Day 02: Game drive in Serengeti National Park We have another full day in this wonderful park, rising early to make the most of our time. Our guides will choose the best spotting locations for the time of year; we can spend time at the Hippo pool watching these majestic animals laze about in the cool water happily living alongside the crocodiles, watch a big pride of lions, be in the middle of the migration, sometimes surrounded by wildebeest, sometimes by zebras, which travel with the wildebeest. We journey from the wide-open plains to the kopjes: these volcanic rocky outcrops provide protection and shelter for a wide variety of animals and from the top, we can look out across the vast grasslands of the Serengeti. This diverse and interesting landscape will provide us with the ultimate in game viewing, we will hopefully see all of the plain games; elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions and if you are lucky the elusive leopard and cheetah, as well as huge amounts of interesting birdlife, from the elegant secretary birds to the flightless ostrich. We return to our special tented camp for the night. Dinner and overnight at Serengeti Singita Tented Camp: Full board.

Day 03: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater. We start the day with an early morning game drive before heading to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ngorongoro is a special place in that it is a Conservation Area, not a National Park; this means that the whole area is managed for both the animals and the local Masai people who graze their cattle alongside the indigenous wildlife. During the drive-in Ngorongoro, we have a chance to glimpse something of the Masai way of life. After stopping at the entrance gate, where there is a chance to learn more about this fascinating volcanic landscape, we will drive around the rim of the Crater itself, and from here we can look down and see the herd of wildebeest or buffalos. Finally, we descend into the crater. The crater walls provide a natural sanctuary for the animals, which means there is plenty to see: lions, elephants, buffalo, rhino and leopard (if you are lucky). The only animal you won’t see in here is a giraffe, whose long legs are unable to cope with the steeps sides of the crater. In the late afternoon, we travel back to our special tented camp. Dinner and overnight at Kirurumo tented camp: Full board. Day 04: Game drive in Lake Manyara National Park We depart from your lodge in Karatu and proceed to Lake Manyara National Park. Although small in size, this park is one of the most diverse reserves in the country. Lake Manyara covers two-thirds of the park. At the backdrop is the wall of the Great Rift Valley, before which lies the groundwater forest, areas of open grassland near the lake foreshore, and the Soda Lake. We enjoy a picnic lunch in this area, which consists of open grassy areas, hot springs, dense woodlands, and steep mountainsides. Lake Manyara National Park is a birding paradise that has more than 350 species of bird. The park is also famed for its unique and elusive tree-climbing lions. After lunch, we travel back to Kilimanjaro Airport for the flight to Zanzibar. Arrival in Zanzibar you will meet us at the airport and pick up with a private transfer to Nungwi. Dinner and overnight at The Nungwi Inn Hotel (Bed and breakfast).

Traveling to Africa has been one of my long-term dreams come true. For last 3 years or so, I was researching on the same, checking for safari destination, costs and considering how to plan my African safari. But before I talk about this once in a lifetime East African safari adventure, let me start with some insights on Africa.

Myths & Misconceptions about Africa

Africa is a country

Whenever I have spoken to people about Kenya Tanzania, most of the times people have used the word south Africa in return. In India Africa means south Africa for many. Let me state here, South Africa is one of the nations/countries that is part of Africa. Africa is a continent and countries like Kenya Tanzania are East African nations of Africa.

Africa is dangerous, people are violent, not a safe place to be

When we talk about Africa, we are talking about a huge continent. Not all countries are at war and not all places are unsafe. With stories on civil wars, child soldiers, pirates, and revolutions, it’s no wonder that people fear to go to Africa. However, there is a different side to it. The way we treat Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India differently even though they all come under Asia, similarly all African nations can’t be treated in the same way.

Mauritius, Botswana, Ghana, Senegal, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, and Namibia are some of the most peaceful nations within Africa. Staying safe is a matter of common sense and please read travel warnings before concluding anything about Africa. For example, It is absolutely safe to go to safari destinations in Africa.

Africa is the origin of many diseases and is ridden with diseases

Diseases have taken millions of lives each year in Africa due to lack of childhood immunization and lack of basic healthcare. Many diseases in-fact originated from South America, Europe, and Asia but the outbreak in Africa has been impactful only because of lack of basic healthcare.

However, there has been a huge change since last decade. Most deadly diseases that plagued African nations once are completely preventable by vaccinations and simple hygiene today.

