Kartiki Gonsalves’ documentary debut, “The Elephant Whisperers,” shines a spotlight on the ways in which climate change and human encroachment are rapidly destroying the habitats of Asian elephants. The film’s dire warning is subtly woven into a heartfelt narrative about forging family in unlikely places with elephant caretakers Bomman and Bellie at its core. The duo raise an orphaned elephant named Raghu, whom they’ve cared for since infancy, as well as another calf named Ammu.

The Elephant Whisperers – Documentary To Oscars – 2023
“The Elephant Whisperers,” India’s heart-wrenching film about the inseparable bond between an abandoned elephant and its two caretakers, won an Oscar – in 2023. Kartiki Gonsalves’ film won top honors in the Documentary Short category at the 95th Academy Awards.
The documentary, streaming on Netflix, focuses on the relationship between humans and animals. This drives home a huge message about the need for elephant conservation and protection.

Surrounded by the Nilgiris and beyond the Mayar River, in the heart of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve Theppakadu Elephant Camp, live Bomman, Bellie, and their baby Raghu (elephant). Kartiki Gonsalves follows this family of three through the changing seasons of the jungle in his short documentary.
Gonsalves’ documentary, shortlisted for the 95th Oscars in the Documentary Short category, takes viewers on a mesmerizing visual safari of trees changing color, rivers overflowing, and forests burning in the summer heat.

Bomman and Bellie, who belong to the Kattunayakan tribe, revolve around this forest. This is where their forefathers have protected and toiled, which they hope to pass on to their grandchildren. “We live off the forest, but we also protect it,” says Bellie. A tiger killed her husband. This creates a gap between her and the forest, and she begins to fear the place where she grew up. Raghu’s early career followed a similar path. He was separated from his herd after his mother was electrocuted to death. Bellie, who has never taken care of elephants before, and Raghu, who recently lost her baby and is not used to being around humans, join forces to find relief in the same forest. For Bomman, taking care of Raghu is the first baby step he takes to carry on the legacy of his grandfather and father. Bomman, who was attacked by an adult elephant and injured, has been assigned to care for the young elephants by the forest department.
Tumblr media
The documentary is narrated only by Bomman and Bellie. In telling the story of their life with Raghu, human damage to nature is part of their conversation with the audience.
It is this seamlessness that Gonsalves extends to the footage of the documentary, creating an immersive experience. Although the camera continues to document the family’s daily routine, it does not disrupt its private space.
Bomman and Bellie are not taken out of the forest to tell their story. The viewer eagerly follows Pomman, talks about eating ragu, or sits on the sidelines as Belle recalls her first meeting with Rahu.
In that way, Gonçalves’ works represent a safari where the viewer quietly observes the connection between nature and man as Bomman, Belle, and Raghu invite you to a place that is becoming rarer by the day.
From Documentary To Oscars
Tumblr media
Gonsalves dedicated the award to his “motherland India” and her family. “I stand here to speak of our connection with the natural world, for the respect of indigenous communities, and empathy towards other living beings we share a space with, and finally, for coexistence,” she said. “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing our film, highlighting indigenous people. And for Netflix, for believing in the power of our film.”
“The film has connected people across the world. It comes to the question of how powerful filmmaking and storytelling is and how a small story with a global message has reached people across the globe in spite of being a local story from the heart of India,” Kartiki Gonsalves, who is the director, cinematographer and executive producer of “The Elephant Whisperers,” had told Moneycontrol in an interview in February. visit us on : https://www.allcanpost.com/the-elephant-whisperers-documentary-to-oscars-2023/

