Some of you are gonna hate this, disagree with this, get mad at this. Whatever.
Let me say from the jump: CM Punk, 100% should not have assaulted his coworker. Should not have. That’s a fact.
HOWEVER, and this is in no way excusing the actions but this is not ALL his fault like everyone is saying. This entire scenario was building because TK cannot be a boss, that’s not to say TK is a bad person - by all accounts TK is known to be a good person just not a good boss. In TK’s defense (& being in the wrestling business as a booker & promoter myself) it’s hard to be a boss to your friends, because that’s what happened his employees became his friends and that’s a hard position to be put into; however, that does not mean he needs to neglect his duty as a boss and he clearly has. (& in my opinion, is being taken advantage of by people who are using him for his money but that’s a different conversation)
Watching that footage, it’s clear to see that CM Punk was telling the truth. Point blank, what he said happened that night, happened. So that leads me to believe that everything else leading up to that moment also happened. We can’t (conveniently) hear what’s being said but I would guess Jack said something that angered Punk - neither were really showing aggressive behavior, maybe when Jack went to turn away from Punk in the beginning & Punk pulled him back - but like? Jack was turning away mid conversation if I, as a veteran, was trying to talk to a new kids about something & they turned away from me? Yea, I’d pull them back… cause the entitlement is not happening absolutely now.
Seems to me like Jack Perry was being uncooperative from the get-go. Why? Who knows. That’s the real speculation, Punk will say it’s cause of his “friends” (the Young Bucks) influence which is a fair speculation but it could be anything. Jack Perry is young & dumb & is probably forming some kind of ego of “I know better than the old timers” every wrestler gets that mentality for a little while and they need to grow up & out of that mentality.
Punk comes from the era of wrestling where if you talk shit, you get hit - fuck around & find out, if you will and I as well come from that era & mentality, being a professional is first on my list so I’ve never gotten into a physical fight but it doesn’t shock me or fill me with rage when it does happen - not saying it should but some people need to have those consequences come to light. Jack fucked around and Jack found out.
Now, whatever Punk said to TK, no clue… I don’t think just watching that that TK can say that he feared for his life there was nothing to fear there. Now, we can’t hear anything & I’m sure yelling was happening… but fearing for his life? Be so for real right now Tony, honey, you run a wrestling locker room… arguing is bound to happen… relax.
Genuinely, this showed most of us nothing & I don’t think it did anything to benefit AEW. AEW is just trying to fight fire with fire, for no reason. If TK wants to run a “business” then… do that. Want to know what WWE 100% would never do? Show footage of a former employee in a fight backstage. When all that nonsense when Punk left happened… did WWE show footage of Punk leaving to “prove a point”? No. Ditto for Steve Austin - who ALSO famously took his ball & went home and WWE has camera crew literally everywhere… there have been TONS of fights most likely caught on camera but we’ll never see them why? Cause they are a business.
I think this was a bad idea all around… but that’s just me.
(But also can we please talk about Samoa Joe just pacing back & forth, minding his business, getting pumped for his match…. I don’t know why but that just made me love him more.)

Okay but consider: Andy getting a sea shanty stuck in her head so she starts grumbling the words under her breath and then Joe then Nicky then Booker join in and you just have these immortal warriors absolutely belting Wellerman in perfect harmony and Nile just sits there like ?????????
#tog#im absolutely convinced andy and quynh were The Best pirates#and honestly joe and nicky too#apparently i need a pirate fic now#booker came up in the rise of the pirate age right? *goes to check notes*#no ok it was about a hundred years too early for him give or take#so he probably just learned them bc andy and joe were absolutely insatiable when it came to sea shanties for at least a century later#like whenever theyre walking/riding a long distance or have to do manual labor or are just bored#and Booker thinks for a second that nicky might be normal but then they have to take a ship somewhere and Oh Boy#Nicky climbs to the bow of this perfectly normal trading vessel in say 1850#and just looks out into the water solemnly and booker walks up and is like ça va nicky whats wrong#and nickys like 'have i ever told you of my time at sea?' and bookers like non so nicky goes#'hm si i was on a ship called the Billy of Tea. once on a journey we were hit with terrible winds the bow dipped down and the gales did blow#and bookers like 'weird phrasing but ur italian so ill let it slide'#nicky: and our captain; a famous whaler; said to us out of nowhere 'blow them bully boys blow'#booker: what. what does that even mea-#joe and andy and every fucking sailor on that goddamn ship (bc sailors know the shanties i know that for a fact): SOON MAY THE WELLERMAN#COME TO BRING US SUGAR AND TEA AND RUM#and then nicky starts leading the verses in his dolce voice and booker just looks over into the roiling sea like#'yea i could probably survive that jump.'#then andy shoots him and drags him to the quarters so he Doesnt Do That#but yea#i need a pirate fic STAT#if you have a rec PLEASE send it along ill love you forever

today i'm having a lot of thoughts on nicky + music, specifically nicky + music + memory
i've talked about (or at least written about) joe + art + processing emotion/memory to a lesser extent (because i think he draws things he doesn't want to forget so he has a visual record but that's not what we're talking about today)
and the idea of him setting things he doesn't want to forget to music whether it's a story or a phrase or just remembering/making up little melodies that carry particular memories/emotions makes me emotional
also the potential for joe/nicky (early years or later you decide) here because we've established joe is the wordsmith between them so let's say one day joe hears nicky singing quietly to himself and asks what it is because he's curious and it sounds familiar for some reason and nicky starts singing it again and joe realises the words sound familiar because they're his, nicky sets joe’s poems to music because they’re beautiful and he doesn’t want to forget them
nicky learning the songs quynh and andy taught him, the ones only they remember anymore, learning them by heart so he remembers all of them
i included this in you're not alone but joe teaching nicky the lullabies his mother used to sing and nicky remembering them and later booker doing a similar thing but for the songs he used to sing to their kids
and i am absolutely overthinking this now but he creates little individual tunes for each member of their family and specific other details that come up a lot and plays little pieces that tell particular stories and after a while the others learn to distinguish what the music means when he plays it: they can’t always tell the full story but they can guess at some parts
i might add More Thoughts because i have a lot but yea. nicky remembering through music
#this is what we're doing today so yeah!#im gonna. gonna put this in a fic now#or probably multiple#the old guard#nicolo di genova#nicky!!!#neon has thoughts

Can we please get your essay about Nicky's feeling towards the possibility of losing Joe?
