Letters to Damian
This lovely story was from a request by @arithese. They asked: I really want to see a story where the batfam realises just how bad Damian's childhood was, and realising that his behaviour is because of this trauma. Bonus points for hugs, cuddles and emotional Damian.
This isn't quite exactly like it, but it's pretty close! Enjoy, everyone!

"Hey, Batman?"
Bruce looked towards Tim while dodging the sloppy punch from one of the gunned goons attempting to stop their break-in.
Tim was hunched over a computer, old and out of date, but still functioning. The light from the screen cast shadows over his cowled face in a menacing manner.
"Report, Red Robin," he growled, finally knocking out the last of the guards.
"There's a lot of stuff on here. We don't have time to sort the important information from the junk before the cops get here though." Tim pauses and looked at Bruce. "I'm going to download all of it and sort through it back home. I can have the information you want tomorrow night."
Bruce grunted. That worked. It wasn't like he could use the information tonight anyway.
"Not any sooner, Red Robin?" Damian asked - mocked. "Why the delay?"
"There wouldn't be one if someone hadn't tripped the alarm when we came in," Tim sniped.
Damian growled, low and in the back of his throat. Bruce grabbed the back of his neck before he could make a leap for Tim.
"We need to go. Tim, get to work on that. Damian, with me."
Damian stiffened but listened without complaint. A sign of how far he'd come since he'd started working as Robin with Bruce. He didn't even try to launch himself at Tim.
Bruce didn't really understand his son, but he knew enough to know that his improvement in behavior couldn't be bad in any way. Bruce was⌠proud of Damian. He was proud of how far his son had come, both while working with him and working with Dick. The difference between the angry little boy he's first met and this calm (but still occasionally angry) boy was night and day.
He just hoped it would last.
***
In the morning (after Damian was gone with Dick for the day) Bruce sipped his coffee slowly, relaxing and enjoying the silence of the day. All he had to do today was look through the files Tim had e-mailed him at 6 am this morning (a whole 14 hours early).
Bruce couldn't find it in himself to be upset. Especially when he read the caption on top of the e-mail.
There are files with Damian's name on them! They're starting from when he's like three! Enjoy them. ;)
Tim, at least, seemed to be over his hatred of Damian. Especially if he was willing to give videos of Damian's childhood willingly and with smiles. Or it could be that he just wanted to torment Damian. That was a very likely possibility as well. One Bruce couldn't rule out.
Nevertheless, they were right there in the email. In fact, there seemed to be more of those than actual files for the case. Bruce was almost tempted to watch them first. He didn't simply because he wouldn't have to take a break at all in between watching them if he worked the case first.
Lucky for him it was fast and relatively easy detective work. Bruce emailed everything he'd decoded back to Tim for reference tonight when they put the information to use tracking down some of the assassins hidden in the city. Now onto the videos.
Bruce double-clicked the file and waited while it loaded. When it began to play he felt his stomach drop. There was Damian, about three years old and tiny. He was in a large room holding a tiny sword, more of a knife, really. And surrounding him were bodies. Over ten, torn to shreds. From the blood-stained knife he was holding, no doubt.
"May I go back to Ravi now?" the tiny Damian asked in Arabic. The wasn't even a lisp that young children commonly had while talking. Just perfect, dull speech. No words could even describe Bruce's horror.
And just who was this Ravi?
"No," someone said from behind the camera in French. "You know the rules."
Damian scowled. Bruce almost wanted to laugh. It was the same way his son still scowled now. His forehead wrinkled and his nose crinkled. It wasn't a good thing, how much he wanted to laugh.
"May I go back to Ravi now?" the Damian on screen asked, this time in French. Perfect, fluent French. Bruce felt his heart break a little.
"Kill the one still alive," the voice behind the camera demanded.
Damian looked around the room. Bruce saw the person trying to craw alway first, covering a deep gash on their neck as if that will keep them from bleeding out. It won't. They'll die no matter what.
"Will she die if I don't?" Damian asked, looking directly at the camera for the first time, eyes wide and curious the way a child should be at the zoo, or perhaps seeing a funny-looking bug for the first time.
"Yes."
"Do I have to?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"It is what is commanded of you. Now listen."
Damian didn't. He simply stared at the woman.
"Now, boy!" the voice snapped.
Damian still didn't move. There was a shuffling noise and someone came into view. Bruce didn't recognize them, so it was probably just a nameless assassin who'd been assigned Damian's training at this age.
"Someday you will do as you're told," the assassin growled, raising a sword of their own and slicing the woman's head off. The assassin turned around and sliced a long cut on Damian's arm. It wasn't deep but it did begin to bleed quite a bit.
Damian bit his lip and closed his eyes. He didn't cry and he didn't flinch.
Bruce knew that scar. He'd seen that scar.
Numbly, Bruce clicked on the next video.