For travelers from the west, even the more exotic diseases of Africa namely, yellow fever, typhoid etc can be avoided simply by vaccination. And as far as Malaria is concerned, it can be avoided using prophylactics, sprays and body creams. For HIV/Aids

Its always hot in Africa

Africa is not exclusively made of desert and Savannahs. There are high altitude mountains, rainforests and cool coastal peninsulas. Infact during winters, temperatures in sub Saharan regions plunge below freezing. Many African nations also record snow. Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains see enough snow to support a ski resort near Marrakesh.

We found Nairobi in May to have similar climate as Bangalore. While on roads in Kenya, there were a couple of stretches which made us feel as if we were in Europe.

All African countries are poor and need aid to develop

Africa is often painted with a sweeping stroke of doom and gloom. Bad news and sad stories sell more. There are many pre- conceived notions. Seychelles, Mauritius, Botswana, Namibia, Egypt and South Africa are some of the countries with a good standard of living and respectable GDP. Africa has four of the ten fastest growing economies in the world

Africa is cheap

Its not really cheap to travel in Africa. The cost of transport accommodation etc is almost at par with other places in other continents. Infact, safari destinations in Africa are a bit on a higher side because the season is limited to a few months and maintaining such properties in the middle of nowhere locations is a task in itself.

There is nothing to see apart from animals

That’s not true. We all know one of the oldest civilizations that developed around the Nile, the Egyptian civilization is from the same continent. Egypt has so much history, Nile river and Pyramids. Mauritius and Seychelles Zanzibar in Tanzania on the other hand are well known beach destinations.

For desert lovers, Namibia is the place to be, South Africa is one of the adventure capitals of the world and Marrakesh in Africa is well known cultural delight.

Food could be a big issue for travellers from the west

I never knew till my visit to east Africa that they have same rice, Lentils and chapati. Indian chapati is the same chapati in Swahili too. You do get the same tea, coffee and juices to drink. The same breads, eggs, pancakes and fruits to eat for breakfast and similar dishes for lunch and dinner. In East Africa, most good hotel chains are run by Indians so don’t worry, you will even find biryani, papad and pickle there.

Facts about Africa

Africa is the world’s second largest in size and second most-populous continent

It covers 6% of Earth’stotal surface area and 20% of its land area. about a fifth of the earth’s total landmass. This makes it larger than India, China, Mexico, USA and a huge chunk of Europe combined.

Africa is the most centrally located continent in the world. Both the prime meridian (0 degrees longitude), and the equator (0 degrees latitude) cut across it.

The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Seato the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast and the Atlantic Ocean to the west and still has the shortest coastline compared to its land mass.

There are approx. 54 fully recognized countries, nine territories and two independent states with limited or no recognition in the African continent

There are an estimated 1500-2000 African languages spoken in African of which 10-11 are most spoken.

Islam is the dominant religion in Africa. Christianity is the second.

There are 135 UNESCO world heritage sites in Africa which are located in approx. 37 countries across Africa.

World’s longest river Nile is in Africa. It is approx. 6600 km long and flows through 11 countries finally draining into Mediterranean sea.

Madagascar island in Africa is the fourth largest island in the world.

The Victoria Falls, located along the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Zambezi River is the fall’s main water source.

The second-largest freshwater lake in the world is lake Victoria of Africa.

World largest hot desert is of course Africa’s Sahara desert covering 9.1 million km2.

The highest point in Africa is Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

Both the world’s tallest and largest land animals come from Africa. They are the giraffe and African elephant, respectively.

A single tribe in Kenya-called the “Kalenjin”-produces most of the world’s fastest long-distance runners

And don’t consider Africa to be backward in terms of technology. There are more than 100 million Facebook users in Africa at present.

Where to go for best wildlife experience in Africa

Africa’s top 5 classic safari destinations along with most famous parks are

Kenya – Masai Mara

Tanzania – Serengeti

Botswana (one of the most expensive safari destinations)– Chobe National Park

South Africa – Kruger

Namibia- Etosha National park

However, Kenya Tanzania are literally the mecca of wildlife viewing. The annual migration of two million wildebeests plus hundreds of thousands of gazelles and zebras – followed by their predators in search of pasture and water – is one of the most impressive nature spectacles in the world which takes place between these two adjacent countries, Kenya and Tanzania. The animals make a 2000-kilometre trek between the Serengeti ecosystem from Tanzania to Kenya and then back.

