright and Anna Maria Tremonti (and in Toronto, Matt Galloway) who are paid to be the audio advocates of CBC liberalism. Just last week, during an episode of The Current, Tremonti unleashed her own Mesley-esque attack on the editor of Harper’s magazine over his decision to publish a 7,000-word article by a man accused of #MeToo misconduct. After Tremonti was criticized for her one-sided hounding, the CBC’s producers made sure to book her as a guest on another CBC show, Day Six, to give her a national platform to justify her treatment of the Harper’s editor.
But journalists are not the problem. The corporation is the problem: an enterprise that collects $1 billion a year from the federal government to promote a specific set of ideas. From the top down, the CBC has become a government-funded organization that has specific ideological objectives that are on display daily.
Mesley’s executive producer, for instance, is a man named Zev Shalev who has been writing on a blog called narativ.org. On Twitter, he describes his work as “blogging about the ties between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. I soon realized these men were working with co-conspirators using money, influence and data to… take over the world.”
But even he’s not the real problem. After all: Who thought hiring a global-conspiracy theorist as the executive producer overseeing a popular CBC personality was a good idea in the first place? And who up the chain of command — up to former CBC president Hubert Lacroix and current president Catherine Tait — happens to think it’s a good idea for a publicly funded national news organization to focus on promoting left-wing propaganda?
If they all believe in these ideas (and why would they take these jobs if they didn’t?) then the only thing to do is to take away their government funding. Let the CBC’s in-house radicals go off and run their own private media enterprise.
Canada already has plenty of like-minded left-wing media. There’s rabble.ca and The National Observer online. There’s the Toronto Star. There are magazines like Adbusters, think-tanks and more. In fact, the main themes of Mesley’s Bernier rant about a billionaire libertarian takeover of the world had already been ventilated weeks ago — in July, in The Tyee, the Vancouver-based leftist news site, in a piece by veteran union activist David Climenhaga.
When he ran for Conservative leader, Bernier had offered some reasonable suggestions for reining in the CBC’s runaway mandate — keeping it focused on news and culture (not game shows and cooking shows) and ending its unfair advantage in sucking ad dollars away from private media. But it isn’t the ad money that’s at the heart of the problem: it’s the guarantee of government funding. The only sensible thing to do is unfund the CBC.
At a minimum, the objective should be to cut off the taxpayer-funded lifelines that support the major Toronto/Montreal/Ottawa/Vancouver strongholds of CBC leftism. How to do it? That should be one of the big national debates in the next election. But it’s past time to let these managers and executives go off into the private market and find their own funding for their ideological advocacy. They can keep their jobs — so long as taxpayers do not fund them.

LISTEN: Whyte House Family Devotions: A Prayer for the Family, the Church, the Nation and the World #366 (Wednesday, June 27, 2018): "An Answer to Problems," by Billy Graham
[caption id="attachment_40916" align="alignleft" width="156"] Daniel Whyte III[/caption] My family and I have had morning devotions, or family altar as some people call it, every day ever since my wife, Meriqua, and I were married 30 years ago. We have prayed and read the Bible together as well as other devotional books as a family, and it is the only reason why this family has stayed together, and the only reason why God has blessed our family and used our family in ministry all of these years. We read Ephesians 5 and 6 every morning as it relates to the role of each member of the family and how that we need to put on the whole armor of God to fight against the devil who is seeking to destroy our family and all Christian families, churches, and Christians. So, now after 30 years of doing this in our home, we are opening this up to others who don't have a family to pray with, who don't have a spouse, or who are single by choice, and to encourage all families who are still intact to go back to the family altar and have devotions together every morning. In these devotions, you may hear me deal with a temptation I'm facing in my life, you may hear me rebuke my wife about not doing what she should be doing, or you may hear me get on one of my children's cases about something they're doing. Don't be shocked; this is real life. SING "DOXOLOGY" Praise God from Whom all blessings flow Praise Him, all creatures here below Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost Amen Billy Graham said, “Death for a Christian is no accident. With God there are no accidents, no tragedies, and no catastrophes as far as His children are concerned.” ------ RECITE: THE NEW APOSTLES' CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Maker of Heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead; He was seen alive by Mary Magdalene and the other women, the disciples, and over 500 other brethren; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth on the Right Hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. ------ EPHESIANS 6:14 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: "What is truth? God's Word is his revelation of truth. Jesus prayed 'Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.' Paul referred to the Bible and its central message, the gospel, as 'the word of truth'.' Therefore, any deviation from God’s Word is error or falsehood. Clearly, God communicated the truth of His word in written, propositional statements that may be understood. The emerging church movement rejects this and opts for a story-telling approach to the Bible. But in the process they make many false propositional statements about the propositional statements in the Bible! Long before the emerging church latched onto postmodernism, Martyn Lloyd-Jones wrote, "The truth can be defined, it can be stated in propositions. That is what we find in these Epistles. It teaches clearly that you must therefore say that any other teaching is wrong and you must condemn it. The New Testament argues; the New Testament is polemical. The