Damian looked about the same age. In a different room, this time void of bodies. Damian wasn't holding a weapon of any sort. He merely stood there, hands clasped loosely in front of him.
What horrors could this video contain?
"Name." a voice commanded, the same voice from last time, this time speaking Russian.
"Damian al Ghul," Damian said blankly, also in Russian.
"Age."
"Three years, eight months, 12 days, 16 hours and twenty-four minutes."
"Primary caretaker."
"Ravi."
"Your training is completed now, Damian. You will be sent to America to meet with your next teacher. Understood?"
"Yes. Understood."
The video ended there. What had been that one's purpose? Perhaps to update Talia of Damian's place in his training. Neither of them had had much information. Mainly it was just clips of what have must once been longer videos. What had happened to the rest? And who was Ravi? He still hadn't had that one answered.
Bruce clicked on the next one.
More of the same. Damian was slightly older. Harsh lessons under even more harsh commanders. Over and over in all the videos, it was the same. Bruce watched his son go from a tiny child who only did what he was told so he could go back to the 'Ravi' person to a boy who killed with glee and never asked for anyone.
It was⌠horrifying.
This was Bruce's son. The one he could have saved - loved - years ago if he'd simply known he'd existed.
Bruce slammed the laptop shut with more force than needed and rubbed his forehead. It was the only thing he could do to keep from killing someone, possibly Talia, with how he was feeling, rules be damned.
God, he hadn't even watched all of them.
***
Hours later and Bruce still wasn't over it. He didn't think he would ever be, really. Never. Not when seeing Damian made him think of it all over again. Not when knowing where almost all of Damian's scars come from.
He was a terrible father.
***
He went back and watched the three videos left. Part of him felt guilty for it. This was Damian's life. What was more, those were parts of Damian's life his son hadn't shared, hadn't wanted to share.
That wasn't enough to stop Bruce's burning desire to know everything about it.
The next video was labeled as being Damian's eighth birthday. At least, Bruce thought, he knew what to expect in this one. He knew that this was the day Damian first met Talia, in his memory at least. This was the first time they dueled for Damian's right to meet Bruce.
The duel, for all intents and purposes, wasn't that intense. It was over rather quickly and there was a surprising lack of blood and injuries that would scar.
Bruce wondered how terrible it was that he thought his child sword fighting for and still getting cut wasn't that bad as long as he wasn't injured too terribly.
The next one was from Damian's ninth birthday. It was more of the same, except Damian was a tad more vicious. More⌠angry. Closer to how he'd been when Bruce first met him. It almost made Bruce nostalgic.
The video from his tenth birthday was the most violent. It ended with the most injuries. Damian truly fought as if fighting for his life. And in the end, he won. He won and only a few days later he met his father.
And Bruce⌠God, Bruce must have been hard for him. Bruce hadn't asked Damian to do anything. To fight for his life or position. To fight to even eat a meal. Bruce had loved him and treated him like a child at first. Damian hadn't even known what being a child was at that point.
And then more had happened and Bruce had treated him like the enemy.
What had Bruce been thinking?
Bruce couldn't believe he was thinking this, by he was glad he'd 'died' for a while. Without it, Damian probably wouldn't have improved. Damian probably would have just ended up as another assassin Bruce had to stop.
***
That night Bruce wrote a letter. Filled with everything he wanted to tell Damian - wanted to say - but couldn't find a way to bring up, a way to use the right words. He filled it with everything he'd ever wanted to tell Damian. Everything he loved about him and everything Damian did or had ever done that had made him proud.
It wasn't hard, really. Damian made him proud every day. Even if Bruce never said it.
Then⌠well then⌠Damian died.
***
Bruce wrote more letters, added them to his growing collection, because Damian would read them, damn it. Damian would be back again. Damian wouldn't stay dead⌠he couldn't! Bruce would fix it and he would get his son back. He had to.
He did things he wasn't proud of. He brought Jason back to Ethiopia. Tim had to stop him from going too far. Dick⌠Dick went under a deep cover mission and left everyone but Bruce thinking he was dead. That was probably Bruce's fault though. Bruce had pretty much been responsible for Damian's death, indirectly as it was.
But then⌠Damian was back and in Bruce's arms. With superpowers, albeit, but he was back. He was alive and loved.
***
Bruce was fairly sure Damian was angry at him. After finding out about Dick he hadn't spoken to anyone for days, Bruce most of all. Bruce continued writing letters.
And one day he just⌠left them at Damian's door.
It was foolish, wishful thinking. Foolish to wish that Damian would read them. To think that it would change anything. Bruce wasn't a fool.
So the next morning when Damian came down for breakfast and sat down next to Bruce at the table, Bruce almost did a double-take. Had Damian-
No, he couldn't have, because he still wasn't looking at Bruce.
***
When Dick finally came back, Damian threw his arms around him and left Dick spin him around. They were both laughing. It was the first time Bruce had seen him so carefree.