National parks in East Africa – East Africa tour

The national parks fall primarily under the following countries

Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda

Kenya : Masai Mara National Park, one of the most popular across the world is in Kenya and one can see Kenya’s most abundant wildlife here. Masai Mara in Savanah in a part of the vast Greater Serengeti, where massive herds of animals make an annual migration across the plains. Apart from Mara Kenya does have many other good quality parks with abundant wildlife including Samburu, Tsavo, Amboseli, Lake Nakuru

Tanzania: Serengeti National Park is almost 5 times Masai Mara in size and houses part of the Serengeti National Park — the best park to see great herds of wildlife. Besides, one of our most favorite places in Tanzania is Ngorongoro conservation area or Ngorongoro crater adjacent to Serengeti. Over 30,000 animals live in the crater; it has the densest lion population in the world.

Mount Kilimanjaro national park, Tarangire National Park, lake manyara are noteworthy sites too in Tanzania.

Uganda: If you are interested in primates, you should choose Uganda. It offers the opportunity to get a close look at Chimpanzees, Gorillas, and others in their natural habitats.

When to go for Africa safari

The best time to travel to Africa depends on your specific destination. Overall, it’s best (but most expensive) to travel in the dry season, which corresponds with the region’s winter. For east African nations, Kenya and Tanzania, the best time is, of course, the migration time which is from July to September.

Visas and vaccinations for Africa

Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa offer Visa on arrival for Indians. The only thing you need is the passport and itinerary. Visa cost per person is approx. $50 per person for both the countries.

Yellow fever vaccination is a must for East African and Southern African nations. You need to carry the yellow card when you travel to these destinations. At the time of your exit from the country, this will be checked.

African Safari- How to book

There are three options

All inclusive safari packages in Africa offered by tour operators– These are guided, custom made and tailor-made packages for families and groups inclusive of food, tours, excursions, and accommodation. The vehicle is either a minivan or 4 by 4 land cruiser for road trips. And you also have flying safaris, you can directly fly into some of the parks instead of driving.

Accommodation can vary from ultra-luxury suits/stylish tents to budget options/eco-lodges depending on the budget. You can also opt for mid-range options or a combination of all. This is the best way to travel for families with kids as well as for corporate groups.

There are many East Africa tour operators and online websites offering Safari tours in Africa. Important thing is to select a trusted safari tour operator in Africa to avoid any kind of scam. You do have an option of flying safaris for those who can’t sit in the vehicles for long but for us, the whole tour was pretty comfortable and enjoyable. Summer in the Northern Hemisphere coincides with peak travel season in Tanzania.

This “summer”—I put that in quotes because it wasn’t actually summer in Tanzania but rather some of our cooler months—I did my fair share of traveling and exploration because my brother was visiting from the U.S., and I wanted to show him all the best that the country had to offer.

We discovered some beautiful places in Dar es Salaam where I live—you will see many pictures of the Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Amani Beach in this post—but we also took a 3-week road trip that took us through 16 of Tanzania’s regions (more than half the regions in the country).

Now that was really something!

Of course, I took lots of pictures and shared many of those pictures on Instagram over the past few months.

Today, I’d like to share the best of those with you.

No. 40: A Cheetah Outside the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

A few minutes after exiting the Serengeti National Park on our way to Bunda, we came upon this cheetah that seemed to be tracking something, so we stopped and watched.

As I was walking along Kutani beach, about 25 km south of downtown Dar es Salaam, I came across this set-up that piqued my curiosity. Finally, I was setting eyes on Ras Kutani, an upmarket “camp” by the Selous Safari Company, which I had heard lots about.

This friendly waiter seemed ready to receive the camp’s guest for evening drinks by the ocean. Aye aye aye, another mental note made: I need to visit Ras Kutani one day soon. (I hope it doesn’t take me as long as it did to get to Amani Beach…see no. 30 on this list to understand what I mean by that.)

No. 35: Wildebeest in the Ngorongoro Crater

I saw loads and loads of wildebeest in the Ngorongoro Crater this time, more than I remember seeing the last time I was there.

Wildebeest are affectionately called “zero brain” by the guides of the Ngorongoro/Serengeti ecosystem because of their super-short memories and attention spans.

No. 30: Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Amani Beach

For 5 years, I’ve had a mental note to go check out the beaches further afield on Dar es Salaam’s south beach (Kigamboni). I finally made my way to Protea Hotel Dar es Salaam Amani Beach a few weekends ago. What made me wait so long?!