Apostle Paul uses very strong language. He says that some people 'believe a lie,' that there are 'false teachers,' and he warns people to flee from them."" ------- PRAYER ------- DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 144 1 Blessed be the Lord my strength which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight: 2 My goodness, and my fortress; my high tower, and my deliverer; my shield, and he in whom I trust; who subdueth my people under me. 3 Lord, what is man, that thou takest knowledge of him! or the son of man, that thou makest account of him! 4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away. 5 Bow thy heavens, O Lord, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke. 6 Cast forth lightning, and scatter them: shoot out thine arrows, and destroy them. 7 Send thine hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children; 8 Whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood. 9 I will sing a new song unto thee, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto thee. 10 It is he that giveth salvation unto kings: who delivereth David his servant from the hurtful sword. 11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaketh vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood: 12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace: 13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets: 14 That our oxen may be strong to labour; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets. 15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the Lord. Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “Fresh favours call for fresh returns of thanks; we must praise God for the mercies we hope for by his promise, as well as those we have received by his providence. To be saved from the hurtful sword, or from wasting sickness, without deliverance from the dominion of sin and the wrath to come, is but a small advantage. The public prosperity David desired for his people, is stated. It adds much to the comfort and happiness of parents in this world, to see their children likely to do well. To see them as plants, not as weeds, not as thorns; to see them as plants growing, not withered and blasted; to see them likely to bring forth fruit unto God in their day; to see them in their youth growing strong in the Spirit. ” --------- PRAYER FOR THE ESTATES 1. He who daily bears our burdens also gives us our salvation.” The writer Edward Dahlberg observed, “At 19, I was a stranger to myself. At 40, I asked, ‘Who am I?’ At 50, I concluded I would never know.” This unexplored personal wilderness is the home of millions of people. Ninety-two percent of all Canadian university students, according to June Callwood, the Toronto sociologist, don’t really know who they are. The Bible says that man is an immortal soul. When God made man in the first place, He created him and “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” One’s soul is the essence, the core, the eternal and real person. And he will be restless until he opens his life to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell. First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God's law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: "For the wages of sin is death…" Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." Now that is bad news, but here's the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will. Romans 10:9 & 13 says, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen. If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Billy Graham said, “We should begin the day with the Bible, and as it comes to a close let the Word speak its wisdom to our souls. Let it be the Staff of Life upon which our spirit is nourished. Let it be the Sword of the Spirit which cuts away the evil of our lives and fashions us in His image and likeness.”
——
PRAY “THE NEW COMMON PRAYER”
Almighty and most merciful Father; We have sinned, and strayed from Thy ways like lost sheep. We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. We have offended against Thy holy laws. We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no peace and joy in us. But Thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders. Spare Thou us, O God, who confess our sins, our faults, and our failures. Restore those of us who confess our sins and repent; According to Thy promises declared unto us in Christ Jesus our Lord. And grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake; That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and sober life. To the glory of Thy holy Name. In Jesus Christ Name, Amen.
——
EPHESIANS 6:14
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: “What is truth? Truth is stable, firm, and reliable. The Hebrew word for truth was often used of things that had proved to be reliable. Thus it often refers to God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises. As the God of truth, we can put full confidence in His word. In the New Testament, Paul often uses truth to refer to the gospel message itself, which is reliable and must be trusted. For both Paul and Jesus, the truth often refers to correspondence between word and deed. John, who uses the words for truth in more than half of the New Testament occurrences, uses it ‘regularly in the sense of reality in contrast to falsehood or mere appearance.'”

PRAYER

DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 142:1-6
1 Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications: in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness.
2 And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.
3 For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.
4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.
5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.
6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah.
Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “We have no righteousness of our own to plead, therefore we must plead God’s righteousness, and the word of promise which he has freely given us and caused us to hope in. David, before he prays for the removal of his trouble, prays for the pardon of his sin, and depends upon mercy alone for it. He bemoans the weight upon his mind from outward troubles. But he looks back, and remembers God’s former appearance for his afflicted people, and for him in particular. He looks round, and notices the works of God. The more we consider the power of God, the less we shall fear the face or force of man.”