Bruce joined them, wrapping Dick and Damian in a tight bear hug. Without prompting Tim joined in. Jason stood a few feet away, shuffling awkwardly. He still let Bruce draw him into the hug. Cass appeared in the middle of the pile somehow. Bruce wasn't going to question it, not when all his children were safe and happy.
No one was in danger or dying. No one was suffering from any wounds other than a few bruises. Damian was here and he was okay. Everyone was okay.
Everyone would be okay from here on out. Bruce would make sure of that.

Ward Eller:Â A man who has paid it forward...
Ward Eller's daughter Karen Worley, and wife Kate, at the November 2017 Tribute to Ward Eller which was held at the VFW Hall in North Wilkesboro.
By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
On the cover of the ChickenFest 2018 program there is a picture of Ward Eller.
The caption under the photograph reads: "Ward Eller is an icon of Wilkes County Music. With his trademark cowboy hat and red Fender Stratocaster guitar, Eller took the stage at the VFW Hall in North Wilkesboro every Saturday evening for nearly 60 years. He fronts a band--a revolving group of topnotch musicians--which performs for the crowd of dancers that turn out each week. For the past several years, Eller has also opened up ChickenFest with his VFW band backing him on the Sammy Lankford Stage in the Tyson Pavilion. He was scheduled to perform again this year,  but earlier this week realized that recent pressing health issues would not allow it. We at The Record had already made the decision to put Eller on the cover of this program. For all he's done for us, the VFW with the Honor Guard, and the community, it's an honor to pay this heartfelt tribute to Ward Eller."
Among the many awards and recognitions Eller has received is being inducted into the Blue Ridge Music Hall of Fame, and, a few years ago, he was listed as a "Pioneer of Bluegrass" in the International Bluegrass Music Museum on Owensboro, Kentucky. It was shortly after this award that The Record's editor, Jerry Lankford, put together an exhibit of records, music magazine articles, photographs and Ward Eller's first Gibson acoustic guitar in the offices of The Record. The display was up for several months and drew steady traffic during its run. When the exhibit was taken down, Ward Eller gave us a framed photograph from the display which we proudly display to this day.
Back in November of 2017, local musician Mark Gentry organized an event at the VFW Post 1142 Post to do just that, honor and pay tribute to Ward Eller. referring to Eller as a mentor, hero, and friend, Mark Gentry said, "His dedication to our country, service to our veteran's, and longevity as a musician speaks for itself. Ward gives so freely of himself and we are honored to come together to show our appreciation for him." Gentry arranged an amazing array of musicians for the Ward Eller tribute that evening, including David Johnson and Eric Ellis, both Blue Ridge Music hall of Fame members.  The Ward Eller tribute drew the biggest crowd to the VFW in many years.
And then there was ChickenFest. We got a little rain, but who didn't get a little rain this past weekend. But we had Ward and his wife, Kate Eller, and that was sunshine enough for us all. While he couldn't play this year, Ward Eller came to ChickenFest on Friday and Saturday to support his fellow musicians, especially Mike Palmer and the crew he put together to play in Ward's opening slot on Friday evening. Â
Folks literally stood in line to greet and to wish Ward Eller well, and, as I walked him to his car Friday night, he remarked how humbled and thankful he was at the outpouring of support and prayers he had received from friends and strangers alike. I told Ward that he shouldn't be at all surprised, because, after all, I was pretty sure he was the person they coined the expression about which goes like, "You have paid forward..."
A few years ago, I remarked to Ward's daughter, Karen Worley, that I only had one complaint about her daddy--that I hadn't known him my entire life.
It is still true, so very true. What a blessing this wonderful man has been to so many.
 Why are holidays important?
By LAURA WELBORN
Quick quiz:Â if given the choice of a vacation or a small money bonus, which would you take?Â
My choice is the vacation and here is why: it is a change!Â
Research shows how important change is to your everyday happiness. Smart employers recognize this and build vacation days into most employment packages. You come back more productive and happier even if the vacation is exhausting or doesnât turn out perfect. It is about your brain recognizing a change in environment and âreprogrammingâ from tired negative thoughts to positive ones.
I recently decided to visit a friend who lives in Pine Knoll Shores. I had been trying to find a good time to go and kept putting it off for one reason or another. Finally, I just went. I knew I needed a change-I was taking my life far too personally and getting far too annoyed over little things. This mini vacation was just what I needed to reroute my brain into more positive thoughts and actions. Maybe that is why we have holidays, to encourage us to do something different and help us get unstuck from whatever negative slump we are in.
I have been reading the book âUpward Spiralâ by Alex Korb. In it, he discusses the neuroscience to reverse the course of depression one small change at a time. The whole book is great, but I was particularly taken with several thoughts:
1.     Change your environment: Randomly change something in your environment - anything you donât like. This could be changing a picture you donât particularly like, buying new clothes, starting a new hobby or taking a mini vacation. Part of the problem when you are in a slump is that no matter where you go you take your tendencies with you. But changing yourself is often easiest when you change your environment first.