No. 29: Wild Fruit at the Supermarket

Where I am from, we call these amatuntuna or entuntuna. In English they are known as Cape gooseberries, golden berries, or physalis.

I remember plucking these straight from a vine outside my grandmother’s home when I was a child and the delight of finding a perfectly ripe one is a pleasure common to many children in East African rural areas.

Did your heart skip a beat when you saw this picture? If so, what are these called where you are from? (I am totally delighted when I come across them in a supermarket aisle.)

No. 26: The University of Dodoma

On my recent trip to Tanzania’s capital, Dodoma, I had the pleasure of visiting the University of Dodoma (UDOM). UDOM is a beautiful grand facility that is still under construction, though classes have been going on there for the last 10 years.

When completed, the University of Dodoma will be able to handle a student body of 50,000, about triple the size of the student body at the University of Dar es Salaam in 2007, when the University of Dodoma first opened. What a great addition to Tanzania’s tertiary institution capacity!

Nos. 24 – 22: Sunsets & More Sunsets

After a day spent driving through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, seeing Olduvai/Oldupai Gorge for the first time, driving through the Serengeti National Park with awesome animal sightings at Seronera, it was time for the day to end.

The sun put on a show for us just as we were leaving the Serengeti National Park, and in this light we saw some of the best game viewing of the day: a cheetah by the road side (no. 40 on this list), lions hiding in the brush, a herd of buffalo blocking the road so we were not sure how we would get to our hotel for the night.

It was stunning!

I was looking through old pictures when I came across this one of Bongoyo Island. Bongoyo Island is one of the four islands of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve System and is the most frequently visited of the four. Bongoyo is located only 2.5 km north of Dar es Salaam and is an easy short boat ride away.

No. 16: Dining at Rhapsody’s in Dar es Salaam

Whenever I dine at Rhapsody’s in Dar es Salaam, this is how I begin my meal:

No. 15: Balili Mountain Resort, Bunda, Tanzania

In the small town of Bunda, about a 20-minute drive from the Ndabaka gate of the Serengeti, lies a mountain called Balili. At the very top of the mountain, after a drive you are certain will kill you (but won’t), lies Balili Mountain Resort (BMR). On top of offering STUNNING views, BMR also has great hospitality.

Every night that my travel companions and I stayed there, the staff built us a bonfire and the manager and his assistant regaled us with great campfire stories.

I had passed by Balili Mountain Resort several years ago on a tour organized by Mwanza– and Mara Tourism, and I promised myself I’d go back one day. Staying there was every bit as enchanting and charming as I expected it would be.

No. 9: A Charming B&B in Bukoba, Tanzania

It is so strange to go “home” and not stay with family. Well, the last time I was in Bukoba I had little choice: my parents’ home was under renovation, my aunt and uncle were out of town so a guesthouse was the easiest solution.

This little cozy guest house, Balamaga Bed & Breakfast, on Kashura Hill in Bukoba DID THE TRICK!

Super cosy, amazing gardens, attentive staff, great views of Lake Victoria…truth be told, it made my stay in Bukoba one of the most relaxing I have ever experienced.

During my last trip in the wild, I learned that lions go on honeymoon. Yep, I didn’t believe it at first but, apparently, when lions mate, a couple goes off on their own for about a week and mate about 20 to 40 times a day. Want more gory details?

During copulation (sex), the lioness will growl viciously while the male bites her at the neck! By doing this he forces her to submit and to block her from lashing out at him when he extracts.

A lion’s penis is barbed with ‘small hooks’ that will cause a lot of pain for the female upon extraction. Apparently this helps to induce ovulation. T.M.I.!

All I can say is that this couple looks like quite the happy pair! 😁

No. 1: The Queen of the Jungle

As we drove through the Serengeti, on our way to Seronera where we would pick up our guide, we came across this lioness sitting on a granite outcrop (known as a kopje). She seemed to be intently focused on something off in the distance.

We wondered: what was she doing all alone?

Then…we circled the outcrop and found 8 other lionesses hidden in the crevices of the kopje.

It looked like a setup.

As we drove on and came across herds of antelope just about where the lioness’s line of sight was, we realized…it probably was.

