Bontenmaru-hen is an amazing manga!! Anyone whose a fan of the infamous Date Dragon Duo will love this story! Though the manga was published back in 2014-2015, I finally got my hands on it recently and will now do a short review, while keeping it as spoiler-free as possible.

First of all, the artwork is absolutely stunning! Drawn by the amazing Yoshihara Motoki, one of my favorite manga artists! A seinen style manga, the bold lines and heavy shading really emphasize the seriousness of this drama between Katakura Kojuro and Masamune during their early days together. Some dialogue is based on the ‘flashback’ scenes in the SB4 game sprinkled throughout Kojuro’s route. Mainly, how young Bontenmaru’s wild raging needed to be redirected into more productive actions, and it’s up to Kojuro to tame this wild young dragon…by any means necessary, for the sake of the Date clan.

Very intense, even violent at times, and quite touching in others, it shows how these two strong-minded men slowly came to realize, through carefully chosen words and actions, that they could rely on each other, and develop a bond of trust that nothing would ever break. And that only by facing your inner darkness can one truly shine…

This is a powerful story that, by the end, it had me in tears. Even though I have huge limitations in reading Japanese, the way it’s printed has hiragana and katakana letters next to the more challenging kanji words, so it’s somewhat easier to figure out the words and phrases. Honestly, it made reading some of the more dramatic dialogue even more powerful, since I was almost studiously reading it. I highly recommend this manga, especially to you Date clan lovers.

Hi! Thank you so much for your Sengoku Basara Dokugan scanlations! ^_^ I'm a big Sengoku Basara fan and it's really nice to see it finally up for read :) I have a question for you... is there any way you can do scanlations of Sengoku Basara 4 Bontenmaru-hen or Retsuden?

I suppose Botenmaru-hen is a possibility, but considering my current pace I don’t know when I’d get around to it XDDDD Retsuden, less so, I enjoy Yukimura but I enjoy Masamune more, y’know?

Hi! I'm a big Sengoku Basara fan and like a lot your Tumblr :) I want to thank you so much for translating the first chapter of Retsuden manga, more that nobody has scanned it yet and it is really interesting. My question here is if there is any way that you can scan or upload pictures of the Bontenmaru-hen manga, please. I really want to read it but I can't buy it and nobody has it online :(

Nice to know another Basara fan!! Party on!! Haha, it was such a struggle translating Retsuden. I’m very rusty with what little I had learned of Japanese, and I haven’t attempted translating any manga after. Ooh...was it so long ago?

As for Bontenmaru-hen, I bought my copy 6 years ago. So I’m not sure myself how available it is in hard copy. But because of restrictions and copyrights, I personally don’t feel comfortable uploading scans of the manga.

I know you can find snippets and screenshots online, and I have shared a few snaps from my own copy when I first bought it. But I won’t be able to translate pages or upload scans. Thanks for understanding.

Perhaps someone might be selling a hard copy on Ebay sometime. I do know a few sellers who have other manga and art books still available if you’re wanting some Basara books and other merch.