2.     Make your bed. Ever watch the commencement address where the marine says to be successful you need to make your bed when you get up? This simple act gives you success first thing in the morning and your brain feels it. Once you start being productive, dopamine is released in the brain and suddenly you have more energy and motivation to do the things you really need to do.Â
3.     Laugh. Ever think about how you remember the good times and laugh at the things that went wrong on vacation even when at the time you could not laugh? This helps our brain produce serotonin and we start to feel better. When we can laugh at ourselves and remember details we shared with family it starts us on a positive path. It can be the memory of a holiday family gathering when we felt close to each other. Relive those memories in detail and you will get a serotonin surge which will put you on a positive path.Â
So, why holidays are important? It is about creating good memories by just getting outside your routine and changing your environment. Doing one small thing each day that helps start the day with an accomplishment. And, if that one small thing goes a little south, laugh, just laugh.Â
  Donât mess with my Pimento
By CARL WHITE
Life in the Carolinas
Not so long ago I was traveling from Charlotte to Forest City, N.C. On my way I called a friend, Allen Langley. He asked what I was up to and I told him I would soon be passing through Shelby.
He said, "Great, stop by and Iâll ride with you."
I did, and as we drove along he told me about the many things he and his family enjoy doing in the area. He was very excited about eating at The Fountain at Smith's Drugs. They went into business in 1939, and are still the go to meeting place in Forest  City.
After we found our table, Wendy Bennett stopped at our table with her daughters and friends. She told me that she started working at The Fountain when she was sixteen and continued there for three years before becoming a nurse. She now champions the call as the mother of three. With a smile, she said Smith's Drugs is full of great memories and is a favorite for her family.
Our waitress was Susan Donnahoe, a quick witted lady of Irish descent. I asked what the most ordered item was. Susan said that would be the grilled homemade Pimento Cheese Sandwich. So that order went in, but before she left the table, I asked if the maker of the pimento cheese was in.
"Let me check," she said.
The manager, Susan Stewart, came to the table. She is also the recipe developer and maker of The Fountain's pimento cheese. Â While she was not willing to share the secret ingredients, she did say they make at least 45 pounds of the amazing spread every week.
I spoke with other diners who raved about this simple yet tasty comfort food that regulars canât seem to get enough of. Pimento cheese lovers can get upset with you if you mess with their favorite.
Case in point: some years ago amidst much controversy the traditionally served pimento cheese recipe changed at Augusta National, and is still being talked about today. In an article published by ESPN, the magazine's senior writer Wright Thompson reported that a fan, Paul Jones, said, âIâm fine with adding the female members, and I am tolerating the belly-putters, but changing the pimento cheese recipe is taking change too damn far.â
As it turns out our taste for cheese in no small matter. According to the USDA, Americans have increased their average consumption of cheese from 7.7 pounds in 1950 to 36 pounds in 1915. It was a good lunch and a great visit at Smithâs Drugs.
Allen and I then drove to the town of Rutherfordton to visit KidSenses Childrenâs INTERACTIVE Museum, located on Main Street. This is a great place with over twenty interactive exhibits designed to stimulate the imagination of young ones. Allen shared memories of taking his daughter to KidSenses for her birthday party when it first opened in 2004.
I had the opportunity to meet the town manager. Doug Barrick shared some very interesting local history, including the fact that Christopher Bechtler minted Americaâs first one-dollar gold coin here in 1832. This was almost 17 years before the U.S. minted their own. The Bechtler Mint minted more than two million dollars in gold prior to its closure in 1849.
Rutherfordton has a commemorative trail called âThe Gold Mileâ. It starts at the Bechtler House and winds around town, and is marked with replica Bechtler one-dollar coins. As you walk around this historic town there are information plaques with QR codes that point to additional information online. I did not have time to see everything, so I will need to return.
While a bit cheesy, it was a great day. I love the traditions of good food, education and a visit with the past.

[su_dropcap style=âflatâ]W[/su_dropcap]INNERâs beginning was different from the start as they were born through a reality program, âWIN: Who Is Nextâ. In the first week of their debut, they won three #1 crowns on music shows with their title track âEmptyâ and swept up all the rookie awards that year.
The public fixed their eyes on the monster rookie that had skills, visuals, and the star quality and WINNER always put out results that met expectations. But a long hiatus followed which was unprecedented for a rookie group.
A sudden piece of news that fans received during the hiatus was not about their comeback but about a member leaving the group. They became 4 members from 5 and they changed the formation of their choreographs and they adjusted the vocalist parts and they had to work hard to fill up the one empty spot. The result of this came in the form of their single album âFATE NUMBER FORâ, which was released on April 4th, 1 year and 2 months after their previous comeback.
