Bone collection/identification on Reddit is so funny to me. It's chaos. Nothing is real
You take a look inside of r/boneidentification and now bird pelvises are skulls. Someone's found human remains again. No one remembers animals exist outside of North America. Someone else thinks they've found the remains of the newest cryptid (it's just a fish)
"Is this human?!"
So close! It's pork ribs x

hi! my mother found these on the beach and brought them to me, and i was wondering if you could help me identify them? she thinks they might be parts if bird skulls, but i feel like they might be some fish part or another. what do you think?
___
I'm definitely gonna say fish skull with that shape and texture, though I admit I'm not great with anything more specific than that, sorry! at the least I can be pretty dang sure they aren't birds, so you're in the clear there! they look like fantastic finds though, big congrats :D
@boneidentification might have better resources for you in their tags?

Found this rib in the tide. Shorter than ten inches and wider than any of my deer ribs. Ends don't look purposely cut. Any ideas?

Found this guy in the freezer - they're almost completely intact! Just some missing limbs.
I'm not too sure what they are but my guess is either a young r.at or large m.ouse. @boneidentification any ideas on this lil fellow?

I don’t own it yet so I can’t get you a real good look unfortunately, but here’s a few angles + teeth, and it’s 22″ long. I was thinking horse, but it isn’t as slanted down as they normally are? It seems. Bulkier, I guess. Cow maybe?
EDIT: mystery solved, Is Horse™ i just don’t want you to have a random mention but no post too it lol

boosting this, because despite my eternal love for the precious screaming trash cats i still have NO idea wth these things are supposed to be, let alone where they fit on the skeleton.

Hey Osteologists of Tumblr! I’m currently articulating an opossum skeleton and I can’t identify these small, v-shaped bones. Any help would be appreciated. 🙂

I’ve had my first ever experience finding bones in the woods! They were pretty clean (not fleshy) and in a clear pile on the edge of a hiking trail, so I feel like they were left there by a human maybe? Maybe they kept their favorites and left the rest. Anyways, I stuck them in some hydrogen peroxide to soak when I got home and went to look up your bone cleaning post(s) to check how long you recommend soaking for, but now I can’t find it. Can you link me? Also, do you take picture submissions for species ID requests? I think maybe mule deer, as that’s the only thing that size in the area that seems to be around, but I guess if they were left by someone then they might not be.
Sure you can send for bone ID requests, but I'm only really good at skulls. @boneidentification is better! Don't forget to add a scale like a ruler.
There was a how-to-clean-bones on a now-defunct blog called bonecleaning (why do people delete blogs? it's not like you have to maintain them? No shade, it's your right, I'm just confused why people destroy their own work)
Here's a bone cleaning guide from Jake's Bones. The amount of time to soak in peroxide is not really specific, it's based on several factors...until they're done!
It's probably a deer. If that's the right size and most common in your area, whether someone moved the bones or not, that'd be my guess!

okay, since 90+% of sellers seem to just label everything as "bobcat/lynx" and I've known more than a few shady sellers mislabel animals as rarer/more desirable specimens for a quick buck (see: literally 99.99% of things labeled "wolf"), can anyone tell me some definitive ways to tell the difference between a lynx and bobcat skull? it's easy enough when you have the fur on, but i legit have no idea and google is being an ass on bringing up anything helpful.

my dad and sister recently found a dog skull. later in the day, my dad and i found the collar, but no identification at all. the location seems to have a history of being a bit shady and used as a dumping ground, so there is a chance even if we somehow found the owner, they wouldnt want the dog anyway.
i know bones can tell a story, but im not sure how much i can gather myself. i believe this dog to be a pit bull or rottweiler from skull shape, which if true, means that being dumped like that might mean it could be a fight dog, i dont know.
also, looking at the teeth, from what i remember of my wildlife tracking class, and assuming it is applicable to domestics, the glove like shape of the inscisors suggests a young dog. compared to my living ~5yr chihuahua who miraculously let me look at his teeth to see they are definitely worn down past the more glove like shape, i feel confident this method checks out. i assume the dog is no more than a couple years old at most, but probably an adult, as i dont see any teeth that have not yet emerged. that said, it looks like the first premolar behind the canine is missing on one side. there is no hole for where it should be. i dont know what that means, but it probably means something.
the weathering of the bone is fascinating. i also found shattered bits of what i assume to be an opossum in the same area with a similar look.
i forgot to mention, in the first pic i have it compared to a juvenile pig i found in a bay.
anyway, if anyone has any other information they can glean from what i have, or wants to weigh in on my analysis, i would love to hear it!