so the Thing about nicky’s thoughts on losing joe vs joe’s thoughts on losing nicky, like i mentioned in the other post, is that nicky’s thoughts arent prioritized in the film the same way as joe’s. we see several long, drawn out scenes where joe is hovering over nickys body or something of the like, and its pointedly shown again & again to the audience that the idea of losing nicky horrifies joe.
the closest thing we get to that w nicky is when joe is stabbed and nicky lunges for him, which is a split second shot-- you know, it doesnt Linger like it does w joe on the van or joe after keane
(longish post under cut)
so like. the movie does Not prioritize showing nicky’s fear of loss- nicky’s fear of loss is even less prioritized than andy’s, where we see her urging booker to get up after the grenade. the only other scene we get with nicky confronting the idea of joe dying is when The Lads are talking about lykon, and we see a muscle in nicky’s jaw jump before he looks over to joe
(and we see, when the camera cuts to joe, that joe was already looking at nicky)
what we do see in regards to nicky’s thoughts on loss/death, (which are both scenes where the focus is placed solely on him), is 1.) the scene where he talks to nile about destiny and 2.) the scene where he talks to merrick about death
and both of those scenes kind of imply nicky believes in a... higher power, i guess. theres a million words worth of meta (that i wont write) about how complicated joe & nicky’s relationship with religion must be, i mean living with andromache ‘i was once worshiped as a god’ the scythian would be Enough in that regard, but immortality is going to shake up your relationship with god, and thats not even factoring in the whole gay business.
and-- there’s this post going around with a g rucka quote that i reblogged that says that homophobia is a modern, western invention, which is true in a lot of ways, but both the quran and the bible condemn homosexuality-- the story of sodom and gomorrah are in both. and as much as its true that The Gay Shit wasnt taken as seriously as a sin in Ye Olden Days.... like, still, god isnt cool with gays. he never has been.
and that must be like. a weird thing for them. that theyre, you know, granted this supernatural ability, this immortality, and also tossed together the way they were?
i mean, do you ever thing about it? a quick google search of ‘how many people have there been ever‘ claims that humanity has been around for 50,000 years and that there have been 108 billion people who’ve lived over those years. and joe and nicky, they managed to meet, over those 50000 years. same lifetime. same year. same month. same day. same city. same hour. same battle. same minute. AND they killed each other.
and then, on top of that, they were both immortals. thats, what, for just one of them, a 7/108,000,000,000 chance? and i dont even know how to calculate the statistics of them both being immortal, then both killing each other. its fucking boggling, the chances of that. and then on top of that, they were both gay, and then, on top of that, they ended up being perfect for each other.
ITS BOGGLING
i dont know how you can walk away from an experience like that and not believe in some higher power, but it must feel weird to, you know, believe in this god that condemns people like you, but also placed you in this situation.
anyways, off of that rant, nicky seems to believe in some higher power. fate, destiny, god, whatever. but he says ‘we were meant to find each other. its like destiny.’ to nile, while looking at joe. (and you know a lot of people dismiss nicky as the less romantic of the two but its not joe who basically said he and nicky were soulmates or anything, nickys just more subtle about affection grumble grumble grumble)
but anyways nicky says or implies he believes he and joe were Brought Together By fate/god/destiny/etc. and then, when talking to merrick, he says ‘the only reason we haven’t [died yet] is that it’s not our time yet. if it’s now andromache’s, nothing you can do will stop it.’
so nicky also believes that the time of their deaths is ordained by.... fate/god/destiny/whatever
and theres also something to be said... in my other post i talked about how scary the idea of losing andy mustve been to joe and nicky in that moment, given how long they knew her, how much they relied on her, how much they loved her, and how little they knew about her condition, or how quickly she might bleed out in front of them. its a terrifying experience, but nicky’s response to it was, ‘if it’s now her time...’