The moment the album was released, it recorded first place on iTunes Charts in 21 different countries and was featured in Apple Musicâs âBest of the Weekâ. The fact that the publicâs response to âREALLY REALLYâ and âFOOLâ, which are total opposites of each other, are addicting is just a bonus. WINNER is at their peak.
(check out the next page by clicking on the numbers below this page to read the individual interview)
KANG SEUNGYOON
The response for âREALLY REALLYâ is very hot. Do you feel how popular it is?
Iâve been told by people but I canât really feel it myself. Just like it has always been, we just perform onstage and meet our fans and move according to our schedules.
During WINNERâs hiatus, with Nam Taehyunâs leave, the group became 4 from the original 5. Didnât you feel like your responsibility as the leader was heavier with this comeback?
Of course I felt responsible. But I didnât think things like, âI need to lead WINNER better so we can go to a higher place.â (laughs) I felt like I needed to do things instead of staying still.
I heard that you werenât able to properly rest or travel for leisure during the hiatus.
Yes. When I didnât have plans on making music, I was at home. Home and company. That was it. It was because I didnât want to just rest. Even when I didnât have any songs to work on, I went to the company. I felt more comfortable staying at the company, eating with my composer hyungs, and talking to them.
I heard you made âREALLY REALLYâ and âFOOL very quickly.
Composing for both songs came easy to me. For âREALLY REALLYâ, I finished composing the melody and writing the lyrics while lying in bed in 4 hours. But I couldnât figure out the best melody progression for the bridge part so I asked Mino to help me.
As a member who composed the songs, which member do you want to praise the most?
Jinwoo-hyung. I donât force directions to the rappers. They have always done well with their individual styles and they know how to show off their own colors. But I was really surprised at how much Jinwoo-hyungâs singing improved while recording for this single album. The time it took to record decreased greatly. It took 30 minutes when it usually takes 2 hours.
Jinwoo told me earlier that the songs suited him so well that he was very comfortable with them.
Whenever I make WINNER songs, I compose so that it suits the members. Itâs only possible since Iâve known them for almost 10 years now, ever since we were trainees. This means I probably canât make songs for other singers.
I feel like you received a lot of stress to achieve such good results.
I feel like I donât get stressed much but my body keeps hurting in places. (laughs) I still get migraines.
How do you relieve stress?
These days I reform clothes with Mino as a hobby. I usually relieve stress by going outside and walking under the sunlight. But I need to wear a face mask and a hoodie so people donât recognize me. I wear black clothes to not draw attention to myself at night. (laughs)
How do you reform clothes?
I just fold them and stick them together and sew things together and cut things. Iâm bad at sewing. When I have things I need to sew, I put them aside and when my mother comes to Seoul, I make her do it⌠(laughs) She enjoys it though! Iâm usually really blunt around her so when I ask her to do things like this for me she thinks weâre playing together.
In the end, all the clothes youâre reforming are made by your mother.
No, thatâs not it. I design the clothes and my mother sews the clothes. Designers donât sew clothes themselves. Their assistants do it. (laughs)
Youâre receiving good results after a long hiatus. Is there something you want to challenge yourself in in the future?
I want to hear people say, âThis is what WINNER-like music isâ even when we make music we want to make and not bother with trends. To make that happen, we need to become more known and further develop our careers. I think itâs possible with time. Personally, once WINNER becomes properly stabilized as a group, I want to release a solo album but I want to include all genres of music into that one album. When people think about the music Kang Seungyoon makes, they assume itâs only folk or rock music. I want to break that preconceived notion and put in dance, hip-hop, R&B, and even trot songs into the album. Iâm just sharing my thoughts. (laughs)
SONG MINO
Youâve succeeded in the variety scene. You received your nickname âSong Dumbâ through âNew Journey to the Westâ and youâve become famous enough among the older generation that they ask for your autograph. Was it your wish to appear on a variety show?
Yes, I wanted to. Other than music shows, we werenât able to have complete promotions and as time passed, the image of the group WINNER solidified into being a group that is hard to approach and classy. (laughs) I donât mind that kind of image and vibe but I wanted us to promote more and become more known. In that timing, I received the offer from âNew Journey to the Westâ and I had lots of fun filming it but I didnât expect to be shown like that⌠(laughs)
Youâre honestly worried as a rapper, right?
At first I was worried that my image would cover my music activities. But when I thought about it, what was shown on TV is my true self and itâs separate from the music I make so there is no need to forcefully hide myself. Iâll show myself as I am and I can show my music as it is.
In a separate interview you said that you worked hard to show rapping that overflows with energy without covering the melody. Maybe because of this I feel like your vocalization changed.
My vocalization changed during âShow Me The Moneyâ. Itâs actually a change that all singers and rappers go through. Itâs how we find the voice weâre most comfortable with. When I first started rapping, I made up a voice and rapped in that voice. When I listen to the songs I made when I was in high school, my voice sounds like I swallowed stones. (laughs) Back then, I thought that was cool. But gradually, Iâm finding the voice Iâm comfortable with.