The Elephant Whisperers - Movie Review

The Elephant Whisperers – A Movie Review
                                 A movie by Kartiki Gonsalves
This weekend I saw The Elephant Whisperers, which is nominated for the Oscars in the short film documentary category. It is a film that gives you a soothing experience in its 41 minutes run-time.
Your eyes are treated with an opening scene capturing the lush green landscape of Mudumalai National Park in Southern India which is also an elephant reserve.
Dense forests, bubbling rivers, untamed waterfalls and the freely roaming wildlife transports you to a world of innocence, nature, raw beauty and a loving earth. Your eyes and ears are gently pampered by these rich visuals.
The film is about an orphaned baby elephant Raghu and an aged couple Belli and Bomman; who take care of Raghu after his mother got electrocuted by a barbed wire fencing a farm.
Right from the first scene showing Raghu with his caretakers, this is a movie of unconditional love, pure affection and blissful harmony between humans and animals, elephants in this case.
The passion with which the selfless couple takes care of Raghu is heart-warming. They not only feed and bathe him, but talk to him and play with him as if he is their own child. Raghu responds to their love and affection and recovers from his mental and physical trauma.
After some time, another elephant Ammu, joins him for caretaking and the two elephants bond wonderfully after an initial hiccup period of settling in.
The daily routine of the couple remains much the same and they are shown happily spending their days in loving and caring for these elephants. Bellie and Bomman also teach young children how to care for these elephants. Their only desire is that even the coming generations treat these animals with love and respect.
In times of rampant development, leading to increasing human-animal conflict in areas surrounded by forests, Bellie and Bomman are a flicker of hope of humanity.
The movie comes as a wonderful respite for people living in urban areas surrounded by sky scrapers and flyovers, trains and traffic jams, honking and rushing around, as it brings a world to you where people are thriving and are truly happy sleeping in a mud house, eating simple home-cooked meals, living in harmony with nature, surrounded by peace, wildlife, birds, orange sunsets and pink sunrises. They often walk barefoot, as a mark of respect for the forest they live in and take from it only as much as is needed for daily use.
They are not affected by bank balances or appraisals, have never heard of promotions or presentations, do not dream of fancy vacations and use the phone only to communicate with the outside world for essentials. Their aspirations are simple, purpose of life noble.
This movie made me realize that there would be many such people who would be doing their duty, however great it may be, as a way of life, without any expectation of a reward, appreciation, acknowledgement or fame. Their contentment from life and peace of mind makes these embellishments and prizes seem so fickle and unnecessary.
In times where violence, gore, ear thrashing item numbers and story-less movies barge our screens, a movie as this is a therapeutic experience in its entirety.

Elephant Whisperers, The Sweetest Film
“Elephant Whisperers” is one of the sweetest films I have ever watched. Straightforwardly but with a level of stunning depth, it tells us a tender story, for it shows the familial relationship between two baby elephants who separately lost their parents and who, after wandering in despair and hungry, end up taken care of by humans.  The camera follows the life of Bomman and Bellie, a man and a…

It's been 30 years since Disney's Angels in the Outfield came out in July-15-1994 and let me tell ya: it's a great movie! It's a story about a foster kid named Roger Bomman (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his friend named J.P. (Milton Davis Jr.) who love the baseball team called Anaheim Angels (Los Angeles Angels in real life), even though they're the worst team in the major leagues. One word: RUDE! His estranged dad, Mr. Bomman (Dermot Mulroney), promises to reunite the family if the Angels make it to the World Series, so Roger asks for divine help and prays that his favorite team will turn things around. Soon, a real angel named Al "The Boss" Angel (Christopher Lloyd) shows up in response to Roger's prayers, and Anaheim's hopeless coach named George Knox (Danny Glover) is shocked to see his team on a winning streak.

"Disney's Angels" TV Show idea
30 years ago, "Angels in the Outfield" hit theaters. And its success led to two stand-alone spin-offs that don't connect to the first movie. Those spin-offs being "Angels in the Endzone" and "Angels in the Infield", which were both released on ABC in 1997 and 2000 respectively. And yet, with the rise of Disney+, it got me thinking, what if "Angels in the Outfield" had an animated TV series that was based on the films?
In my mind, I imagined that this show would simply be called "Angels", as opposed to "Angels in the Outfield: The Animated Series", or something like that. Reason being because I figured every episode title begins with "Angels", kind of like how with "Hercules: The Animated Series", every title for each episode began with "Hercules" and branched off of that name.
DISTRIBUTOR
Disney+
ANIMATION
I think 2D animation may qualify better as opposed to CG animation.
SETUP
Every episode would take up a full 30 minutes, resulting in two commercial breaks. The show could last for about two seasons at best. And as I stated up top, the title of every episode begins with the word "Angels".
CAST
The big debate I have is if cast members from the movies like, hypothetically speaking, Christopher Lloyd and David Alan Grier should reprise their respective roles as angels Al and Bob Bugler, or if they should be recast with sound alikes. But alongside them, we would get a new set of characters.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt even once stated how he'd be all in for an "Angels" reboot, so I wasn't sure if he should return as Roger Bomman (albeit grown up) or if he should voice an entirely new character.
EPISODE IDEAS
Down below are some ideas I have for episodes this show could have, and it doesn't always have to rely on helping a sports team. Some episodes break the norm by showing Angels helping other people with real-life issues.
"Angels on Ice" - The premiere episode where Al helps out a losing ice hockey team.
"Angels on the Court" - A new angel character helps out a losing basketball team.
"Angels in the Midfield" - A new angel character helps out a losing soccer team.
"Angels in Las Vegas" - A new angel character tries to stop a hustler from gambling in the casino and warns the hustler about the dangers of constant gambling, which can be considered illegal.
"Angels Wipe Out" - When the angels hear a prayer from a surfer, Al's constant helping prevents him from taking a vacation in another part of Heaven, which worries the other angels.
"Angels We Have Heard on High" - A Christmas-themed episode based on the song of the same name.
This is all I've got, but while this idea may be religious, I'm still hopeful we'll get an "Angels" TV show on Disney+ one day.
