The Movies EVERYONE Should See Once

So as you can see, looking at my archive, I kinda let this blog go by the wayside a long while ago. Long story short, my life got busy and I forgot about it. Life is currently not busy, so here we are:

Anyone who has known me for an extended period of time has heard me mention my list of movies every person should see once. These movies are not on the list for quality (though many are very good, in my opinion). Movies are art and art is subjective. Some of the movies on the list I downright loath. But I still think you should see them. Put simply, these are movies where if you haven’t seen them I think your quality of life will suffer, even if only a little. These are movies that have so completely infested our culture that you are simply expected to know them. I’ve never actually sat down and wrote out the list, and now seemed as good a time as any. Here we go, in no particular order.

1. Star Wars (The Original Trilogy)

2. The Godfather Parts 1 and 2. (You can watch part 3, but all you need to know is “Every time I think I’m out, they pull me back in.”)

3. Airplane!

4. Forrest Gump

5. Top Gun

6. Citizen Kane (if for no other reason than when a freshman film student tells you it’s the greatest film ever, you know exactly why they’re wrong)

7. Casablanca

8. Gone With the Wind

9. Home Alone (2 is optional, 3 is not. Do not watch Home Alone 3)

10. Back to the Future (trilogy optional)

11. Plan 9 from Outer Space, The Room, and Manos the Hands of Fate (so you have a side to pick when arguing “worst movie ever made”)

12. Raiders of the Lost Ark (second and third Indiana Jones movies recommended)

13. It’s a Wonderful Life (every sitcom ever has parodied it. Go watch the original)

14. From Russia With Love -OR- Goldfinger (James Bond is THE gentleman spy. These two movies feature Bond at his Bondest)

15. The Man With the Golden Gun -OR- Moonraker (Every parody of James Bond is -very- accurate. These two movies feature Bond at his Austin Powers-est)

16. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (Star Trek: The Motion Picture recommended as a cure for insomnia)

17. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

18. Friday the Thirteenth

19. A Nightmare on Elm Street

20. Halloween

21. Batman (starring Adam West), Batman (starring Michael Keaton), and The Dark Knight. (If you only see one, you’re missing a lot of pop culture’s Batman)

22. The Princess Bride

23. Groundhog Day (See It’s a Wonderful Life)

24. The Sixth Sense

25. The Wizard of Oz

26. Basically the entire Disney Animated Canon

Now, this list is by no means comprehensive. If you can think of others, I invite you to suggest them. The list grows every time I think of another movie that should be on it, and this list here is simply the top 26 (ish)  I could think of. Even while writing this, one more came to me but I didn’t put it down fast enough and have forgotten it. But the next time I hear the title, I’ll think “Yes! That’s the one!” Also, keep in mind that the list is of “important” movies, not “good” movies. I don’t care if “Mean Girls” changed your life, I just don’t think it’s prevalent enough in our culture to make the list.