When you promote as WINNER, rapping is a component that makes up the vibe of the song. You must want to work on your own music since you donât rap as much compared to when you promote individually.
Yes. The rapping I do as WINNER is one part of the song so the importance lies in the overall concept. But my rap style is made up of word plays and I pour in a lot of fun elements and enjoy my music so when I get the opportunity to work on my solo music, Iâm going to do whatever I want. I want to go hard in my rapping.
Do you perhaps remember the first rap you made?
I donât remember the lyrics but I remember what happened. The first ever music I made was when I was in my 6th year of elementary school. I went to my friendâs house and wrote my first lyrics and recorded myself on a cassette tape with my friend. I didnât know anything when I was writing those lyrics. I just scribbled something and said, âHey, but letâs still record itâ and I recorded it on a cassette tape. I wonder where that cassette tape is now.
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Out of all the raps youâve made, which one gave you the hardest time?
The song that I had the hardest time making was âShootâ for âInfinite Challenge: Great Legacyâ. The overall concept was already set in place. The larger theme was history and the smaller theme was General Lee Soonshin. And the project was about becoming aware by looking back into the past and looking at the present. It was difficult to express myself within a fixed boundary. Fortunately, the end result turned out well.
Youâve had the name WINNER for 4 years now. Is there a time when you think you have some spare time now?
I donât think weâre at that level yet. But the chemistry between us members is really good. Weâve been living together for a long time now so I think we know pretty much everything about each other. I know what my members are thinking just by looking at their faces. The member who is in the best mood today is⌠Seunghoon-hyung. That hyung has severe mood swings but I think heâs pretty happy today. (laughs)
Is there a specific key point you want listeners to focus on for âREALLY REALLYâ?
Um⌠What a difficult question. (Song Mino mulled over the question for a long time. Lee Seunghoon, who had finished earlier came and suggested, âDidnât you say you worked hard to change your tone? Tell her about that.â) The change in my tone can just be heard. I donât need to specifically tell that to people⌠I just want people to listen to it comfortably. Comfortably. (laughs)
LEE SEUNGHOON
I heard CEO Yang praised you for making the choreography for âFOOLâ in 5 hours.
I was able to make it quickly because I thought about the flow of movements. âFOOLâ didnât need complicated dancing. Itâs a song that is close to the ballad genre so it wasnât necessary to dance powerfully and put in a key point dance. The first thing I thought about was how I could make us look cool.
Iâm curious about your process in making choreographies.
First, I close my eyes while listening to the song and draw a picture in my head. I imagine an overall picture while thinking about the mood of the performance that people would find cool watching us. After I imagine that, I make a large outline of how the members should move. After that, I make the detailed dance movements. âFOOLâ didnât need lots of movements but the formation had to change because we became 4 members from 5.
Youâve started promoting after a long hiatus. I heard you thought a lot about what kind of fanservice you would do for the fans.
The ground-breaking invention of Naver V App is helping many people other than ourselves, I think. I really want to tell Naver that I love them. (laughs) Iâve always liked making and planning ideas and content. Iâve had interest in making videos from when I was young. So I have fun and I like communicating with our fans through V App.
I feel like youâve been overflowing with ideas from when you were on âK-Pop Starâ. I guess youâre not nicknamed âDeputy Lee of YG Planning Teamâ for nothing.
I enjoy producing ideas. When I get told theyâre fun, I get really excited. Usually, other artists go to the YG office building to work out or go to the recording studio on the 3rd floor and they donât really go to where the staff members work. But I always go to those staff membersâ offices. So when they see me on TV, they say that I look unfamiliar and that it feels strange. They say things like, âWhy is our Deputy whoâs always scruffy appearing on TV like thatâ. (laughs)
You have good fashion sense. Youâve collaborated with fashion brands too.
Let me just tell you that good-looking people like Jinwoo-hyung never get interested in fashion. Thatâs because they look good no matter what they wear. (laughs) I enjoyed going around used-goods markets and looking for clothes with my friends. Since I debuted and am earning money, I can buy expensive clothes now, right? I used to not have money so I couldnât buy expensive clothes but I suddenly realised that the ultimate end to fashion was to personally create a style of clothes I like. So later on, when I have the opportunity, I want to create my own clothing brand, like Tyler, the Creator who made âGolf Wangâ.
Youâre a jack-of-all-trades. I was surprised when I saw your poem called âFlower Boatâ that you wrote for your fans.
I just imitated something like a poem. I feel like my fans like it so much because what I feel for my fans can be felt from that poem. Iâm not good at writing and Iâm not talented.
What are you talking about? Your fans say that the lyrics you write are the best parts of the songs. Were you proud when you listened to the completed recordings of the new songs?