and thats not to say nicky doesnt love andy, thats not to say nicky wouldnt kill to keep andy alive, thats not to say nicky wouldnt take a bullet for andy. because he does. we see him do that. he’ll fight for andy because he loves andy, but he finds out she may die in front of his face, and there isnt a hint of panic to him.
he loves her, he’ll fight for her, he’ll worry about her, but the idea of her dying doesnt panic him like it panics joe. does it scare him? yea. does it devastate him? yea. look at his little face.
does he react like joe reacts? not even close
because nicky has this faith, and thats what i meant about nicky and joe having this fear vs faith dynamic. nicky believes in some higher power-- this power put them together, made them immortal, and gifted nicky with the love of his life. this higher power decides when they die.
and you know, why would this higher power put joe and nicky together like that, only to take them out separately? he never directly says as much, [So This Is Me Speculating] but i think nicky believes that he and joe are going to go out together. because theyre meant to be together. theyre not meant to be separated
(and: thought i just had, but that reminds me of that interview were marwan k and luca m were asked where theyd like to see joe and nicky taken in the story and lucas like ‘always together <333333′ and marwans like ‘ok but what if one of them DIED’. the method acting....)
but anyways joe on the other hand just doesnt seem to have that comfort
and-- thats also not to say nicky’s like, immune to fear of loss. like i said, there’s that scene when they talk about lykon, where nicky looks scared. hes still, you know, frightened of losing joe, but i think he finds comfort in this faith that joe just doesnt have
and nicky- he’ll fight for joe like he’ll fight for andy, because he loves joe, and he doesnt want to see joe hurt, doesnt want him to be hurt, but i dont think nicky’s like, gripped by this single-minded panic that joe is gonna perma-die every time he gets harmed
but you know, like i said, we just dont see much of nicky and loss, so a lot of what im saying here is speculation

tbh booker is the most normal person out of the original guard, and that’s probably why nile was able to relate to him so much
like. cynically atheist andy who’s tired of the world and everything in it and able to kill a dozen men in a church without blinking an eye? peak opposite of optimistic, hopeful, spiritual nile who had nightmares over killing the man who killed her
then you have thousand-year-old Joe and Nicky who are, albeit, definitely more hopeful and optimistic than andy, and def more spiritual, but who switch languages every sentence and communicate without saying a word and just say shit like “his kiss still thrills me even after a millennium?” like cmon, they’re on a whole other LEVEL of communication and philosophy that nile’s millennial brain just isn’t used to wrapping itself around
but booker? “lol I’m in misery haha” booker? PEAK millennial culture. you can’t tell me that man doesn’t sound like every single depressed millennial’s twitter account ever. “it’s not always like this, by the way” (when he was healing after getting hit with the grenade) = “hey kid I remember what it was like to be in your shoes, it’s gonna be okay”
like yea booker was super depressed and drank a lot and ended up betraying the group, but also he was the only one of them who still seemed to remember,,, what it was like to be just a normal person

I love all TOG character but this is strictly a Booker appreciation post sorry (mostly related to the movie before someone tells me) :
- This man! Cares for his family so much! And of course Andy is looking after Nile but every single interaction he has with Nile he is so caring, she acts a bit as a foil regarding his history with his family, and he genuinely wants to keep her from hurting.
- Of course, of course, there is the big elephant in the room (BETRAYAL!) and you know I understand, but he was so convinced he was doing what she wanted. He was coming from a good place, even though he screwed up big (BIG) time.
- Also regarding that, once he realized the trouble they were in, aka the Andy-not-healing-but-has-been-shot issue, his attitude changed 180 like he would not have let her die if it was the last thing he ever did.
- I've just talked about Booker and Nile, but Booker and Andy! Obviously they have been paired off a lot, since Nicky and Joe work so well together they probably split the group that way (at least before Nile joins them). Also, they both are kind of looking for their purpose... I can't put it into words effectively, but their bond is so strong! (you know, ''you and me, always'') holy moly and when they are staying in the cave Andy acts pretty natural still HE NOTICES something is wrong and asks!!!!
- And the main! point! of this post!! Nile wakes up after the nightmares, okay okay, talks about it to boys, and yea, you dream of each other until you meet, but you need to realize that, unless I am very wrong, Booker has never met Quynh! and he doesn't say a word, but looked so tired, and like he knew what Nile's going to say, even before she says it. He has been having these dreams for what, 200 years? That, on top of his old family trauma...
That isn't even half of it, but Booker . 💕
#the old guard#full disclaimer i'm watching a video while writing this so some parts might not make 100% perfect sense#deal with it haha

So I watched the Old Guard yesterday on Lisia’s suggestion and kinda fell in love with this utterly ridiculous film. And proceeded to live stream all my reactions to it while she was away, thus filling her poor discord with 20 messages that essentially boiled down to my pterodactyl screaming over Nicky and Joe in particular having a 1,000 year old homosexual romance and they still love each other and ugh 2020 is a terrible yea but a part of me cannot get over the idea of a major film not only having two out and gay protagonists but actually painting their relationship not in a shitty, tropey and disrespectful light.