Poor, poor antelopes! 😌

9 DAYS WILDLIFE SAFARI AND MOUNT MERU CLIMB 9 DAYS WILDLIFE SAFARI AND MOUNT MERU CLIMB in Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater are the most famous national parks and conservation areas in Tanzania. All of our safaris use well-maintained Toyota Land Cruisers with roof hatches for unobstructed and up-close game-viewing. Our safari itineraries include all park fees, an English speaking driver/guide, meals and lodge accommodations. The cost is $2400 per person, price per person varies depending on group sizes. DAY 1: WELCOME IN ARUSHA TANZANIA. Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport anytime and transfer to Arusha Safari Lodge. The rest of the day is free to relax and recover from your flight, laze by the pool or explore the town. DAY 2: SAFARI IN LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK. Today we drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a full day of game drives. This is one of Tanzania's smaller parks but still offers a rewarding and diverse safari experience. The lakeshore at Manyara teems with bird life, and while you are looking for the birds, you might spot one of the elusive tree-climbing lions. There are a surprising number of other large mammals and the striking cliffs on the Rift escarpment form a dramatic backdrop. In the late afternoon, we make a short journey from the park to our special tented camp. (Nsya Tented Camp FB) DAY 2: NGORONGORO VIA OLDUVAI GORGE TO SERENGETI. We head towards the Serengeti National Park. En route, there is an opportunity to visit Olduvai Gorge. It is within this steep-sided ravine that Louis and Mary Leakey made some of the world's most important archaeological discoveries in the 1950s. Here is a small museum we are able to see evidence of our ancestors that have been dated back 2.5 million years. After lunch, we drive into the Serengeti itself and the rest of the afternoon is spent game viewing in the vast plains that are broken only by stands of acacia trees and the occasional kopje. In December, January and February we will normally meet the migration with large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle. There are always plenty of resident animals, such as giraffe, buffalo, and elephant, and many large predators such as lion, cheetah, and leopard. We return to our special tented camp for the night. (Ikoma Bush Tented Camp FB) DAY 3: A FULL DAY GAME VIEW IN THE SERENGETI. We have another full day in this wonderful park, rising early to make the most of our time. Our guides will choose the best spotting locations for the time of year; we can spend time at the Hippo pool watching these majestic animals laze about in the cool water happily living alongside the crocodiles, watch a big pride of lions, be in the middle of the migration, sometimes surrounded by wildebeest, sometimes by zebras, which travel with the wildebeest. We journey from the wide open plains to the kopjes: these volcanic rocky outcrops provide protection and shelter for a wide variety of animals and from the top, we can look out across the vast grasslands of the Serengeti. This diverse and interesting landscape will provide us with the ultimate in game viewing, we will hopefully see all of the plain games; elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions and if you are lucky the elusive leopard and cheetah, as well as huge amounts of interesting birdlife, from the elegant secretary birds to the flightless ostrich. We return to our special tented camp for the night. (Ikoma Bush Tented Camp FB) DAY 4: SAFARI TO NGORONGORO CRATER. We start the day with an early morning game drive before heading to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Ngorongoro is a special place in that it is a Conservation Area, not a National Park; this means that the whole area is managed for both the animals and the local Masai people who graze their cattle alongside the indigenous wildlife. During the drive in Ngorongoro, we have a chance to glimpse something of the Masai way of life. After stopping at the entrance gate, where there is a chance to learn more about this fascinating volcanic landscape, we will drive around the rim of the Crater itself, and from here we can look down and see the herd of wildebeest or buffalos. Finally, we descend into the crater. The crater walls provide a natural sanctuary for the animals, which means there is plenty to see: lions, elephants, buffalo, rhino and leopard (if you are lucky). The only animal you won't see in here is a giraffe, whose long legs are unable to cope with the steeps sides of the crater. In the late afternoon, we travel just outside of Ngorongoro Conservation Area to our special tented camp. DAY 5: NGORONGORO CRATER TO ARUSHA. After breakfast, we depart the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and head back to your hotel in Arusha. DAY 6: MIRIAKAMBA HUT (2,514 M). We start from Momella Gate (1,500 m) in the late morning. The track soon passes some open grassland, with a good chance of seeing buffaloes and warthogs, and then continues as a steady climb through montane forest. We take lunch at, or near, the Fig Tree Arch, which is big enough to drive a car through! After lunch, the route continues through less dense forest, where there is an abundance of birds and monkeys. The black and white colobus monkeys are particularly fascinating to watch. By mid-afternoon, there are the first closer views of the towering cliffs and the Ash Cone. We reach Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m), situated in an idyllic grassy glade, in time to enjoy the last of the afternoon sun and beautiful views over the surrounding plains towards Kilimanjaro. DAY 7: SADDLE HUT (3,570 M). The walk from Miriakamba Hut to the saddle below Little Meru is a short day but a steep and sustained climb all the way. We walk through the attractive, open, and lush montane forest to reach the halfway point of Elephant Ridge. This has excellent views of the summit ridge and across most of the crater floor. Whilst resting, you might spot elephants or other animals from here. The path continues uphill through giant heather and other moorland vegetation to reach Saddle Hut (3,570 m), where lunch is waiting for us. The afternoon is free to rest and enjoy the views. The more energetic can make the short climb to the nearby summit of Little Meru (3,820 m) for superb views just before sunset. DAY 8: MIRIAKAMBA HUT (2,514 M). An early start at around 2 a.m. to climb steeply to Rhino Point (3,800 m), and then continue along an undulating ridge of ash and rock to reach Cobra Point (4,350 m) around sunrise. The views are stunning: the cliffs of the Crater rim, the Ash Cone rising from the Crater floor, Kilimanjaro floating on the morning clouds, and west towards the Rift Valley if the weather is clear. The summit of Socialist Peak (4,566 m) is an hour more on a superb but often steep path. The route back to Rhino Point in the sharp morning light on a narrow ridge between the sloping outer wall of the crater and the sheer cliffs of the inner wall is one of the most dramatic and exhilarating walks in Africa. We rest and have brunch at Saddle Hut before continuing the descent to Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m). Note: The ridge between the summit and Rhino Point is not suitable for those suffering from vertigo. In icy conditions or in strong winds, it may be impossible for anyone to progress beyond Rhino Point. DAY 9: MIRIAKAMBA HUT TO MOMELLA GATE GATE (1,500 M). We take the direct route down towards Momella through open grassland and mixed forest, with good chances of seeing wildlife. This trail has excellent views back towards the crater and over the plains of the National Park. We should reach Momella Gate by late morning. arrange a private transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) after the safari. Day 5: Nairobi – Arusha