Yes, I liked them. Seungyoon is the type to listen to the music he makes a thousand times before the release but I donât listen to our songs often. I say things like, âWhy listen to them already when weâre going to keep listening to them after theyâre released?â (laughs) But I was satisfied. I worked hard to make a rap that middle school girls could imitate easily.
How did you do that?
I made sure my enunciation wasnât hard to imitate and the speed wasnât too fast. And most importantly, I put in many breaks between the beats where you can rest. I imagined how people would sing and rap along. (laughs)
KIM JINWOO
Youâre famous among your fans for being very diligent. What kind of effort did you put in for this single album?
I kept receiving lessons while we recorded. I also learned contemporary dancing and thanks to that I became very confident. I used to sing quietly when we recorded but now I actively try singing this way and that. My singing hasnât changed but my attitude has.
As the group became 4 members, your singing parts increased too. Were you not burdened?
I just recorded the songs comfortably. When Seungyoon makes a song, he thinks about our tones and the rappersâ tendencies. We record many songs and there are times when there are good results and there are times when there are bad results but when Seungyoon is the one who made the song, I never struggle. I didnât put in any extra effort. I donât need to because he makes songs that suit me perfectly.
When were you most excited while recording the songs?
I was just happy the entire time we were recording. I feel like learning how to physically express myself in a given situation through contemporary dancing made me change a lot internally. If I have the time, I want to continue learning contemporary dance.
Fans know that youâre a homebody. Do you still always stay home?
I donât spend my spare time outdoors. I watch TV at home or I lie in bed and play with my phone. I used to play lots of phone games but Iâve stopped that now. Playing so many phone games made me spend too much money. (laughs) I stopped because I realised that if I kept it up, I would go broke. (laughs)
You mustâve watched a lot of TV during the hiatus.
Iâve watched many dramas recently. I especially enjoyed watching âDefendantâ.
Who is your favorite actor?
Kimura Takuya. I love it when people tell me I look like how Kimura Takuya looked like when he was young. (laughs)
Who is your favorite Korean actor?
Jisung-sunbaenim who acted in âDefendantâ. Did you watch that drama? You didnât? You really should. I really love Choi Jinsil-sunbaenim. I didnât know that I would fall in love with another actor besides her. Jisung-sunbaenim acted his character who would never let go of his deep sadness even in a happy situation and⌠Wow⌠SeriouslyâŚ
Youâve acted in a webdrama before, right? I can feel that youâre greedy for acting.
Yes, Iâm always interested in acting. Iâve acted in a couple of webdramas but I think they didnât really suit me. I want to try acting a deep and heavy character instead of a light character. Of course, I am still very lacking.
But youâre the icon of effort. All the other members picked you as the member who improved the most.
Not just me, all of us worked really hard in making this single album. If you ask me what people should focus on when listening to our song, I want to say âall of itâ. There is really no part that didnât require hard work.
Then when is the best timing to listen to âREALLY REALLYâ?
When youâre in a flirting relationship with someone. Or at the beginning of a romantic relationship, when the love is fresh. If I were to compare that feeling to a season, it would be Spring, which is right now.
When do you think Spring will start in your love life? I heard what your ideal type is on the radio. You said that you want to date someone who looks like you, right? A women with big eyes, a slender face, and is 165cm tall. Do these characteristics still hold?
Firstly, I donât mind what kind of hairstyle she has now. But I would like it if she is shorter than me. Other than that, the general descriptions havenât changed. But right now I will concentrate on WINNER promotions. (laughs)

One thing that sets Box of Style apart from the rest is the care that they take with packaging. It truly feels like a treat to unwrap, and itâs exciting to unwrap each piece. In this specific package, this monthâs special extra was actually wrapped outside the box because it was bigger than usual. (More on that later.)
I love it when a box compliments me.
Again, this is what I mean when I say each item is carefully wrapped- I never worry about anything being broken in shipping, and itâs fun to open each little package! You get a bit of that anticipation, ya know? So⌠letâs see what I got!
Each Box of Style is curated by The Zoe Report where Rachel Zoe is Editor-in-Chief. Subscribing to this box is probably the closest thing most of us will ever get to being styled by Rachel Zoe. I love RZ- I have a few of her books and her style is just effortless cool girl.
Each box contains an insert with information about all of the products in addition to fun facts, how-toâs and styling tips. In the Spring 2017 box, Rachel Zoe wanted to focus on highlighting female-founded brands, which I think is amazing. (Who run the world? Girls!)
So, without further ado, check out everything from the box! So many things! And right away, before investigating at all, I see so many high-end brand name products I recognize, which is always exciting. But letâs take a closer look at all of the products, shall we?