I grew up watching the Highlander movies/the terribad TV series so I have a soft spot for immortals walking through history and how much that would utterly suck. Booker’s whole convo about having to sit there and watch everyone you know and love die while you have to go on is just....unnnnnnnnfff. Sums up how much the whole immortal trope would be the actual worst.
But then you have Nicky and Joe who quite literally are enemies to lovers trope brought to fucking life being there for each other through the centuries and my little shipper heart has melted. I also felt patently ridiculous cause everyone in this movie with the exception of maybe Booker was giving me gay and bi-disaster vibes. And just imagine that energy being the whole shtick for the key to immortality being a gay warrior type.
Though real talk? This movie seriously gave me Action Pack movie vibes which were just backdoor pilots for various tv series like Hercules.
I legit got the feel this was netflix testing the waters to see if people would watch something like this and I kinda want this to become a thing. Either a movie series of a tv series and I would shamelessly watch the shit out of that. I am kinda living for Joe and his supreme petty bitch energy and am seriously hoping we get some good fic out of this fandom.

Andromaquynh fic: In Your Stead
Read full fic on ao3 | WIP trash Part 1-Part 15
Jessus fucking christ lilo it's 4:17 why are you writing fanfic
Alright at this point I don't know whether the timeline lines up switch-wise but who cares I'll fix it for ao3
...it's 5 am now so my inability to care about accuracies and consistencies miight have something to do with that~ perhaps I should wait to finish this until tomorrow
It is now tomorrow and I have a sleep deprivation induced headache, but I'm still gonna keep writing bc I could get an email from my prof any minute now bc that woman apparently hasn't heard of the invention of a weekend, and then I'm busy with thesis again, sooo
Also I looked it up and around England the sea is about a hundred metres deep and the deepest a submarine went is 10000 so yea
I rly gotta rewatch the movie before I post this on ao3 to get more accurate quotes etc ;{
But for now, as is
Part 16:
Andy is so incredibly done with the world.
She has tried again and again to find Quynh, has actually made it to the bottom of the ocean now. Around England, it's not even that deep- what once seemed impossible now easily doable with legally if sketchily obtained military grade submarines... Goodness, there are other submarines that made it a hundred times deeper than the ocean in the areas Quynh is most likely to be.
Still, she hasn't found her.
Getting down there is no longer the problem- finding the correct place is. Kilometres upon kilometres of space. Metal detectors are useless, too, with how much trash humans have thrown into the ocean in the recent past. It feels like every invention, every bit of progress on this planet, is made null and void by people being complete and utter arseholes.
And there are so many of those.
What has Andy's mood down even more is the fact that, when going on missions with the team, she has to deal with people who are plain Evil on a daily basis. Not only that, but their missions all seem to be so useless. There are no longer wars to win on a single battlefield, only single terrorists to stop while five others do their thing elsewhere, criminals to detain and crimes to stop that are so vile they are even new to Andromache.
She keeps fighting for humanity but humanity has yet to prove that it is worth fighting for.
~
For a year, Andy sticks to herself.
Ignoring the missions and the team and the rest of humanity. She barely talks to Yusuf and Nicolò, unable to handle their Cheerful when she is feeling so down. When she texts Booker in-between dives, it's only to commiserate about how there are no good things to live for (later, she will curse herself for that).
At the moment, she has a single focus: she needs to find Quynh, the one person she can count on being Good. The one person she really Loves. (Alright, that isn't fair on the rest of the team, but at the moment she only associates them with misery).
She still doesn't find her.
When she is sitting back in her flat, crossing out parts of her maps of the sea go show where she has already checked and despairing about the fact that even that doesn't mean much when the metal coffin and Quynh in it could have moved who knows how far in the meantime through currents or animals or whatever- when Booker calls her about a mission, she's desperate enough for a change that she accepts.
~
Morocco hasn't changed much since Andy last visited. A smile curls her lips as she remembers Nico's antics with the Baklava. She wonders whether he will have bought any again this time.
“So, why are we here?”
Booker wants to work with an old contact again. Andy knows it’s a bad idea. One of the few hard rules she has followed for millenia, in fact. But... She’s so done caring. She doesn’t have the energy to fight. She wants to go on a successful mission with her friends, and if they can save those kids...
They go to meet the others. Andy hugs Nicky, hard, before she lets Joe whirl her around the room- he’s probably the only person who would do that and survive. Surrounded by her family, Andy feels like her smile is real again for once.
After that, it turns into a shitshow really really fast.
Andy feels exhausted.
It might take years until they take out everyone involved to get rid of the immediate threat, centuries before everyone involved and their children are gone and she won’t have to worry about them anymore.
She just wants to live! It feels like, for centuries now, all she ever did was survive.
Maybe humans just weren’t made for immortality.
Just after she thinks that, of course, they dream of the new one.
~
There's still more to come :)

Fifty US senators affirmed that they indeed do believe that the activities of human beings contribute to climate change. OK. But 49 senators—fully half the upper house that represents our grand republic—do not. So, hey, you go out there and burn whatever carbon you want to? Not sure what to make of that. But we thought you might want to know just which representatives have absolved you of your responsibility to the planet. So here’s a list—of the senators who think climate change is some other species’ problem, and then the senators who wish we’d maybe do something about it.

