Day One in Uganda The Kampala Kronicles - 26th September - 30th September 2017 The arrival of TRE Now, this is where everything starts picking up, mainly because how mad and crazy everything was (kinda similar to life in general to be honest). So, we landed on the 26th of September at around 11am. I, unlike the rest, was completely unable to sleep on the flights as the leg room on etihad Airways was rather cramped, and to avoid needing a wheelchair when alighting in Uganda, I stood for the majority of the 5 hours from Dubai, only returning to my seat for landing and free food (Diaries of a chubby kid amiright!) so when we did land, I was completely spaced and ready to slip into a 'mild' coma. The initial blast of hot air from the 40 degree climate knocked me back, I clutched my proverbial pearls and toddled off the plane into immigration control. Now, usually I never have an issue with Immigration Control abroad, but oh no, not today, for you see my Visa had been dealt with by VSO but marked me as entering the country a full week before I actually arrived. I then got a lengthy questioning by the immigration officer, who was asking if I forged my entry or whether or not I had just snuck in and out of the country without passing immigration first. Instinctively, I just handed him all of my flight information, the number for VSO and the airline. He could see I was exhausted and just ran the ticket through from my flight. Within 20 minutes he returned to myself, a sweating mass of flesh with the inkling of an oncoming sunburn due to standing partly in the sunlight, with my ticket and restamped my visa with correct entry. The rest of the volunteers had already made it through by now and had had time to get some water and food, as well as convert their money into Ugandan Shillings, meaning by the time I came over, they were ready to board the coach to the hotel, a full 3 hours drive from the airport. Defeated, deflated and defrosting like ice on a hotplate, I followed them onto the coach, sitting at the front with my legs over the barrier for comfort. I plugged my music in and passed out. I awoke 2 hours later outside a currency exchange store conjoined to a rest stop selling drinks. I thanked my lucky stars the other volunteers were grabbing 'supplies aka cigarettes' and got stuck in the queue so I hurried into the exchange and got my shillings, but at the last moment of getting my money I heard the coach engine roar to life, the driver about to pull away. Now have you ever seen an elephant run whilst trying to put away a wallet? No? Well I can say one thing, it was the most stressful yet hilarious experience ever. I was hopping along trying to jam my wallet away, and then sprinted for the coach, screaming and waving my arms. A video was taken by one of them on the back of the coach as another alerted the driver, and all that can be heard is me screaming 'Slow yah fucking horses, you've left the fat one, this bitch can't run, please stop the coach please' And the bus driver going in his thick accent 'OHHH Nooo I left the big one outside, maybe if he runs more he won't be so big' And upon review of this video not only did I die of laughter, but also cursed the driver for intentionally carrying on at a slower speed with the door open so I had to run to get into the coach for his own sick and perverted personal training goals. Never make me run unless you have money. So twice in only a few hours I had melted, my hum of sweat flooded the coach and the sptrizes of aftershave and airfreshner filled the carriage. Alas, after 3 hours of painful stench, we arrived at Landmark Hotel in Kampala. I was pleasantly surprised at the fact I was given the biggest room, with a shower, bath and working flush toilet. I solemnly swear, I showered for a solid half hour, then sat on the bed with a towel for another hour. I was exhausted but knew I wouldn't be able to sleep till later the day due to activities (fancy word for lectures on security and food) I donned the yellow nigerian traditional ketenge and went out of my room. I was excited to just sit down under the shaded pergola and have a cigarette, but sadly I was swarmed by my fellow volunteers, who decided it was best for me to sit with them and have something to drink. We sat and drank most of the afternoon, had some posho and beans for our dinner (rice and stewed beans with some mashed plantain) and met the hotels managers daughter and dog. Now, I can't say I like children because they are noisy creatures with no regard for my peace, but this child was so peaceful, she either slept or just came over and played with me and the others, which was reminiscent of my baby sister who I left at home, which stabbed me with the first feeling of homesickness. The night came, I along with Ben, Cory, Kumz, Layla and Katy, sat on the balcony outside my room, drinking Bond7 whiskey and chilling to music. We had never met before but from day one we were thick as thieves knowing we were all going to Kitgum together. When I think back nowadays to Uganda, this day is among some of the best in my life and of this trip. Stay tuned for the Saturday installment where I delve into the length and breadth of alcoholism in Uganda 🇺🇬