Day 6: Arusha – Lake Manyara

Pick up from Arusha and transfer to Lake Manyara national park. We arrive in time for lunch at the lodge and after lunch do we head into the Lake Manyara National Park for an afternoon game drive. This national park is one of Tanzania’s most dramatically located wildlife areas, consisting of a massive but shallow soda lake (covering two-thirds of the park), located at the foot of the Great Rift Valley’s western escarpment. The park’s varied habitat attracts a wide variety of animals, including one of Africa’s largest concentrations of elephants, Lake Manyara’s unique tree-climbing lions, as well as large flocks of flamingos attracted by the algae in the lake.

Day 7: Lake Manyara – Serengeti

After breakfast we head towards the Serengeti National Park, via the beautiful high lying farmland of Karatu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Leaving the highlands behind, we descend into the heart of wild Africa – the Serengeti National Park – with its endless plains, rolling into the distance as far as the eye can see. We head to the central park area, known as the Seronera area, one of the richest wildlife habitats in the park, featuring the Seronera River, which provides a valuable water source to this area and therefore attracts wildlife well representative of most of the Serengeti’s species. We arrive in time for lunch and enjoy an afternoon game drive in the Serengeti national park.

Day 8: Serengeti – Full day Game Drive

Spend this day exploring the endless plains or one of only a few fortunate people to glide in a Hot Air Balloon over the Serengeti Plains (available at supplementary cost by pre-arrangement). Floating silently above the awakening bush, while spotting wildlife and enjoying the amazing scenery of Africa, across rivers and over numerous small villages.

Day 9: Serengeti – Ngorongoro

After breakfast at the lodge do we depart to Ngorongoro Conservation area. We will stopover at Olduvai Gorge, boasting with a history dating back to the dawn of time. It was here, that the anthropologists Drs. Lois and Mary Leakey discovered the skulls of ‘Nutcracker Man’ and ‘Handy Man’, both very significant links in the chain of human evolution.