#oh hello op i think u love u #i do think joe has some deeply viscerally terrible feelings abt seeing nicky strapped down and experimented on and killed by kane #but i also think that is not the BASIS for him being so angry with booker #there is a version of this story where joe and nicky go through the same #things but booker. upon realizing how wrong everything has gone. tells nile and andy and makes Differenf Choices #and i think in that scenario despite all that visceral fear joe probably is a lot less furious #because you do not survive as a good and kind person for a thousand years by being by fear and vengence #joe’s problem is that booker turned his back on their family even as everything was going to shit #he didn’t tell the others when things went wrong he didn’t see that andy wasn’t healing he put stupid trust in a stranger amd risked #their entire family. i think joe (and nicky but in a slightly different way) has a deep sense of responsibility #and therefore protectiveness over the whole team #and i can understand why he has SERIOUS concerns about keeping booker around at the end of the movie #i don’t necessarily agree but oh man do i get it #OH ALSO ANYWAYS #WHAT I CAME HERE TO SAY BEFORE I WROTE AN ENTIRE ESSAY #is that tog gave us literally the perfect found family platonic intimacy deep love and friendship between nonromantic partners and #my aroace ass is deeply salty abt how we STILL always prioritize the romantic relationships 🙄 @axemom I'm fishing your tags out of the notes bc yea you get it
i don’t know when the headcanon that joe was angry at booker because nicky got hurt became so popular but i absolutely cannot avoid looking at it with 🤨🤨🤨 in my face. they both got hurt, andy was the one who ended up losing her immortality midway, they were all captured and at high risk due to what booker did. the grief joe mentions that they have even more now is all of that, the fact that their family as a whole was a risk because of him, who was a part of that family and should know better, not just nicky getting hurt

i was rewatching TOG and holy.... on the train, when they all dream of nile dying, i noticed that booker seems to react perhaps the most strongly out of all of them? he even says 'i felt her die' which wasn't mentioned by andy, joe or nicky and then it struck me like a bolt out of a clear blue sky: this is the first death of another immortal he's ever felt. he knows what death tastes like in his own mouth but never in another's. which just makes me so sad and book just makes me hurt
you know one of the (many) improvements they make in the movie as compared to the comic is that in the comic booker is like.. super casual about dreaming about nile? hes also the only one who argues for finding her at first, and joe and nicky only agree because theyre worried nile will lead bad guys to them. its such a bizarre way to handle that scene, that this is booker’s first new immortal and hes the one that handled it the best/most casually? it was so weird i have no idea why it was written like that initially.
but yea booker having that reaction to nile makes all the sense in the world, i mean andy was dreaming of quynh for centuries and joe & nicky prolly dreamed of andy & quynh for around a century too. book’s probably dreamed of quynh but thats obviously different in a lot of ways (and ive mentioned this before but book’s first death was being hung and nile’s first death was getting her throat slit. neck trauma buddies!!)

The Senate rejected the Green New Deal on Tuesday, in a decisive 57-0 vote that Democrats decried as a political stunt meant to divide their caucus.
Every Republican opposed the measure. They were joined by four senators who caucus with the Democrats—Senator Joe Manchin, from the coal-heavy state of West Virginia, along with Senators Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, Doug Jones of Alabama, and Angus King of Maine.
Uniting the four dissenters: a sense that the Green New Deal, in its current form, is neither practical nor attainable.
“I agree with proponents of the Green New Deal that we need decisive action and ambitious goals to protect our planet for future generations,” said King, an independent who usually votes with Democrats, in a statement. “But at the same time, I believe that the best way to fully address this challenge is to set realistic goals.”
Very little of the drama on Tuesday mattered in a lasting way. The Green New Deal resolution was always doomed to fail, since Republicans hold a majority in the upper chamber. And even its successful passage may not have meant much. The Green New Deal, as it stands today, is a non-binding plan to make a plan. While its supporters envision a herculean effort to remake the economy while fighting climate change, its current text is extremely vague, authorizing no new programs in any useful detail.
Nor was Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who orchestrated the vote, interested in furnishing any of those specifics. The details were never the point: McConnell sought to force individual Democrats into taking a stand on the expansive proposal, which remains controversial in the caucus.
Read: [A centuries-old idea could revolutionize climate policy]
In protest, 43 Democrats declined to oblige him, abstaining from the roll call and voting only “present.” All six Senate Democrats openly running for president—that is, Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar, and Kirsten Gillibrand—co-sponsored the resolution but still voted present on it. Yet due to its four dissensions, the caucus still failed to mount a unified front.
Not that Republicans perfectly executed their strategy either. Polling on the Green New Deal has not nearly been as catastrophic as GOP leaders initially hoped. Sixty-three percent of Americans believe the Republican position on climate change is “outside the mainstream,” according to a recent NBC/Wall Street Journal poll.
McConnell originally meant to hold the test vote in February, but he delayed it by four weeks after Democrats threatened a boycott. And while Republicans have shot down Democratic climate proposals, they have offered no consensus alternatives of their own. “It’s clear why we’re opposed to the Green New Deal,” Senator Lamar Alexander told Politico on Monday, “but it’s not as clear what we’re for.”