DEVOTIONAL READING: “Complete Victory,” by Billy Graham
1 John 4:4 says, “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”
“Paul once wrote, ‘For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary the one to the other; so that ye can not do the things that ye would.’ This is the battle or the tension that is present in us to a greater or lesser degree. So, you see, the spiritual lag that you feel is explained in the Bible. That does not mean that you accept it as the way it should be. You should make all necessary preparations for this battle which the Bible says ‘is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces.’
“In Ephesians 6 we read that the Bible tells what preparation you should make. In the meantime, always remember that ‘where sin abounds, grace did much more abound.’ You can have complete victory! We are told to submit ourselves unto God, and the devil will flee from us. We are also promised that ‘sin shall not reign over us.’”

SING "DOXOLOGY" Praise God from Whom all blessings flow Praise Him, all creatures here below Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost Amen Billy Graham said, “God speaks to those who are prepared in their hearts to listen. Discern the voice from heaven above the noisy din of earth’s confusion.” ------ RECITE: THE NEW NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, begotten from the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and was made human. He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate; he suffered, bled, died, and was buried. The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures. He was seen alive by Mary Magdalene and the other women, the disciples and over 500 other brethren; He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead. His kingdom will never end. And we believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life. He proceeds from the Father and the Son, and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. He spoke through the prophets. We believe in one holy universal and apostolic church. We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look forward to the resurrection of the dead, and to life in the world to come. Amen. ------ EPHESIANS 6:12-13 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: "Adequate preparation is a major part of victory in spiritual warfare. Proverbs 24:10 states, 'If you are slack in the day of distress, your strength is limited.' Here, Paul tells us to take up God’s full armor so that we will be able to resist when the evil day hits, as surely it will. Then, being prepared, you will be able to stand firm. You do not need to learn any formulas or complicated steps to victory over the devil. The Bible is quite simple: James 4:7 says, 'Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.' First Peter 5:8-9 says, 'Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith.' By the way, we’re commanded to flee from sin, but to resist the devil. As Jesus showed us when He was tempted by Satan, one of the most effective ways to resist is to know and recite Scripture. And so one way to prepare yourself for battle in the evil day is to saturate your mind with God’s Word, reading it over and over and memorizing key verses to equip you for victory." ------- PRAYER ------- DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 141:1-4 1 Lord, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee. 2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. 3 Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. 4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties. Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “Those that know how to value God's gracious presence, will be the more fervent in their prayers. When presented through the sacrifice and intercession of the Saviour, they will be as acceptable to God as the daily sacrifices and burnings of incense were of old. Prayer is a spiritual sacrifice, it is the offering up the soul and its best affections. Good men know the evil of tongue sins. When enemies are provoking, we are in danger of speaking unadvisedly. While we live in an evil world, and have such evil hearts, we have need to pray that we may neither be drawn nor driven to do any thing sinful.” --------- PRAYER FOR THE ESTATES 1. Family 2. The most eloquent prayer is the prayer through hands that heal and bless. The highest form of worship is the worship of unselfish Christian service. The greatest form of praise is the sound of consecrated feet seeking out the lost and helpless. “There must be a practical outworking of our faith here in this present world, or it will never endure the world to come. The Pharisees majored on show but minored on service. We need fewer words and more charitable works; less palaver and more pity; less repetition of creed and more compassion.” - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. Instead of staying at the center of our lives, Christ gradually gets relegated to the shadows. Don’t let this happen to you!” ------ RECITE: THE NEW NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: "Paul emphasizes the spiritual authority and power of these foes. He calls them 'rulers,' 'powers,' 'world forces of darkness,' and 'spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places.' His repetition of the word 'against' in each case underscores the complete incompatibility and the entrenched opposition between these evil powers and God’s people. The spiritual authority of these demonic powers is indicated in an incident in the life of the prophet Daniel, in which an angel told him that he would have arrived sooner, but 'the prince of the kingdom of Persia' had withstood him for three weeks. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, had come to his aid. This story gives us a brief glimpse into the unseen world of angelic conflict. Apparently certain demons have authority over entire nations or kingdoms. They are so powerful that even this impressive angel could not break through until he received help from Michael, the archangel! The story of Job also shows that Satan has the power to instigate murderous terrorist attacks; to send lightning to hit specific targets; to send a tornado force wind on a particular house; and, to strike a man with painful boils all over his body. He could have killed Job if God had so permitted. You don’t want to mess with this powerful enemy or underestimate his strength!" ------- PRAYER ------- DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 139:13-16 13 For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. 14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16 Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “The believer cannot be removed from the supporting, comforting presence of his Almighty Friend. Should the persecutor take his life, his soul will the sooner ascend to heaven. The grave cannot separate his body from the love of his Saviour, who will raise it a glorious body. No outward circumstances can separate him from his Lord. While in the path of duty, he may be happy in any situation, by the exercise of faith, hope, and prayer.” --------- PRAYER FOR THE ESTATES 1. God’s mysteries baffle the unbelieving, but bless the believer. The mystery of righteousness, like some of the other great mysteries of God, we cannot comprehend, but we know it works. We stand amazed at this great mystery which enables God to change the human heart, its attitudes, its desires, and its nature. “God, a holy God, who loves righteousness and hates wickedness, through a process of redemption has refashioned us in the image of Himself. How marvelous! For generations He has been applying His righteousness to the hearts of men. But the believer should say, ‘No.’” ------ PRAY "THE NEW COMMON PRAYER" Almighty and most merciful Father; We have sinned, and strayed from Thy ways like lost sheep. Stephen J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage: "Satan also uses deception when he tempts us to sin. He always portrays sin as attractive and fulfilling. He convinces us that a particular sin will meet needs that God has not met. Are you single and desiring a mate? Have you prayed, but God has not answered? Satan comes along and says, ‘Here is an attractive young man [or woman] for you!’ You ask, ‘Is he [or she] a committed believer in Jesus Christ?’ The devil says, ‘No, but look at how nice he is. He treats you well! You know supposedly Christian men that abuse their wives, so being a Christian is no guarantee of getting a loving mate. Besides, you aren’t committing to marry him. Just go out with him and see how it goes.’ And so the unsuspecting get lured into premarital sex and marriage to a nice unbeliever! “Satan uses the same deceptive tactics to lure married believers into adultery. You’re having problems in your marriage, and along comes the most understanding, sympathetic, and attractive person! Whereas your husband never listens to you, this man always listens. Whereas your wife never responds to you sexually, this gorgeous woman is ready and willing! Be forewarned! The devil is powerful because he is a deceptive schemer." ------- PRAYER ------- DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 139:7-12 7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “We cannot see God, but he can see us. The psalmist did not desire to go from the Lord. Whither can I go? In the most distant corners of the world, in heaven, or in hell, I cannot go out of thy reach. No veil can hide us from God; not the thickest darkness. No disguise can save any person or action from being seen in the true light by him. Secret haunts of sin are as open before God as the most open villanies. SING "DOXOLOGY" Praise God from Whom all blessings flow Praise Him, all creatures here below Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost Amen Billy Graham said, "The apostle Paul urges Christians everywhere in all ages to be nonconformists as far as the world system is concerned. We are not to conform. A true Christian, living an obedient life, is a constant rebuke to those who accept the moral standards of this world." ------ PRAY THE LORD'S PRAYER Our Father which art in Heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done in earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. ------ EPHESIANS 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. So far, we have discussed how fathers may provoke their children to anger by capriciousness, unreasonableness, favoritism, selfishness, criticism without praise, demanding perfection, extremes of over- and under- discipline, insensitivity, and not being available. Steven J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage, “Fathers may provoke their children to anger by breaking promises. Sometimes, of course, it is unavoidable. You have promised to do something with your kids, but your job demands your time at the last minute. But that should not happen very often and when it does happen, you had better make it up to your children, or they will grow resentful and they will not trust your word.” ------- PRAYER ------- DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 125:1-3 1 They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. 2 As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. 3 For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity. Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “All those minds shall be truly stayed, that are stayed on God. They shall be as Mount Zion, firm as it is; a mountain supported by providence, much more as a holy mountain supported by promise. They cannot be removed from confidence in God. They abide forever in that grace which is the earnest of their everlasting continuance in glory. Committing themselves to God, they shall be safe from their enemies.” --------- PRAYER FOR THE ESTATES 1. Clergy (church) 2. Government 3. People (citizens) 4. The press (media) 5. He was a wild, intemperate, immoral youth. In spite of his mother’s pleadings and prayers, he grew worse instead of better. But one day he had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ that transformed his life. His restlessness and the practice of sin disappeared. He became one of the great saints of all time. John Newton was a slave trader on the west coast of Africa. One day in a storm at sea he met Jesus Christ. He went back to England and became an Anglican clergyman. He wrote scores of hymns, one of which has become the modern popular song, “Amazing Grace.” This is what Christ can do for anyone who puts his trust in Him. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell. Amen. ------ EPHESIANS 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Steven J. Cole writes in his commentary on this passage, “Fathers may provoke their children to anger by unreasonableness. We've all had the frustrating experience of trying to explain something to someone who is unreasonable and unwilling to listen. You don't come away feeling understood or cared for. You come away angry and upset. Paul is saying, 'Don't use your parental authority in an unreasonable way that frustrates your children.' If they are trying to tell you something, really listen -- especially if they are doing it in a respectful manner. If you ask them to explain something, give them tiime to explain before passing judgment. Granted, there are times when every parent must end the discussion by saying, 'You need to obey me because I said so!' But if that is your normal response, you're probably provoking your child to anger. He or she needs to feel that you understand their situation before you pass judgment.” ------- PRAYER ------- DEVOTIONAL PASSAGE: Psalm 120:5-7 5 Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar! 6 My soul hath long dwelt with him that hateth peace. 7 I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war. Regarding this passage, Matthew Henry writes: “It is very grievous to a good man to be cast into and kept in the company of the wicked from whom he hopes to be for ever separated. See here the character of a good man: he is for living peaceably with all men. And let us follow David as he prefigured Christ; in our distress let us cry unto the Lord, and he will hear us. Let us follow after peace and holiness, striving to overcome evil with good.” --------- PRAYER FOR THE ESTATES 1. Clergy (church) 2. Government 3. People (citizens) 4. The press (media) 5. Comparison is impossible between Him and any other human being who ever lived, because He was the Son of God.” Emerson was right when he replied to those who asked him why he did not include Jesus among his Representative Men, “Jesus was not just a man.” Arnold Toynbee was right when he said, “As we stand and gaze with our eyes fixed upon the farther shore, a simple figure rises from the flood and straightway fills the whole horizon of history. There is the Savior.” Why did Jesus Christ leave Heaven’s glory and come down to live among us? Why was He even willing to be unjustly condemned to death? The reason is simple, and yet also profound: to demonstrate God’s love for us. If God didn’t love us, Christ never would have come into the world or died the death of a common criminal. But God does love us—and the proof is Jesus Christ. Don’t be lost in doubt any longer. Instead, by a simple act of faith invite Jesus Christ to come into your life today—and He will. Your life will never be the same. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Now, if you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell. THE COMPLAINT that “we don’t build things anymore” is one of the oldest ideas in Trumpism. It’s also one of the few ideas to generate a policy with genuine bipartisan support in the president’s painful first year in office. Health care and the politics of engagement with Nazis may have left Washington more divided than ever, but who’s going to say no to infrastructure spending? The bridges are crumbling, and everyone loves a bridge. Tax reform may unite the Republicans, but when Donald Trump seems to want America to rediscover its vocation as a nation of builders, even his bitterest enemies are in on the racket. It’s not hard to understand the appeal of this macho revivalist fantasy. It fits the times. STEM is the hottest acronym in education, and the heroes of modern American business are all engineers of one variety or another. Meanwhile a new hegemonic rival has emerged across the Pacific, crudely caricatured as a nation of number-crunchers and builder-doers. The United States must keep pace, which means: more engineers, better engineers, more and better statisticians and scientists. Amid the West’s near-decade of failed experimentation with monetary policy, China’s rise has fed the idea that the road to durable growth will be dressed with new Parthenons. If they can do it, why can’t we?
Engineers enjoy a prestige in China that connects them to political power far more directly than in the US steel mills and highways have provided China’s ticket to prosperity over the last three decades, and the professionals who design and build them have controlled the levers of political power as well. Xi Jinping is an engineer, as were Hu Jintao and Jiang Zemin before him. America, by contrast, has historically been governed by lawyers. That remains true today: there are 218 lawyers in Congress and 208 former businesspeople, according to the Congressional Research Service, but only eight engineers. (Science is even more severely underrepresented, with just three members in the House.) It’s unlikely that that balance will tilt meaningfully in favor of STEM-ers in the near term. But in another sense, the growing cultural capital of the engineers will inevitably translate to political power, whatever its form.