We arrive in time for lunch at the camp and after lunch we spend the afternoon hunting for the game. Drive back to the camp for dinner and overnight. Supported by a year round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro National Park supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park, is it’s dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs and the ever-elusive leopard, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot. . We will visit Lake Magadi, a large but shallow alkaline lake in the southwestern corner, which is one of the main features of the crater. A large number of flamingos, hippos and other water birds can usually been seen here. Day 01:Arusha- Lake Manyara After breakfast at the hote drive to Lake Manyara Lake Manyara covers two thirds of the park. Day 1: Arrive in Arusha: Arrival at Kilimanjaro air port, you will welcomed by our mountain guide who will usher you into a waiting vehicle and transfer you to Arusha tourist Inn in Arusha . Our tour coordinator will have a short climb briefing session with you at the Hotel and leave you to relax at Hotel (bb) booked. We will gather in the evening for a pre-climb briefing and an equipment check.

Day 2: Machame Gate to Machame Hut (Full Board) The climb starts from machame gate (1830m), we walk through the lush lower slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Slowly gaining altitude while enjoying the diverse flora and fauna of the rain forest, you will arrive to the first Machame Hut, situated at 3000m above sea level If is a clear day we may get our first closer look at the glaciated dome of Kibo if the evening clouds permit. Machame Gate to Machame Hut (3,000 m): 6-7 hours walking.

Day 4: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (Full Board) A shorter day climbing up a steep ridge to reach a small semicircular cliff known as Picnic site, and continue up a gentler ascent through the lower alpine moorland, which is known for beautiful wild alpine flowers. The most spectacular views of Kibo peak can be seen from Shira Camp. Machame Hut to Shira Camp (3,840m); 4-6 hours walking.

Day 4: Shira Camp to Barranco Valley (Full Board) Today we walk on a gentle ascent and panoramic views. We traverse the southwest side of Kilimanjaro, passing underneath the Lava Tower and the final section of the Western Breach and after hot lunch the bottom of the Lava Tower (4,600 m.) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco valley (3,900 m.). Shira Camp to Barranco valley (3,900 m.): 5-7 hours walking.

Day 5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (Full Board) A steep climb up the eastern wall leads us just below the Heim Glacier, where we may have some spectacular views of Kilimanjaro. We then take a steep exit up the Great Barranco Wall, which divides us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo, the trail continues down into the alpine desert of the Karanga Valley. After a short break for a hot lunch we take a steep climb out of Karanga, and an easy path on compacted scree with wide views through this empty and dry landscape up to Barafu Camp.  The two peaks Kibo and Mawenzi can been seen from Barafu Camp. After a hot lunch at the Camp, The remainder of the day is spent resting as we prepare for the final ascent before an early night summit walk. Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (4,600 m): 7-9 hours walking.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp (Full Board) Wake up before midnight in the cover of darkness. We begin a steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to rim of the main crater, Stella Point, at 5,735m. We will rest there for few minutes to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling good can continue slowly to make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to main peak (5,895 m), which is the highest point in Africa. After a few minutes to appreciate your accomplishment we descend to Barafu is amazingly fast, and we stop at Barafu Camp for some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach Mweka Camp. Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp (3100 m): 13-15 hours walking.

Day 7: Descent – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Arusha (Full Board) A gentle walk takes us down through the rainforest to Mweka gate successful climbers will receive their summit certificates. After lunch we drive back to Arusha and overnight at Arusha Tourist Inn Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate: 3-5 hours walking.

Day 8: Day Trip to Ngorongoro Crater

Morning pickup at your hotel by our guide and drive to Ngorongoro Crater with packed lunch boxes. On arrival descend inside the crater for games drives and have picnic lunch. Continue with afternoon until 1600hrs and drive back to Arusha Town. On arrival you are dropped at your Hotel.

Ngorongoro crater is just one part of a larger area of interrelated ecosystems consisting of the crater highlands (to which the Ngorongoro Crater belongs) together with larger stretches of plains bush and woodland. Ngorongoro conservation area covers an area of about 8300 sq km. near its centre is the olduvai Gorge where many fossils have been earthed. Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s best known wildlife – viewing areas. The crater is about 20kms wide and it is one of the largest calderas in the world. Within its walls is a variety of animals and vegetation, including grasslands, swamps, forests, salt pans, a fresh water lake and rich wildlife. The wildlife found includes lions, elephants, buffalos, wildebeests, Thomson’s gazelles, zebra’s reedbucks.

Day 9: Departure day: After saying bye to our team in operation then you need a Private departure transfer which is included from Arusha to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your flight ,unless you have an option to have Safari or any other option we will discuss.