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Adornmonde Ivo Earrings ($62): Eeek!!! I love these earrings so much!!! Ear jackets have been my jam for a few years now, ever since Baublebar came into my life. So I was so fired up when I learned these would be in our boxes because we were able to choose whether we wanted gold or silver. I think that itâs so neat that a subscription box like this can personalize boxes a bit. These are just right up my alley- the bar part goes in the front, and you can even just wear those alone if you are so inclined- and the hoop part goes on the back  of the earring.
The day I took this picture, I got a spray tan so I am extra golden and glowy than I normally am. But see how cool those earrings are?! Heart eye emoji.
Butter London Patent Shine 10X Lacquer ($18): Sometimes I forget about Butter London nail polishes since I am so deep in the Julep World but Butter London polishes are GREAT. Iâm normally not into colors like this, but thatâs actually why Iâm glad I got this â I donât have it already! This almost looks like it will be nude on me and thereâs definitely a time and a place for that. Sometimes dark polishes are hard to maintain and when you know youâre not going to have time during the week to touch up your nails, you can go in with a color like this which is much more forgiving than a dark oxblood red.
Symbology Scarf ($50): This is one of the items in the box that I am just slightly confused about. I think itâs because Iâm not fashion-y, so Iâm not into wearing the shorter scarves these days. But you can ask my friends, when I was in college, I was VERY into scarves like these! I would either get them from my momâs vintage collection or find some at thrift stores. I canât tell you how many times I dressed like a hipster mime when I was younger â so many black and white stripe shirts with red neck scarves. I just havenât thought to wear one in well over 10 years! However, this might make me want to bring it back! Lauren Scarves 2.0.
Another idea is to tie a scarf on your handbag! The next color of purse I want is navy and I think this scarf would look so cool tied on a navy purse!
BKR Glass and Silicone Water Bottle ($35): I was SO excited to get this water bottle! I have seen these for years but never purchased one because I didnât want to spend that kind of money on just a water bottle. But now⌠I have one! (And it took approximately 8 seconds for it to get cat hair on it. This is why I canât have nice things.) I am looking forward to drinking more water out of my super pretty bottle! And I already want a bigger one!
Tatcha Polished Gentle Rice Enzyme Powder ($65): I am so excited to get this! A few years ago, I tried to buy the POPSUGAR Must Have Fall Special Edition box andâŚ. it never came. And it had this stuff in it and Jill LOVED IT. (It must be nice to get the box you ordered, huh? Not that I am bitter. ANYWAY. I have this now! Of course, the day I get it, I get a spray tan, so I donât want to use it and scrub off the tan I just got. BUT SOON. I will be using the heck out of this. I hear such good things AND it has amazing reviews on Sephora, so while I am excited to be tan, Iâm excited to use this when Iâm no longer tan.
And Tatcha really knocks it out of the park on a packaging level. It was just such a treat to open, which makes me feel like the product is super luxurious.
Tribe Alive Custom Carryall ($238): This was the big ticket item this month and I am sad to say itâs just not my fave. This is one of those times where Rachel Zoeâs aesthetic and mine just differ a little bit, as I prefer much more structured, classic type bags and this just isnât my jam. But when I first looked at it, I was like, whoa, that looks like the bag I got in my February POPSUGAR Must Have Box, and sure enough, it was the same brand! I actually really like the clutch we got. Again, itâs not my style to carry it like a purse, but I really enjoy it for carrying my makeup brushes in my gym bag.
The brand is really cool- Tribe Alive was founded by a gal named Carly Burson to utilize her passion for fassion as a platform to help alleviate poverty among women around the world. The partnership with Box of Style, created this special exclusive bag for subscribers, employed over 150 Indian artisans in three cities!
At first, I found the price point to be a little high, but then I realized the straps are real leather, which I didnât originally see. It also has an inner zippered pocket like a lot of purses, plus 2 of those little inside side pockets for your cell phone or whatever. Itâs definitely a decent purse! Itâs just not my jam specifically. But I think the story of this brand is so cool and definitely a great addition to the box. I actually have an idea of the person I am going to give this to, and I know she will love it and give it a great home!
Stella Artois Chalice, Brazil -Special Bonus! ($13): Each month, TZR editors will include a little bonus item that doesnât go towards the full value of the box. This bonus was actually really cool and one that Matt really enjoyed! We have a pint glass collection- well, MATT has a pint glass collection. (I only helped by adding a Lubyâs pint glass.) So now I am doing my part by contributing a Stella Artois pint glass! Whatâs really cool about the inclusion of the glass in this box is that the purchase of one chalice, provides five years of clean water for a person in the developing world through the partnership of Stella Artois and Water.org. You can learn more about the campaign at www.BuyALadyADrink.com.

Final Grade: A
Once again, The Zoe Reportâs Box of Style is knocking it out of the park! I am dying over the Adornmonde earrings, Tatcha exfoliator and of course, that BKR water bottle! And I think itâs incredible that you can get almost $500 worth of products in a $100 box. While $100 might seem a little steep, I think the value and the quality of the products that are included in each box makes the cost more than worth it!