The engineering profession today is broad, much broader than it was in 1921 when Thorstein Veblen published The Engineers and the Price System, his classic screed on industrial sabotage and government by technocrats. Engineering has outgrown the four traditional branches (chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical) to include all the professions in which the laws of mathematics and science are applied to real-world problems. If math and science are the pure academic research branches of STEM, tech and engineering are its practical heart. The hackers and dreamers of Silicon Valley are all — if not by formal training, then by intellectual disposition — engineers. Interaction with the political world has grown in line with the profession’s expanding intellectual boundaries. As politicians of all stripes clamber to board the Silicon Valley rocket ship, the projects of the engineering profession, especially in consumer tech, are themselves now participants in the political process. Today’s engineers don’t just furnish the infrastructure of everyday life; they also build our most dynamic arenas of public debate (Google, Facebook, Twitter). In a way that was never the case for previous generations, engineering today is politics, and politics engineering. Power is coming for the engineers, but are the engineers ready for power?
It’s useful to reflect on Veblen’s work as the engineers enjoy this latest moment under the political sun. No American social critic has thought more carefully about the relationship between engineering and political power. Veblen used The Engineers and the Price System to outline a critique of financial capitalism that doubled as a call to arms for engineers to take control of the reins of government. In very basic form, his argument was that as capitalism had grown more complex, a class of financial managers had begun to exert control over businesses to the detriment of the engineers responsible for production. The job of these managers, in Veblen’s portrait, was to manipulate supply in order to juice profits. But engineering know-how was the indispensable alloy of production. This IP gave the engineers power. And engineers, Veblen argued, growing “uneasily ‘class-conscious’” as the “all-pervading mismanagement of industry” became plain, were “beginning to draw together and ask themselves, ‘What about it?’”. What about it indeed: Veblen predicted that engineers, formerly awestruck lieutenants of finance, would seize control of the country’s industrial system, ushering in a new era of planned economic management whose guiding principle would be the common good rather than private profit.
Alongside Wyndham Lewis’s 1931 portrayal of Hitler as a “celibate inhabitant of a modest Alpine chalet” more interested in vegetarianism than war, Veblen’s portrait of this approaching “soviet of technicians” — a political grouping as much as an economic one — ranks as one of the more comically inaccurate predictions of the interwar period. We all know what happened instead. Engineers did indeed throw off their habitual reserve and deference, but not in a spirit of class consciousness; they became dutiful capitalists themselves. The collapse of Veblen’s divide between the “financial managers” and the “industrial experts” led not to socialism but the birth of a new class of business-savvy engineer — what today we might call the “entrepreneur.”
But Veblen’s book was influential in other ways. It helped shape a certain idea of the engineer that took root throughout the 1920s: the engineer as a dispassionate problem solver, above the fray of ordinary commerce and politics, the engineer as capitalism’s savior. This carried over into the political domain and explains, at least in part, the rapture that greeted the election of Herbert Hoover, a mining engineer turned millionaire businessman and wartime humanitarian hero, as president in 1928. “The whole country was a vast, expectant gallery, its eyes focused on Washington,” wrote The New York Times a year later. “We had summoned a great engineer to solve our problems for us. […] The modern technical mind was for the first time at the head of a government. […] Almost with the air of giving genius its chance, we waited for the performance to begin.”
The performance, of course, would turn out to be a dud. Hoover’s great failing was his inflexibility. In Silicon Valley parlance, he failed to pivot: faced with a rapidly deteriorating economy, he stuck hard to his guiding political mantra of self-reliance and private-sector giving. By the time he overcame his aversion to federal intervention in the economy, it was all too late: output was shot, and so were his chances of reelection in 1932. Historians still argue over Hoover’s management of the economy through the early years of the Depression — a new biography by Kenneth Whyte argues for the reappraisal of his record as a policy maker — but they all agree on one thing: in the realm of human relations, Hoover was a dead squid. Here was a man who spoke only in “chill monosyllables,” as a contemporary observer put it, a man so rigid in his ways he went fly-fishing in a double-breasted blue serge suit. An engineer, Hoover once said at a campaign rally, could manufacture a waterfall much more beautiful than nature ever had. His listeners were appalled. Hoover himself did nothing to dispel the notion that he was more machine than man; on the contrary, he made it the cornerstone of his brand. “It has been no part of mine to build castles of the future,” he remarked in 1928, “but rather to measure the experiments, the actions and the progress of men through the cold and uninspiring microscope of fact, statistics, and performance.”