While Democrats agree on the danger of climate change, they have their own problems. As a counter to McConnell’s gambit, Senate Democrats have offered a resolution that does little more than say that climate change is real, human-caused, and that someone with power in the federal government should do something about it. Here is its full text:
That it is the sense of Congress that—
(1) climate change is real;
(2) human activity during the last century is the dominant cause of the climate crisis; and
(3) the United States and Congress should take immediate action to address the challenge of climate change.
The resolution has so far only attracted the support of one Republican, Senator Susan Collins of Maine. McConnell has not yet scheduled it for a vote. And even if he did, it seems to miss the underlying critique guiding the Sunrise Movement, the youth-led activist group that supports the Green New Deal—that Democrats, despite agreeing on the danger of climate change, do not have a consensus plan to do anything about it. (Though The Atlantic has learned that House Democratic leaders are set to announce a climate plan meant to unite their caucus on Wednesday.)
Read: [7 reasons Democrats won’t pass a Green New Deal]
After the vote on Tuesday evening, the senators who opposed the Green New Deal explained their break with party unity, while emphasizing the need for some action on climate change.
“I firmly believe that as a country, we need to act decisively to mitigate the effects of climate change,” said Jones, who faces re-election in Alabama next year. Sinema, of Arizona, called for a “realistic, achievable solution.” Manchin, a longtime ally of the coal industry and the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, said in a statement that “we need to focus on real solutions that recognize the role that fossil fuels will continue to play.”
He then affirmed: “Manmade climate change is real and it’s a serious threat.”
King, the independent of Maine, explained his no vote in a statement that ran more than 500 words. “As someone who has spent a significant amount of his life working in renewable energy and is well-versed in the technology, I am concerned that the overly aggressive goals in the resolution I voted against today are unrealistic and far too broad,” he said, alluding to his experience founding an energy-efficiency company in the early 1990s.
“I want to emphasize that my skepticism surrounding the current resolution should not be misconstrued as being uninterested in pursuing the most ambitious and realistic action on climate change; I simply differ with the most effective way to accomplish that goal,” King added. He also decried that “the Senate Majority Leader’s first vote on climate change mitigation isn’t a serious attempt to solve the problem facing our future generations, but rather a cynical act of political theater.”
King, who has co-sponsored other renewable-energy bills, does not face re-election until 2024.
There is some precedent for a split on these types of votes in the Democratic caucus. In July 2017, McConnell held a vote on a doomed Medicare for All proposal. While most Democrats voted present; a few of the caucus’s red-state senators opposed it. The final whip count was the same: 57 nay, 0 yea, 43 present. The episode is now mostly forgotten.

More Returns
Here's a superb podcast on Peaks. May 30 is the most recent episode. A great listen. Counter Esperanto Podcast: Tangents About Twin Peaks: 10th Secret: The Return
On Tue, Jun 13, 2017 at 1:53 PM, Dom wrote: I'll check it out tonight.
So my Diane prediction was on the fucking money.
I got another theory I'm working on.
Who's the mysterious billionaire? I heard some people say it may be Audrey Horne. I heard some people say it is Jack (John Justice Wheeler). I heard some people say it is Phillip Jeffries or Evil Cooper.
Put on your tinfoil hat for this one. The Billionaire is Leo Johnson. He lived through his spider ordeal. Then he took everything that Windom left behind (notes, computer files, other assorted Windom things) and built a criminal empire. I find it very hard to believe that the fucking casting director's son who was in the 1st two seasons and the fucking movie is NOT in this one.
The secret history of twin peaks tells us what happens to a bunch of characters like Leo. For instance Hank dies in prison. But not one word in the book about Leo? I got to believe that he lives and he’s not just a slobbering fool any more. I know this is probably not going to happen. But that's my theory.
I cannot imagine Leo is a rich billionaire — how did he make his money? A theory that makes sense I’ve heard on EW TP podcast that it could be BOB-Cooper attempting to catch Good Cooper if he ever left the Lodge. But really, I have no idea… not as of end of P7.
I like how Lynch-Frost are using all official Twin Peaks releases as canon to draw the narrative from — Laura’s Diary, FWWM, Missing Pieces of blu-ray edition, as well as many classic episode threads.
And like Erik, I KNOW, that Sheriff Harry S. Truman will make an appearance in this season. I feel it in my bones.
It’s looking grim for Harry — or rather, it sounds grim from Frank saying to Harry, “beat this thing.” But actually I can see Ontkean coming out of retirement to have a role toward the end of the series. I also (want to) believe Josie returning … maybe she’s the billionaire, but why would she make such a contraption mounted to the side of building?
On Sun, Jun 25, 2017 at 2:26 AM, Erik wrote: Good Morning Gents. Grab a cup a joe and settle down a minute. I got some backed up information for yous … << Starts Tape Recorder…. >>
Spot on is right Mr Domi. You got that Diane was Laura Dern AND that she drinks at the Pub we went to. I even want to say she is seated in the area of the bar that we were sitting at that night. Glad it wasn't raining when we went, "FUCK Gene Kelly, You mother fucker!!" LOL I love Albert, he is my favorite this season. (Location: Max Von's Bar = Casey's Irish Pub, 619 South Grand, LA)
So Episode 7 should have shut up all those whiner's and complainer's of Ep 6. There was a lot of hate on the internet, and even in our FB Group, about that episode. I was ok with it. I did not like the scene with the kid getting hit by the truck, but the scene ended with the Fat Trout Telephone pole, so I'm ok with it.
"Lynch has gotten flak for the male gaze in his work, but the problems go a lot deeper than lingering shots on female anatomy.…” Laura Hudson in Vulture.
Also in EP 6 we finally got two major new pieces of music from Angelo, not his best work, but still great to hear. The overall lack of his music is my biggest complaint this season in case I didn't make that clear.
When Johnny Jewel's Windswept first appeared, I thought that was Badalamenti finally debuting new music. I was definitely disappointed it was not Angelo, no disrespect to Johnny. But I agree with you Erik about no AB original score. That music is what made classic Peaks so memorable. I don’t get why Lynch is using such popular music. There really wan’t any such tracks in FWWM, it was Angelo’s music and further cemented Peaks as evergreen. Lynch is acting like Scorcese in the epic cinematic story… and he doesn’t need to. Marty did not have a Badalamenti in his arsenal. Lynch does. Please use him.
EP 7...There's a body alright.. is definitely the shit. Now we are cooking. Jerry!!!! Come out of it man... Lets get Ben and Jerry back in action, not disfunction. The diary pages, Annie's message from FWWM, Leland hiding pages, DIANE from hell! ... Bringing it all back home.
There’s a dark undercurrent with Diane and Cooper. All signs are indicating something very bad happened to Diane. I think BOB-Cooper raped her.
I wonder where Frank Truman was at the time of Laura's murder? He says he remembers Leland, her father, did it, but is not really familiar with the case. BUT why the heck is Frank not asking "So what is "the Lodge" you keep talking about?” Hawk?
The way Hawk talks so knowledgable about both Lodges and the way Frank does not question or disbelieve him, then it must be common knowledge among the indigenous culture. Wonder if Frank is a Bookhouse Boy?
Ancient Doc Hayward, kinda sad, but he was still funny. Did you catch his Skype name? MiddleburyDoc... Warren Frost was actually living in VT right? They probably actually did just Skype him and screen capture it…lol
I caught that right away about Warren Frost’s Skype handle. And no doubt, Frost stayed in Vermont to do his scene. That just recorded the screen.… I do miss Briggs. Yet he died long before Lynch-Frost’s three-year tenure writing the new story, they had plenty of time to work the presence of him into the story.
Briggsy.. Oh Major Briggs. how we miss thee. Should be interesting how this plays out. And When the hell are we going to go back to I bet the road where Andy is waiting to meet the Truck owner is up there at Frankln Canyon Pond.
The Dog Leg.... WTF? Is Joe McCluskey the guy that rigged the car and Mr C Killed earlier on? I do think the Psycho Little guy with the Ice Pick and Gun is kinda silly. Over the top for no reason. Oh well.… It's kinda silly also that no one has taken Dougie to the Doctor. Everyone just plays along. we have to suspend disbelief I guess.
OMG enough with the guy sweeping at the Roadhosue. Is this all the extra time he told Shotime he needed more money for to tell the story properly? lol and more music used in hundreds of shows and commercials. I love Booker T and the MGs don't get me wrong, but ... UGH I miss you Angelo... Also... Kinda weird to see Jean Michel... Did Jacque Renault have a twin brother? lol Mr. C and Ray getting out of Prison.. Bad stuff gonna happen. I think they might have used San Bernadino County Jail for this locaton. The Cell block Cooper is located on looks familar. I will compare some screen grabs from my Locaton and Publicity Photos we took for Beyond Scared Straight at that jail.
And beause they needed to pad the ending to get to the alloted running time... Back to the RR Diner for the end scene, and yet another over-used stock song they probably had to pay more to use than what they paid Angelo for everything. Plus, I liked that song better when they used it in the X-files episode “Home" but No, I'm not bitter.
General notes: Glad Naomi Watts has such a big part. She really owns her scenes. Wish Jennifer Jason Leigh was more present but Mr C just left Jail for somewhere... It's slightly brilliant how Lynch (but probably Frost came up with it) still has made Harry a character in the show. even if only on the phone and never even heard. I feel like Harry is there kinda. Also brilliant... Robert Forrester.... wow. Wish he was in the original or the movie. Not sure how I feel with Dern as Diane. I'll go with it and see what happens.
Outstanding questions for me....(cause I haven't been reading blogs or listening to podcasts)
What is up with all the Arthurian Legend references? Dougie lives on Lancalot Court, down the street from the Merlin Market. Janey-E meets for the ransom drop on the corner of Gueneivere and Merlin. And of course, Glastonbury Grove... Pete Martel: "King Arthur's burried in England!"
Why is it when Dougie puts his thumb up or his hand out to shake, he turns his body 180 degrees?
What is up with the creepy guy (from Mulholland Diner scene) in the Vegas Office? I can't seem to catch his meaning in the story line.
What is up with Cooper's Room Key from the Great Northern? If has finally made it back to Ben Horne...Soooo?