Chastened perhaps by their one humiliation in the White House, the engineers have not sought the highest office since. Hoover’s defeat marked the end of the first great flirtation between politics and engineering. For all the friendliness of these STEM-heady times, however, it’s unclear whether the engineers are now ready to stake another claim on political power. Peter Thiel, clammy and vampiric, had his hand held by President Trump, but as a profession the engineers have mostly sat the new president’s first 10 months in office out. (Thiel, it’s worth clarifying, is not an engineer, though he claims to speak for the engineering elite of Silicon Valley.) Of the current crop of celebrity-engineers, it’s Mark Zuckerberg whose engagement with the political world appears most meaningful. Partly this is by accident, since Facebook inadvertently became a central actor in the 2016 presidential election, but it’s also by design. Since the beginning of the year Zuckerberg has been on a tightly choreographed listening tour across the United States. He has rejected suggestions he’s using the tour as a platform to run for office in 2020 as emphatically as he’s refused to develop opinions on any of the public policy issues he’s confronted along the way. This is one education of a political naïf which contains, to date, no discernible narrative arc.
Zuckerberg has documented his travels, along with his thoughts on the news of each day, on his own Facebook page. Even on issues on which he’s taken a strong stance, such as immigration and refugee policy, Zuckerberg strains for an increasingly elusive political center ground. The day after the deadliest shooting in US history, he wrote: “It’s hard to imagine the loss from the shooting in Las Vegas. It’s hard to imagine why we don’t make it much harder for anyone to do this.” On climate change and energy policy, he hedged even harder: “I believe stopping climate change is one of the most important challenges of our generation. Given that, I think it’s even more important to learn about our energy industry, even if it’s controversial. Regardless of your views on energy, I think you’ll find the community around this fascinating.” If Sal Paradise and Dean Moriarty were “tremendously excited with life” and after “girls, visions, everything” on their famous road trip, Zuckerberg is tremendously excited to not piss anyone off on his. Aw shucks, he seems to say on each stop throughout the country; let’s hear both sides of the argument out. Epistemologically, this is not far removed from Trump’s own “on many sides” apology for the Nazis demonstrating in Charlottesville. Did we ever think it would be otherwise? Zuckerberg’s political road trip has been every bit as disingenuously neutral as we should have expected from the man who thinks Facebook, the playpen of white supremacists, Russian disinformationists, and Pizzagate truthers, is “bringing the world closer together.”
There’s a simple way to explain these contradictions away: Zuckerberg is a businessman, not a politician, and his first priority is to his shareholders. This ignores, of course, the political nature of the company he runs. Zuckerberg can pretend he is above politics, a technocrat weighing both sides and implementing solutions through the cold and uninspiring microscope of facts, but politics will find a way to catch up with him eventually. The recent appearance by his company’s top lawyer before Congress to explain how Russian-sponsored election ads reached 126 million Facebook users during the 2016 campaign offered a stark illustration of social media’s politicization. But what was most telling about that appearance was that it was Facebook’s lawyer, rather than the CEO, who was dispatched to DC to face the music. When the major TV networks were called to the carpet in the aftermath of the 2000 election, they sent their CEOs. However seriously Facebook might say it’s taking the role it played in influencing the election — and it’s arguable the company is not even saying that (this Twitter feed is from Facebook’s head of VR, who seems to have been sent out to defend the company before the Congressional testimony. He did not seem contrite at all about the Russian interference) — Zuckerberg plainly considers himself above the fray, the impartial administrator of a cool tech gadget or, worse, a morally heroic guardian of free speech.
It’s possible, of course, that he simply doesn’t care. Zuckerberg’s willed blindness to Facebook’s role as a political actor is of a piece with his tin ear for human relations. In a Facebook Live post last month, Zuckerberg demonstrated a new app his company has been developing by taking viewers on a virtual reality tour of hurricane-struck Puerto Rico. Against a backdrop of flooded streets and ruined homes, Zuckerberg grinned and high-fived with Facebook’s head of social VR. “We’re on a bridge here, it’s flooded,” he told his 97 million followers at one point. “One of the things that’s really magical about virtual reality is you can get the feeling that you’re really in a place.” Responding to criticisms of the stunt, Zuckerberg began his apology: “One of the most powerful features of VR is empathy.” Empathy, in other words, comes from putting a box over your head that makes it impossible to see other humans. Okay, Mark. Whatever you say.
The caricature of the awkward genius engineer, skilled in solving well-defined problems but utterly lost amid human complexity and ambiguity and emotion, has proved remarkably resilient over the decades. Veblen painted the engineers as a “fantastic brotherhood of overspecialized cranks.” Hoover wore his inability to empathize almost as a badge of honor, casting it in quasi-mystical terms as a natural property of his profession. Subsequent generations of engineers have enthusiastically signed on to the stereotype that they’re cold automatons with no regard for human feeling; as one of the engineers interviewed for a 1991 NASA report on the Apollo program said, “I related to things.”
The cliché fits Zuckerberg as snugly as one of his custom-made $400 Brunello Cucinelli T-shirts. Years of experience have done nothing for his ability as an orator. In product launches and Facebook Live riffs straight to camera, delivered in that familiar vocoder counter-tenor, there’s an unchanging style to the Zuckerbergian sentence: it begins with a programmatic smile, races through four or five words of world-embracing banality, gets stuck, short of breath, grinds and lurches forward again, all syncopation and no beat. It’s like watching a machine learn to be happy. That might be enough to get the crowds going in Silicon Valley, but it’s hard to see Zuckerberg prospering amid the retail hug-and-handle of national political competition. Bloodless technocrats might fare well in municipal politics (see Bloomberg, Michael) but the national stage needs its political performers to show emotional intelligence, or at least — here comes the necessary Trump-mandated qualification — a flair for the theatrical. Zuckerberg has neither.
It’s instructive to look at Zuckerberg’s foray into the public sphere, however “apolitical” he may portray it, within the context of Veblen, Hoover, and the first failed marriage between the engineers and power. You don’t have to look hard to find, in Zuckerberg’s missteps, traces of the very things Veblen mischaracterized about engineers — their greed and lack of fealty to the public good. Zuckerberg also gets wrong what the engineer-president got wrong in power — an overweening belief in the power of numbers to move minds, in the disavowal of feelings. Shared by all three figures is a basic failure to understand the political process: the body politic is not a machine, and the complexity of power in human society is different from the complexity of computers. It’s perhaps unfair to make an example of Zuckerberg (“not all engineers,” et cetera) but if his experience is any indication, the engineers are as far from taking political power today as they ever have been in the decades since Hoover shuffled out of the White House, a crying wreck.
In another sense, though, they have made power come to them. The language of engineering, and software engineering in particular, has become the default language of entrepreneurship. Whereas in the past the vocabularies of law or finance or management consulting were the guiding idiomatic template for capitalism, to “do” business today you have to think, at least at some level, like an engineer: setting a problem, defining its rules and properties, applying logic, prototyping and testing solutions, iterating, testing again, and continuing on the virtuous engineering feedback loop until perfection is at hand. The principles of technocratic efficiency and rule-by-expert that both Veblen and Hoover supported, albeit in different ways and to different ends, are now the mood music of modern capitalism. Fact, statistics, and performance have won the day. We’re all data-driven now; intellectual authority comes from mastery of the numbers.
Zuckerberg is both the beneficiary and the expression of this historical movement. The Facebook founder’s lack of empathy is not, as the engineering cliché would have it, a function of super-intelligence: an inability to see things within context and from the perspective of others is in many senses the essence of stupidity. But the engineers, collectively, have come to dominate the conversation about what it means to be “smart.” Intelligence today inheres in their type of intelligence: data-focused, quantitative, rationalistic, and feeling-free. If you’re not STEM, you’re dirt — or useful only as a vassal for the refinement of engineering projects, which is much the same thing. On the historical evidence, this engineer’s form of intelligence is wholly unsuited to solving the most complex problems of government; tech smarts do not port easily to politics. However violently Silicon Valley pushes the story that it’s here to fix things for all of us, building an algorithm and coming up with intelligent ways to improve society are not the same thing. The triumph of the engineers is that they’ve managed to convince so many people otherwise.
This victory is more than simply economic or mechanical; engineering has also come to permeate the language of politics itself. Zuckerberg’s doe-eyed both-sidesism is the latest expression of the idea, nourished through the Clinton years and the height of the evidence-based policy movement, that facts offer the surest solution to knotty political problems. This is, we already know, a temple built on sand, ignoring as it does the intractably political nature of politics; hence the failure of “figures” and “facts” and “evidence” to do anything to shift positions on gun reform or voter fraud. But it’s a temple with enduring bipartisan appeal, and the engineers have come along at just the right moment to give it a fresh lick of paint. If thinking like an engineer is the new way to do business, engineerialism, in politics, is the new centrism — rule by experts remarketed for the innovation age. It might be generations before a Veblenian technocrat calls the White House home, but no presidency can match the power engineers already have — a power to define progress, a power without check.