One last question... Did Lynch quit smoking? He made two references to people (Gordon Cole even) quitting. Did we ever even see Cole smoke in the series or movie? weird for him to say he quit when the character never smoked on camera. "You think about that Tammy."
On Jun 25, 2017, at 4:29 PM, Dom wrote: I think Frank Truman was a police officer in Seattle during Laura's investigation if I remember the book correctly. But I think that a "Sheriff Truman" has been in power for over 60 consecutive years now between the 2 brothers and their father. It sort of like there must always be a Stark in Winterfell.
To my knowledge that was the first time ever we have heard name Joe McCluskey. I have no clue who that is. But I have a feeling we will learn.
Yea, I don’t recollect Joe McCluskey. Gotta watch again to see if he first appears or is mentioned earlier.
I think Ike the Spike is either from the black lodge or an agent of the black lodge. Remember he smelled "funny" per the little girl.
Spike did look a little monstery, his teeth especially.
I actually loved that scene of the sweeping. I could just imagine everyone watching was freaking out and I enjoyed that. And I thought that Walter did some great acting while on the phone as Jean-Michel. "He owes me for two!"
That ending scene from the RR diner was weird as shit. Its either the worst continuity error of all time or something truly weird happened there. Completely different set of people dining there after David Lynch's son runs in and asks if anyone has seen Billy.
Lynch did not quit smoking. He, like Harry Dean are lifers.
Both Laura Dern and Naomi Watts are killing their roles. Both doing a fantastic job. I just cannot wait to see them come face to face over Dougie.
And MacLachlan! All his Cooper iterations are really well done. I love that BOB-Cooper character. Can’t wait to see what trouble he kicks up now!
My new tin foil theory is that we may be dealing with 2 Twin Peaks. Twins of each other if you will. I'm still working this one out. Different versions of the same town in different universes a part of a greater multiverse?
Did you notice Andy was wearing a rolex? Kind of weird.
…And he was supposed to meet the guy at 4:30. Is that one of the numbers from ????? ?
The guy from the Vegas office is working directly for Phillip Jeffries or whoever is pretending to be him IMO.
Don’t overlook the black soot guy walking in the hallway toward the female FBI agent in the morgue. I think it’s related to the guy next to Bill Hastings cell.…
Lots of Arthurian Legend stuff from way back when. I never got that. But its seems to be very important. I would love to go to Merlin's Market.
During the end credits from the last episode buried in the music is Windham Earle's theme mixed into the background too!!!!!
I might try headphones for tonight’s part to see exactly what sounds I miss. I know there’s a lot of low audible noise and rumbling that I don’t hear when our apartment is 86º and the fan is going.…
On Jun 25, 2017, at 8:10 PM, Dom wrote: Some last minute thoughts...
Yeah I agree about MacLachlan is killing it and should win an Emmy for best actor. Black soot guy is awesome and its the same dude for sure from the jail cell. Some people seem to think we have seen him a third time as a homeless man outside of Vegas at the Rachera Rosa is whatever it is called. I don't think that we did. I will need to re-watch that again. Another tin foil hat theory. On those three pages from Laura's diary she refers to knowing who it is and that its not Bob. At least everyone thinks she is referencing Leland. That is probably most right. However I am thinking that she is referring to an evil more powerful and sadistic than even Bob.Like whatever came out of the glass box and mutilated those younglings.
On Jun 25, 2017, at 8:17 PM, Erik wrote: > "Yea, I don’t recollect Joe McCluskey."
I am thinking if the guy in the diner eating food non-stop the whole scene with Ray and the chick Mr C shot in the head. Just before he kills her, he tells her "i killed joe, and the she freaks out, knowing the gig is up. The previous scene the eating guy "joe" does something to a car in storage and then cooper like squeezes his face for a whole minute. Could be McCluskey?
> "Lynch did not quit smoking."
Well, its mighty fine of him to send a non smoking message to all the youths. Considering Cole does not smoke, it is a conscious message.
> "All his Cooper iterations are really well done."
Yes, Kyle will def get an Emmy nomination. Dern and Watts will also I predict.
> “RR diner was weird as shit. Its either the worst continuity error of all time or something truly weird happened there.”
There are no accidents on a Lynch set. If an error occurs and he likes it he will use it. So who knows why he did it. On the same level as the windows flashing code on the FBI jet. He is throwing out decoys i feel.
> “then it (the Lodge) must be common knowledge among the indigenous culture.”
Then why the heck is Truman not like "well lets go up there" nor does Hawk tell him he was up in those woods when Log Lady last called.
> “Don’t overlook the black soot guy walking in the hallway”
Nope, I did not mention him cause i consider it another decoy. Kinda like the shambling being behind the diner in Mulholland Drive...never came up again. i am sure he will play a part at some point.
But i did forget to mention the playing card Mr. C showed the girl in the hotel bed before he shoots her. Aliens? Very well could be.
Have a good viewing. The damn internet saying EP 8 is extra noteworthy. Could it be Phillip Jeffries? Windom Earl? More Leland and Laura? (I actually doubt we will see either of them again). Audrey? Big Ed? They got plenty of options.
Cheers! ~G
